SUMMARY:1950 - Life In America 75 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Journey to 1950\, a defining year of post-war America\, when optimism soared and new challenges emerged. The Baby Boom was reshaping family life\, and suburban living became the American ideal. Television became the centerpiece of entertainment\, with early shows like I Love Lucy laying the groundwork for modern TV culture. Meanwhile\, the Cold War began to take hold\, with the Korean War marking the first major military conflict of the era. \n1950 wasn’t just about politics and economics—it was a year of rich cultural milestones. The movie Sunset Boulevard captivated audiences with its sharp critique of Hollywood’s Golden Age\, and Ella Fitzgerald’s smooth vocals dominated the airwaves. In sports\, the New York Yankees won another World Series\, while consumer goods like frozen dinners and color televisions symbolized the growing comfort of middle-class American homes. The Tonight Show\, Bill Murray\, and Morgan Fairchild were born in the same year that George Bernard Shaw and George Orwell died. \nThis program offers a vibrant look at a year of optimism and tension\, filled with fascinating stories\, visuals\, and multimedia elements. Whether you remember 1950 or are curious to learn about it\, this engaging presentation will transport you back to a time of hope\, change\, and cultural growth. SUMMARY:1925: Life in America 100 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Step back to 1925\, the heart of the Roaring Twenties\, when jazz ruled the airwaves\, flappers danced the Charleston\, and speakeasies thrived under Prohibition. This was a year of cultural transformation\, as F. Scott Fitzgerald published The Great Gatsby\, revealing the glitz and pitfalls of the American Dream\, while  Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington brought jazz into the mainstream. On the political front\, Calvin Coolidge presided over a booming economy\, and innovation flourished with inventions like the first mechanical television. \n1925 was also a year of contrasts. While the Scopes Monkey Trial sparked a national debate on science versus religion\, the Harlem Renaissance was in full swing\, reshaping literature and the arts. In entertainment\, silent film stars like Charlie Chaplin\, Rudolph Valentino\, and Buster Keaton captivated audiences\, while the first New Yorker magazine hit newsstands\, offering a new perspective on culture and humor. Consumer prices\, such as 54 cents for a gallon of gas\, highlight the economic reality of the time. Dick Van Dyke\, Malcolm X\, Johnny Carson\, and Robert F Kennedy were all born during the amazing year of 1925. \nThis fast-moving multimedia program brings 1925 vividly to life with visuals\, music\, and storytelling. Perfect for history buffs and culture enthusiasts\, this presentation will immerse you in the dazzling highs and defining struggles of a year that forever shaped America. Sign up now and take a journey back to a time of innovation\, contradiction\, and unforgettable style. \n================================================== \n\n

SUMMARY:Looking Back - Looking Ahead - 2024 in Review/Predictions for 2025
DESCRIPTION:This is\, without question\, my most eagerly awaited program of the year returns! Last year\, this program sold out at every venue – so reserve your seats early! \nPerhaps it’s just the era we are in\, but this year seemed to be one of the most extraordinary of our lifetimes. We saw a significant war involving Israel\, the former president of the United States of America being found responsible for sexual assault and for fraud in separate courts while facing significant criminal charges in several venues\, the House of Representatives in utter chaos\, Chicago sports teams collapsing\, a major crisis of migrants at the southern border and in Chicago\, and a wild presidential election awaiting us. \nIn early December of each year\, I present a look back at the year coming to a close. I will list: \n√ Top Ten News Stories of 2024 \n√ Top Ten Quotes of 2024 \n√ Top Ten New Words of 2024 \n√ Important Deaths of 2024 \nPREDICTIONS!\nAnd then comes the part everyone enjoys – I will make ten specific predictions for 2024! Will Donald Trump be sent to prison? Will a solution be found for the migrant crisis or for inflation? What new breakthroughs will science and technology offer us in the coming year? \nAnd just so you can keep me honest\, I will show you precisely what I predicted for 2024. We will assess how correct – or not – I was in my predictions for this year!! \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Looking Back - Looking Ahead - 2024 in Review/Predictions for 2025 (Tuesday PM)
DESCRIPTION:  \n“Looking Back/Looking Ahead” is\, without question\, my most eagerly awaited program of the year returns! Last year\, this program sold out at every venue – so reserve your seats early! \nPerhaps it’s just our era\, but this year seemed to be one of the most extraordinary of our lifetimes. We saw a significant war involving Israel; the former president of the United States of America was found responsible for sexual assault and fraud in separate courts while facing significant criminal charges in several venues\, the House of Representatives in utter chaos\, Chicago sports teams collapsing\, a major crisis of migrants at the southern border and in Chicago\, and a wild presidential election awaiting us. \nIn early December of each year\, I present a look back at the year coming to a close. I will list: \n√ Top Ten News Stories of 2024 \n√ Top Ten Quotes of 2024 \n√ Top Ten New Words of 2024 \n√ Important Deaths of 2024 \nPREDICTIONS!\nAnd then comes the part that everybody enjoys! I will make specific predictions for 2025. What will happen when President Trump begins the mass round-up and deportation of illegal immigrants? Will he be successful in amending the constitution to end birthright citizenship? How will Americans respond to much higher consumer prices when he adds a 25% terrify imported goods? I’ll tell you my predictions for how the Chicago sports teams will do\, who will win the Oscars and the Tonys\, and so much more. \nAnd just so you can keep me honest\, I will show you precisely what I predicted for 2024. Did I get the election right? We will assess how correct – or not – I was in my predictions for this year!! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, email me\, and I will waive your fee. You only have to request the waiver once; it will automatically cover you for all future programs. I am struggling but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. Box #177 \nDeerfield\, IL 60015 \nPlease put Year in the subject line. \nPaypal: \nPayPal (Please note\, PayPal takes 10% of your donation as a fee. Before the West Coast results come in\, we will offer a characterization of the race. The networks can’t call an election before they have firm vote totals. SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world.  We are the only nation to have landed a man on the moon\, and our research universities are the envy of the world.  But in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election.  Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the 2000 election was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime!  At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation shows how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call.  We will examine what happens when both the political and judicial systems cannot resolve the result in a way that inspires confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long-range results of the elections.  The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation.  George W. Bush’s victory in the 2000 election ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Life Of FDR - A Multimedia Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The Life Of FDR\n \nUnderstanding the life of FDR is like taking a sonogram of the USA.  Franklin Roosevelt transformed the United States with optimism\, vigor\, vision\, and skill.  The effects are still being felt and still being debated today.  And he did it all from a wheelchair. \nOptimism was one of FDR’s greatest strengths and most incredible gifts.  He inspired others to be positive\, even during the darkest days of the Second World War and during the depths of the Great Depression. FDR was the first President since Lincoln to seek out the advice of African American advisors routinely. He was the first President to appoint a woman to the cabinet. Although FDR was unable to end the misery of the Great Depression\, his policies definitely helped relieve the suffering of many people.  Just as important\, he filled them with optimism. \nWhen the Second World War loomed\, he had the vision to appoint George C. Marshall to head our armed forces – and then worked tirelessly to make sure Marshall had everything he needed to secure victory in Africa\, Europe\, and Asia. \nWoody Guthrie wrote a song called “Dear Mrs. Roosevelt\,” which contained the lines: \n“I voted for him lots of times \nAnd I’d vote for him again!” \nThe life of FDR is not without blemish. He was unfaithful to his wife and capable of being duplicitous.  His treatment of Japanese Americans is very controversial.  So is his reaction to the Holocaust.  All of his complexities and accomplishments will come to life in this non-partisan multimedia presentation. We will explore his family history\, his marriage\, his faith and all the forces that shaped the mind of one of the great Americans. \n

