SUMMARY:Barry's Best Of Broadway
DESCRIPTION:As a professional cultural Historian (and a self-described Broadway fanatic) I have actually seen well over 200 performances on Broadway! \nI truly love going to the theater in New York City! Accordingly\, I make several trips a year to Manhattan just to see what’s new on Broadway! In my home\, I host a Tony Awards Show party the way many men host a Super Bowl party! (I am not kidding – I cook for two days and we even get dressed up!) \nBarry’s Best Of Broadway\nI am so excited to offer an exciting new program featuring the stories and songs of some of my favorite Broadway musicals of all time. We will compare complementary shows from Broadway’s classic era (1943 – 1970) and Broadway’s modern era (1970 – 2018) \nThis allows you to see how a classic like “The King And I”  relates to a modern show like  “Anastasia” or how “South Pacific” and “Hamilton” are related. \nYou will hear insider stories on each of the ten productions we will feature. In addition\, I will talk about the cultural importance of the musical and\, of course\, let you see and hear performances of some of the greatest songs from Broadway. However\, I have a very special feature that I am delighted to announce: we will have live renditions of some of the music! \nLive Music\nAs a very special treat – we will have live performances of some of the songs\, performed by the amazing young soloist Cameron Faith Baron. Those of you who have heard my presentation on “Hamilton” will remember Cameron Faith Baron as the absolutely amazing singer who brought down the house with her renditions of  “Burn\,” “Satisfied” and “That Would Be Enough.” Wait until you hear her sing gorgeous songs from shows like “Come From Away\,” “Waitress\,” “Anastasia\, and “Carole King’s Beautiful!”  Since Cameron is booked for a musical starting in January\, this presentation will not be repeated next year! Do not miss it! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tom Hanks
DESCRIPTION:If you were watching TV in 1980\, you might have noticed a handsome\, curly haired 26-year-old named Tom Hanks starring in an innocuous new show about roommates who dressed up in drag in order to live in a women’s only residence. How could we imagine the silly star of “Bosom Buddies” would go on to become of the greatest stars in the entire history of the movies? Tom Hanks’ long career has led him to be compared with the great Jimmy Stewart – and the comparison seems more accurate with each passing year. \nLike Jimmy Stewart\, Tom Hanks has starred in almost every genre of movie. Hanks has been a smash doing comedy\, (“Splash” “Big”) drama (“Saving Private Ryan\,” “The Post\,” “Philadelphia”) and been a leading man in romantic films (“You’ve Got Mail.” “Sleepless In Seattle) Hanks has starred in historical epics (“Sully\,” “Bridge Of Spies\,” Apollo 13″) and has won two Oscars amidst his five nominations. Clearly\, Tom Hanks has built a legendary career\, appearing in almost eighty films. And at only 61\, he has the potential to keep working for a long time! \nPlease join us for this great multimedia presentation on the life and career of Tom Hanks.  \n

SUMMARY:Grace Kelly - American Royalty

Her work on screen speaks for itself. Behind the scenes\, her love life was tumultuous. She had affairs with Gable\, Cooper\, Crosby\, Holden and others – to the point where the studio had to quash “homewrecker” stories. \nTo the public\, Grace Kelly was referred to as “Hollywood Royalty. SUMMARY:The Declaration of Independence – America's Purpose Statement
DESCRIPTION:The Declaration Of Independence – America’s Purpose Statement\nIt was a moment that changed the history of the world forever. Throughout recorded time\, there had been innumerable revolutions\, revolts\, and separatist movements. But never had such a group of educated men decided to place the context of their revolution in the scope of human rights and do so with a written document that inspires people to this day. The bold committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence\, primarily Thomas Jefferson\, Benjamin Franklin\, and John Adams  understood that the revolution was about something more profound than simply political rights or taxation. They understood the importance of the moment.  Drawing on the natural rights of men\, they made the American Revolution a struggle for the concepts of equality and democracy. They saw a higher purpose for their actions. With a major American city under siege and occupied by soldiers their very lives were on the line. Yet the Continental Congress stood their ground by approving a document that contained the most important sentence ever written by an American.  The thrilling events that led to the Declaration of Independence and its actual meaning and influence on America will come to life in this exciting multimedia presentation. \nWe will focus on the importance of the Declaration of Independence. We will see how it has inspired and motivated generations of Americans.  In addition\, we will see how Abraham Lincoln elevated it in the minds of the American people.

