SUMMARY:Great Fortunes Of The Gilded Age (Andrew Carnegie)
DESCRIPTION:During the Gilded Age\, America saw a handful of families dominate the economy with staggering fortunes. \nIf I asked you to name the richest American\, you’d probably say Bill Gates or Sam Walton.  Both are from the top of the list! \nAt one time\, Andrew Carnegie was the richest man in the world. Then he gave away 90% of his fortune! He founded Carnegie Mellon University and his name is still attached to funding for arts programs across the USA.  How did he earn that money and what did he do with it? How did this tiny Scot invent “scientific philanthropy” – and how did he become the terror of the business world – forcing even the richest men in America to capitulate to him? Was the horrendous death toll of the Johnstown Flood his fault? Did he authorize the massive beatings of his employees when they asked for a raise? With rare video clips\, intriguing insights and fascinating biographical details\, the controversial and compelling life of Andrew Carnegie will take shape before your eyes. \nThis multi-week series examines the great fortunes  of that fascinating era.  We will attempt to put each into perspective and offer intriguing insights\, modern comparisons and historical context for each. Of the nine wealthiest Americans\, six lived during the Gilded Age! \n# 2: Vanderbilt \n#3: Astor \n#4: Girard \n#5: Gates \n#6: Carnegie \n#7: Stewart \n#8 Weyerhaeuser \n#9 Gould \n  \nWhen: Jun 22\, 2021\, 09:00 PM Central Time (the US and Canada) \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMtfuCvqD0pE926H635cdlCtDAitnbknlLr \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Great Fortunes Of The Gilded Age: Rockefeller
DESCRIPTION:During the Gilded Age\, America saw a handful of families dominate the economy with staggering fortunes. \nIf I asked you to name the richest American\, you’d probably say Bill Gates or Sam Walton.  Both are from the top of the list! \nToday we focus on the richest man of all time. How rich was John D. Rockefeller?  He was wealthier than Gates and Walton\, and Warren Buffet added together! At one time\, his personal income was almost 2% of the entire American GDP!  SO\, where did Rockefeller get his money?  Oil\, of course – but that is only part of the story. And the rest of the story of this fascinating man is a tale of cold-hearted business practice\, unparalleled personal generosity\, and deep commitment to religion.  What a man! \n \nThis four-week series examines the great fortunes of that fascinating era.  We will attempt to put each into perspective and offer intriguing insights\, modern comparisons\, and historical context for each. By any standard\, John D Rockefeller is the richest Americans of all time. He is far wealthier than Bill Gates or just Bezos. SUMMARY:Great Fortunes Of The Gilded Age (Astor/Vanderbilt)
DESCRIPTION:During the Gilded Age\, America saw a handful of families dominate the economy with staggering fortunes. \nIf I asked you to name the richest American\, you’d probably say Bill Gates or Warren Buffet.  Both are from the top of the list! \nToday we focus on the earliest American millionaires – John Jacob Astor and Cornelius Vanderbilt. SUMMARY:Harding And Coolidge - Republican Presidents Of The 1920s
DESCRIPTION:After  World War I ended\, America turned away from the liberal progressive era of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and made a sharp turn toward conservatism. In 1920\, the Republicans nominated for president Warren G Harding\, an amiable Sen. from Ohio who promised “A return to normalcy.” For eight years\, the Republicans controlled the presidency\, Congress\, and the national debate. Within twelve fascinating years\, the economy had gone from boom to bust\, and the “Roaring Twenties” had given way to the Great Depression. The seemingly perennial GOP majority evaporated with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Who were the Republican presidents whose pro-business\, low tax\, conservative presidencies led to an explosion and then the demolition of the American economy? They were very dissimilar in their backgrounds\, each with a fascinating back story that you will learn about in this unique multimedia presentation. \n

SUMMARY:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates
DESCRIPTION:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates\n \nWhat do Adlai Stevenson\, George McGovern\, Daniel Webster\, and Wendell Willkie have in common? \nEach ran for President and lost. \nAnd each was an outstanding man who might well have made a great President. \nIn this unique multimedia presentation\, I will share my list of the ten best men to run for President and lose.  I’ll offer fascinating glimpses into the men\, the times and the campaigns.  We will explore why each man failed in his bid and do a bit of speculation on the different directions our country might have taken had the election been decided differently.  For instance\, how would America have responded on the morning of 9-11 if Al Gore had been President? Or if Wendell Willkie had been President on Pearl Harbor Day?  It’s fun to think about and debate! \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates\n  \nHere is a historical question for you: \nWhat do Adlai Stevenson\, George McGovern\, Daniel Webster\, and Wendell Willkie have in common? \nEach of these talented\, admirable men ran for President and lost. \nAnd each was an outstanding person who might well have made a great President. \nIn this unique multimedia presentation\, I will share my list of the ten best men to run for President and lose.  I’ll offer fascinating glimpses into the men\, their times and the campaigns.  In addition to learning about the candidate himself\, we will explore why each man failed in his bid and do a bit of speculation on the different directions our country might have taken had the election been decided differently. \nConsider all the ways history might have changed if elections had gone differently. For instance\, how would America have responded on the morning of 9-11 if Al Gore had been elected  President? Can we guess in what ways World War II have been different if Wendell Willkie had been President on Pearl Harbor Day? We can speculate as to whether the Civil War have been fought if Stephen Douglas had beaten Abraham Lincoln?  It’s fun to think about and debate! \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates
\n  \n  \n  \n

Bell\, a brilliant and determined educator as well as an important inventor of devices beyond the telephone changed the future. The invention of the telephone revolutionized the way we communicate with one another. But could even the great Alexander Graham Bell himself anticipate that someday you might well be reading this on a phone? \nAlexander Graham Bell came from a distinguished family of educators who had dedicated themselves to helping the deaf. The recurring theme throughout Bell’s life was an attempt to open the world of sound to those who were hard of hearing. This included his wife.
