SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION:Who were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody really knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse.  However\, the role of the First Lady was not given so much as a moment’s thought by the Founding Fathers.  The title “First Lady” itself was not even widely used until the 1850s!  Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent a fantastic array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nI will list my top ten favorite First Ladies in this original series.  I promise that at least a couple of my choices will be women you would have never considered! \nOf course\, you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt.  But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better every day in fundamental ways by the legacy of First Lady Harriet Lane?  Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy\, we had a younger First Lady who became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children?  (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation!  It is not merely a collection of trivia.  Instead\, we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of the marvelous Martha Washington\, an enslaver\, to the modern Michelle Obama\, the descendant of enslaved people! \nREGISTRATION – this event is live and in person.  The Northbrook Senior Center hosts it\, and there is a charge for attending.  Registration is required. \n  \n

SUMMARY:1923 - America One Hundred Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:The Roaring Twenties were going full blast\, and jazz filled the air. We were past a World War and a pandemic. Stocks and hemlines were going up. Warner Brothers\, King Tut’s tomb\, and Old Yankee Stadium were opened. 1923 seemed like an idyllic year. But\, below the surface\, storm clouds were gathering. Hitler led the Nazi Party in a failed coup attempt in Germany. The President\, Warren Harding\, embroiled in scandals\, died suddenly and mysteriously. \nJoin us as our time capsule lands in 1922. We will look at America as it looked 100 years ago. Among our topics: \n√ Who were the famous people who were born and died in 1922? (We lost President Harding and Pancho Villa but gained Henry Kissinger and Peter Lawford!). \n√ What were the most important inventions of 1923 (Water skis\, anyone?) \n√ What were the most important news stories of 1923?  \n√  How much did everyday items cost? \n√ What music\, movies\, and performers were popular? \nAll of this and so much more as you join us for a 1922 time capsule program!!! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free; I am struggling but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O.
