SUMMARY:Richard J. To Rahm: Modern Mayors Of Chicago
DESCRIPTION:For two tumultuous decades\, Richard J Daley was indisputably the all powerful mayor of the city of Chicago. From 1955 until 1976\, his name was synonymous with “The City That Works.” At times\, it seemed as if he would be mayor for ever. When he died very suddenly\, the city was shocked to learn that there was no clear-cut successor outlined in city ordinances! For a full week\, it was not clear from either a legal or a political standpoint who actually had succeeded him as mayor. \n  \nIn this fascinating and unique multimedia series\, we will look at the colorful\, charismatic\, controversial men and woman who served as mayor of Chicago after the death of  long time Mayor Richard J Daley. Jane Byrne was the first woman to be mayor but her quirky personality undercut her idiosyncratic efforts at political reform. Chicago’s first African-American mayor\, Harold Washington was initially elected by a bitterly divided electorate. Despite ongoing battles with the obstinate City Council\, he then won a crushing reelection victory. Washington’s attempts to change the way Chicago does business ended abruptly with his death in office early in his second term. Richard M Daley wanted to move Chicago into becoming a technological city as opposed to an industrial mecca. Although he served as mayor longer than his father\, the constant controversies\, scandals\, and arrests of his allies marred the legacy of a mayor who rebuilt Chicago’s image. \nRichard M. Daley served as mayor even longer than his father did!  The significant accomplishments of his first two terms were obscured by a growing number of serious scandals during the later years of his reign. \nWith Mayor Rahm Emanuel under fire\, facing calls to resign\, it is fascinating to look at the varied life stories\, unique elections and mixed records of the men and woman who have guided Chicago since the death of Richard J. Daley.

SUMMARY:Holiday Inn The Irving Berlin Musical
DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate the holidays with the music of the incomparable Irving Berlin! \n “Holiday Inn” is a brand-new stage adaptation of the timeless 1942 Irving Berlin omnibus musical movie. That classic film starred Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby. The original “Holiday Inn” movie\, from Paramount Productions\, gloriously featured some of Irving Berlin’s best holiday-themed songs. The unforgettable score included\, “White Christmas\,”  “Easter Parade” “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve\,” & “Happy Holidays \nThe original film\, while wonderful\, is also problematic. It features a cringe-worthy blackface number\, a few songs that are just duds\, and a few racial stereotypes that are just awful. These elements can make the film hard to watch – and harder still to introduce to young audiences/ \nIn 2016\, Broadway showcased a brand new\, reimagined stage version of Holiday Inn!  In this fast-moving and music filled presentation\, will examine the backstory of both the film and the “new Irving Berlin” musical. As a special treat will see rare clips of the Broadway production. The musical’s producers kept the original premise\, dropped the blackface (thank heavens!) axed the poor songs and added other great Irving Berlin melodies including “Heat Wave” and “Cheek To Cheek.” This reimagined musical is a total delight!  Join us to celebrate Irving Berlin and “Holiday Inn!” \nIf you are a fan of Irving Berlin\, Broadway musicals\, or you just want to smile and soak up the holiday spirit\, you definitely do not want to miss this presentation!

SUMMARY:Barry's Best Of Broadway
DESCRIPTION:As a professional cultural Historian (and a self-described Broadway fanatic) I have actually seen well over 200 performances on Broadway! \nI truly love going to the theater in New York City! Accordingly\, I make several trips a year to Manhattan just to see what’s new on Broadway! In my home\, I host a Tony Awards Show party the way many men host a Super Bowl party! (I am not kidding – I cook for two days and we even get dressed up!) \nBarry’s Best Of Broadway\nI am so excited to offer an exciting new program featuring the stories and songs of some of my favorite Broadway musicals of all time. We will compare complementary shows from Broadway’s classic era (1943 – 1970) and Broadway’s modern era (1970 – 2018) \nThis allows to see how a classic like”The King And I”  relates to a modern show like  “Anastasia” \nYou will hear insider stories on each of the ten productions we will feature. In addition\, I will talk about the cultural importance of the musical and\, of course\, let you see and hear performances of some of the greatest songs from Broadway. However\, I have a very special feature that I am delighted to announce: we will have live renditions of some of the music! \nLive Music\nAs a special treat – we will have live performances of some of the songs\, performed by the amazing soloist Cameron Faith Baron. Those of you who have heard my presentation on “Hamilton” will remember Cameron Faith Baron as the absolutely amazing singer who brought down the house with her renditions of  “Burn\,” “Satisfied” and “That Would Be Enough.” Wait until you hear her sing gorgeous songs from shows like  “She Loves Me” and Carole King’s Beautiful! You are in for a treat! \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Declaration of Independence – America's Purpose Statement
DESCRIPTION:The Declaration Of Independence – America’s Purpose Statement\nIt was a moment that changed the history of the world forever. Throughout recorded time\, there had been innumerable revolutions\, revolts\, and separatist movements. But never had such a group of educated men decided to place the context of their revolution in the scope of human rights and do so with a written document that inspires people to this day. The bold committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence\, primarily Thomas Jefferson\, Benjamin Franklin\, and John Adams  understood that the revolution was about something more profound than simply political rights or taxation. They understood the importance of the moment.  Drawing on the natural rights of men\, they made the American Revolution a struggle for the concepts of equality and democracy. They saw a higher purpose for their actions. With a major American city under siege and occupied by soldiers their very lives were on the line. Yet the Continental Congress stood their ground by approving a document that contained the most important sentence ever written by an American.  The thrilling events that led to the Declaration of Independence and its actual meaning and influence on America will come to life in this exciting multimedia presentation. \nWe will focus on the importance of the Declaration of Independence. We will see how it has inspired and motivated generations of Americans.  In addition\, we will see how Abraham Lincoln elevated it in the minds of the American people.

