SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans simply do not know very much about the Revolutionary War.   \nAlthough certain images from the Revolutionary War are seared into our memory – Washington Crossing the Delaware  and the signing of the Declaration of Independence –  many people would be hard-pressed to name a major battle\, a leading general or even how the War For Independence ended.  Recent events in America have caused some to question whether we should even have statues of George Washington on public display. \nTHE REVOLUTIONARY WAR\n In this four-part series on the Revolutionary War we will examine why the freest and most prosperous colonials in the world decided to declare independence from a mother country that had protected them. We will look at the roots of the war\, the Declaration of Independence\, the early battles including Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill before transitioning into a longer look at the seven years of fighting necessary for America to begin its experiment in participatory democracy. We will also look at the amazing and diverse leaders who guided America. Benjamin Franklin\,James Monroe\, John Adams\, Paul Revere\, George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, and Alexander Hamilton will be some of the people whom we will meet. I encourage you to learn more about how America came to be! \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 from everyone who registers for the class. SUMMARY:America's Purpose Statement: The Declaration Of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The most important sentence ever written by an American – a sentence which has inspired people in every part of the world – is found in America’s purpose statement!  Click here to read more. The legacy of Washington\, Hancock\, Franklin\, Jefferson\, Adams\, Hamilton and Paul Revere challenges us even today \n \nOn a stifling July Thursday in 1776\, our Founding Fathers agreed to a document that was completely unique in the history of the world.  There had been many revolutions over the centuries\, but never had one begun with a philosophical purpose statement. \nAlthough the Declaration of Independence has no legal power\, the Declaration has become the guiding beacon for what America was striving to become. As the events of 2020 showed\, we as a a nation we are a world leader in human rights and\, yet\, America is still a work in progress. \n \nWhy study the Declaration of Independence? Because it is the ultimate statement of what we hope to become. It has been quoted by freedom movements in the USA and around the world. Yet many Americans know surprisingly little about it. In this exciting and thought provoking multimedia presentation I will present the thrilling themes\, difficult negotiations\, the contradictory\, complex and charismatic personalities and exciting events that led to the most important moment in American history. \nCOST: Suggested donation is $5.00.Please mark “Declaration” in the subject line. \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. SUMMARY:Movies About Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln On Film
DESCRIPTION:No President of the United States has been portrayed in the movies more often than Abraham Lincoln! \nFrom the earliest days of silent movies\, Lincoln has been featured in more movies than all other Presidents combined. The most brilliant of these iconic performances can be seen in John Ford’s groundbreaking “Young Mr. Lincoln” starring Henry Fonda. Raymond Massey played Lincoln so often on stage\, movies\, and TV that George S. Kaufman famously observed: “[Raymond] Massey won’t be satisfied until he’s assassinated!” \nEven in contemporary films such as Spielberg’s “Lincoln\,” the myth of Honest Abe grows and evolves with each movie. In this insightful\, mesmerizing and nostalgic multimedia presentation\, you will see my work as a Lincoln scholar combined with my love of classic cinema! \nPLEASE NOTE – THIS CLASS IS OFFERED THROUGH CLC – ALL REGISTRATION GOES THROUGH THEM!

