Understanding the Election: What Happened—and Why?

The votes have been cast. The campaign commercials have ended. Now comes the most important question:
What did the 2026 election actually tell us?
One week after Election Day, historian and political analyst Barry Bradford will present a comprehensive, completely nonpartisan analysis of the results—and what they mean for the country’s future.
Before the election, I offered detailed predictions about the battle for the Senate, control of the House of Representatives, key races for governor, and important contests here in Illinois. In this candid follow-up, I will show you where my predictions were right, where I was wrong, and which results surprised nearly everyone.
More importantly, we will move beyond winners and losers to examine what we learned about the American electorate.
Together, we will explore:
- Which party will control the House and Senate
- The races that decided control of Congress
- The biggest surprises and upsets
- Where the polls and political forecasts succeeded or failed
- What turnout and early-voting patterns revealed
- How independents and other crucial voting groups shaped the outcome
- What happened in the most important Illinois races
- What the results mean for the final two years of President Donald Trump’s term
- How the election may begin shaping the 2028 presidential campaign
We will also separate genuine national trends from results driven by individual candidates, unusual local circumstances, or a state’s political makeup.
This presentation will be updated through the morning of November 10 to include the latest results and developments. If any significant races remain unresolved, I will explain what remains to be counted, which candidate appears to have the advantage, and why the final result may take additional time.
There will also be ample time for questions and discussion.
Whether you attended my Election Eve preview or are joining us for the first time, this program will give you a clearer understanding of what happened, why it happened, and what comes next.
