DESCRIPTION:In the first half of the 20th century\, the Cubs were one of the mightiest teams in all of baseball – a perennial pennant contender despite not winning the World Series since 1908. \nThe second half of baseball’s 20th century entrenched an indelible phrase in America’s national consciousness:  The Chicago Cubs were “lovable losers.” Despite having some absolutely great players – Ernie Banks\, Ron Santo\, Billy Williams\, Fergie Jenkins\, Greg Maddux\, Mark Grace\, Ryne Sandberg\, Kerry Wood\, Carlos Zambrano\, and Sammy Sosa – the Cubs rarely reached the postseason. More commonly\, they mostly endured one long losing season after another long losing season.  Empty bleachers\, a crumbling  Wrigley Field\, cheap ownership and terrible trades became the lasting hallmarks of the once mighty Chicago Cubs. Even when the Cubs would field occasionally field a strong\, competitive team and begin to make a promising  postseason run\, something always seemed to go wrong. The Cubs were still “lovable losers.” \nIn 1969\, a black cat running in front of Ron Santo  seemed to symbolize the utter futility of the Cubs.A normally sure handed first baseman let a ball go by him and the postseason was lost. A hapless fan wearing headphones reached for a foul ball and our World Series hopes were dashed. On and on it went. And then came 2015!  The arrival of some of the most talented prospects in baseball history created a team that was fun\, exciting and competitive. In 2016\, the Cubs finally won the World Series! \nThe long\, slow\, march of the Cubs – from the cheapness and racism of the Wrigley years\, to the boredom and inactivity of the years of ownership by the Chicago Tribune and by Sam Zell have given way to a unique feeling of hopefulness on the part of Cub fans.  A robust ownership team brought in the financial resources and personnel necessary to begin turning the Cubs into a perennial contender once again. DESCRIPTION: History Vs. the Movies: Mississippi Burning\nMississippi Burning: The Civil Rights Era is one of the most exciting\, important\, and electrifying eras in American history. \nFrom a cinematic standpoint\, it had everything. Dynamic and diverse leadership\, powerful and determined villains\, mystery\, motivation\, and manipulation. Nonetheless\, movies about the era generally not been hits and despite the hype about Selma\, no great masterpiece of filmmaking has yet emerged. “Mississippi Burning”  is a brilliant film but\, from a historical point of view\, utter nonsense. “Selma” is a maddening jumble. In its sections on Martin Luther King\, it is extraordinary. In its sections on Lyndon Johnson\, it is completely misleading. “Ghosts of Mississippi” is an earnest and well-made film about the trial of the murderer of Medgar Evers. However\, unless you already knew quite a bit about Medgar Evers\, you would leave the film wondering who exactly he was. \nSome of the best films about the Civil Rights Movement have actually been made-for-TV films. Clark Johnson directed “Boycott”  for HBO and it combines arresting visuals with superb acting. The Rosa Parks made-for-TV movie was likewise very good. Spike Lee directed an outstanding documentary\, “Four Little Girls.”  But so far\, a genuine cinematic masterpiece about the Civil Rights Era has eluded filmmakers. \nIn this fast-moving and thought-provoking multimedia presentation\, we will look at clips from some of the films about the Civil Rights Movement.   Our special focus will be on “Mississippi Burning.” Using inside stories\, personal anecdotes and a clear timeline\, we will see how this brilliantly made film distorted history and changed America’s perceptions about the Movement. \nCheck this out: in “Mississippi Burning\,”  the FBI gets an invaluable ship to find out where the bodies are buried. The screenwriter and director had to fictionalize where the tip came from. That is because the mystery informant had never been revealed. DESCRIPTION:In the first half of the 20th century\, the Cubs were one of the mightiest teams in all of baseball – a perennial pennant contender despite not winning the World Series since 1908. \nThe second half of baseball’s 20th century entrenched an indelible phrase in America’s national consciousness:  The Chicago Cubs were “lovable losers.” Despite having some absolutely great players – Ernie Banks\, Ron Santo\, Billy Williams\, Fergie Jenkins\, Greg Maddux\, Mark Grace\, Ryne Sandberg\, Kerry Wood\, Carlos Zambrano\, and Sammy Sosa – the Cubs rarely reached the postseason. More commonly\, they mostly endured one long losing season after another long losing season.  Empty bleachers\, a crumbling  Wrigley Field\, cheap ownership and terrible trades became the lasting hallmarks of the once mighty Chicago Cubs. Even when the Cubs would field occasionally field a strong\, competitive team and begin to make a promising  postseason run\, something always seemed to go wrong. The Cubs were still “lovable losers.” \nIn 1969\, a black cat running in front of Ron Santo  seemed to symbolize the utter futility of the Cubs.A normally sure handed first baseman let a ball go by him and the postseason was lost. A hapless fan wearing headphones reached for a foul ball and our World Series hopes were dashed. On and on it went. And then came 2015!  The arrival of some of the most talented prospects in baseball history created a team that was fun\, exciting and competitive. In 2016\, the Cubs finally won the World Series! \nThe long\, slow\, march of the Cubs – from the cheapness and racism of the Wrigley years\, to the boredom and inactivity of the years of ownership by the Chicago Tribune and by Sam Zell have given way to a unique feeling of hopefulness on the part of Cub fans.  