SUMMARY:Jewish Heroes Of The Civil Rights Movement (PM)
DESCRIPTION:Some people incorrectly think of the civil rights movement as African-American people versus white people. \nThe truth is that many white people\, including many Jewish Americans\, provided physical\, emotional\, and monetary support to the movement. It would be more accurate to describe the civil rights battles of the 1950s and 60s as a battle between good and evil. \nThis inspiring and fascinating multimedia presentation will examine how Jewish Americans committed themselves to Dr. King’s goals of freedom\, voting rights\, community\, and an end to discrimination. We will examine \n“King repeatedly used the Jewish experience as a model of success over oppression. He respected and admired the values taught by Judaism and\, as a deeply religious man\, felt inspired by the Torah itself. He was sure that an alliance between blacks and Jews was fundamental to progress in civil rights. King felt a sense of kinship with the Jewish people and welcomed — even expected – – Jewish support and felt let down when it was not forthcoming.” Rabbi Marc Schneier \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free; I am struggling but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. SUMMARY:Harry Belafonte (PM)
DESCRIPTION:This has become one of my favorite new programs. And it is undoubtedly one of the most surprising programs I have ever researched! \nWhen I began my research\, I thought I would talk about a popular entertainer from the 1950s who introduced calypso music to America. \nAs I dug deeper\, I quickly realized that Harry Belafonte was one of the civil rights movement’s most important and influential leaders. In early  1968\, Johnny Carson turned over the Tonight Show to Harry Belafonte for an entire week! The “sit-in\,” as it was called\, featured Belafonte interviewing guests\, including Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King! \nYou’ll find out that Harry Belafonte was one of Martin Luther King’s closest friends and most trusted advisers\, deeply involved in the civil rights movement at every turn. \nSo whether you prefer my “straight history” presentations or my popular culture presentations\, this one is for you! \nThis makes for a unique multimedia presentation. \nWe will watch fabulous clips of Harry Belafonte performing spectacular calypso numbers –  and we will also hear him criticize Barack Obama for not doing enough to help African-Americans! \nI urge you to sign up for this program. There is no other entertainer or activist who combines the unique characteristics\, charismatic personality\, and thoughtful philosophy of Harry Belafonte! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free; I am struggling but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. SUMMARY:What Just Happened - March 2023 Current Events (PM)
DESCRIPTION:Once a month\, you can be part of a current events discussion presentation discussion with a twist. Award-winning  professional historian Barry Bradford will help us learn “What Just Happened?” \nThis session is unique because we will not just talk about our opinions about the news but also learn the history behind the events and their underlying significance. For instance\, when the Republicans deadlocked over their election of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy\, it wasn’t the first time a speaker election went into overtime. We’ll learn about those historic occasions. Then we will understand WHY the Republican party was so divided over this issue. The history of that division will inform us about future decisions and political consequences. \nWe’ll go through a number of the most exciting events of the month\, and there will be plenty of time for you to ask questions and offer your thoughts. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: ALL comments and questions must be respectfully asked using appropriate language. SUMMARY:What Just Happened - February 2023 Current Events (PM)
Speeches and misinformation will be terminated at the express choice of the moderator. \nTHIS PROGRAM WILL BE PRESENTED ONLINE. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:History Vs. the Movies: Mississippi Burning
DESCRIPTION: History Vs. the Movies: Mississippi Burning\nMississippi Burning: The Civil Rights Era is one of the most exciting\, important\, and electrifying eras in American history. \nIt had everything from a cinematic standpoint: dynamic lead characters\, powerful and determined villains\, mystery\, mood\, motivation\, and manipulation. Nonetheless\, movies about the era have generally not been hits\, and despite the hype about Selma\, no great masterpiece of filmmaking has yet emerged. “Mississippi Burning”  is a brilliant film but utter nonsense from a historical point of view. “Selma” is a maddening jumble. In its sections on Martin Luther King\, it is extraordinary. In its sections on Lyndon Johnson\, it is entirely misleading. “Ghosts of Mississippi” is an earnest and well-made film about the trial of the murderer of Medgar Evers. However\, unless you already knew quite a bit about Medgar Evers\, you would leave the film wondering who exactly he was. \nSome of the best films about the Civil Rights Movement have been made-for-TV films. Clark Johnson directed “Boycott”  for HBO\, and it combines arresting visuals with superb acting. The Rosa Parks made-for-TV movie was likewise excellent. Spike Lee directed an outstanding documentary\, “Four Little Girls.”  But so far\, a genuine cinematic masterpiece about the Civil Rights Era has eluded filmmakers. \nThis fast-moving and thought-provoking multimedia presentation will look at clips from some films about the Civil Rights Movement.   Our particular focus will be on “Mississippi Burning.” Using inside stories\, personal anecdotes\, and a clear timeline\, we will see how this brilliantly made film distorted history and changed America’s perceptions about the Movement. \nCheck this out: in “Mississippi Burning\,”  the FBI gets an invaluable ship to find where the bodies are buried. The screenwriter and director had to fictionalize where the tip came from. That is because the mystery informant had never been revealed. Working with the brilliant investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell\, I was able to help figure out where the tip had come from – Jerry uncovered the identity of the mysterious “Mr. X.” Click here to find out who he was! \n.

