SUMMARY:Election 2018: Preview
DESCRIPTION:The midterm Election of 2018 has a unique urgency about the contests. After Donald Trump was elected president despite losing the popular vote by almost 3\,000\,000 votes\, our country has been going through unprecedented political turmoil. While it is unlikely that Democrats will take back the House of Representatives or gain seats in the United States Senate\, many seats are in play.  Here in Illinois\, we will be electing a new state government.  Traditional political thinking is that Gov. Bruce Rauner is perhaps the most endangered Republican incumbent governor in the nation.  This fascinating multimedia presentation will highlight the major races and trends and tell you what to watch for as the votes come in.  \n

SUMMARY:Over There: America In World War I
DESCRIPTION:It was “The War To End All Wars” and “The War To Make The World Safe For Democracy.” When Woodrow Wilson reversed the policy of American non-involvement in foreign wars\, he broke a tradition that had begun with George Washington. The role of America in World War I is still vitally important as our nation makes strategic decisions on both peace and war. \nThe effects of World War I are both obvious (the rise of the Nazi government in Germany) and less immediately apparent. As an example\, as a result of the involvement of America In World War I\, the groundwork was laid for the eventual establishment of Israel. \nOver There: America In World War I\nThis fast-moving and fascinating multimedia presentation will trace the roots of American involvement in “The Great War\,” including how it reshaped the major political parties. We will look at the military participation of American troops fighting on European soil. As we look at the effects of The Great War on the American home front after the Doughboys returned\, we  will look at length at the peace process and how it laid the groundwork for the rise of Adolph Hitler and the start of World War II \nPLEASE NOTE: The program is free to the public!

SUMMARY:History vs. The Movies - The Bridge on the River Kwai
DESCRIPTION:The Bridge on the River Kwai  Is One of the Greatest World War II Movies. Is It Accurate?\n \nThe Bridge on the River Kwai is a masterpiece of filmmaking. The story concerns British soldiers\, captured by the Japanese during the second world war\, being ordered to build a bridge to connect a vital railway link to help the Japanese army . The British commanding officer at first resisted\, but then decided that it would be good for his men’s morale to help build a bridge that would last forever. Meanwhile\, a guerrilla team led by an American Navy man who had been held in the camp and then escaped\, track their way through a thick jungle in order to try and destroy the bridge. \nThe film is based on a book  that purported to tell the true story. When the movie premiered\, surviving members of the British POW  contingent that built the actual bridge bitterly contested this story. In the movie for action\, the British commander is seen as collaborating with the Japanese commanding officer and ordering that the bridge be built to the highest possible specifications. While there is no denying  that the movie is brilliantly acted\, perfectly written and filmed in a memorable style\, many questions continue to remain about whether it tells the true story. \nIn this fast and fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will compare the historical events with the cinematic portrayal. This mesmerizing story is not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Tom Hanks
DESCRIPTION:If you were watching TV in 1980\, you might have noticed a curly haired 26 year old named Tom Hanks starring in an innocuous new show about roommates who dressed up in drag in order to live in a women’s only residence. How could we imagine the silly star of “Bosom Buddies” would go on to become of the greatest stars in the entire history of the movies? Tom Hanks’ long career has led him to be compared with the great Jimmy Stewart – and the comparison seems more accurate with each passing year. \nLike Jimmy Stewart\, Tom Hanks has starred in almost every genre of movie. Hanks has been a smash doing comedy\, (“Splash” “Big”) drama (“Saving Private Ryan\,” “The Post”) and been a leading man in romantic films (“You’ve Got Mail.” “Sleepless In Seattle) Hanks has starred in historical epics (“Sully\, Apollo 13”) and has won two Oscars amidst his five nominations. Clearly Tom Hanks has built a legendary career\, appearing in almost eighty films. And at only 61\, he has the potential to keep working for a long time! \nPlease join us for this great multimedia presentation on the life and career of Tom Hanks. PLEASE NOTE: Registration is required..please contact the venue for information and assistance! \n

SUMMARY:Who Killed JFK – Historian Presents a Modern Analysis
DESCRIPTION: Who Killed JFK?\n I’ll Tell You! \n \nThe murder of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked the nation. A suspect was quickly arrested and subsequently murdered. President Lyndon Johnson appointed a blue ribbon committee – the Warren Commission – to answer the question: who killed JFK? \nTheir conclusion was that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. Immediately\, the public was skeptical. Stephen King described Oswald as “a semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur.” How could such an insignificant loser pull off such a dastardly crime? And why did Jack Ruby\, accused of being a Mob member\, kill Oswald? \nWe have been through with whispered knowledge of conspiracies and confessions and coverups. And so the public has asked for an explanation of the “magic bullet.” \nAnd the contradictory witness statements. \nAnd Oswald’s shadowy past. \nAnd all of the “secret files.” \nAnd all of the conspiracy theories. \nAnd all of the “mysterious deaths” associated with the assassination? \nBooks and articles\, movies and documentaries have raised in innumerable questions about who killed JFK. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis\nSo who killed JFK? I will attempt to answer as many of these questions as possible. First I will attempt to separate historical fact from theory & speculation. Second\, I will show what the historical record actually indicates happened. We have access to much more information today then the Warren Commission had in 1963/4 or the House of Representatives had in 1977. Third\, we will examine what modern computer forensics can tell us about the crime. For instance\, the Warren Commission had access to the “Zapruder Film.”  Today\, we can use computers to enhance and analyze the film. We can use modern technology to analyze the path of each of the bullets that were fired. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis \nAnd we can use computers to isolate the mysterious sounds captured by a Dallas motorcycle patrolman.  In 1977\, the House of Representatives believed that the recording showed four shots fired in Dealy Plaza.  The National Academy of Science\, among many other groups\, have taken the same sound recordings and used state-of-the-art technology to analyze them. What do we know now? \nYou may not agree with my conclusions\, but you will definitely learn a lot and come away with a new perspective about the historical record of who killed JFK. \nBONUS! Click Here to read how one of JFK’s Secret Service agents saved the life of Harry Truman – TWICE!

