SUMMARY:First Ladies - 1860 - 1945
DESCRIPTION:First Ladies – 1860 – 1945\nWhen Martha Washington became our first First Lady\, she stepped into a roll with no job description and no precedent. She handled the position with grace and polish. however\, each of the extraordinary women who served as First Lady brought something unique and different to the role. \nFirst Ladies – 1860 – 1945\nFrances Cleveland \nThis second installment in our series on the history of the First Ladies looks at the changing roles taken on by the wives of the presidents from 1860 – 1945. We end with Eleanor Roosevelt and begin with Mary Lincoln. This is certainly a distinctive mix of personalities and aspirations! We will look at the “traditional” First Ladies who took on the role of wife and mother and shunned the spotlight. This group includes Caroline Harrison\,  Ida McKinley\, and Julia Grant. Frances Cleveland carved out a very different niche for herself\, raising a young family while bringing glamour back to the White House. Several of the  First Ladies in this group were transformative figures. Nellie Taft\, Edith Wilson and Eleanor Roosevelt were tremendously influential in their husband’s administrations. Lucy Hayes brought a new level of education to the position. \nUsing numerous film clips\, intriguing insights\,  thought provoking comparisons\, and fascinating anecdotes\, I will open your eyes to the very different personalities and accomplishments of the First Ladies of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nPlease note: CLC registration is required. Please call the office for help/info!

SUMMARY:Carl Reiner - Free ZOOM Class!
DESCRIPTION:Carl Reiner was one of the funniest men ever to appear in – or write for – or direct an episode of TV! He passed away June 29\, 2020 at age 98 – and his life still seemed too short! \nAt 98\, he was the oldest celebrity active on Twitter – and he was not even contemplating retiring from show business! Join me for a fast\, funny and fascinating look at one of America’s classic comic treasures\, Mr. Carl Reiner \nCarl Reiner first exploded into American consciousness as the straight man on the immortal Sid Caesar’s great TV shows. \nWorking alongside writing legends including Mel Brooks\, Woody Allen\, Neil Simon\, Selma Diamond and Larry Gelbart\, Carl Reiner became one of the volatile Caesar’s favorite co-stars and most trusted writers. \nTheir classic “Professor” sketches are still hilarious sixty-five years after they first aired. And his lifelong friendship and collaboration with Mel Brooks began as a result! \nAfter the Sid Caesar shows ended\, Carl Reiner created The DIck Van Dyke Show. This program would prove to be one of the most influential\, funniest and most transformative situation comedies of all time.  \nAfter Reiner and Van Dyke ended the show at the height of its popularity\, the brilliant writer/producer/director began working in feature films.  \nCarl Reiner created the cult classics “Where’s Poppa” and “Oh\, God” before embarking on a brilliant partnership with Steve Martin. The Reiner/Martin films include some of the best comedies of Steve Martin’s career\, including “The Jerk\,” “Alll Of Me\,” and “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid.” \nWe’ll enjoy clips and stories from all of this – and\, of course – the brilliant “2\,000 Year Old Man” routines with Mel Brooks. Don’t miss this great presentation! \nTHIS PRESENTATION IS FREE\, THANKS TO THE GREAT PEOPLE AT McHENRY COUNTY COLLEGE. HOWEVER\, YOU MUST REGISTER! \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nIMPORTANT NOTE – I am NOT involved with the registration process in any way. I cannot get you a link or send you a reminder. Direct ALL questions to the hosts!!!!  Thanks!
