SUMMARY:What Just Happened - January 2023 Current Events
DESCRIPTION:Once a month\, you can be part of a current events discussion presentation discussion with a twist. Award-winning  professional historian Barry Bradford will help us learn “What Just Happened?” \nWhat makes this session so unique is that we will not just talk about our opinions about the news but also learn the history behind the events and their underlying significance. For instance\, when the Republicans deadlocked over their election of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy\, it wasn’t the first time a speaker election went into overtime. We’ll learn about those historic occasions. Then we will understand WHY the Republican party was so divided over this issue. The history of that division will inform us about future decisions and political consequences. \nWe’ll go through a number of the most exciting events of the month\, and there will be plenty of time for you to ask questions and offer your thoughts. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: ALL comments and questions must be respectfully asked using appropriate language. Speeches and misinformation will be terminated at the express choice of the moderator. \nTHIS PROGRAM WILL BE PRESENTED IN PERSON AND SIMULTANEOUSLY ONLINE. \n

SUMMARY:Diana: Life Of The The People's Princess
DESCRIPTION:Diana: Glamorous And Tragic Life Of a Princess \nFREE ZOOM PRESENTATION \nLady Diana Spencer was the “People’s Princess” beloved throughout the world for her compassion as much as for her glamour. \nSweet\, pretty Lady Diana Spencer was a shy and charming kindergarten teacher when she caught the eye of Prince Charles\, heir to the throne of Great Britain. At first\, to the public\, her story seemed like a fairytale. A pretty young girl had been plucked out of obscurity to marry the dashing Prince. But the truth of Diana’s private life was very different from the public perception.   \nIn 1981\, an estimated 750 million people around the world watched the beautiful 20-year-old Diana Spencer marry her handsome Prince Charles amidst all the pomp and circumstance of the British Empire. But barely more than 10 years later\, she was bitterly divorced with two children\, suffering from severe depression and eating disorders\, brought out by the realization that her cool and diffident husband had been having an affair with a long-time girlfriend\, Camilla Parker-Bowles. \nAfter Princess Diana’s ugly public divorce\, she became an outcast from the British Royal family. Despite that\, she became even more beloved by the British public! She was seen as an affectionate and doting mother\, an icon of fashion style\, and\, most importantly\, a tireless champion for humanitarian causes. Diana met with Mother Teresa in an effort to bring attention to the global aid epidemic. She risked her life to try and read war zones of the scourge of land mines. \nWherever she went\, whatever she did\, and whomever she dated\, Diana’s every move was followed by the insatiable British press. They detailed Diana’s every date\, every vacation\, and every outfit. \nWhen Princess Diana died in a horrible car crash\, she was mourned by the world. The outpouring of grief in Britain forever changed the nation’s view of the monarchy. Diana’s unexpected life\, veering between glamour and tragedy\, and her sudden and controversial death make for an unforgettable story. \nCLICK HERE FOR REGISTRATION FOR THIS FREE ZOOM PRESENTATION \n

SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans simply do not know very much about the Revolutionary War.   \nAlthough certain images from the Revolutionary War are seared into our memory – Washington Crossing the Delaware and the signing of the Declaration of Independence –  many people would be hard-pressed to name a major battle\, a leading general\, or even how the War For Independence ended.  Recent events in America have caused some to question whether we should even have statues of George Washington on public display. \nTHE REVOLUTIONARY WAR\n In this four-part series on the Revolutionary War\, we will examine why the freest and most prosperous colonials in the world decided to declare independence from a mother country that had protected them. We will look at the roots of the war\, the Declaration of Independence\, the early battles\, including Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, before transitioning into a longer look at the seven years of fighting necessary for America to begin its experiment in participatory democracy. We will also look at the amazing and diverse leaders who guided America. Benjamin Franklin\,James Monroe\, John Adams\, Paul Revere\, George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, and Alexander Hamilton will be some of the people we will meet. I encourage you to learn more about how America came to be! \n

SUMMARY:Roots Of The Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In this exciting and thought-provoking presentation\, we will examine the roots of the Revolution.  \nThe American colonies were prosperous and enjoyed unprecedented freedom from the rule of the British empire. So what went wrong?  Why did the Continental Congress feel the need to protest\, raise an Army\, and declare independence? We will take a deep dive into the events\, arguments\, and personalities involved with the beginning of the American experiment.

