SUMMARY:Barry's Best Of Broadway
DESCRIPTION:As a professional cultural Historian (and a self-described Broadway fanatic) I have actually seen well over 200 performances on Broadway! \nI truly love going to the theater in New York City! Accordingly\, I make several trips a year to Manhattan just to see what’s new on Broadway! In my home\, I host a Tony Awards Show party the way many men host a Super Bowl party! (I am not kidding – I cook for two days and we even get dressed up!) \nBarry’s Best Of Broadway\nI am so excited to offer an exciting new program featuring the stories and songs of some of my favorite Broadway musicals of all time. We will compare complementary shows from Broadway’s classic era (1943 – 1970) and Broadway’s modern era (1970 – 2018) \nThis allows to see how a classic like”The King And I”  relates to a modern show like  “Anastasia” \nYou will hear insider stories on each of the ten productions we will feature. In addition\, I will talk about the cultural importance of the musical and\, of course\, let you see and hear performances of some of the greatest songs from Broadway. However\, I have a very special feature that I am delighted to announce: we will have live renditions of some of the music! \nLive Music\nAs a very special treat – we will have live performances of some of the songs\, performed by the amazing young soloist Cameron Faith Baron. Those of you who have heard my presentation on “Hamilton” will remember Cameron Faith Baron as the absolutely amazing singer who brought down the house with her renditions of  “Burn\,” “Satisfied” and “That Would Be Enough.” Wait until you hear her sing gorgeous songs from shows like “Come From Away\,” “Waitress\,” “Anastasia\, and “Carole King’s Beautiful!”  Since Cameron is booked for a musical starting in January\, this presentation will not be repeated next year! Do not miss it! \n  \n

SUMMARY:First Ladies of the 20th and 21st Centuries
DESCRIPTION:First Ladies of the 20th and 21st Centuries\nWhen Martha Washington became our first First Lady\, she stepped into a roll with no job description and no precedent. She handled the position with grace and polish. however\, each of the extraordinary women who served as First Lady brought something unique and different to the role. \nFirst Ladies of the 20th and 21st Centuries\n \nThis installment in our series on the history of the First Ladies looks at the changing roles taken on by the wives of the presidents from 1932 – 2012. We begin with Eleanor Roosevelt and conclude with Michelle Obama. This is certainly a distinctive mix of personalities and aspirations! We will look at the “traditional” First Ladies who took on the role of wife and mother and shunned the spotlight. This group includes Bess Truman\,  Mamie Eisenhower\, and Barbara Bush. Jacqueline Kennedy carved out a very different niche for herself\, raising a young family while bringing glamour back to the White House. Several of the  First Ladies in this group were transformative figures. Lady Bird Johnson\, Nancy Reagan and Rosalyn Carter were tremendously influential in their husband’s administrations. Betty Ford brought a new candor to the position. And our most recent First Ladies – Hillary Clinton\, Laura Bush\, and Michelle Obama raised the bar in terms of education and professional accomplishment before serving as First Lady. \nUsing numerous film clips\, intriguing insights\,  thought provoking comparisons\, and fascinating anecdotes\, I will open your eyes to the very different personalities and accomplishments of the First Ladies of the 20th and 21st centuries.

SUMMARY:The Mafia And The Building Of Las Vegas
DESCRIPTION:Fabulous Las Vegas has gone through several fascinating eras! It was a desert town that grew when the railroads came through. To accommodate the railroad workers\, a wide open culture of brothels\, saloons and gambling developed in the dusty desert outpost. \nIn the 1940s\, Bugsy Siegel convinced the Mafia leaders of New York City that the obscure Nevada city would be the perfect spot to build a fabulous a resort and casino that would serve two important purposes for La Casa Nostra – it would make huge amounts of money and it would serve as a clearinghouse to launder money made in illegal activities.  The fantastic Flamingo \n \nhotel was the result. It opened the door to the transformation of Las Vegas and shifting alliances\, strategies and leadership in the Mob. \nWe will explore the colorful personalities (including the Frank Sinatra and his cronies\, the  Rat Pack) \, strategic alliances and unexpected twists and turns that allowed the Mob to make Las Vegas a mecca for entertainment \n \ngambling and adult fun – until the law caught up with them.

SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans simply do not know very much about the Revolutionary War.   \nAlthough certain images from the Revolutionary War are seared into our memory – Washington Crossing the Delaware  and the signing of the Declaration of Independence –  many people would be hard-pressed to name a major battle\, a leading general or even how the War For Independence ended.  Recent events in America have caused some to question whether we should even have statues of George Washington on public display. \nTHE REVOLUTIONARY WAR\n In this four-part series on the Revolutionary War we will examine why the freest and most prosperous colonials in the world decided to declare independence from a mother country that had protected them. We will look at the roots of the war\, the Declaration of Independence\, the early battles including Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill before transitioning into a longer look at the seven years of fighting necessary for America to begin its experiment in participatory democracy. We will also look at the amazing and diverse leaders who guided America. Benjamin Franklin\,James Monroe\, John Adams\, Paul Revere\, George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, and Alexander Hamilton will be some of the people whom we will meet. I encourage you to learn more about how America came to be!

SUMMARY:The Doolittle Raid - Flying Into Greatness
DESCRIPTION:The Doolittle Raid: America Fights Back\n \nAfter the deadly surprise attack on Pearl Harbor\, the USA wanted. Pres. Roosevelt knew that it would inevitably be a long war when we took on the forces of the Japanese Army and Navy. Our forces were insufficient before the devastating attack on Hawaii.  nonetheless\, FDR wanted to send a strong\, clear\, and unmistakable message to the Japanese: the United States WOULD fight back. \n An Unexpected Plan\nCol. Jimmy Doolitte volunteered to lead a group of raiders on one of the most  audacious attacks of all time. The plan was to drop bombs on Tokyo in the middle of the daytime. The Japanese people have been told that their island was invulnerable to an outside attack. If the Doolittle Raiders were successful\, their attack would be a shattering blow to the Japanese psyche. The only problem was that there was no practical way for American planes to attack the Japanese mainland. But utilizing American ingenuity\, full support of Pres. Roosevelt and Gen. George C Marshall\, and sheer bravado\, the Doolittle Raiders flew into greatness. \nThe heart stopping story of the Doolittle raid makes for drilling multimedia presentation offered  by master storyteller. \n

SUMMARY:The Chicago Cubs - 1945 - 2016
DESCRIPTION:In the first half of the 20th century\, the Cubs were one of the mightiest teams in all of baseball – a perennial pennant contender despite not winning the World Series since 1908. \nThe second half of baseball’s 20th century entrenched an indelible phrase in America’s national consciousness:  The Chicago Cubs were “lovable losers.” Despite having some absolutely great players – Ernie Banks\, Ron Santo\, Billy Williams\, Fergie Jenkins\, Greg Maddux\, Mark Grace\, Ryne Sandberg\, Kerry Wood\, Carlos Zambrano\, and Sammy Sosa – the Cubs rarely reached the postseason. More commonly\, they mostly endured one long losing season after another long losing season.  Empty bleachers\, a crumbling  Wrigley Field\, cheap ownership and terrible trades became the lasting hallmarks of the once mighty Chicago Cubs. Even when the Cubs would field occasionally field a strong\, competitive team and begin to make a promising  postseason run\, something always seemed to go wrong. The Cubs were still “lovable losers.” \nIn 1969\, a black cat running in front of Ron Santo  seemed to symbolize the utter futility of the Cubs.A normally sure handed first baseman let a ball go by him and the postseason was lost. A hapless fan wearing headphones reached for a foul ball and our World Series hopes were dashed. On and on it went. And then came 2015!  The arrival of some of the most talented prospects in baseball history created a team that was fun\, exciting and competitive. In 2016\, the Cubs finally won the World Series! \nThe long\, slow\, march of the Cubs – from the cheapness and racism of the Wrigley years\, to the boredom and inactivity of the years of ownership by the Chicago Tribune and by Sam Zell have given way to a unique feeling of hopefulness on the part of Cub fans.  A robust ownership team brought in the financial resources and personnel necessary to begin turning the Cubs into a perennial contender once again. In this multimedia presentation\, filled  with fabulous film clips\, amazing anecdotes\, and nostalgic photos\, we will trace  the confounding  Chicago Cubs from 1945 to 2016. \n  \nPlease note – reservations are requested!