SUMMARY:1862 The Civil War Year By Year- The Battle For America
DESCRIPTION:1862 The Civil War At 150\n\n\n\n\nA Nation Divided – 1862 The Civil War\n\n\n\nWhen the Civil War began\, both sides believed the war would end quickly. They could not have been more wrong. At the two-day Battle of Shiloh\, there were more American casualties than in the entire Revolutionary War\, the War Of 1812\, and the Mexican – American War – combined. Both sides realized that the War would be long and bloody and that the casualty count would stagger the imagination. \nThe Southern (“Confederate” traitors were helped in 1862 by good military leadership but their cause was hurt by inept political leadership fighting for the right to hold human beings as forced laborers  sexual slaves under the guise of “State’s Rights.”  \nThe United States Of America was hurt by the uneven military leadership and helped enormously by political leadership that evolved and grew in purpose and resolve. \nIn this week’s presentation\, we will trace the dual paths of the USA and the traitors and note the emergence of General Grant. \n

SUMMARY:Phil Spector And The Murder Of Lana Clarkson
DESCRIPTION:Phil Spector And The Murder Of Lana Clarkson\nIt sounds like an Agatha Christie story – a brilliant but troubled music producer takes a very beautiful  actress who is down on her luck back to his Tyrolian mansion for a drink. Two people are in the room. There is one gun. She ends up dead. Was it a murder? An accident? A suicide? A brilliant prosecutor and his superb assistant had to fight off the O. J. Simpson dream team to convince a jury that Phil Spector was guilty. \nThe problem: not only did the defendant have nearly unlimited resources and the ability to purchase the best attorneys and experts in the world\, but he had history on his side. No person who was a celebrity before their arrest had ever been convicted of murder in the USA! \nThe riveting murder trial of the bizarre Phil Spector played out very differently than the trial of O. J. Simpson. In this case\, a competent judge and a superb prosecutor made the evidence the center of the case\,  You will be fascinated by the intricate and detailed strategies used by each team of lawyers and the colorful cast cast of characters called as witnesses. \nWe will also look at how a crazed HBO movie tried to make the argument that Spector was actually innocent! Sex\, glamour\, forensics\, high priced lawyers – this trial has everything! \nIMPORTANT! Registration is required! Please click here for free registration! \n

SUMMARY:The Civil War In 1864 -65
DESCRIPTION:The Civil War In 1864 -65 marks the culmination of the battle to reunify the land\, crush the terrorists and end the barbaric practice of slavery. Although the fighting ends when the brilliant leadership of Generals Grant\, Sherman\, Sheridan\, and Meade and Admiral Farragut finally destroys the terrorist army threatening the United States Of America\, the end of the Civil War also brings about the murder of Abraham Lincoln. \nThe brutal killing of our greatest President by a  motley group of terrorists dooms the South to almost a century of racial antagonism\, poverty and strife. As we think about the end of the Civil War\, we will also think about what it heralded for the future. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing multimedia presentation! \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 per class from everyone who registers for the class. SUMMARY:The Civil War In 1863
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT! SORRY!\nOur series on the Civil War continues with one of the most exciting and meaningful years in that great conflict.\nIn 1863\, Abraham Lincoln made the rationale for winning the war not just the preservation of the Union\, but the destruction and elimination of the barbaric practice of slavery. At Gettysburg\, Lincoln made one of the most memorable speeches of all time\, declaring\,| “that government of the people\, by the people\, for the people\, shall not perish from the earth.”  \nIn 1863 Lincoln showed his great compassion and deep faith by declaring the first National Thanksgiving Day – despite the carnage of the War. \nFinally\, as battles raged and riots erupted\, President Abraham Lincoln announced the \nEmancipation Proclamation. The purpose of the Civil War had shifted\, although victory against the terrorists was still far from certain. Lincoln’s moral stance elevated the purpose of the War to something noble. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing multimedia presentation! \nSOLD OUT!
