SUMMARY:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges
DESCRIPTION:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges\nYou may be asking yourself: “So who is this guy\, and why have I never heard of him?” My response is: “Challenge yourself to become enthralled with the filmmaker whose name you may not know but whose movies are unforgettable!” \nThat is exactly the challenge I gave to screenwriter Jarett Miller. Jarett\, 26\, is a frequent guest when I speak about movies. In addition to being a screenwriter who has worked on major projects like “Wonder Woman\,” “It\,” and “The Umbrella Academy\,” among others\, Jarett has an advanced degree in film and a passion for great storytelling. For this unique two-part series\, I challenged Jarett to watch some of the great Preston Sturges movies. Our course description matches what I told him! I do hope you will sign up! \nIn a span of just seven years\, Preston Sturges had an unparalleled run of making some of the greatest American movies of all time.    \nThe films of Preston Sturges are absolutely unique\, unforgettable\, and utterly brilliant. However\, although his Hollywood career lasted over 35 years\, the movies Preston Sturges wrote and directed between 1938 and 1945 alone were enough to cement his reputation as one of the most influential directors and respected screenwriters of all time.  After becoming the first screenwriter of the talking movie era to direct his own films\,  Preston Sturges created a unique body of work that still delights challenges and amuses audiences 80 years later. Furthermore\, his personal life was as unexpected\, unique\, and memorable as his movies! \nJoin Jarett and me as we explore the movies written and directed by one of the great filmmakers\, Preston Sturges! We will explore his films in chronological order. Join us for both parts of this great two-week program. \n

SUMMARY:Carl Reiner
DESCRIPTION:Carl Reiner was one of the funniest men ever to appear\, write for\, or direct a TV episode! \nAt 97\, he was the oldest celebrity active on Twitter – and never contemplating retiring from show business! Join me for a fast\, funny\, and fascinating look at one of America’s classic comic treasures\, Mr. Carl Reiner \nCarl Reiner first exploded into the American consciousness as the straight man on the immortal Sid Caesar’s great TV shows. \nWorking alongside writing legends including Mel Brooks\, Woody Allen\, Neil Simon\, Selma Diamond\, and Larry Gelbart\, Carl Reiner became one of the volatile Caesar’s favorite co-stars and most trusted writers. \nTheir classic “Professor” sketches are still hilarious sixty-five years after they first aired. And his lifelong friendship and collaboration with Mel Brooks began as a result! \nAfter the Sid Caesar shows ended\, Carl Reiner created The DIck Van Dyke Show. This program would prove to be one of the most influential\, funniest\, and most transformative situation comedies of all time. \nAfter Reiner and Van Dyke ended the show at the height of its popularity\, the brilliant writer/producer/director began working on feature films. \nCarl Reiner created the cult classics “Where’s Poppa” and “Oh\, God” before embarking on a brilliant partnership with Steve Martin. The Reiner/Martin films include some of the best comedies of Steve Martin’s career\, including “The Jerk\,” “All Of Me\,” and “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. \nWe’ll enjoy clips and stories from all of this – and\, of course – the brilliant “2\,000 Year Old Man” routines with Mel Brooks. Don’t miss this excellent presentation!

SUMMARY:Looking Back - Looking Ahead - 2023 in Review/Predictions for 2024
DESCRIPTION:This is\, without question\, my most eagerly awaited program of the year returns! Last year\, this program sold out at every venue – so reserve your seats early! \nPerhaps it’s just the era we are in\, but this year seemed to be one of the most extraordinary of our lifetimes. We saw a major and terrifying war involving Israel\, the former president of the United States of America being found responsible for sexual assault and for fraud in separate courts while facing significant criminal charges in several venues\, the House of Representatives in utter chaos\, Chicago sports teams collapsing\, a major crisis of migrants at the southern border and in Chicago\, and a wild presidential election awaiting us. \nIn early December of each year\, I present a look back at the year coming to a close. I will list: \n√ Top Ten News Stories of 2023 \n√ Top Ten Quotes of 2023 \n√ Top Ten New Words of 2023 \n√ Important Deaths of 2023 \nPREDICTIONS!\nAnd then comes the part everyone enjoys – I will make ten specific predictions for 2024! Who will be elected president? Will Donald Trump be sent to prison? Will a solution be found for the migrant crisis or for inflation? What new breakthroughs will science and technology offer us in the coming year? \nAnd just so you can keep me honest\, I will show you precisely what I predicted for 2023. We will assess how correct – or not – I was in my predictions for this year!! \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Betty White: America's Favorite Potty Mouthed Grandma
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE! This is a live and in-person presentation. The registration fee includes a lovely lunch! Registration info is below! The cost is $22 through the wonderful Niles Senior Center! \n  \nThe fabulous Betty White has been called an American national treasure – and rightly so! Up until her death at 99\, Betty White was a beacon of positivity even in difficult years! Witty\, working\, and happy\, Betty White it’s a beacon of positivity even in difficult times! \nDid you know that at a key moment in her career\, she risked her job to stand up for Civil Rights? \nBetty White was voted one of America’s most beloved entertainers year in and year out.  In 2018\, she was chosen as the most trusted person in America! You know her as the seemingly sweet we but secretly scheming sexpot Sue Anne Nivens on the iconic  “Mary Tyler Moore Show\,” the endearing\, naïve\, and trusting Rose Nyland on the classic  “Golden Girls\,” and the outrageous and somewhat loopy Elka Ostrovsky on ” Hot in Cleveland.” \n Betty White has been a staple on talk shows\, a host and panelist on game shows\, and has even performed in some popular movies\, including one classic film drama about politics in which she played a U.S. Senator! \nYou may not know that Betty White was a pioneer in the early days of television\, being the first woman to produce her own show!  The amazing Ms. White is a best-selling author and tireless advocate for animals. Most importantly\, she is widely considered one of the nicest people in all show business. This warm\, charming\, and funny presentation is loaded with hilarious video clips and great stories about the one and only Betty White. \n

SUMMARY:Great Fortunes Of The Gilded Age: Rockefeller
DESCRIPTION:  \nDuring the Gilded Age\, America saw a handful of families dominate the economy with staggering fortunes. \nIf I asked you to name the richest American\, you’d probably say Bill Gates or Sam Walton.  Both are from the top of the list! \nToday we focus on the richest man of all time. How rich was John D. Rockefeller?  He was wealthier than Gates and Walton\, and Warren Buffet added together! At one time\, his personal income was almost 2% of the entire American GDP!  SO\, where did Rockefeller get his money?  Oil\, of course – but that is only part of the story. And the rest of the story of this fascinating man is a tale of cold-hearted business practice\, unparalleled personal generosity\, and deep commitment to religion.  What a man! \n \nThis four-week series examines the great fortunes of that fascinating era.  We will attempt to put each into perspective and offer intriguing insights\, modern comparisons\, and historical context for each. By any standard\, John D Rockefeller is the richest Americans of all time. He is far wealthier than Bill Gates or just Bezos. There has never been any person in modern times with more money than the controversial John D Rockefeller! \n#1 Rockefeller \n# 2: Vanderbilt \n#3: Astor