A robust ownership team brought in the financial resources and personnel necessary to begin turning the Cubs into a perennial contender once again. DESCRIPTION:Ernie Pyle was one of the greatest reporters in American history. after writing one of the most popular and widely published newspaper columns in the USA\, he became the voice of the average infantry soldier during World War II. In this role\, Ernie Pyle became legendary. \nThe Second World War was covered by a number of brilliant journalists. Edward R. Murrow broadcast brilliantly from the rooftops of London\, William L. Shirer personally witnessed the entry of Hitler into Austria and Walter Cronkite tirelessly covered the War for the United Press. Each filed memorable reports that helped Americans better understand the War. \nMeanwhile\, Ernie Pyle carved out an unforgettable niche for himself. Instead of covering the “big picture” of the War\, Pyle traveled alongside the infantry. He became what we today would call an embedded journalist. Marching alongside the average G.I. Joe – a term he helped popularize – Ernie Pyle reported the “little picture.” He recorded the daily gripes and fears and small moments of humor encountered by the foot soldiers marching through Italy and then Germany. Millions of Americans read his column every day. His prose was crisp and observant and caring and sardonic. \nWhen the War ended in Europe\, Ernie Pyle went to join the forces preparing to invade Japan. On Okinawa\, Ernie Pyle was killed by a sniper. The grief felt by his millions of readers and the entire Army was all but immeasurable. Tributes flowed from the President\, from the leaders of the American military and from journalists around the world. Perhaps the simple plaque erected by the soldiers who had marched alongside him would have been his favorite memorial. It read: \nAt this spot  \nThe 77th Infantry Division  \nLost a buddy.  \nERNIE PYLE.  \n18 April 1945 \nTo this day\, Ernie Pyle’s unique life\, unforgettable writing\, and tragic death place him in the pantheon of great correspondents. The School Of Journalism at Indiana University is named for Ernie Pyle and a number of books and a movie have helped keep his memory alive. DESCRIPTION:For two tumultuous decades\, Richard J Daley was indisputably the all powerful mayor of the city of Chicago. From 1955 until 1976\, his name was synonymous with “The City That Works.” At times\, it seemed as if he would be mayor for ever. When he died very suddenly\, the city was shocked to learn that there was no clear-cut successor outlined in city ordinances! For a full week\, it was not clear from either a legal or a political standpoint who actually had succeeded him as mayor. \n  \nIn this fascinating and unique multimedia series\, we will look at the colorful\, charismatic\, controversial men and woman who served as mayor of Chicago after the death of  long time Mayor Richard J Daley. Jane Byrne was the first woman to be mayor but her quirky personality undercut her idiosyncratic efforts at political reform. Chicago’s first African-American mayor\, Harold Washington was initially elected by a bitterly divided electorate. Despite ongoing battles with the obstinate City Council\, he then won a crushing reelection victory. Washington’s attempts to change the way Chicago does business ended abruptly with his death in office early in his second term. Richard M Daley wanted to move Chicago into becoming a technological city as opposed to an industrial mecca. Although he served as mayor longer than his father\, the constant controversies\, scandals\, and arrests of his allies marred the legacy of a mayor who rebuilt Chicago’s image. \nRichard M. Daley served as mayor even longer than his father did!  The significant accomplishments of his first two terms were obscured by a growing number of serious scandals during the later years of his reign. \nWith Mayor Rahm Emanuel under fire\, facing calls to resign\, it is fascinating to look at the varied life stories\, unique elections and mixed records of the men and woman who have guided Chicago since the death of Richard J. And her role in attacking the conclusions of the Warren Commission became in enormously important and highly controversial as Americans began to question the conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin of Pres. Kennedy! \nDorothy Kilgallen  was the first woman in America ever to be a full-time murder reporter. She broke numerous major scoops andoften  made national headlines with her fearless coverage of criminal trials. \nWhen Dorothy Kilgallen learned that a male newspaper reporter was going to try to break the record for the fastest trip around the world\, Dorothy Kilgallen  decided to challenge him to a race. Her exploits not only made her famous but were even fictionalized in a movie!  \nThis fame led her to New York and a position as both a serious reporter and a catty gossip columnist covering Broadway. Her unique career led her into a major feud with Frank Sinatra\, put her in a position to break open the Sam Shepard murder case and  break the story of Marilyn Monroe’s affair with Pres. John F. Kennedy. \nDorothy Kilgallen  became the first mainstream newspaper Porter in the country to question the Warren Commission. She endlessly attacked them\, always hinting that she knew more than she was saying at the moment. When she died under very mysterious circumstances\, many people concluded that she was murdered to shut her up about what she knew about the assassination of JFK. \nIn this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will learn the unexpected\, unparalleled and definitely unique story of the life and death of an amazing woman.