SUMMARY:Queen Elizabeth
DESCRIPTION:At this writing\, Queen Elizabeth is the longest-reigning monarch in the world. When she ascended the throne\, a shy young girl saw her uncle abdicate the throne and advocate pro-German views in the years leading up to World War II. She watched as her father struggled to overcome a speech impediment and then work tirelessly to inspire the British people during the Second World War. His death at a young age propelled an unprepared and timid girl to the most important throne in Europe. \nQueen Elizabeth’s 50-year reign has seen enormous changes to the British monarchy\, the nation she serves\, and to the world at large. We will examine how Queen Elizabeth has grown in the job despite major stumbles\, including her epic mishandling of the sudden\, tragic death of Princess Diana. Her unparalleled life gives us great insight into the changes brought about by a rapidly changing world in the wake of World War II. \n

SUMMARY:Meghan Markle And Wallis Simpson - American Royalty
DESCRIPTION:Wallis Simpson and Prince Edward’s scandalous relationship led to a Royal abdication and quite nearly brought down the British Monarchy. The engagement of American actress\, model\, and philanthropist Meghan Markle to Prince Harry of Great Britain caused many people in America and England to ask the same question: “Who is Meghan Markle?” \nThe interest was so intense that in December 2018\, Google declared that “Meghan Markle” was the most searched name in the entire year! \nThe short answer is that Meghan Markle is a deeply compassionate and quite brilliant graduate of Northwestern University (with degrees in International Relations and Theater! The biracial American divorcee was a star on a popular cable TV show called “Suits” after a stint as a sexy  ‘briefcase girl’ on “Deal Or No Deal.”  But look deeper\, and you find that the remarkable Meghan Markle also ran a very influential motivational website with millions of followers and actively\, passionately served in numerous charitable enterprises. So while she is not as famous as Rita Hayworth or Grace Kelly\, Meghan Markle is a wonderful person and already very popular in England! \nWallis Simpson was the twice-divorced\, promiscuous\, social-climbing American who bewitched the weak-willed\, promiscuous future King of England. She was still married when she began her affair with the fitter King – and was actively cheating on him with another married man! Although Hitler said Wallis would make “A great Queen\,” the Royal Family and the British people thought differently. After King Edward’s abdication\, they were effectively banished from Britain! \nThis fascinating multimedia presentation will look at these two very different and very controversial women! \n

