SUMMARY:2024 Election Preview
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Presidential election is shaping up to be one of the most unusual and consequential in American history. With Vice President Kamala Harris aiming to become the first woman ever elected to the presidency and former President Donald Trump vying for a return to power\, this election will determine the future of America on critical issues such as the economy\, immigration\, climate change\, the Supreme Court\, reproductive rights\, gun safety laws\, and the very future of American democracy. \nControl of the Senate and House is also on the line\, with both expected to be closely contested. The outcome could potentially reshape the nation’s direction for years to come. \nJoin us for an exciting\, up-to-the-minute\, state-by-state analysis of the paths to victory available to both candidates and parties in this high-stakes election. \nOur good friends at the Northbrook Public Library made this FREE\, live\, in-person presentation possible. It will be an abbreviated version of the more comprehensive and up-to-date presentation happening on Zoom Monday night. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:2024 Election Preview
DESCRIPTION:The upcoming Presidential election of 2024 promises to be one of the most unusual and consequential in American history. With a biracial woman\, Vice-President Kamala Harris\, running against elderly former President Trump\, who faces trial in numerous jurisdictions and serious accusations of undermining our democracy\, this election promises to be one of the most consequential in American history. \nIf the Republicans win the Presidency\, many have vowed to pardon former President Trump\, ban abortions\, and appoint a Supreme Court that will support their agenda on guns\, abortion\, and voting restrictions. With control of the Senate and House expected to be closely contested\, this election may drastically alter the contours of American norms. \nThis presentation is live and on Zoom. It is an abbreviated version of the more comprehensive and up-to-date presentation on Zoom on Monday night.

SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world.  We are the only nation to have landed a man on the moon\, and our research universities are the envy of the world.  But in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election.  Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the 2000 election was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime!  At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation shows how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call.  We will examine what happens when both the political and judicial systems cannot resolve the result in a way that inspires confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long-range results of the elections.  The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation.  George W. Bush’s victory in the 2000 election ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Life Of FDR - A Multimedia Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The Life Of FDR\n \nUnderstanding the life of FDR is like taking a sonogram of the USA.  Franklin Roosevelt transformed the United States with optimism\, vigor\, vision\, and skill.  The effects are still being felt and still being debated today.  And he did it all from a wheelchair. \nOptimism was one of FDR’s greatest strengths and most incredible gifts.  He inspired others to be positive\, even during the darkest days of the Second World War and during the depths of the Great Depression. FDR was the first President since Lincoln to seek out the advice of African American advisors routinely. He was the first President to appoint a woman to the cabinet. Although FDR was unable to end the misery of the Great Depression\, his policies definitely helped relieve the suffering of many people.  Just as important\, he filled them with optimism. \nWhen the Second World War loomed\, he had the vision to appoint George C. Marshall to head our armed forces – and then worked tirelessly to make sure Marshall had everything he needed to secure victory in Africa\, Europe\, and Asia. \nWoody Guthrie wrote a song called “Dear Mrs. Roosevelt\,” which contained the lines: \n“I voted for him lots of times \nAnd I’d vote for him again!” \nThe life of FDR is not without blemish. He was unfaithful to his wife and capable of being duplicitous.  His treatment of Japanese Americans is very controversial.  So is his reaction to the Holocaust.  All of his complexities and accomplishments will come to life in this non-partisan multimedia presentation. We will explore his family history\, his marriage\, his faith and all the forces that shaped the mind of one of the great Americans. \n

SUMMARY:Women Who Have Run For President
DESCRIPTION:What do Victoria Woodhull\, Gracie Allen\, Margaret Chase Smith\, Hillary Clinton\, and Kamala Harris have in common? \nThey are among the many amazing\, completely fascinating women who have run for President!  We now see that the election of a woman as President is not a matter of ‘if’—it is simply a matter of ‘when’ and who! \nWhen an unprecedented number of serious female candidates ran for the Democratic nomination in 2020 and Republican Nikki Haley made a strong run for the GOP nod in 2024\, this topic took on even greater urgency! \nIn this unique\, fast-moving\, and thought-provoking presentation\, national award-winning public speaker and historian Barry Bradford will share the fascinating stories of the women who blazed the way for a sea change in the political process.  It won’t be Hillary Clinton\, Elizabeth Warren\, or Sarah Palin\, but included in the presentation will be a prediction of who will be the first woman to be elected President!  It may happen as soon as the Election of 2028! \n

