SUMMARY:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates
DESCRIPTION:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates\nWhat do Adlai Stevenson\, George McGovern\, Daniel Webster\, and Wendell Willkie have in common? \nEach ran for President and lost. In some cases\, more than once! \nAnd each was an outstanding man who might well have made a great President. \nIn this unique multimedia presentation\, I will share my list of the ten best men to run for President and lose.  I’ll offer fascinating glimpses into the men\, the times\, and the campaigns. \nWe will explore why each man failed in his bid and speculate on the different directions our country might have taken had the election been decided differently.  For instance\, how would America have responded on the morning of 9-11 if Al Gore had been President? Or if Wendell Willkie had been President on Pearl Harbor Day?  It’s fun to think about and debate! \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics (Part II)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE:. \nFilms will be presented chronologically. \nPolitics and the movies are a match made in heaven! Movies need compelling characters\, suspenseful plots\, unexpected twists\, and a great conclusion. Politics provides all the above and then some! In this remarkable new presentation\, Best Movies About Politics\, I’ll present my admittedly idiosyncratic list of the best films ever made about American politics. Some are dramas\, and some are comedies. Some are old classics\, and some are very modern. Some are well-known\, critically acclaimed Hollywood films\, and others are excellent but obscure! \nBest Movies About Politics\nThis fun\, fascinating\, and fast-moving presentation is one of my favorites\, combining my love of great cinema with a lifelong fascination with elections. And where else will you find a list that plausibly contains Henry Fonda\, Eddie Murphy\, Kirk Douglas\, George Clooney\, and Jimmy Stewart? From directors Frank Capra and Preston Sturges to Rob Reiner and screenwriters Aaron Sorkin to Rod Serling\, some of the most incredible talent in movie history have tackled the subject of elections in films that are entertaining\, thought-provoking\, and often unforgettable. We will look at clips from some of them and consider others! \nOf course\, we will leave time for discussion and your choices. Let’s see what everyone else chooses as the best movies about politics! \n  \n

SUMMARY:First Look: The Election Of 2024
DESCRIPTION:It is 100 days before the election! \nIn this exciting and all-new presentation\, I will break down the electoral strategies of the Harris and the Trump campaigns\, showing you which states are in play\, what factors will be important in the final vote\, and answering all your questions. \nWe will also look at the crucial battle for the US Senate\, highlighting each of the states in play. With Republicans sure to pick up one seat in West Virginia\, all the GOP would need to get control of the Senate would be one more seat. Can the Democrats hold them off? SUMMARY:America's Purpose Statement: The Declaration Of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The most important sentence ever written by an American – a sentence that has inspired people in every part of the world – is found in America’s purpose statement! Click here to read more. The legacy of Washington\, Hancock\, Franklin\, Jefferson\, Adams\, Hamilton\, and Paul Revere still challenges us. \n \nOn a stifling July Thursday in 1776\, our Founding Fathers agreed to a completely unique document in the world’s history. Many revolutions had occurred over the centuries\, but never had one begun with a philosophical purpose statement. \nAlthough the Declaration of Independence has no legal power\, it has become the guiding beacon for what America strives to become. As the events of 2020 showed\, we as a nation are a world leader in human rights\, yet America is still a work in progress. \n \nWhy study the Declaration of Independence? It is the ultimate statement of what we hope to become. Freedom movements in the USA and worldwide have quoted it. \nYet many Americans know surprisingly little about it. In this exciting and thought-provoking multimedia presentation\, I will present the thrilling themes\, difficult negotiations\, contradictory\, complex\, charismatic personalities\, and exciting events leading to the most critical moment in American history. \n\n

SUMMARY:Richard Nixon (Part Two - PM)
DESCRIPTION:Richard Nixon is one of the most fascinating\, contradictory\, and enigmatic men ever to be president. \nParts of the Richard Nixon story are admirable and exciting. An aspect of Nixon’s background that should not be overlooked is his lifting himself up from a difficult upbringing to becoming a superb student. Despite his challenging roots\, he quickly established himself as a political power as a congressman and then a United States senator from California. \nThe rest of the Richard Nixon story is a study in contrasts. Every time Nixon accomplished something extraordinary\, his own poor judgment or lack of restraint led him to embarrassment and\, ultimately\, disgrace. \nIn this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will examine Richard Nixon’s biography. You’ll learn much more about this intriguing man. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:History Vs. The Movies - Watergate Part One
DESCRIPTION:History Vs. The Movies: Watergate \n  \nWatergate \nWatergate was the largest and most frightening presidential scandal. In this two-part multimedia presentation\, we will look at the roots of the crime and the desperate attempts of the Nixon Administration to cover it up\, all of which were unraveled by journalists\, a judge\, and Congress. We will examine the role of Woodward and Bernstein\, as told in two films\, in the efforts to uncover the truth. (Part One: Crime And Coverup. Part Two: Investigation and Aftermath.) \nThe worst Presidential scandal of all time is a tale of vanity and venality\, hubris and pettiness. The discovery of the so-called “third-rate burglary” unraveled a conspiracy of immense proportions to subvert the American Constitution. In this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will see how the nation faced and survived its worst Constitutional crisis.

