After writing one of the most popular and widely published newspaper columns in the USA\, he became the voice of the average infantry soldier during World War II. In this role\, Ernie Pyle became legendary. \nA number of brilliant journalists covered the Second World War. Edward R. Murrow broadcast brilliantly from the rooftops of London\, William L. Shirer personally witnessed the entry of Hitler into Austria\, and Walter Cronkite tirelessly covered the War for the United Press. Each filed memorable reports that helped Americans better understand the War. \nMeanwhile\, Ernie Pyle carved out an unforgettable niche for himself. Instead of covering the “big picture” of the War\, Pyle traveled alongside the infantry. He became what we today would call an embedded journalist. Marching alongside the average G.I. Joe – a term he helped popularize – Ernie Pyle reported the “little picture.” He recorded the daily gripes and fears and small moments of humor encountered by the foot soldiers marching through Italy and then Germany. Millions of Americans read his column every day. His prose was crisp observant caring\, and sardonic. \nWhen the War ended in Europe\, Ernie Pyle returned home to New Mexico. Then\, reluctantly\, Pyle joined the forces preparing to invade Japan. He was exhausted\, his personal life was in shambles\, and he had a fearful premonition that he would die there. \nOn Okinawa\, Ernie Pyle was killed by a sniper. The grief felt by his millions of readers and the entire Army was all but immeasurable. Tributes flowed from the President\, American military leaders\, and journalists around the world. \nPerhaps the simple plaque erected by the soldiers who had marched alongside him would have been his favorite memorial. DESCRIPTION:The Life Of FDR\n \nUnderstanding the life of FDR is like taking a sonogram of the USA.  Franklin Roosevelt transformed the United States with optimism\, vigor\, vision\, and skill.  The effects are still being felt and still being debated today.  And he did it all from a wheelchair. \nOptimism was one of FDR’s greatest strengths and most incredible gifts.  He inspired others to be positive\, even during the darkest days of the Second World War and during the depths of the Great Depression. FDR was the first President since Lincoln to seek out the advice of African American advisors routinely. He was the first President to appoint a woman to the cabinet. Although FDR was unable to end the misery of the Great Depression\, his policies definitely helped relieve the suffering of many people.  Just as important\, he filled them with optimism. \nWhen the Second World War loomed\, he had the vision to appoint George C. Marshall to head our armed forces – and then worked tirelessly to make sure Marshall had everything he needed to secure victory in Africa\, Europe\, and Asia. \nWoody Guthrie wrote a song called “Dear Mrs. Roosevelt\,” which contained the lines: \n“I voted for him lots of times \nAnd I’d vote for him again!” \nThe life of FDR is not without blemish. He was unfaithful to his wife and capable of being duplicitous.  His treatment of Japanese Americans is very controversial.  So is his reaction to the Holocaust.  All of his complexities and accomplishments will come to life in this non-partisan multimedia presentation. We will explore his family history\, his marriage\, his faith and all the forces that shaped the mind of one of the great Americans. \n

In 1860\, our nation faced one of the most crucial elections in our history.  Four great candidates stood for office.  The only real issue was slavery. \nToday\, we see the practice of kidnapping human beings and holding them against their will as abhorrent.  In 1860\, the economy and social structure of an entire region of the United States were built on the premise that kidnapping and bondage were acceptable means of making money.  Our four-week series begins with an in-depth look at the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858\, the election of 1860\, and the secession of the Confederate States. In 1861\, the Civil War really began.  We saw American citizens in revolt against the Constitution while holding millions of people against their will.  We saw personal tragedies unfold as the tender-hearted Abraham Lincoln saw the body of the first American patriot killed by the rebels brought back to Washington\, DC.  It was Elmer Ellsworth.  He was a close friend of Lincoln’s. The death of Elmer Ellsworth represents the personal nature of this deadly fight. People happily brought picnic baskets to watch the First Battle Of Bull Run unfold.  By the end of the battle\, America knew war was not glamorous and victory would be difficult. We will explore how\, in 1861\, the Civil War began a great test of America’s moral purpose\, military strength\, and future direction. Today the battlefields of the Civil War are quiet. \nThe Battlefield at Bull Run \nWe will see how they were the sites of the greatest struggle in American history.
