SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world.  We are the only nation to have landed a man on the moon\, and our research universities are the envy of the world.  But in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election.  Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the 2000 election was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime!  At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation shows how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call.  We will examine what happens when both the political and judicial systems cannot resolve the result in a way that inspires confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long-range results of the elections.  The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation.  George W. Bush’s victory in the 2000 election ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION: History Vs. the Movies: Mississippi Burning\nMississippi Burning: The Civil Rights Era is one of the most exciting\, important\, and electrifying eras in American history. \nIt had everything from a cinematic standpoint: dynamic lead characters\, powerful and determined villains\, mystery\, mood\, motivation\, and manipulation. Nonetheless\, movies about the era have generally not been hits\, and despite the hype about Selma\, no great masterpiece of filmmaking has yet emerged. “Mississippi Burning”  is a brilliant film but utter nonsense from a historical point of view. “Selma” is a maddening jumble. In its sections on Martin Luther King\, it is extraordinary. In its sections on Lyndon Johnson\, it is entirely misleading. “Ghosts of Mississippi” is an earnest and well-made film about the trial of the murderer of Medgar Evers. However\, unless you already knew quite a bit about Medgar Evers\, you would leave the film wondering who exactly he was. \nSome of the best films about the Civil Rights Movement have been made-for-TV films. Clark Johnson directed “Boycott”  for HBO\, and it combines arresting visuals with superb acting. The Rosa Parks made-for-TV movie was likewise excellent. Spike Lee directed an outstanding documentary\, “Four Little Girls.”  But so far\, a genuine cinematic masterpiece about the Civil Rights Era has eluded filmmakers. \nThis fast-moving and thought-provoking multimedia presentation will look at clips from some films about the Civil Rights Movement.   Our particular focus will be on “Mississippi Burning.” Using inside stories\, personal anecdotes\, and a clear timeline\, we will see how this brilliantly made film distorted history and changed America’s perceptions about the Movement. \nCheck this out: in “Mississippi Burning\,”  the FBI gets an invaluable ship to find where the bodies are buried. The screenwriter and director had to fictionalize where the tip came from. That is because the mystery informant had never been revealed. Working with the brilliant investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell\, I was able to help figure out where the tip had come from – Jerry uncovered the identity of the mysterious “Mr. X.” Click here to find out who he was! \n.

DESCRIPTION:The multiple indictments of former President Donald Trump in 2024 have shocked and divided the nation. Although other former Presidents could have been indicted (click here for more context)\, the conviction of a former President for sexual assault  and the subsequent\nindictments for illegal hush money payments to a prostitute\, the mishandling and hiding of top-secret\, classified documents\, a scheme to defraud voters through various means related to the 2020 election\, Electoral College\, and January 6\, and the blistering\, multi-count racketeering indictment for allegedly breaking numerous election laws in Georgia are without precedent. \nIn this non-partisan multimedia presentation\, we will examine the intense legal problems – past and present – faced by former President Donald J. Trump. We will address the venues\, charges\, and likelihood of conviction in each trial. \nThe Past Trials of Trump\nIn 1972-3\, a U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division investigation into racial discrimination in housing by the Trump organization ended with Donald Trump and his father paying one of the most enormous fines in history. Significantly\, it was a Republican Attorney General appointed by Richard Nixon\, who approved the investigation. \nThroughout his business career\, Donald Trump has had to settle many cases in which he and his organization were at fault. A lawsuit against Trump University for fraud was resolved through a series of agreements. In November 2016\, shortly after the U.S. presidential election\, President-elect Donald Trump agreed to pay $25 million to settle the three fraud lawsuits against Trump University. \nThe Indictments: Falsifying Tax Documents\nIn March 2023\, former President Donald Trump faced his initial indictment from the Manhattan\, New York\, District Attorney on state charges connected to a hush-money transaction involving adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016. \nThe New York prosecutors claim that Trump was involved in an illicit scheme aimed at compromising the legitimacy of the 2016 election. \nFurthermore\, they assert that he took part in an illegal strategy to prevent unfavorable details from emerging\, which encompassed the $130\,000 payment. Former President Trump has pleaded not guilty in response to these allegations. \nThe Indictments: Mishandling Classified Documents\nIn June 2023\, a federal grand jury in Miami issued an indictment against Trump. The charges stemmed from his alleged possession of classified national defense documents taken from the White House after his presidential term ended\, along with accusations of obstructing government efforts to recover these materials. Both Trump and his associate\, Walt Nauta\, pleaded not guilty. \nSubsequently\, on July 27\, the special counsel leveled three new charges against Trump\, including an additional count of purposeful retention of national defense information. Nauta faced two new charges as well. Additionally\, a new defendant\, Carlos de Oliveira\, was introduced to the case and confronted with four charges\, including his inclusion in the conspiracy to obstruct justice\, as stated in the initial indictment. \nTHE INDICTMENTS: 2020 Election Interference\nThe third indictment against former President Donald J. Trump arises from an inquiry led by special counsel Jack Smith\, focused on purported endeavors by the former president and his associates to undermine the outcome of the 2020 election. The indictment contends that Trump\, along with an accomplice\, made efforts to exploit the disorder and unrest at the Capitol by urging legislators to postpone the certification of the election. \nAdditionally\, it claims that another associate encouraged then-Vice President Mike Pence to take actions that would run counter to the law to delay the recognition of President Joe Biden’s victory. Following the indictment\, the Trump campaign promptly denied the allegations. Subsequently\, Trump entered a plea of not guilty in response to all four charges. \nTHE INDICTMENTS: Georgia \nOn August 14\, a grand jury based in Atlanta issued an indictment against Trump and 18 others\, citing state-level charges that stem from their alleged endeavors to overturn the outcome of the former president’s 2020 election loss. \nThis significant indictment marks the fourth instance of criminal charges against Trump. The allegations\, unveiled as part of an extensive investigation overseen by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis\, address some of the most conspicuous actions the former president and his supporters took to interfere with the 2020 presidential election. Unlike the accusations of election manipulation brought forth by special counsel Jack Smith\, Willis’ case possesses its protection: \n  \n