SUMMARY:Paul Revere A Patriot With A Purpose
DESCRIPTION:Paul Revere A Patriot With A Purpose\nPaul Revere is a unique figure in USA history.  His name is universally known for his daring “Midnight Ride” yet Revere seems to appear out of nowhere on that one fateful day and then disappear sthe next.  Like Rosa Parks\, he seems to be important for one day of his life which changes American History and then vanishes.  But like Mrs. Parks\, he led a rich\, full and important life before and after his moment of fame. \nWhile Americans probably recall something of the drama of Paul Revere’s ride\, the details are more harrowing\, exciting and heroic than you may realize. Revere was captured by the British and threatened with death. Risking his life\, the dashing Paul Revere escaped the clutches of the British troops! He rode through their lines and saved the lives of both John Hancock and John Adams.  Paul Revere even managed to smuggle top-secret documents to safety under the nose of the British column! \nHow was Paul Revere a Patriot with a purpose? Come to this exciting and unexpected presentation to learn about how he helped organize the USA’s first spy network\, revolutionized American industry – oh\, and managed to take the midnight ride!

SUMMARY:Holiday Inn The Musical & Waitress The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Two very different but very wonderful Broadway musicals are playing in Chicago this year. This unique\, brand-new multimedia presentation will take an in-depth look at both. \n “Waitress” is one of the most acclaimed musicals currently playing on Broadway. It is the first major Broadway musical ever to have an all-female creative team!  The music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles are powerful\, evocative\, funny and sentimental. The plot\, revolving around a waitress who dreams of being a high baking champion to escape a dreary life touches on deep emotional chords for the audience. This is one of my favorite shows of the past few years on Broadway. \n “Holiday Inn” is a brand-new stage adaptation of the timeless Irving Berlin omnibus musical movie that featured Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby.  “Holiday Inn” features some of Irving Berlin’s best holiday music including\, “White Christmas\,”  “Easter Parade” “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve\,” & “Happy Holidays.” \nIn this fast-moving and music filled presentation\, will examine the backstory of each of the productions.  although their work is obviously very different\, we will look deeply at the work of the composers\, Irving Berlin and Sara Bareilles\,  and listen to some of the amazing music featured in each show. \n  \nIf you are a fan of Broadway musicals\, you definitely do not want to miss this presentation!

SUMMARY:TV By The Decades: Television in the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:TV in the 1960s \nThe 1960s were definitely one of TV’s oddest decades! The 1960s began with Westerns dominating the ratings! The old West soap opera Bonanza became the most popular show on the air. One after another competing show was vanquished by the old time sensibilities of an old-fashioned Western. All you need to know about the diverse nature of TV in the 1960s is found in the answer to the question: “What show finally was able to compete with Bonanza in the ratings?” The answer was a liberal\, modern and very controversial challenger: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. This bastion of hip\, cutting edge liberal comedy gave young viewers quite a stark alternative to the Ponderosa! \nSo the 1960s were the era of Gunsmoke and Wagon Train\, Gilligan’s Island and The Beverly Hillbillies and Laugh-In and The Smothers Brothers! We will talk about how TV grew and changed as viewers who had enjoyed Combat began tuning in to Hogan’s Heroes. You won’t want to miss this fast paced multimedia presentation! \nIN THE COMMENTS BELOW – LIST YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW OF THE 1960s!

SUMMARY:The Democratic Convention Of 1968
DESCRIPTION:1968 Democratic Convention\n \n“The Whole World Is Watching!  The Whole World Is Watching! So when the chant from thousands of protesters caught in a pitched battle with the police on the streets of Chicago is the Democratic Party sought to nominate a candidate for president. The Democratic convention riots of 1967 were turning point in history of politics and in the history of Chicago. Never before had live television cameras cameras captured what was later termed a “police riot” live on television.  While the battle of Chicago raged wildly on Michigan Avenue\, the tension erupted in violence and anger in the convention hall itself. \nAs the nation watched  in disbelief\, convention delegates and network reporters were beaten\, delegate credentials were forged in an effort to pack the galleries with Chicago city employees\, and the mayor of the city\, Richard J Daley\, screamed an obscenity at a Jewish United States senator on live television. \nIn this exciting multimedia presentation\, we will explore the roots of the events that culminated in the riots of 1968. From growing public frustration to the stalemate in Vietnam in the wake of the Tet Offensive to the insurgent campaign of Sen. Eugene McCarthy\, politics in America were thrown into turmoil. And just as the country seemed more and more to be spinning out of control\, we were hit with the shock of the public assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King and Sen. Robert F.  Kennedy. All of these events and many more makes for an exceptionally exciting\, thought-provoking\, and mesmerizing presentation.

