SUMMARY:The Life Of Lincoln
DESCRIPTION:When Abraham Lincoln became President\, he was two years younger than George W. Bush was when he became Chief Executive! In fact\, he never wore a beard until after he was elected! The Life Of Lincoln is filled with surprises\, shrouded in myths and ultimately an uplifting story of a great man \nAbraham Lincoln is our most familiar President. Any American could identify him on sight. Yet his life was surprisingly complex\, and the truth is often shrouded in myth. Lincoln scholar Barry Bradford will offer a frank\, surprising and intriguing multimedia presentation on the real man under the stove-pipe hat. Don’t miss the Life Of Lincoln!

SUMMARY:Barry's Best Of Broadway
DESCRIPTION:As a professional cultural Historian (and a self-described Broadway fanatic) I have actually seen well over 200 performances on Broadway! \nI truly love going to the theater in New York City! Accordingly\, I make several trips a year to Manhattan just to see what’s new on Broadway! In my home\, I host a Tony Awards Show party the way many men host a Super Bowl party! (I am not kidding – I cook for two days and we even get dressed up!) \nBarry’s Best Of Broadway\nI am so excited to offer an exciting new program featuring the stories and songs of some of my favorite Broadway musicals of all time. We will compare complementary shows from Broadway’s classic era (1943 – 1970) and Broadway’s modern era (1970 – 2018) \nThis allows you to see how a classic like “The King And I”  relates to a modern show like  “Anastasia” or how “South Pacific” and “Hamilton” are related. \nYou will hear insider stories on each of the ten productions we will feature. In addition\, I will talk about the cultural importance of the musical and\, of course\, let you see and hear performances of some of the greatest songs from Broadway. However\, I have a very special feature that I am delighted to announce: we will have live renditions of some of the music! \nLive Music\nAs a very special treat – we will have live performances of some of the songs\, performed by the amazing young soloist Cameron Faith Baron. Those of you who have heard my presentation on “Hamilton” will remember Cameron Faith Baron as the absolutely amazing singer who brought down the house with her renditions of  “Burn\,” “Satisfied” and “That Would Be Enough.” Wait until you hear her sing gorgeous songs from shows like “Come From Away\,” “Waitress\,” “Anastasia\, and “Carole King’s Beautiful!”  \nSince Cameron Faith Baron is booked for a musical starting in January\, this presentation will not be repeated next year! Do not miss it! \nCOST: The price includes a delicious lunch! Therefore\, reservations are required! Contact the venue! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tom Hanks
DESCRIPTION:If you were watching TV in 1980\, you might have noticed a curly haired 26-year-old named Tom Hanks starring in an innocuous new show about a couple of male  best friends/roommates who dressed up in drag in order to live in a women’s only residence. \nHow could we imagine the silly star of “Bosom Buddies” would go on to become of the greatest stars in the entire history of the movies? Tom Hanks’ long career has led him to be compared with the great Jimmy Stewart – and the comparison seems more accurate with each passing year. \nLike Jimmy Stewart\, Tom Hanks has starred in almost every genre of movie. Hanks has been a smash doing comedy\, (“Splash” “Big”) drama (“Saving Private Ryan\,” “The Post”) and been a leading man in romantic films (“You’ve Got Mail.” “Sleepless In Seattle) Hanks has starred in historical epics (“Sully\, Apollo 13”) and has won two Oscars amidst his five nominations. Clearly\, Tom Hanks has built a legendary career\, appearing in almost eighty films. And at only 61\, he has the potential to keep working for a long time! \nPlease join us for this great multimedia presentation on the life and career of Tom Hanks. SUMMARY:Movies About Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln On Film
DESCRIPTION:No American President has been portrayed on film more often than Abraham Lincoln! \nFrom the earliest days of silent movies\, Lincoln has been featured in more movies than all other Presidents combined. The most brilliant of these iconic performances can be seen in John Ford’s groundbreaking “Young Mr. Lincoln” starring Henry Fonda. Raymond Massey played Lincoln so often on stage\, movies\, and TV that George S. Kaufman famously observed: “[Raymond] Massey won’t be satisfied until he’s assassinated!” \nEven in contemporary films such as Spielberg’s “Lincoln\,” the myth of Honest Abe grows and evolves with each movie. SUMMARY:Sherman's March To The Sea - Saving America By Destroying A Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:Sherman’s March To The Sea – Saving America By Destroying A Rebellion\n No military action in the bloody Civil War was probably more controversial than Sherman’s March To The Sea. After the War\, traitors who were inclined to respect Grant and revere Lincoln were unreconstructed in their hatred of William T. Sherman. Why? The brutal\, unprecedented destruction of enormous swaths of the South hastened the end of the War and sped the end of the barbarous\,immoral and inhumane practice of the enslavement\, rape and murder of the descendants of kidnap victims. Sherman hastened the demise of that unspeakable activity. However the utter desolation of the lives and lands of so many White Southerners had a long-lasting impact on race relations and politics. \nSherman was a complex man\, brilliant and fragile\, harsh and yet sentimental. His troops adored him\, leaders of the terrorist rebellion feared him and Abraham Lincoln recognized his invaluable patriotic service to our nation. In this fast paced and constantly fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will learn how Gen. William Sherman and his troops easily crushed the army of traitors who stood in their way – in the process making military history and helping save the republic. Add to that his friendship with General Grant\, his deep respect for President Lincoln\, his amazing life after the war – they all  make for a compelling and fascinating history presentation!   \n