At the two day Battle of Shiloh\,there were more American casualties than in the entire Revolutionary War\, the War Of 1812 and the Mexican – American War – combined. Both sides realized that the War would be long and bloody and that the casualty count would stagger the imagination. \nThe Southern (“Confederate” traitors were helped in 1862 by good military leadership but their cause was hurt by inept political leadership fighting for the right to hold human beings as forced laborers  sexual slaves under the guise of “State’s Rights.”  \nThe United States Of America was hurt by uneven military leadership and helped enormously by political leadership that evolved and grew in purpose and resolve. \nIn this this week’s presentation we will trace the dual paths of the USA and the traitors and note the emergence of General Grant. \n  \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 per class from everyone who registers for the class. SUMMARY:1861 The Civil War Year By Year - Reflections On Amercia's Deadliest War
DESCRIPTION:1860 & 1861 The Civil War Year By Year\nEvery Wednesday in June\, we will look at a different year in the Civil War! The Declaration Of Independence stated “We hold these truths to be self evident\, that all men are created equal…” The Civil War tested whether or not we really meant it. In 1860 and 1861 the Civil War began. \nThis exciting four week series will trace the history of the Civil War. In 1860\, our nation faced one of the most crucial elections in our history.  Four great candidates stood for office.  The only real issue was slavery.  Today we see the practice of kidnapping human beings and holding them against their will as abhorrent.  In 1860\, the economy and social structure of an entire region of the United States was built on the premise that kidnapping and bondage were acceptable means of making money.  Our four week series begins with an in depth look at the Lincoln Douglas debates of 1858\, the election of 1860\, and the secession of  the Confederate States. \nIn 1861 the Civil War really began.  We saw American citizens in revolt against the Constitution while holding millions of people against their will.  We saw personal tragedies unfold as the tender hearted Abraham Lincoln saw the body of the first American patriot killed by the rebels brought back to Washington DC.  The body was that of Elmer Ellsworth.  He was a close friend of Lincoln’s. The death of Elmer Ellsworth represents the personal nature of this deadly fight. \nPeople happily brought picnic baskets to watch the First Battle Of Bull Run unfold.  By the end of the battle\, America knew was was not glamorous and victory would be difficult. Among the topics to be covered are the election of 1860\, the secession of the terrorist groups and the first year of the Civil War. \nWe will explore how in 1861 the Civil War began a great test of America’s moral purpose\, military strength and future direction began. \nToday the battlefields of the Civil War are quiet. \n \nWe will see how they were the sites of the greatest struggle in American history. \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 per class from everyone who registers for the class. You can simply pay $20.00 (or\, if you can afford it\, $25.00 with the overage covering folks who cannot afford to pay)  for the entire series or just join any individual class. SUMMARY:Sam Giancana - Master Of The Mob\, Murderer Of JFK?
DESCRIPTION:Forget Al Capone. \nCapone ran the Chicago Outfit brutally and very publicly for just a couple of years before being sent to prison on income tax charges. Tony Accordo and Paul Rccca ran the Outfit until 1957 when they turned over day to day control to Sam “Momo” Giancana. \nMuch More Powerful Than Capone!\nSam Giancana would rise to a position much\, much more powerful than the thuggish Al Capone ever dreamt of achieving! \nGiancana feuded with Robert Kennedy as he became the CIA liaison with the Mob. Unlike Capone\,Sam Giancana vastly expanded the operations of the Chicago Outfit into Las Vegas\, into California and became the most powerful Mafia leader in the country. He was connected to JFK through Peter Lawford and Frank Sinatra. According to a number of histories\, he and John F. Kennedy actually shared a mistress in common! Some believe Sam Giancana was behind the murder of JFK. And just before he was set to testify under oath before the Senate\, Sam Giancana was murdered in his home. A home that was under FBI surveillance and “guarded by the police! \nCuba\nWhen the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) planned to assassinate Fidel Castro\, the called on Sam Giancana to oversee the unlawful murder. While the complicated and illegal plot ultimately failed\, the implications were clear.  The CIA was working closely with Sam Giancana – the most important and influential Mafia leader in the USA. J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI only learned of the plot because they were tapping Giancana’s phone and watching him 24/7! \n  \nWomen\nGiancana carried on a very public romance with super popular\,squeaky clean\, all-American girl Phyllis McGuire\, whom the FBI bugged. He consorted with Marilyn Monroe (some say he caused her death) and other famous women.  The stories are perplexing and fascinating. You will not want to miss this one of a kind Zoom  presentation. \nThis will be a live ZOOM class\, to allow for questions at the end. THE ZOOM LINK IS BELOW! \nThe class runs Friday. MAY 29 from 11:30 am – 1 pm. \n\nSeats Available: This class is limited to 100 participants and will not be recorded. Current Available seats: 15 of 100. \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 from everyone who registers for the class. SUMMARY:The Election Of 1960