SUMMARY:Rita Hayworth - American Royalty
DESCRIPTION:The pin-up photo of Rita Hayworth hung above the bunks of World War II American soldiers\, airmen and sailors and airmen all over the world. She was called “The Love Goddess” and Fred Astaire declared her his best dance partner. In the 1940s\, Rita Hayworth was one of the most popular movie stars of her time. \nAt the height of her fame\, she married two of the most famous men in the world. First\, she accepted a proposal from the brilliant Orson Welles. They seemed like the ultimate Hollywood gamor/power couple. It ended unhappily\, with offers of bribes\, threats of kidnapping and back-and-forth rancor in newspapers all around the globe. \nRita Hayworth returned to film\, but her career evaporated in a haze of alcaholism and strange personality swings. The latter were finally diagnosed as the little known malady called Alzheimer’s Disease. \nIn this multimedia presentation we will celebrate the terrific talent of Rita Hayworth as seen in her classic movies. We will also explore the strange\, unexpected and often sad story of the private life of the glamorous “Love Goddess\,” the remarkable Rita Hayworth

SUMMARY:Who Killed JFK – Historian Presents a Modern Analysis
DESCRIPTION: Who Killed JFK?\n I’ll Tell You! \n \nThe murder of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked the nation. A suspect was quickly arrested and subsequently murdered. President Lyndon Johnson appointed a blue ribbon committee – the Warren Commission – to answer the question: who killed JFK? \nTheir conclusion was that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. Immediately\, the public was skeptical. Stephen King described Oswald as “a semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur.” How could such an insignificant loser pull off such a dastardly crime? And why did Jack Ruby\, accused of being a Mob member\, kill Oswald? \nWe have been through with whispered knowledge of conspiracies and confessions and coverups. And so the public has asked for an explanation of the “magic bullet.” \nAnd the contradictory witness statements. \nAnd Oswald’s shadowy past. \nAnd all of the “secret files.” \nAnd all of the conspiracy theories. \nAnd all of the “mysterious deaths” associated with the assassination? \nBooks and articles\, movies and documentaries have raised in innumerable questions about who killed JFK. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis\nSo who killed JFK? I will attempt to answer as many of these questions as possible. First I will attempt to separate historical fact from theory & speculation. Second\, I will show what the historical record actually indicates happened. We have access to much more information today then the Warren Commission had in 1963/4 or the House of Representatives had in 1977. Third\, we will examine what modern computer forensics can tell us about the crime. For instance\, the Warren Commission had access to the “Zapruder Film.”  Today\, we can use computers to enhance and analyze the film. We can use modern technology to analyze the path of each of the bullets that were fired. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis \nAnd we can use computers to isolate the mysterious sounds captured by a Dallas motorcycle patrolman.  In 1977\, the House of Representatives believed that the recording showed four shots fired in Dealy Plaza.  The National Academy of Science\, among many other groups\, have taken the same sound recordings and used state-of-the-art technology to analyze them. What do we know now? \nYou may not agree with my conclusions\, but you will definitely learn a lot and come away with a new perspective about the historical record of who killed JFK. \nBONUS! Click Here to read how one of JFK’s Secret Service agents saved the life of Harry Truman – TWICE!