SUMMARY:Paul Revere A Patriot With A Purpose
DESCRIPTION:Paul Revere A Patriot With A Purpose\nPaul Revere is a unique figure in USA history.  His name is universally known for his “Midnight Ride” yet he seems to appear out of nowhere on that day and disappear the next.  Like Rosa Parks\, he seems to be important for one day of his life which changes American History and then simply vanishes.  But like Mrs. Parks\, Paul Revere was a brave\, determined and respected leader who led a rich\, full and important life before and after his moment of fame. \nWhile Americans recall something of the drama of Paul Revere’s ride\, the details are more harrowing\, exciting and heroic than you may realize. The CIA credits Revere as organizing the first spy network to protect America! \nRevere was captured by the British and threatened with death. He escaped the clutches and rode through their lines and saved the next of John Hancock and John Adams.  Using his quick wits and unbelievable courage\, Paul Revere even managed to smuggle top-secret documents to safety under the nose of the British column! \nHow was Paul Revere a Patriot with a purpose? Come to this exciting and unexpected presentation to learn about how the amazing Paul Revere organized Boston’s resistance to a foreign occupation\, revolutionized American industry – oh\, and managed to take the midnight ride!

SUMMARY:The Chicago Cubs - 1945 - 2016
DESCRIPTION:In the first half of the 20th century\, the Chicago Cubs were one of the mightiest teams in all of baseball – a perennial pennant contender despite not winning the World Series since 1908. \nThe second half of baseball’s 20th century entrenched an indelible phrase in America’s national consciousness:  The Chicago Cubs were “lovable losers.” Despite having some absolutely great players – Ernie Banks\, Ron Santo\, Billy Williams\, Fergie Jenkins\, Greg Maddux\, Mark Grace\, Ryne Sandberg\, Kerry Wood\, Carlos Zambrano\, and Sammy Sosa – the Cubs rarely reached the postseason. More commonly\, they mostly endured one long losing season after another long losing season.  Empty bleachers\, a crumbling  Wrigley Field\, cheap ownership and terrible trades became the lasting hallmarks of the once mighty Chicago Cubs. Even when the Cubs would field occasionally field a strong\, competitive team and begin to make a promising  postseason run\, something always seemed to go wrong. The Cubs were still “lovable losers.” \nIn 1969\, a black cat running in front of Ron Santo  seemed to symbolize the utter futility of the Cubs.A normally sure handed first baseman let a ball go by him and the postseason was lost. A hapless fan wearing headphones reached for a foul ball and our World Series hopes were dashed. On and on it went. And then came 2015!  The arrival of some of the most talented prospects in baseball history created a team that was fun\, exciting and competitive. In 2016\, the Cubs finally won the World Series! \nThe long\, slow\, march of the Cubs – from the cheapness and racism of the Wrigley years\, to the boredom and inactivity of the years of ownership by the Chicago Tribune and by Sam Zell have given way to a unique feeling of hopefulness on the part of Cub fans.  A robust ownership team brought in the financial resources and personnel necessary to begin turning the Cubs into a perennial contender once again. In this multimedia presentation\, filled  with fabulous film clips\, amazing anecdotes\, and nostalgic photos\, we will trace  the confounding  Chicago Cubs from 1945 to 2016. \n  \nPlease note – reservations are requested!

