SUMMARY:Murrow vs. McCarthy The Night Television Grew Up (AM)
DESCRIPTION:In the dark shadow of the early 1950s\, Senator Joseph McCarthy wielded fear like a weapon\, accusing countless Americans of disloyalty with little or no evidence. Few dared to stand against him—until Edward R. Murrow stepped into the fight. In this gripping program\, we explore how Murrow used the young medium of television to challenge McCarthy’s reign of terror\, first through the story of Milo Radulovich\, a young man expelled from the Air Force Reserve without due process\, and then in a direct confrontation that shook the nation. \nMurrow vs. McCarthy: The Night Television Grew Up\nThrough powerful storytelling and historical footage\, we will examine how Murrow and his See It Now team meticulously exposed McCarthy’s tactics\, culminating in the landmark broadcast that many historians consider the night television came of age. Murrow’s steady voice and measured condemnation provided a rallying cry for those who believed in reason\, truth\, and the power of free speech. His actions not only helped curb McCarthy’s influence but also \reshaped the role of television news forever. \nOn March 9\, 1954\, Murrow delivered one of the most courageous broadcasts in American history. In a measured but devastating critique aired on See It Now\, Murrow exposed McCarthy’s tactics\, hypocrisy\, and the cost of silence. It was a moment when television proved it could do more than entertain — it could defend democracy itself. The broadcast electrified the public\, hastening McCarthy’s downfall and forever changing the relationship between journalism and power. \nJoin us for a fascinating look at this pivotal moment in American history. We’ll uncover the behind-the-scenes decisions that led to Murrow’s bold stand\, the national reaction to the broadcasts\, and the lasting impact on journalism and politics. Through Murrow’s example\, we will see how integrity\, courage\, and the responsible use of media can alter the course of a nation. \nREGISTRATION INFORMATION \nCOST\nThe program is available for a minimum contribution of $5.00\, which helps support my work and allows me to continue offering engaging content. \nPAYMENT OPTIONS \nCash/Check\nPayable to: Barry Bradford\nMail to:\nBarry Bradford\nP.O. SUMMARY:The Marx Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Marx Brothers were much\, much better than you remember! Their humor uplifted American spirits during the Depression and established new standards for comedy. The Marx Brothers’ combination of odd and unique talents\, including a harp-playing mime\, a Jewish comic with the worst Italian accent and the most distinctive piano-playing style\, and one of the greatest monologists of all time\, have delighted and baffled classic movie fans since the Depression. They performed alongside Lucille Ball\, sang music written by Irving Berlin and acted in comedies written by the great George S. Kaufmann\, yet many people dimly think of the as analogous to The Three Stooges. \nBut when you look deeper\, you see an amazing immigrant success story\, discover how American popular culture was changing\, and meet four remarkably different and interesting men whose films rank among the best comedies of all time. “Duck Soup” is rightly considered one of the greatest films ever made about politics. Both that film and “A Night At The Opera” are on the AFI list of the 100 best movies! Whether you are a long-time fan of the Marx Brothers\, a skeptic\, or completely unfamiliar with their work\, you are in for a treat with this fun multimedia presentation! \n

SUMMARY:David Letterman vs. Jay Leno: The Battle for The Tonight Show
DESCRIPTION:David Letterman vs. Jay Leno: Battle for The Tonight Show\nSteve Allen & Jack Paar each hosted the Tonight Show for relatively short period of time. The third host\, Johnny Carson held the chair for 30 years and made the Tonight Show the iconic program that it has become. When Carson announced his retirement\, the intense battle to succeed him between David Letterman (Carson’s choice) and Jay Leno (the safe choice) became the stuff of television legend. We know the end of the story: Jay Leno’s manager completely outmaneuvered a humiliated and embittered David Letterman. The two comics had been friends. That friendship is now just a distant memory. Letterman had been promised the job contractually by NBC\, but the behind-the-scenes machinations of Leno’s manager changed all that. Jay Leno became the fourth permanent host of The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson’s last week on the Tonight Show was a very emotional one.  The country had loved Carson and Tonight. \nWhen Jay Leno left the stage in 2014\, the reaction was different.  Although his ratings were solid\, the country did not love Jay Leno. He bristled at the fact that Letterman became the favorite of the critics and very nearly lost his show in the first year due to his poor performance. Meanwhile\, Letterman scuttled his chances of remaining at NBC by launching a personal and bitter attack against the network that had reneged on their agreement to him. David Letterman has always presented himself publicly as an idiosyncratic crank. That is a very fair assessment of his real character. Jay Leno has carefully cultivated a controlled image as the “Nicest Guy In Hollywood.” The closer you look behind the curtain\, you realize Jay Leno is not quite as nice as he seems.  The battle for control of the Tonight Show brought out the worst in Leno and left many broken relationships in its wake. \nDavid Letterman and Jay Leno \nWe’ll learn the behind-the-scenes story of the battle for the Tonight Show\, enjoy many film clips\, and gain a greater perspective on Tonight’s role in American Culture. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Unusual Movie Musicals
DESCRIPTION:What is the greatest movie musical of all time? “Singin’ In The Rain\,” “Grease\,” “The Wizard Of Oz\,” “West Side Story\,” and a number of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films would pop up in many lists. However\, this fun multimedia presentation will not cover an of them! Instead\, you’ll be introduced to some wonderful but decidedly unusual movie musicals. \nWe will see the great Harry Belafonte’s only movie musical – in which he sings music from Bizet’s opera Carmen and a stunning recreation of the Las Vegas strip\, built on a movie soundstage. Each of these unusual films is fabulous in its own way. \nOur cinematic journey will take us from a 1980 film in which Olivia Newton-John plays a daughter of Zeus who roller skates down from Mount Olympus to dance with Gene Kelly before inspiring a struggling artist to build a roller disco (seriously!) to a 1968 full-length\, kaleidoscopic animated feature using voice actors to recreate the Beatles saving us from the Blue Meanies\, this entertaining and quirky program is filled with unexpected delights! \n  \nREGISTRATION IS DIRECTLY THROUGH THE NORTHBROOK SENIOR CENTER!  THE NUMBER IS BELOW!\n  \n