SUMMARY:The Mysterious Life Of Lee Harvey Oswald
DESCRIPTION:Lee Harvey Oswald was only 24 years when he was killed.  But his 24 years of life are as mysterious and controversial as the life of any 24-year-old ever! \n \nSo who was he? Was Lee Harvey Oswald a “semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur” (in the words of Stephen King) or a super smart\, highly trained CIA assassin\, or a Mafia hit man or simply a “patsy” who somehow didn’t know what he was doing? \nHis life had been such a failure that the few official documents about him are testaments to his existence as a loser. School report cards that indicate his unwillingness to comply with rules and his inability to stop committing acts of violence.  A string of firings from menial jobs.  Wife abuse.  Forced psychiatric care.  A wobbly military record. \nAnd then came 11/22/63. \n \nIn this absolutely riveting multimedia presentation we will use the actual documented record of Oswald’s life to help build a clear picture of a muddied man. \n

SUMMARY:The Swinging\, Controversial Life Of Frank Sinatra - Part Two
DESCRIPTION:Frank Sinatra was one of the most charismatic and controversial American entertainers of all time. \nHe was one of a kind!  \nClick here to read about his amazing record on Civil Rights. \nIn this brand-new multimedia presentation\, I will trace the biography of Sinatra’s improbable life. We will look at his odd childhood as a skinny Italian street kid in working-class Hoboken\, New Jersey. His father was a prizefighter turned saloon keeper; his mother was a hard-drinking suffragette and political power in Hoboken who also made a living by performing abortions. We will look at Sinatra’s bumpy road to stardom. His career had so many ups and downs! Frank Sinatra seemed unstoppable from singing with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey big bands to being the idol of the Bobby Sox brigades in the early 1940s. But when he avoided serving in World War II and musical tastes began to shift\, his career went into a steep decline that was only rescued by the help of the Mafia and his amazing performance in the movie “From Here To Eternity.” \n \nThe rest of the story is equally fascinating. It includes Swingin’ Sinatra\, the Rat Pack\, JFK\, Marilyn Monroe\, and civil rights. So are Lucky Luciano\, Sam Giancana\, Skinny D’Amato\, Jilly Rizzo\, and the Mafia. (Click here to read about how Peter Lawford connected Sinatra to JFK!)In this one-of-a-kind presentation filled with video clips\, amazing anecdotes\, and insightful analysis\, we will look at all sides of the one and only Chairman of the Board\, Frank Sinatra. \n

SUMMARY:Harding And Coolidge - Republican Presidents Of The 1920s
DESCRIPTION:After  World War I ended\, America turned away from the liberal progressive era of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and made a sharp turn toward conservatism. In 1920\, the Republicans nominated for president Warren G Harding\, an amiable Sen. from Ohio who promised “A return to normalcy.” For eight years\, the Republicans controlled the presidency\, Congress\, and the national debate. Within twelve fascinating years\, the economy had gone from boom to bust\, and the “Roaring Twenties” had given way to the Great Depression. The seemingly perennial GOP majority evaporated with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt. \nWho were the Republican presidents whose pro-business\, low-tax\, conservative presidencies led to an explosion and then the demolition of the American economy? They were very dissimilar in their backgrounds\, each with a fascinating back story that you will learn about in this unique multimedia presentation. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world.  We are the only nation to have landed a man on the moon\, and our research universities are the envy of the world.  But in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election.  Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the 2000 election was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime!  At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation shows how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call.  We will examine what happens when both the political and judicial systems cannot resolve the result in a way that inspires confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long-range results of the elections.  The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation.  George W. Bush’s victory in the 2000 election ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \n  \n

SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION:Who were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody really knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse.  However\, the role of the First Lady was not given so much as a moment’s thought by the Founding Fathers.  The title “First Lady” itself was not even widely used until the 1850s!  Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent a fantastic array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nI will list my top ten favorite First Ladies in this original series.  I promise that at least a couple of my choices will be women you would have never considered! \nOf course\, you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt.  But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better every day in fundamental ways by the legacy of First Lady Harriet Lane?  Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy\, we had a younger First Lady who became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children?  (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation!  It is not merely a collection of trivia.  Instead\, we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of the marvelous Martha Washington\, an enslaver\, to the modern Michelle Obama\, the descendant of enslaved people! \nREGISTRATION—This event is live and in person. The Lincolnwood Library hosts it\, and there is no charge for attending. Registration is required. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER!\n  \n