In the 1940s\, Rita Hayworth was one of the most popular movie stars of her time. \nAt the height of her fame\, she married two of the most famous men in the world. First\, she accepted a proposal from the brilliant Orson Welles. They seemed like the ultimate Hollywood gamor/power couple. SUMMARY:Who Killed JFK – Historian Presents a Modern Analysis
DESCRIPTION: Who Killed JFK?\n I’ll Tell You! \n \nThe murder of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked the nation. A suspect was quickly arrested and subsequently murdered. President Lyndon Johnson appointed a blue ribbon committee – the Warren Commission – to answer the question: who killed JFK? \nTheir conclusion was that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. Immediately\, the public was skeptical. Stephen King described Oswald as “a semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur.” How could such an insignificant loser pull off such a dastardly crime? And why did Jack Ruby\, accused of being a Mob member\, kill Oswald? \nWe have been through with whispered knowledge of conspiracies and confessions and coverups. And so the public has asked for an explanation of the “magic bullet.” \nAnd the contradictory witness statements. \nAnd Oswald’s shadowy past. \nAnd all of the “secret files.” \nAnd all of the conspiracy theories. \nAnd all of the “mysterious deaths” associated with the assassination? \nBooks and articles\, movies and documentaries have raised in innumerable questions about who killed JFK. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis\nSo who killed JFK? I will attempt to answer as many of these questions as possible. First I will attempt to separate historical fact from theory & speculation. Second\, I will show what the historical record actually indicates happened. We have access to much more information today then the Warren Commission had in 1963/4 or the House of Representatives had in 1977. Third\, we will examine what modern computer forensics can tell us about the crime. For instance\, the Warren Commission had access to the “Zapruder Film.”  Today\, we can use computers to enhance and analyze the film. We can use modern technology to analyze the path of each of the bullets that were fired. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis \nAnd we can use computers to isolate the mysterious sounds captured by a Dallas motorcycle patrolman.  In 1977\, the House of Representatives believed that the recording showed four shots fired in Dealy Plaza.  The National Academy of Science\, among many other groups\, have taken the same sound recordings and used state-of-the-art technology to analyze them. What do we know now? \nYou may not agree with my conclusions\, but you will definitely learn a lot and come away with a new perspective about the historical record of who killed JFK. \nBONUS! Click Here to read how one of JFK’s Secret Service agents saved the life of Harry Truman – TWICE!

SUMMARY:The Mafia And The Building Of Las Vegas
DESCRIPTION:Fabulous Las Vegas has gone through several fascinating eras! It was a desert town that grew when the railroads came through. To accommodate the railroad workers\, a wide open culture of brothels\, saloons and gambling developed in the dusty desert outpost. \nIn the 1940s\, Bugsy Siegel convinced the Mafia leaders of New York City that the obscure Nevada city would be the perfect spot to build a fabulous a resort and casino that would serve two important purposes for La Casa Nostra – it would make huge amounts of money and it would serve as a clearinghouse to launder money made in illegal activities.  The fantastic Flamingo \n \nhotel was the result. It opened the door to the transformation of Las Vegas and shifting alliances\, strategies and leadership in the Mob. \nWe will explore the colorful personalities (including the Frank Sinatra and his cronies\, the  Rat Pack) \, strategic alliances and unexpected twists and turns that allowed the Mob to make Las Vegas a mecca for entertainment \n \ngambling and adult fun – until the law caught up with them.

SUMMARY:Wallis Simpson (American Royalty Series)
DESCRIPTION:The King of England abdicated his throne in order to be with “the woman I love.” Some people see it as the most romantic gestures in history. Others see his marriage to a twice divorceed\, promiscuous woman from Baltimore as the symptom of a weak man under the spell of a domineering woman who shared his passion for drinking\, luxury and the high life.  \nWallis Simpson is a complicated woman whose life is shrouded in controversy. As an American who marrieed into the British royal family\, she was an object of both admiration and derision. Certainly her role in leading to a Constitutional crisis in Great Britain is one of the most unique stories in English history! \nIn this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will look at the unusual personal  history of Wallis Simpson before she met the future King Edward. Then we’ll look at the oddly compelling relationship between the lightweight King and the aspirational divorcee from Maryland.  \nThe story will captivate you as we examine how the relationship between Edward and Wallis opened a chain of events that would unexpectedly bring Elizabeth into position to become the future Queen of England. And we will delve deeply into how their support of Hitler caused them to become pariahs and exiles!

And that record definitely contains some extremely surprising omissions.   In this fun and fast multimedia presentation\, we will look at which highly regarded actors \nPeter O’Toole As Alan Swan in “My Favorite Year \nhave never won the Academy award. We will not be considering one specific film performance but\, rather\, the larger question of why a great body of work never yielded an Oscar. How did great actors from Hollywood’s golden past such as Peter O’Toole\, Cary Grant\, & Richard Burton never win an Oscar? And how has the Academy award escaped actors working today such as  Leonardo DiCaprio\, Johnny Depp\, and Harrison Ford who have made some of the most highly acclaimed films ever? Don’t miss this fun presentation!