SUMMARY:Marilyn Monroe
DESCRIPTION: It is one of the most iconic photographs ever taken: Marilyn Monroe standing over a subway grate in the summer during “The Seven Year Itch.” People who have never seen the film; in fact people who have never seen a Marilyn Monroe film immediately know who she is. \nHer fame was so great\, her life was so tempestuous\, her love affairs so notorious\, her films so great\, her sadness so profound and her death so mysterious that this multimedia presentation is mesmerizing and compelling. \nOne of the most neglected aspects of Marilyn \n  Monroe’s story is just how terrific an actress she was! Although Marilyn’s looks are what got her parts in movies\, she was a serious actress who worked hard to perfect her craft. In a career that was about one decade long\, she managed to star in some of the best films ever produced in Hollywood. We will look at her career and her immense talent. \nThis biography will also look at the private Marilyn\, her affair with John F. Kennedy\, her marriages to famous men and the controversy surrounding her tragic death.

SUMMARY:Irving Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Irving Berlin has often been called the most quintessentially American songwriter of all time. This is high praise for anyone – especially for an immigrant from Russia who came to America and not speaking a word of English. As with so many immigrants\, Berlin came to love this country with a deep and abiding passion. He never lost his sense of gratitude to the USA!  But Irving Berlin’s music is much more than just the unforgettable “God Bless America.”  \nOver the course of a 60-year career\, Irving Berlin wrote more than 1500 songs. While many are forgotten\, his best work stands among the best work ever written for the movies and the Broadway stage.  when Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were dancing “Cheek to Cheek\,”  they were dancing to Irving Berlin’s music. When soldiers lamented “Oh\, How I Hate to Get up in the Morning\,” they were singing Irving Berlin. On Christian holidays\, people saying “White Christmas” or  “Easter Parade.”  I wonder how many of those people remembered that the songs were written by a Jewish man who celebrated neither Eastern or Christmas! \n The life and career of Irving Berlin\, from “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” to  “Annie Get Your Gun” is one of the most fascinating stories of American popular culture history. I can’t wait to share with you in this wonderful multimedia presentation.

SUMMARY:Ike – A Biography of the Private Life Of A Great American
DESCRIPTION:Ike –  A Biography of the Private Life Of A Great American\nVery few Americans have ever had an impact on the world that could equal that of Dwight David Eisenhower. \nHe did a brilliant job as commander of allied forces in World War II\, despite having very limited combat experience. Click here to read a fascinating\, little-known story about how General Eisenhower was prepared to take full responsibility if the D-Day invasion had failed \nAfter serving ably as President of Columbia University and Supreme Commander of NATO\, Dwight Eisenhower did a superb job as president of the United States of America\, despite having no experience in politics whatsoever. After his retirement\, he was still called on to advise his young successor\, John F. Kennedy at moments of crisis. \nIke was one of the great Americans of all time. Eisenhower was widely admired and enormously respected by a public that really did not know him very well. Few Americans could tell you much about Ike’s parents\, his brothers\, his religious faith\, his relationship to his wife and his children. Did you know that Dwight Eisenhower was a superb athlete who once tackled Jim Thorpe? Or that he was quietly one of the most religious presidents in the history of the USA? \nThis multimedia presentation will serve as a fascinating biography illuminating the private life of one of the most admired Americans of all time.

