If you were watching television in 1980, you might have noticed a curly-haired 24-year-old actor named Tom Hanks starring in a lighthearted new sitcom, Bosom Buddies. Hanks and Peter Scolari played struggling roommates who disguised themselves as women to afford a place in a women’s-only residence. Who could have imagined that the energetic young comedian would become one of the most beloved and accomplished movie stars of all time?

Over the years, Tom Hanks has often been compared to the legendary Jimmy Stewart—and the comparison becomes more convincing with each passing year. Both actors possess an extraordinary ability to portray fundamentally decent, recognizably human characters while succeeding in almost every kind of film.

Hanks made audiences laugh in Splash and Big, moved them in Philadelphia and Cast Away, and became a romantic leading man in Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail. He brought history to life in Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, The Post, and Sully—and voiced one of the most cherished characters in modern animation: Woody in the Toy Story films.

Along the way, Hanks earned six Academy Award nominations and became only the second actor in history to win consecutive Best Actor Oscars, for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump.
