SUMMARY:Looking Back - Looking Ahead - 2024 in Review/Predictions for 2025 (Monday AM)
DESCRIPTION:  \n“Looking Back/Looking Ahead” is\, without question\, my most eagerly awaited program of the year returns! Last year\, this program sold out at every venue – so reserve your seats early! \nPerhaps it’s just our era\, but this year seemed to be one of the most extraordinary of our lifetimes. We saw a significant war involving Israel; the former president of the United States of America was found responsible for sexual assault and fraud in separate courts while facing significant criminal charges in several venues\, the House of Representatives was in utter chaos\, Chicago sports teams collapsing\, a major crisis of migrants at the southern border and in Chicago\, and a wild presidential election awaiting us. \nIn early December of each year\, I present a look back at the year coming to a close. I will list: \n√ Top Ten News Stories of 2024 \n√ Top Ten Quotes of 2024 \n√ Top Ten New Words of 2024 \n√ Important Deaths of 2024 \n\nPREDICTIONS!\nAnd then comes the part that everybody enjoys! I will make specific predictions for 2025. What will happen when President Trump begins the mass round-up and deportation of illegal immigrants? Will he be successful in amending the constitution to end birthright citizenship? How will Americans respond to much higher consumer prices when he adds a 25% tariff to imported goods? I’ll tell you my predictions for how the Chicago sports teams will do\, who will win the Oscars and the Tonys\, and so much more. \nAnd just so you can keep me honest\, I will show you precisely what I predicted for 2024. Did I get the election right? We will assess how correct – or not – I was in my predictions for this year!! \nAnd just so you can keep me honest\, I will show you precisely what I predicted for 2024. We will assess how correct – or not – I was in my predictions for this year!! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, email me\, and I will waive your fee. You only have to request the waiver once; it will automatically cover you for all future programs. I am struggling but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. Box #177 \nDeerfield\, IL 60015 \nPlease put LBLA in the subject line. \nPaypal: \nPayPal (Please note\, PayPal takes 10% of your donation as a fee. I receive $4.50) \n[wp_paypal button=”donate” name=”LBLA”] \n√ Venmo  \n(send to @B-Bradford-1) Please add a note saying ‘LBLA’ \n√  Zelle – Use the email address Barry1776@ATT.NET (Please add a note that it is for LBLA) \n√ Don’t pay (or pay less) if you cannot afford it! Email me for a waiver if you are not able to pay. \nREGISTRATION LINK\nNO ZOOM LINK??  \nIf you do not receive a confirmation email\, you did not sign up correctly. SAVE THE CONFIRMATION EMAIL! SUMMARY:Election Day Party
DESCRIPTION:  \nOur incredible learning community is going to have a (virtual) Election Day Party!  Republican or Democrat\, liberal or conservative\, all are welcome!  We will meet three times during the day so that I can give you the latest exit poll results\, information about voter turnout\, and updated prediction maps.  Between 5 and 6 pm\, we will have an open forum where you can ask any question of political scientist Kelly Jones-Wagy and me\, share your opinions\, and learn about the races.  Of course\, you do not need to join us for every session – join us to celebrate democracy\, even in an odd year!  This will be our celebration of learning\, friendship\, and democracy! \nVirtual Election Day Party: Tentative schedule: (All Times Central) \n11:30 -12:00 I’ll have lots of information about voter turnout and trends.! \n5:00 – 6:00 An hour-long open forum with elections expert and award-winning political scientist Kelly Jones-Wagy and me.  Before we start getting the first vote totals\, this is your chance to ask about any candidate\, race\, procedure\, or state- and we will answer live!  As time permits\, an open discussion where you can share your views and opinions will be available. \n9:30 —We should have significant results from the East. Before the West Coast results come in\, we will offer a characterization of the race. The networks can’t call an election before they have firm vote totals. However\, we will be able to see where the outstanding votes are in many of the states and will begin to tell you what the network can’t. \n12:45—We will have a great sense of the next President\, although the race may not yet have been called!  I will likely call it! \n  \nQuite obviously\, I am investing a lot of time and effort into preparing for this event\, conducting almost a dozen interviews with college professors and reporters from around the country to be able to talk intelligently about every racenfrom across the nation.  I will then be working hard all day and through the night. \nCOST \nAs a result\, I ask for a voluntary donation of between $10 and $25.00. \nI hope to create a memorable experience for us all!  