SUMMARY:Understanding The Election Of 2008
DESCRIPTION:Understanding The Election Of 2008\nIf the election of 2008 had been written as a movie script\, it could not have been more exciting. We faced the possibility that we would elect the first woman to the presidency\, the first African-American to the presidency\, or perhaps one of America’s greatest war heroes to the presidency. The nomination battles were thrilling\, the personalities were oversized\, and just when it couldn’t seem to get any more fascinating\, Sen. John McCain chose obscure Alaska  Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate! \nIn this insightful\, nonpartisan multimedia presentation\, you will learn about the backgrounds of each of the campaigns and candidates in the election of 2008. You’ll learn the very different election strategies that each pursued. We will look at the role of technology\, social media\, race\, television\, and the debates as factors in deciding an election like no other. The election of 2008 provides us a fascinating glimpse into the future of campaigning.   \nWe’ll see how social media and voter tracking began to replace conventional television advertising as a means of motivating voters.  This effort led to long lines of voters across the country. We’ll also examine how one party began to utilize restrictive voting laws as a desperate means to try and ensure victory through voter suppression. \nThe career politician and war hero against a candidate with a painfully thin resume; a vice-presidential candidate with a penchant for gaffes versus one seemingly in way over her head.  This presentation on the election of 2008 is not to be missed. \n

SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: \nI am presenting a shortened version of this at several locations. This one is different because it will be in two parts and much more comprehensive. \nFilms will be presented chronologically. \nPolitics and the movies are a match made in heaven! Movies need compelling characters\, suspenseful plots\, unexpected twists\, and a great conclusion. Politics provides all the above and then some! In this remarkable new presentation\, Best Movies About Politics\, I’ll present my admittedly idiosyncratic list of the best films ever made about American politics. Some are dramas\, and some are comedies. Some are old classics\, and some are very modern. Some are well-known\, critically acclaimed Hollywood films\, and others are excellent but obscure! \nBest Movies About Politics\nThis fun\, fascinating\, and fast-moving presentation is one of my favorites\, combining my love of great cinema with a lifelong fascination with elections. And where else will you find a list that plausibly contains Henry Fonda\, Eddie Murphy\, Kirk Douglas\, George Clooney\, and Jimmy Stewart? From directors Frank Capra and Preston Sturges to Rob Reiner and screenwriters Aaron Sorkin to Rod Serling\, some of the most incredible talent in movie history have tackled the subject of elections in films that are entertaining\, thought-provoking\, and often unforgettable. We will look at clips from some of them and consider others! \nOf course\, we will leave time for discussion and your choices. SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world. We are the only nation to land a man on the moon. Our research universities are the envy of the world. And in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election. Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the election of 2000 was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime! And the victory of George W. Bush in the election of 2000 ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \nREGISTRATION! \nThis event is live and in person! Registration is required\, and there is a fee to attend. Please contact the nice sponsors\, and they will be glad to help you! \n  \n

SUMMARY:The History Of Political Satire
DESCRIPTION:The History of Political Satire – From Mark Twin To Stephen Colbert \n“Politicians and diapers should both be changed regularly and for the same reason\,” \nor so said America’s first great political satirist\, Mark Twain.  Although the history of political satire in America begins with Twain\, we will trace its rambunctious history in this wonderful multimedia presentation \nBeginning with Mark Twain\, this funny and thought-provoking multimedia presentation will trace the rise of political satire by looking at some of its greatest practitioners\, including Will Rogers\, Mort Sahl\, Dennis Miller\, and Stephen Colbert. \nAlthough Mark Twain and Will  Rogers began the art form of political satire as public entertainment\, the history of political satire shows that it has moved from a novelty to a staple of show business. \nWith the rise of television in the 1950s\, political satire became a vastly amusing and important part of the discussion about government and elections.  Mort Sahl’s controversial monologues eventually led to the Smothers Brothers\, Saturday Night Live\, and The Daily Show. \nWith the proliferation of cable TV and late-night talk/comedy shows\, you can barely escape political comedy if you try! \nJoin us for many insights\, some fantastic history\, and hilarious film clips as we trace the history of political satire in the USA! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Civil War Stories - Reflections On Amercia's Deadliest War
DESCRIPTION:1860 & 1861 The Civil War At 150\nA Nation Divided – 1860 1861 The Civil War \nThe Declaration Of Independence boldly stated “We hold these truths to be self evident\, that all men are created equal…” The Civil War tested whether or not we really meant it. In 1860\, our nation faced one of the most crucial elections in our history.  Four great candidates stood for office.  The only real issue was slavery. \nToday\, we see the practice of kidnapping human beings and holding them against their will as abhorrent.  In 1860\, the economy and social structure of an entire region of the United States were built on the premise that kidnapping and bondage were acceptable means of making money.  Our four-week series begins with an in-depth look at the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858\, the election of 1860\, and the secession of the Confederate States. In 1861\, the Civil War really began.  We saw American citizens in revolt against the Constitution while holding millions of people against their will.  We saw personal tragedies unfold as the tender-hearted Abraham Lincoln saw the body of the first American patriot killed by the rebels brought back to Washington\, DC.  It was Elmer Ellsworth.  He was a close friend of Lincoln’s. The death of Elmer Ellsworth represents the personal nature of this deadly fight. People happily brought picnic baskets to watch the First Battle Of Bull Run unfold.  By the end of the battle\, America knew war was not glamorous and victory would be difficult. We will explore how\, in 1861\, the Civil War began a great test of America’s moral purpose\, military strength\, and future direction. Today the battlefields of the Civil War are quiet. \nThe Battlefield at Bull Run \nWe will see how they were the sites of the greatest struggle in American history.