SUMMARY:Diana: Death Of The The People's Princess
DESCRIPTION:Diana: Tragic Death Of a Princess\nLady Diana Spencer was the “People’s Princess” beloved throughout the world for her compassion as much as for her glamour. But the truth of Diana’s private life was very\, very different from the public perception.   \nIn 1981\, an estimated 750 million people around the world watched the beautiful 20-year-old Diana Spencer marry her handsome Prince Charles amidst all the pomp and circumstance of the British Empire. But barely more than 10 years later she was bitterly divorced with two children\, suffering from severe depression and eating disorders\, brought out on by the realization that her cool and diffident husband had been having an affair with a long time girlfriend\, Camilla Parker-Bowles. \nAfter Princess Diana’s ugly public divorce\, she became an outcast from the British Royal family. Despite that\, she became even more beloved by the British public! She was seen as an affectionate and doting mother\, an icon of fashion style\, and most importantly as a tireless champion for humanitarian causes. Diana met with Mother Teresa in an effort to bring attention to the global aid epidemic. She risked her life to try and read war zones of the scourge of land mines. \nWherever she went\, whatever she did and whomever she dated\, Diana’s every move was followed by the insatiable British press. They detailed Diana’s every date\, every vacation\, and every outfit. \nWhen Princess Diana died in a horrible car crash she was mourned by the world. The outpouring of grief in Britain forever changed the nation’s view of the monarchy. Diana’s unexpected life\, veering between glamour and tragedy and her sudden and controversial death makes for an unforgettable story. \nTWO PARTS! SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War - Part II
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the very intriguing second (and concluding) session of our program about the Revolutionary War.! \nAlthough certain images from the Revolutionary War are seared into our memory – Washington Crossing the Delaware  and the signing of the Declaration of Independence –  many people would be hard-pressed to name a major battle\, a leading general or even how the War For Independence ended.  Recent events in America have caused some to question whether we should even have statues of George Washington on public display. \nTHE REVOLUTIONARY WAR\n In this four-part series on the Revolutionary War we will examine why the freest and most prosperous colonials in the world decided to declare independence from a mother country that had protected them. We will look at the roots of the war\, the Declaration of Independence\, the early battles including Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill before transitioning into a longer look at the seven years of fighting necessary for America to begin its experiment in participatory democracy. We will also look at the amazing and diverse leaders who guided America. Benjamin Franklin\,James Monroe\, John Adams\, Paul Revere\, George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, and Alexander Hamilton will be some of the people whom we will meet. SUMMARY:Wallis Simpson (American Royalty Series)
DESCRIPTION:The King of England abdicated his throne in order to be with “the woman I love.” Some people see it as the most romantic gestures in history. Others see his marriage to a twice divorceed\, promiscuous woman from Baltimore as the symptom of a weak man under the spell of a domineering woman who shared his passion for drinking\, luxury and the high life.  \nWallis Simpson is a complicated woman whose life is shrouded in controversy. As an American who marrieed into the British royal family\, she was an object of both admiration and derision. Certainly her role in leading to a Constitutional crisis in Great Britain is one of the most unique stories in English history! \nIn this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will look at the unusual personal  history of Wallis Simpson before she met the future King Edward. Then we’ll look at the oddly compelling relationship between the lightweight King and the aspirational divorcee from Maryland.  \nThe story will captivate you as we examine how the relationship between Edward and Wallis opened a chain of events that would unexpectedly bring Elizabeth into position to become the future Queen of England. And we will delve deeply into how their support of Hitler caused them to become pariahs and exiles!

SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans simply do not know very much about the Revolutionary War. I encourage you to learn more about how America came to be!

SUMMARY:Diana: Life And Death Of The People's Princess
DESCRIPTION:Diana: Glamorous And Tragic Life And Death Of a Princess\nShe was the “People’s Princess” beloved for her compassion as much as for her glamour. \nWherever she went\, whatever she did and whomever she dated\, Diana’s her every move was followed by the insatiable British press. They detailed DIana’s every date\, every vacation\, and every outfit. \nWhen Princess Diana died in a horrible car crash she was mourned by the world. The outpouring of grief in Britain forever changed the nation’s view of the monarchy. Diana’s unexpected life\, veering between glamour and tragedy and her sudden and controversial death make for an unforgettable story. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Over There: America In World War I
DESCRIPTION:It was “The War To End All Wars” and “The War To Make The World Safe For Democracy.” When Woodrow Wilson reversed the policy of American non-involvement in foreign wars\, he broke a tradition that had begun with George Washington. The role of America in World War I is still vitally important as our nation makes strategic decisions on both peace and war. \nThe effects of World War I are both obvious (the rise of the Nazi government in Germany) and less immediately apparent. As an example\, as a result of the involvement of America In World War I\, the groundwork was laid for the eventual establishment of Israel. \nOver There: America In World War I\nThis fast-moving and fascinating multimedia presentation will trace the roots of American involvement in “The Great War\,” including how it reshaped the major political parties. \nWe will look at the military participation of American troops fighting for the first time on European soil and then look at the unexpected impact of the peace process President Wilson designed. \nYou will be amazed at how it laid the groundwork for the rise of Hitler\, the start of World War II\, and even the War in Vietnam! \n
