SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics (Part I)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: THE START TIME FOR THIS PRESE NTATION IS 6:00 PM TO ACCOMMODATE THOSE OF US WHO WILL BE WATCHING THE VICE-PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE AT 8:00 \nI am presenting a shortened version of this at several locations. This one is different because it will be in two parts and much more comprehensive. \nFilms will be presented chronologically. \nPolitics and the movies are a match made in heaven! Movies need compelling characters\, suspenseful plots\, unexpected twists\, and a great conclusion. Politics provides all the above and then some! In this remarkable new presentation\, Best Movies About Politics\, I’ll present my admittedly idiosyncratic list of the best films ever made about American politics. Some are dramas\, and some are comedies. Some are old classics\, and some are very modern. Some are well-known\, critically acclaimed Hollywood films\, and others are excellent but obscure! \nBest Movies About Politics\nThis fun\, fascinating\, and fast-moving presentation is one of my favorites\, combining my love of great cinema with a lifelong fascination with elections. And where else will you find a list that plausibly contains Henry Fonda\, Eddie Murphy\, Kirk Douglas\, George Clooney\, and Jimmy Stewart? From directors Frank Capra and Preston Sturges to Rob Reiner and screenwriters Aaron Sorkin to Rod Serling\, some of the most incredible talent in movie history have tackled the subject of elections in films that are entertaining\, thought-provoking\, and often unforgettable. We will look at clips from some of them and consider others! \nOf course\, we will leave time for discussion and your choices. Let’s see what everyone else chooses as the best movies about politics! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, email me\, and I will waive your fee. You only have to request the waiver once; it will automatically cover you for all future programs. I am struggling but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. Box #177 \nDeerfield\, IL 60015 \nPlease put Movies 1 on the subject line. \nPaypal: \nPayPal (Please note\, PayPal takes 10% of your donation as a fee. SUMMARY:Lincoln's Greatest Speeches
DESCRIPTION:This brand new presentation will introduce you to the greatest speeches given by our greatest president. Abraham Lincoln was a master of communication. Like FDR during World War II\, Lincoln constantly explained to Americans why we were fighting the Civil War. Although many people throughout the Union opposed him\, President Abraham Lincoln never stopped trying to bring about national consensus\, conciliation\, and cooperation. \nYou are probably very familiar with the Gettysburg address. And you may remember that President Lincoln famously called on the nation to deal with defeated traitors\, “With malice towards none and charity towards all..” but in this insightful history presentation\, we will go pull out the surface. We will look at how Lincoln used language to make sure his positions were clearly understood\, that people felt empowered\, and with the hope that he could heal a broken nation. \n

SUMMARY:Thomas Edison Bright Ideas - A Multimedia Biography
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Edison Bright Ideas\nThomas Edison (1847 – 1931) was a genius! He is best remembered as one of the greatest inventors of all time.  Edison was certainly that!  Edison was not terribly interested in theoretical science. Instead\, he concentrated on practical discoveries such as the light bulb\, motion picture cameras\, sound recording\, and voting machines.  Thomas Edison’s bright ideas transformed the world!  His inventions changed the lives of all Americans and ushered in a period of explosive economic growth as technology created new jobs\, opportunities and investments. \nBut as you will discover in this fascinating multimedia biography\, Thomas Edison was also a pioneering and visionary businessman\, a philosopher\, and a mentor.  He also had some forward-thinking – and wrongheaded – views of society. We will explore the roots of his personality. You’ll see how his personal struggles with learning disabilities and hearing loss make his accomplishments all the more remarkable. \nWe will look at his unique family dynamic\, the early manifestations of his genius\, the controversies surrounding his patents\, and some of his offbeat and dubious beliefs. \n

SUMMARY:The Life Of FDR - A Multimedia Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The Life Of FDR\n \nUnderstanding the life of FDR is like taking a sonogram of the USA.  Franklin Roosevelt transformed the United States with optimism\, vigor\, vision\, and skill.  The effects are still being felt and still being debated today.  And he did it all from a wheelchair. \nOptimism was one of FDR’s greatest strengths and most incredible gifts.  He inspired others to be positive\, even during the darkest days of the Second World War and during the depths of the Great Depression. FDR was the first President since Lincoln to seek out the advice of African American advisors routinely. He was the first President to appoint a woman to the cabinet. Although FDR was unable to end the misery of the Great Depression\, his policies definitely helped relieve the suffering of many people.  Just as important\, he filled them with optimism. \nWhen the Second World War loomed\, he had the vision to appoint George C. Marshall to head our armed forces – and then worked tirelessly to make sure Marshall had everything he needed to secure victory in Africa\, Europe\, and Asia. \nWoody Guthrie wrote a song called “Dear Mrs. Roosevelt\,” which contained the lines: \n“I voted for him lots of times \nAnd I’d vote for him again!” \nThe life of FDR is not without blemish. He was unfaithful to his wife and capable of being duplicitous.  His treatment of Japanese Americans is very controversial.  So is his reaction to the Holocaust.  All of his complexities and accomplishments will come to life in this non-partisan multimedia presentation. We will explore his family history\, his marriage\, his faith and all the forces that shaped the mind of one of the great Americans. \n

SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world.  We are the only nation to have landed a man on the moon\, and our research universities are the envy of the world.  But in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election.  Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the 2000 election was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime!  At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation shows how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call.  We will examine what happens when both the political and judicial systems cannot resolve the result in a way that inspires confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long-range results of the elections.  The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation.  George W. Bush’s victory in the 2000 election ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \n  \n