SUMMARY:Hizzoner - Richard J. Daley\, The Mayor Of Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Richard J. Daley was the Mayor of Chicago for 21 years.\nThe Legacy Of Richard J. Daley\nHis legacy is complex and his accomplishments controversial\, substantial\, and long-lasting. \nA poll of professional historians named Richard J. Daley as the sixth most effective mayor in the history of the United States. \nDr. Martin Luther King Jr. saw Mayor Daley as the embodiment of segregation and racism. \nRichard J. Daley’s methods were not democratic but White Chicago grew and prospered under his leadership. Richard J. Daley’s early life reads like a Horatio Alger story. He was the grandson of a butcher. He was the son of a sheet metal worker.  Richard J. Daley sold newspapers\, worked in the stockyards\, and made deliveries. He worked his way through school during the depression\, taking night classes to learn clerical skills and then a law degree. \n He worked his way up through the Chicago political machine\, beginning as a Democratic Precinct captain. He was actually elected as a Republican to the state legislature\, but quickly switched parties. He worked with then Gov. Adlai Stevenson and worked his way up through the ranks of the Democratic Party. His election as mayor cemented his power in Chicago. Whether he was overseeing the massive building projects in downtown Chicago\, fighting against the efforts of Martin Luther King to integrate the city\, battling protesters at the 1968 Democratic convention\, or building a party infrastructure that would last well beyond his lifetime\, Richard J. Daley led an extraordinary life. \nIn this fast-paced multimedia presentation\, we will delve into the personal background and relationships of Chicago’s Mayor Richard J. Daley. We will look at his complex\, controversial\, and contradictory reputation for effectiveness and repression. You will come away with a deeper understanding – if not a different opinion – of Mayor Richard J. Daley.

SUMMARY:Richard J. To Rahm: Modern Mayors Of Chicago
DESCRIPTION:For two tumultuous decades\, Richard J Daley was indisputably the all powerful mayor of the city of Chicago. From 1955 until 1976\, his name was synonymous with “The City That Works.” At times\, it seemed as if he would be mayor for ever. When he died very suddenly\, the city was shocked to learn that there was no clear-cut successor outlined in city ordinances! For a full week\, it was not clear from either a legal or a political standpoint who actually had succeeded him as mayor. \n  \nIn this fascinating and unique multimedia series\, we will look at the colorful\, charismatic\, controversial men and woman who served as mayor of Chicago after the death of  long time Mayor Richard J Daley. Jane Byrne was the first woman to be mayor but her quirky personality undercut her idiosyncratic efforts at political reform. Chicago’s first African-American mayor\, Harold Washington was initially elected by a bitterly divided electorate. Despite ongoing battles with the obstinate City Council\, he then won a crushing reelection victory. Washington’s attempts to change the way Chicago does business ended abruptly with his death in office early in his second term. Richard M Daley wanted to move Chicago into becoming a technological city as opposed to an industrial mecca. Although he served as mayor longer than his father\, the constant controversies\, scandals\, and arrests of his allies marred the legacy of a mayor who rebuilt Chicago’s image. \nRichard M. Daley served as mayor even longer than his father did!  The significant accomplishments of his first two terms were obscured by a growing number of serious scandals during the later years of his reign. \nWith Mayor Rahm Emanuel under fire\, facing calls to resign\, it is fascinating to look at the varied life stories\, unique elections and mixed records of the men and woman who have guided Chicago since the death of Richard J. Daley.

SUMMARY:Holiday Inn The Irving Berlin Musical
DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate the holidays with the music of the incomparable Irving Berlin! \n “Holiday Inn” is a brand-new stage adaptation of the timeless 1942 Irving Berlin omnibus musical movie. That classic film starred Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby. The original “Holiday Inn” movie\, from Paramount Productions\, gloriously featured some of Irving Berlin’s best holiday-themed songs. The unforgettable score included\, “White Christmas\,”  “Easter Parade” “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve\,” & “Happy Holidays \nThe original film\, while wonderful\, is also problematic. It features a cringe-worthy blackface number\, a few songs that are just duds\, and a few racial stereotypes that are just awful. These elements can make the film hard to watch – and harder still to introduce to young audiences/ \nIn 2016\, Broadway showcased a brand new\, reimagined stage version of Holiday Inn!  In this fast-moving and music filled presentation\, will examine the backstory of both the film and the “new Irving Berlin” musical. As a special treat will see rare clips of the Broadway production. The musical’s producers kept the original premise\, dropped the blackface (thank heavens!) axed the poor songs and added other great Irving Berlin melodies including “Heat Wave” and “Cheek To Cheek.” This reimagined musical is a total delight!  Join us to celebrate Irving Berlin and “Holiday Inn!” \nIf you are a fan of Irving Berlin\, Broadway musicals\, or you just want to smile and soak up the holiday spirit\, you definitely do not want to miss this presentation!

Daley.