\nLive Music\nAs a special treat – we will have live performances of some of the songs\, performed by the amazing soloist Cameron Faith Baron. Those of you who have heard my presentation on “Hamilton” will remember Cameron Faith Baron as the absolutely amazing singer who brought down the house with her renditions of  “Burn\,” “Satisfied” and “That Would Be Enough.” Wait until you hear her sing gorgeous songs from shows like  “She Loves Me” and Carole King’s Beautiful! You are in for a treat! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cary Grant
DESCRIPTION:Cary Grant was one of the biggest stars in the history of classic Hollywood cinema. He made more than 50 films as a leading man and yet never won an Oscar!  In fact\, his looks\, voice\, and persona make him the personification of the leading man. Cary Grant starred in some of the greatest screwball/romantic comedies ever made. “Bringing up Baby\,” “His Girl Friday\,” & “The Philadelphia Story”  are just the tip of the iceberg for his great career in light comedy. \nIn the 1940s\, Grant made a number of very well received action pictures. \nAnd then  in the 1950s\, he transitioned into dramatic roles. He was particularly brilliant in “North by Northwest” one of Hitchcock’s greatest films. 1957 “An Affair To Remember” is yet another great example of Grant’s abilities as a dramatic actor. \nThis fast-paced presentation is loaded with film clips and interesting anecdotes about the long\, legendary\, and laudable career of the great Cary Grant. \nRegistration is required; please contact the venue!

SUMMARY:Hizzoner - Richard J. Daley\, The Mayor Of Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Richard J. Daley was the Mayor of Chicago for 21 years.\nThe Legacy Of Richard J. Daley\nHis legacy is complex and his accomplishments controversial\, substantial\, and long-lasting. \nA poll of professional historians named Richard J. Daley as the sixth most effective mayor in the history of the United States. \nDr. Martin Luther King Jr. saw Mayor Daley as the embodiment of segregation and racism. \nRichard J. Daley’s methods were not democratic but White Chicago grew and prospered under his leadership. Richard J. Daley’s early life reads like a Horatio Alger story. He was the grandson of a butcher. He was the son of a sheet metal worker.  Richard J. Daley sold newspapers\, worked in the stockyards\, and made deliveries. He worked his way through school during the depression\, taking night classes to learn clerical skills and then a law degree. \n He worked his way up through the Chicago political machine\, beginning as a Democratic Precinct captain. He was actually elected as a Republican to the state legislature\, but quickly switched parties. He worked with then Gov. Adlai Stevenson and worked his way up through the ranks of the Democratic Party. His election as mayor cemented his power in Chicago. Whether he was overseeing the massive building projects in downtown Chicago\, fighting against the efforts of Martin Luther King to integrate the city\, battling protesters at the 1968 Democratic convention\, or building a party infrastructure that would last well beyond his lifetime\, Richard J. Daley led an extraordinary life. \nIn this fast-paced multimedia presentation\, we will delve into the personal background and relationships of Chicago’s Mayor Richard J. Daley. We will look at his complex\, controversial\, and contradictory reputation for effectiveness and repression. You will come away with a deeper understanding – if not a different opinion – of Mayor Richard J. Daley.

DESCRIPTION:In a span of just seven years\, Preston Sturges had an unparalleled run of making some of the greatest American movies of all time.    \nThe films of Preston Sturges are absolutely unique\, unforgettable and utterly brilliant. However\, although his Hollywood career lasted over 35 years\, the movies Preston Sturges wrote and directed between 1938-1945 alone were enough to cement his reputation as one of the most influential directors and respected screenwriters of all time.  After becoming the first screenwriter of the talking movie era to be allowed to direct his own films\,  Preston Sturges created a unique body of work that still delights and challenges and amuses audiences 80 years later.