Since I support a family\, I understand with compassion living on a tight budget!  If you can’t afford the program\, but really want to participate\, just come without paying. SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world.  We are the only nation to have landed a man on the moon\, and our research universities are the envy of the world.  But in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election.  Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the 2000 election was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime!  At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation shows how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call.  We will examine what happens when both the political and judicial systems cannot resolve the result in a way that inspires confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long-range results of the elections.  The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation.  George W. Bush’s victory in the 2000 election ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Life Of FDR - A Multimedia Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The Life Of FDR\n \nUnderstanding the life of FDR is like taking a sonogram of the USA.  Franklin Roosevelt transformed the United States with optimism\, vigor\, vision\, and skill.  The effects are still being felt and still being debated today.  And he did it all from a wheelchair. \nOptimism was one of FDR’s greatest strengths and most incredible gifts.  He inspired others to be positive\, even during the darkest days of the Second World War and during the depths of the Great Depression. FDR was the first President since Lincoln to seek out the advice of African American advisors routinely. He was the first President to appoint a woman to the cabinet. Although FDR was unable to end the misery of the Great Depression\, his policies definitely helped relieve the suffering of many people.  Just as important\, he filled them with optimism. \nWhen the Second World War loomed\, he had the vision to appoint George C. Marshall to head our armed forces – and then worked tirelessly to make sure Marshall had everything he needed to secure victory in Africa\, Europe\, and Asia. \nWoody Guthrie wrote a song called “Dear Mrs. Roosevelt\,” which contained the lines: \n“I voted for him lots of times \nAnd I’d vote for him again!” \nThe life of FDR is not without blemish. He was unfaithful to his wife and capable of being duplicitous.  His treatment of Japanese Americans is very controversial.  So is his reaction to the Holocaust.  All of his complexities and accomplishments will come to life in this non-partisan multimedia presentation. We will explore his family history\, his marriage\, his faith and all the forces that shaped the mind of one of the great Americans. \n

SUMMARY:Understanding The Election Of 2008
DESCRIPTION:Understanding The Election Of 2008\nIf the election of 2008 had been written as a movie script\, it could not have been more exciting. We faced the possibility that we would elect the first woman to the presidency\, the first African-American to the presidency\, or perhaps one of America’s greatest war heroes to the presidency. The nomination battles were thrilling\, the personalities were oversized\, and just when it couldn’t seem to get any more fascinating\, Sen. John McCain chose obscure Alaska  Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate! \nIn this insightful\, nonpartisan multimedia presentation\, you will learn about the backgrounds of each of the campaigns and candidates in the election of 2008. You’ll learn the very different election strategies that each pursued. We will look at the role of technology\, social media\, race\, television\, and the debates as factors in deciding an election like no other. The election of 2008 provides us a fascinating glimpse into the future of campaigning.   \nWe’ll see how social media and voter tracking began to replace conventional television advertising as a means of motivating voters.  This effort led to long lines of voters across the country. We’ll also examine how one party began to utilize restrictive voting laws as a desperate means to try and ensure victory through voter suppression. \nThe career politician and war hero against a candidate with a painfully thin resume; a vice-presidential candidate with a penchant for gaffes versus one seemingly in way over her head.  This presentation on the election of 2008 is not to be missed. \n

SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world. We are the only nation to land a man on the moon. Our research universities are the envy of the world. And in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election. Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the election of 2000 was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime! And the victory of George W. Bush in the election of 2000 ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \nREGISTRATION! \nThis event is live and in person! Registration is required\, and there is a fee to attend. Please contact the nice sponsors\, and they will be glad to help you! \n  \n