SUMMARY:Sidney Poitier
DESCRIPTION:Sidney Poitier is\, without question\, one of the greatest actors in the history of American film. \nAdditionally\, Sidney Poitier is the man who broke the color barrier in Hollywood. Like Barack Obama or Jackie Robinson\, he was more than just a symbol. He was a man of great talent\, skill and accomplishment. His success was not only his\, but a reminder of how America had squelched the talents of so many talented citizens.  \nMany fans of the “Golden Era” of “classic films” – including myself – have had to come to grips with the racist\, segregationist nature of those movies. Judy Garland\, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant were great actors and their films remain wildly enjoyable. But look at the films as a whole and you will see the leading roles are all played by white actors. Black actors appear as slaves\, domestics\, field hands\, or drivers. As great as Garland\, Astaire and Grant were\, it’s important to remember they were given opportunities denied to Lena Horne\, the Nicholas Brothers or any black man before Sidney Poitier. The racism of classic Hollywood denied us from appreciating some great talent. Just as the quality of baseball became better when it integrated\, so did movies improve after Sidney Poitier helped open the door. A society is stronger when all its citizens can participate. \nHowever\, his career should not be seen only as historic and groundbreaking. He was a great actor! Sidney Poitier\, in his best roles\, was simply magnificent. \nWatch “The Defiant Ones\,” “Blackboard Jungle\,” “Lillies Of The Field\,” “In The Heat Of The Night\,” “To Sir\, With Love\,” and “A Patch Of Blue” and you see a great actor at the top of his game. You can even see him in a movie with Dan Aykroyd! Poitier could be as suave as Cary Grant\, as intense as Humphrey Bogart\, as relatable as Jimmy Stewart. And unlike those other great actors\, Sidney Poitier went on to have a fabulous director of money making movies! \nJoin us for a fascinating multimedia look at the life and career of the great Sidney Poitier! \n

SUMMARY:1972 - America 50 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Our time capsule lands 50 years ago in the tumultuous year of 1972. As the Vietnam war dragged on\, the battles between Archie Bunker and his son-in-law\, ‘Meathead Mike’ Stivic accurately reflected the deep divisions in 1972 America. ‘All In The Family’  Nixon went to Russia and to China and then won overwhelming reelection in the shadow of the just emerging story of Watergate. \n1972 brought us great films\, a terrorist massacre at the Olympics\, rising wages\, and a changing style of TV.  Jackie Robinson and Harry Truman died while Dwayne Johnson and when is Paltrow were born. Mark Spitz and Olga Korbut became sports legends and don McLean anthem “American Pie” shut off the charts. You will be amazed at what a fascinating year 1972 words!

SUMMARY:Our First First Ladies
DESCRIPTION:The Founding Father never gave a moment’s thought to the role of the President wife. In fact\, the term “First Lay” itself would be unknown for fifty years! \nNonetheless\, the first women to hold the title of “First Lady”  were in amazing group of strong and dedicated women! Martha Washington\, Abigail Adams and Dolley Madison\, in particular\, were vastly influential in ways the country did not yet recognize. They were very different one from another and each added something unique and wonderful to the national experience. Beginning with Martha Washington we will trace the early years of the first ladies.

SUMMARY:Two Heroes From History
DESCRIPTION:Today\, I challenge you to join me to learn about two fabulous heroes from history – even though you are probably not familiar with either name. This is the kind of history I love to present. It’s challenging and yet so intriguing to take the time to learn something completely unexpected and at the same time unfamiliar. \nWe will focus on Daisy Bates. Ms. Bates was a civil rights leader\, a journalist\, and courageous warrior who led the students that became known as The Little Rock Nine. How did this Arkansas woman lead movement that would shock the nation\, focus attention on segregation\, and caused President Eisenhower to send federal troops into open Central High school in Little Rock\, Arkansas? \nThen we will look at the controversial and complex Reverend Vernon Johns. He led the most influential African-American church in Alabama\, pushing the educated elite congregation to become involved in the civil rights movement. When he was eventually fired\, the church brought in a new pastor they considered less controversial. The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.! \nDON’T STOP READING!\nYou may be thinking that you don’t want to sign up because you’ve never heard of either of these people. I understand that. SUMMARY:Medgar Evers: Is It Ever Too Late To Do The Right Thing?
DESCRIPTION:Medgar Evers Is My Hero.\nMedgar Evers\, a brave Civil Rights leader\, was assassinated in the driveway of his home\, murdered by a Ku Klax Klan leader bent on blood. \nWhat offense had Medgar Evers committed? He was trying to register African Americans to vote in Mississippi in 1963. \nHis murderer was quickly identified – but lived as a free man for thirty years until an unstoppable wife\, a dogged newspaperman\, and a brilliant prosecutor managed to get the case reopened.  On the fortieth anniversary of Medgar Evers’ murder\, I hosted the official National Day Of Remembrance and had the chance to meet and befriend his widow\, his family\, and many of his friends. I will bring their tremendously moving personal stories to life. \nMyrlie Evers hugs Barry Bradford’s students. \nThis multimedia presentation is very personal to me. You will be amazed by the story – it is jam-packed with inside information on the thrilling trial\, amazing anecdotes\, and a heavy dose of drama.  The trial of the murderer of Medgar Evers proved to be an important and emotional turning point in American law and history will come alive as you witness whether it is ever too late to do the right thing. \n  \n