SUMMARY:Tom Hanks
DESCRIPTION:If you were watching TV in 1980\, you might have noticed a curly haired 26-year-old named Tom Hanks starring in an innocuous new show about roommates who dressed up in drag in order to live in a women’s only residence. \nPLEASE NOTE: The program is FREE\, thanks to the sponsorship of our friends at BrightStar! SUMMARY:The Doolittle Raid - Flying Into Greatness
DESCRIPTION:The Doolittle Raid: America Fights Back\n \nAfter the deadly surprise attack on Pearl Harbor\, the USA wanted. Pres. Roosevelt knew that it would inevitably be a long war when we took on the forces of the Japanese Army and Navy. Our forces were insufficient before the devastating attack on Hawaii.  nonetheless\, FDR wanted to send a strong\, clear\, and unmistakable message to the Japanese: the United States WOULD fight back. \n An Unexpected Plan\nCol. Jimmy Doolitte volunteered to lead a group of raiders on one of the most  audacious attacks of all time. The plan was to drop bombs on Tokyo in the middle of the daytime. The Japanese people have been told that their island was invulnerable to an outside attack. If the Doolittle Raiders were successful\, their attack would be a shattering blow to the Japanese psyche. The only problem was that there was no practical way for American planes to attack the Japanese mainland. But utilizing American ingenuity\, full support of Pres. Roosevelt and Gen. George C Marshall\, and sheer bravado\, the Doolittle Raiders flew into greatness. \nThe heart stopping story of the Doolittle raid makes for drilling multimedia presentation offered  by master storyteller. \n

SUMMARY:Robert F. Kennedy - Fallen Leader
DESCRIPTION:Imagine If RFK Had Not Been Shot\n \n  \nThe election of 1968 was a tipping point in American History. Protests over the war in Vietnam. marches for Civil Rights\, demands for change roiled the country.  And then\, just months apart\, Martin Luther King and RFK were murdered.  The Democratic Convention of 1968 descended into chaos\, George Wallace entered the race and Richard Nixon squeaked out a victory. \nNow ask: what would have happened if RFK had not been murdered and had run against Nixon in the general election. We’ll assume that he would have won all the states won by Humphrey.  Then\, it seems reasonable to assume\, he would have won Illinois\, California and New Jersey\, which Humphrey lost despite their strong Democratic tilt.  With those states\, RFK would have been President. \nWhat gun control laws\, civil rights laws and environmental laws would he have championed?  How many men who would die in Vietnam would have lived?  The speculation is fascinating! \nThis probing multimedia biography will explore the growth and development of RFK personality and the amazing events that surrounded his short and meaningful life.

We will compare complementary shows from Broadway’s classic era (1943 – 1970) and Broadway’s modern era (1970 – 2018) \nThis allows to see how a classic like”The King And I”  relates to a modern show like  “Anastasia” \nYou will hear insider stories on each of the ten productions we will feature. Those of you who have heard my presentation on “Hamilton” will remember Cameron Faith Baron as the absolutely amazing singer who brought down the house with her renditions of  “Burn\,” “Satisfied” and “That Would Be Enough.” Wait until you hear her sing gorgeous songs from shows like “Come From Away\,” “Waitress\,” “Anastasia\, and “Carole King’s Beautiful!”  Since Cameron is booked for a musical starting in January\, this presentation will not be repeated next year! Do not miss it! \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Ten Greatest American Presidents
DESCRIPTION:The Ten Best American Presidents\n \nHow do we determine who were the greatest Presidents? \nOne recent poll of the American public disclosed that they believed Bill Clinton is the greatest President of all time! \nAnother recent poll\, this one only of Republicans showed that 5% of them considered George W. Bush was the greatest President of all time! \nSo…Let’s not ask the public! \nWhen historians are asked to compile their lists of the greatest Presidents\, they usually \nchoose Washington\, Lincoln\, and FDR as the best. (apologies to both Presidents Bush and Clinton!) \nBut after those three\, the lists become intriguing.  Does Truman belong in the pantheon?  How about Jefferson\, Jackson\, Theodore Roosevelt\, Reagan or Polk? Can a case be made on behalf of Madison\, Cleveland\, JFK or Wilson?  The debate is fun and the comparisons exciting!  I will prevent my intentionally provocative choices in this fast moving multimedia presentation. \n