SUMMARY:The History Of Political Satire
DESCRIPTION:The History of Political Satire – From Mark Twin To Stephen Colbert \n“Politicians and diapers should both be changed regularly and for the same reason\,” \nor so said America’s first great political satirist\, Mark Twain.  Although the history of political satire in America begins with Twain\, we will trace its rambunctious history in this wonderful multimedia presentation \nBeginning with Mark Twain\, this funny and thought-provoking multimedia presentation will trace the rise of political satire by looking at some of its greatest practitioners\, including Will Rogers\, Mort Sahl\, Dennis Miller\, and Stephen Colbert. \nAlthough Mark Twain and Will  Rogers began the art form of political satire as public entertainment\, the history of political satire shows that it has moved from a novelty to a staple of show business. \nWith the rise of television in the 1950s\, political satire became a vastly amusing and important part of the discussion about government and elections.  Mort Sahl’s controversial monologues eventually led to the Smothers Brothers\, Saturday Night Live\, and The Daily Show. \nWith the proliferation of cable TV and late-night talk/comedy shows\, you can barely escape political comedy if you try! \nJoin us for many insights\, some fantastic history\, and hilarious film clips as we trace the history of political satire in the USA! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics
DESCRIPTION:Politics and the movies are a match made in heaven! Movies need compelling characters\, suspenseful plots\, unexpected twists\, and a  great conclusion. Politics provides all the above and then some! In this remarkable new presentation\, Best Movies About Politics\, I’ll present my admittedly idiosyncratic list of the best films ever made about American politics. Some are dramas\, and some are comedies. Some are old classics\, and some are very modern. Some are well-known\, critically acclaimed Hollywood films\, and others are amazing but obscure! \nBest Movies About Politics\nThis fun\, fascinating\, and fast-moving presentation is one of my favorites\, combining my love of great cinema with a lifelong fascination with elections. And where else will you find a list that plausibly contains Henry Fonda\, Eddie Murphy\, Kirk Douglas\, George Clooney\, and Jimmy Stewart? From directors Frank Capra and Preston Sturges to Rob Reiner and screenwriters Aaron Sorkin to Rod Serling\, some of the most incredible talent in movie history have tackled the subject of elections in films that are entertaining\, thought-provoking\, and often unforgettable. We will look at clips from some of them and consider others! \nOf course\, we will leave time for discussion and your choices. Let’s see what everyone else chooses as the best movies about politics! \nBONUS! \nClick here to read about one of the films – I’ll bet this is a new one for you! \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Civil War Stories - Reflections On Amercia's Deadliest War
DESCRIPTION:1860 & 1861 The Civil War At 150\nA Nation Divided – 1860 1861 The Civil War \nThe Declaration Of Independence boldly stated “We hold these truths to be self evident\, that all men are created equal…” The Civil War tested whether or not we really meant it. In 1860\, our nation faced one of the most crucial elections in our history.  Four great candidates stood for office.  The only real issue was slavery. \nToday\, we see the practice of kidnapping human beings and holding them against their will as abhorrent.  In 1860\, the economy and social structure of an entire region of the United States were built on the premise that kidnapping and bondage were acceptable means of making money.  Our four-week series begins with an in-depth look at the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858\, the election of 1860\, and the secession of the Confederate States. In 1861\, the Civil War really began.  We saw American citizens in revolt against the Constitution while holding millions of people against their will.  We saw personal tragedies unfold as the tender-hearted Abraham Lincoln saw the body of the first American patriot killed by the rebels brought back to Washington\, DC.  It was Elmer Ellsworth.  He was a close friend of Lincoln’s. The death of Elmer Ellsworth represents the personal nature of this deadly fight. People happily brought picnic baskets to watch the First Battle Of Bull Run unfold.  By the end of the battle\, America knew war was not glamorous and victory would be difficult. We will explore how\, in 1861\, the Civil War began a great test of America’s moral purpose\, military strength\, and future direction. Today the battlefields of the Civil War are quiet. \nThe Battlefield at Bull Run \nWe will see how they were the sites of the greatest struggle in American history.
