Any discussion of the most influential First Ladies has to start with Eleanor Roosevelt.

America had popular First Ladies (Dolley Madison, Frances Cleveland

America had First Ladies who worked to help others. (Harriet Lane, Grace Coolidge)

America had First Ladies who had taken on extraordinary roles (Edith Wilson, Lou Hoover)

But Eleanor Roosevelt tore up the book of expectations for the First Ladies and transformed the role! Starting life as a shy child, orphaned young, Eleanor’s prospects did not seem bright.  She was unhappy and withdrawn as a girl, finally starting to blossom when given the chance to study with a dynamic teacher.  She navigated a difficult marriage and grew to become one of the most important and influential American women of all time.