DESCRIPTION:The election of 1960 was one of the most dramatic elections in American history. until the halted recount in the election of 2000\, it was the closest  Presidential election in our lifetimes.  This riveting  multimedia presentation features amazing anecdotes\, entry insights\, and numerous fascinating film clips to help put this most momentous campaign into perspective. \nRichard M. Nixon was coming off of eight years serving as vice president to Dwight D. Eisenhower\, one of the most popular Republican presidents of all time. Nixon had experience in domestic and foreign-policy and was a veteran many tough campaigns. still very young\, he offered a new face for the Republican Party’s future. He became the first sitting vice president to earn his party’s nomination since John C Breckenridge exactly 100 years earlier \n  \nJohn F. Kennedy was only a few years younger than Nixon\, whom he considered something of a friend. Kennedy was seen as a lightweight in the Senate\, according to the Democrat’s Majority Leader\, Lyndon Johnson. JFK was seen as proposing no major legislation. Significantly\, Kennedy often missed long stretches of time in the Senate due to surgeries and hospitalizations. However Kennedy was a war hero\, handsome\, charismatic and a best-selling author. He had to defeat a number of older and better known Democrats to earn the nomination. \nAnd then came the campaign for president! Nixon’s national reputation vs. Kennedy’s cool and charisma. With polls showing just a slight Nixon believed throughout the summer\, the two men agreed to something that had never happened before: a series of presidential debates. Those debates turned the course of the election and changed politics\, They demonstrated the importance of television in future campaigns. Throw into the mix the rest of Martin Luther King Jr.\, Nixon’s phlebitis\, Kennedy’s mafia connections\, mystery votes in Illinois and odd campaign choices by Nixon and you have the makings of a fascinating campaign! \nPLEASE NOTE: This class is offered through the College Of Lake County and registration is required. \n

SUMMARY:Who Killed JFK – Historian Presents a Modern Analysis
DESCRIPTION: Who Killed JFK?\n I’ll Tell You! \n \nThe murder of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked the nation. A suspect was quickly arrested and subsequently murdered. President Lyndon Johnson appointed a blue ribbon committee – the Warren Commission – to answer the question: who killed JFK? \nTheir conclusion was that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. Immediately\, the public was skeptical. Stephen King described Oswald as “a semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur.” How could such an insignificant loser pull off such a dastardly crime? And why did Jack Ruby\, accused of being a Mob member\, kill Oswald? \nWe have been through with whispered knowledge of conspiracies and confessions and coverups. And so the public has asked for an explanation of the “magic bullet.” \nAnd the contradictory witness statements. \nAnd Oswald’s shadowy past. \nAnd all of the “secret files.” \nAnd all of the conspiracy theories. \nAnd all of the “mysterious deaths” associated with the assassination? \nBooks and articles\, movies and documentaries have raised in innumerable questions about who killed JFK. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis\nSo who killed JFK? I will attempt to answer as many of these questions as possible. First I will attempt to separate historical fact from theory & speculation. Second\, I will show what the historical record actually indicates happened. We have access to much more information today then the Warren Commission had in 1963/4 or the House of Representatives had in 1977. Third\, we will examine what modern computer forensics can tell us about the crime. For instance\, the Warren Commission had access to the “Zapruder Film.”  Today\, we can use computers to enhance and analyze the film. We can use modern technology to analyze the path of each of the bullets that were fired. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis \nAnd we can use computers to isolate the mysterious sounds captured by a Dallas motorcycle patrolman.  In 1977\, the House of Representatives believed that the recording showed four shots fired in Dealy Plaza.  The National Academy of Science\, among many other groups\, have taken the same sound recordings and used state-of-the-art technology to analyze them. What do we know now? \nYou may not agree with my conclusions\, but you will definitely learn a lot and come away with a new perspective about the historical record of who killed JFK. \nBONUS! SUMMARY:1920 - History In Perspective
DESCRIPTION:1920 was a fascinating year that ushered in an amazing decade!  \nAlthough Americans tend to think of “The Roaring 20s” as the era of flappers\, bathtub gin\, Al Capone\, a booming stock market\, and a much more liberal sexual atmosphere\, the decade was far more complex. The atmosphere of social liberalism was being counterbalanced by the non-stop election of conservative Republicans\, a major pushback from organized religion\, and signs of a deteriorating economy despite seeming prosperity.  \n1920 saw two seemingly opposite trends converge – Americans elected very conservative\, old-fashioned politicians at the same time they were beginning to flout conventional norms of behavior. As an example: we outlawed the sale of alcohol and almost  immediately there grew a culture of drinking\, new criminal organizations to sell booze and the glorification of those who opposed the very government they had just elected! \nWe will focus in on the specific year of 1920 – taking a deep dive into the culture\, sports\, movies\, economy and major news stories of a most fascinating\, transitional year!