SUMMARY:Grover Cleveland - The Greatest President You Don't Know
DESCRIPTION:Here is a fun piece of political trivia. Name all the men who one the popular vote for president more than twice. Franklin Delano Roosevelt\, obviously. Andrew Jackson did it after first being robbed of the presidency by a deal made in the electoral college. But who is the third? The answer is Grover Cleveland -the best president you don’t know about!  Cleveland of one of the popular vote in three consecutive elections: 1880\, 1884\, and 1888. Grover Cleveland served two consequential  nonconsecutive terms after losing the Electoral College in a very narrow  contest in 1884. \nOne measure of presidential popularity is the ability to get reelected.  By being the choice of the American public three consecutive times\, Cleveland established himself as president who earned the trust of the American public. \nAs the only Democrat elected between the Civil War and 1912\, Grover Cleveland  was noted as a man of stubborn honesty and personal integrity even by those who bitterly opposed his policies.   Be sure to read this article about  his amazing life – our first superstar First Lady. This  completely unique multimedia presentation will educate\, entertain and intrigue you!

SUMMARY:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates
DESCRIPTION:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates\nWhat do Adlai Stevenson\, George McGovern\, Daniel Webster\, and Wendell Willkie have in common? \nEach ran for President and lost. In some cases\, more than once! \nAnd each was an outstanding man who might well have made a great President. \nIn this unique multimedia presentation\, I will share my list of the ten best men to run for President and lose.  I’ll offer fascinating glimpses into the men\, the times\, and the campaigns. \nWe will explore why each man failed in his bid and speculate on the different directions our country might have taken had the election been decided differently.  For instance\, how would America have responded on the morning of 9-11 if Al Gore had been President? Or if Wendell Willkie had been President on Pearl Harbor Day?  It’s fun to think about and debate! \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:First Look: The Election Of 2024
DESCRIPTION:It is 100 days before the election! \nIn this exciting and all-new presentation\, I will break down the electoral strategies of the Harris and the Trump campaigns\, showing you which states are in play\, what factors will be important in the final vote\, and answering all your questions. \nWe will also look at the crucial battle for the US Senate\, highlighting each of the states in play. With Republicans sure to pick up one seat in West Virginia\, all the GOP would need to get control of the Senate would be one more seat. Can the Democrats hold them off? Are there any possibilities of a Democratic pick-up? All of this and more!

SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics (Part I)
DESCRIPTION:Films will be presented chronologically. Let’s see what everyone else chooses as the best movies about politics! \n

SUMMARY:America's Purpose Statement: The Declaration Of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The most important sentence ever written by an American – a sentence that has inspired people in every part of the world – is found in America’s purpose statement! Click here to read more. The legacy of Washington\, Hancock\, Franklin\, Jefferson\, Adams\, Hamilton\, and Paul Revere still challenges us. \n \nOn a stifling July Thursday in 1776\, our Founding Fathers agreed to a completely unique document in the world’s history. Many revolutions had occurred over the centuries\, but never had one begun with a philosophical purpose statement. \nAlthough the Declaration of Independence has no legal power\, it has become the guiding beacon for what America strives to become. As the events of 2020 showed\, we as a nation are a world leader in human rights\, yet America is still a work in progress. \n \nWhy study the Declaration of Independence? It is the ultimate statement of what we hope to become. Freedom movements in the USA and worldwide have quoted it. \nYet many Americans know surprisingly little about it. In this exciting and thought-provoking multimedia presentation\, I will present the thrilling themes\, difficult negotiations\, contradictory\, complex\, charismatic personalities\, and exciting events leading to the most critical moment in American history. \n\n