SUMMARY:Women Who Have Run For President
DESCRIPTION:What do Victoria Woodhull\, Gracie Allen\, Margaret Chase Smith\, Hillary Clinton\, and Kamala Harris have in common? \nThey are among the many amazing\, completely fascinating women who have run for President!  We now see that the election of a woman as President is not a matter of ‘if’—it is simply a matter of ‘when’ and who! \nWhen an unprecedented number of serious female candidates ran for the Democratic nomination in 2020 and Republican Nikki Haley made a strong run for the GOP nod in 2024\, this topic took on even greater urgency! \nIn this unique\, fast-moving\, and thought-provoking presentation\, national award-winning public speaker and historian Barry Bradford will share the fascinating stories of the women who blazed the way for a sea change in the political process.  It won’t be Hillary Clinton\, Elizabeth Warren\, or Sarah Palin\, but included in the presentation will be a prediction of who will be the first woman to be elected President!  It may happen as soon as the Election of 2028! \n

SUMMARY:Understanding The Election Of 2008
DESCRIPTION:Understanding The Election Of 2008\nIf the election of 2008 had been written as a movie script\, it could not have been more exciting. We faced the possibility that we would elect the first woman to the presidency\, the first African-American to the presidency\, or perhaps one of America’s greatest war heroes to the presidency. The nomination battles were thrilling\, the personalities were oversized\, and just when it couldn’t seem to get any more fascinating\, Sen. John McCain chose obscure Alaska  Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate! \nIn this insightful\, nonpartisan multimedia presentation\, you will learn about the backgrounds of each of the campaigns and candidates in the election of 2008. You’ll learn the very different election strategies that each pursued. We will look at the role of technology\, social media\, race\, television\, and the debates as factors in deciding an election like no other. The election of 2008 provides us a fascinating glimpse into the future of campaigning.   \nWe’ll see how social media and voter tracking began to replace conventional television advertising as a means of motivating voters.  This effort led to long lines of voters across the country. We’ll also examine how one party began to utilize restrictive voting laws as a desperate means to try and ensure victory through voter suppression. \nThe career politician and war hero against a candidate with a painfully thin resume; a vice-presidential candidate with a penchant for gaffes versus one seemingly in way over her head.  This presentation on the election of 2008 is not to be missed. \n

SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: \nI am presenting a shortened version of this at several locations. This one is different because it will be in two parts and much more comprehensive. \nFilms will be presented chronologically. \nPolitics and the movies are a match made in heaven! Movies need compelling characters\, suspenseful plots\, unexpected twists\, and a great conclusion. Politics provides all the above and then some! In this remarkable new presentation\, Best Movies About Politics\, I’ll present my admittedly idiosyncratic list of the best films ever made about American politics. Some are dramas\, and some are comedies. Some are old classics\, and some are very modern. Some are well-known\, critically acclaimed Hollywood films\, and others are excellent but obscure! \nBest Movies About Politics\nThis fun\, fascinating\, and fast-moving presentation is one of my favorites\, combining my love of great cinema with a lifelong fascination with elections. And where else will you find a list that plausibly contains Henry Fonda\, Eddie Murphy\, Kirk Douglas\, George Clooney\, and Jimmy Stewart? From directors Frank Capra and Preston Sturges to Rob Reiner and screenwriters Aaron Sorkin to Rod Serling\, some of the most incredible talent in movie history have tackled the subject of elections in films that are entertaining\, thought-provoking\, and often unforgettable. We will look at clips from some of them and consider others! \nOf course\, we will leave time for discussion and your choices.