SUMMARY:Charles Lindbergh - A Life In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Charles Lindbergh led one of the most unique lives of any American! \nLindbergh’s life played out in three acts. The first is the most celebrated and best known. The “aw shucks” small town boy with a passion for flying became the first person ever to fly solo across the Atlantic. “Lucky Lindy” was the most famous\, popular and revered man of his time. Everyone around the world admired and respected him! \nThe second act of the life Col. Charles Lindbergh took on a much darker tone. When\nhis infant son was kidnapped from crib while his parents were at home\, Lindbergh was again the biggest news story in the country. While police frantically searched for the kidnapped boy\, Lindbergh did everything in his power to find his son. He had gangsters trying to help\, followed “psychics” to obscure locations and accompanied an innocent civilian who strangely became the go-between with the kidnappers.  \nAfter the boy’s body was discovered\, Charles Lindbergh became a star witness in the second “Crime Of The Century.” (Click here to read about the first!) The verdict in that trial became as controversial and widely debated as would the O. J. Simpson case near the end of the century. Books are still being written about it! \nThe third act of Lindbergh’s life is the least known and the most bizarre. \nCharles Lindbergh\, the All-American hero\, became on of the nation’s most prominent supporters of the Nazi movement in Germany. Both in America and in Europe\, Lindbergh lent his famous name and considerable influence to try and convince the USA to support Hitler! \nYou will be amazed at the fascinating and complex life of Charles Lindbergh!

SUMMARY:1945
DESCRIPTION:Join me in our time capsule for this amazing look back at one of the most important years in the history of the world: 1945. \nIn 1945 World War II finally came to an end. After the deaths of both Adolph Hitler and Franklin D. Roosevelt\, the evil Nazi empire finally surrendered. In the Pacific Theatre\, fierce battles came to an end with the dropping of the world’s first atomic bombs. The destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war – but ushered in a vastly more dangerous era. \nWe will look at the most popular movies\, radio shows and songs of 1945\, discover what famous were born and which died during the year\, learn about what everyday consumer items cost and look back at the amazing\, ultimately heartbreaking World Series run of the Chicago Cubs! \nAmerica 75 years ago was very different – and tremendously important to how we live today.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Reconsidering The Presidents
DESCRIPTION:At one time\, Harry Truman was generally considered to be the worst President of all time! At their worst\, President Truman’s approval numbers were even lower than Presidents G. W. Bush\, Jimmy Carter or Donald Trump!  Yet today\, many historians consider him to be one of the best Presidents! How\, why\, and when did this shift in historical opinion take place? Could Presidents Bush\, Clinton or Trump someday be seen in a more favorable light? \nThe sam is true for President Ulysses S. Grant. For almost 150 years\, Grant was often used as an example of a terrible President. Although public opinion polling did not exist in Grant’s day. his stock has certainly over the years. \nThe reverse can be true as well. Andrew Jackson’s legacy has suffered a serious decline over the years \nIn this unique multimedia presentation\, we will consider why historians have changed their minds about some of the Presidents!