SUMMARY:The Mafia And The Building Of Las Vegas
DESCRIPTION:Fabulous Las Vegas has gone through several fascinating eras! It was a desert town that grew when the railroads came through. To accommodate the railroad workers\, a wide open culture of brothels\, saloons and gambling developed in the dusty desert outpost. \nIn the 1940s\, Bugsy Siegel convinced the Mafia leaders of New York City that the obscure Nevada city would be the perfect spot to build a fabulous a resort and casino that would serve two important purposes for La Casa Nostra – it would make huge amounts of money and it would serve as a clearinghouse to launder money made in illegal activities.  The fantastic Flamingo \n \nhotel was the result. It opened the door to the transformation of Las Vegas and shifting alliances\, strategies and leadership in the Mob. \nWe will explore the colorful personalities (including the Frank Sinatra and his cronies\, the  Rat Pack) \, strategic alliances and unexpected twists and turns that allowed the Mob to make Las Vegas a mecca for entertainment \n \ngambling and adult fun – until the law caught up with them.

SUMMARY:Wallis Simpson (American Royalty Series)
DESCRIPTION:The King of England abdicated his throne in order to be with “the woman I love.” Some people see it as the most romantic gestures in history. Others see his marriage to a twice divorceed\, promiscuous woman from Baltimore as the symptom of a weak man under the spell of a domineering woman who shared his passion for drinking\, luxury and the high life.  \nWallis Simpson is a complicated woman whose life is shrouded in controversy. As an American who marrieed into the British royal family\, she was an object of both admiration and derision. Certainly her role in leading to a Constitutional crisis in Great Britain is one of the most unique stories in English history! \nIn this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will look at the unusual personal  history of Wallis Simpson before she met the future King Edward. Then we’ll look at the oddly compelling relationship between the lightweight King and the aspirational divorcee from Maryland.  \nThe story will captivate you as we examine how the relationship between Edward and Wallis opened a chain of events that would unexpectedly bring Elizabeth into position to become the future Queen of England. And we will delve deeply into how their support of Hitler caused them to become pariahs and exiles!

SUMMARY:Best Actors Never to Win an Oscar
DESCRIPTION:America has been in love with the movies for over 100 years. And every year the race for the Oscar is closely watched by movie fans around the world. Winning the Academy award connotes something special in the history of film. Movie buffs debate the winners and losers\, the snubs and the surprises.  But since the 1920s\, the Academy Awards have built a long historical record that we can examine. And that record definitely contains some extremely surprising omissions.   In this fun and fast multimedia presentation\, we will look at which highly regarded actors \nPeter O’Toole As Alan Swan in “My Favorite Year \nhave never won the Academy award. We will not be considering one specific film performance but\, rather\, the larger question of why a great body of work never yielded an Oscar. How did great actors from Hollywood’s golden past such as Peter O’Toole\, Cary Grant\, & Richard Burton never win an Oscar? And how has the Academy award escaped actors working today such as  Leonardo DiCaprio\, Johnny Depp\, and Harrison Ford who have made some of the most highly acclaimed films ever? SUMMARY:Rita Hayworth - American Royalty
DESCRIPTION:Rita Hayworth – American Royalty\nThe pin-up photo of Rita Hayworth hung above the bunks of World War II American soldiers\, airmen and sailors and airmen all over the world. After that marriage failed\, “The Love Goddess was wooed and pursued by one of the world’s wealthiest and most famous prines: the fabled Aly Khan. \nThe marriage of Hollywood’s sexiest star and the glamorous Muslim playboy\, socialite\, womanizer\, racehorse owner and jockey was a source of endless fascination by the press and public.

SUMMARY:Harding And Coolidge - Republican Presidents Of The 1920s
DESCRIPTION:After  World War I ended\, America turned away from the liberal progressive era of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and made a sharp turn toward conservatism. In 1920\, the Republicans nominated for president Warren G Harding\, an amiable Sen. from Ohio who promised “A return to normalcy.” For eight years the Republicans controlled the presidency\, Congress\, and the national debate. Within twelve  fascinating years the economy had gone from boom to bust and the “Roaring Twenties” had given way to the Great Depression. The seemingly perennial GOP majority evaporated with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Who were the Republican presidents whose pro-business\, low tax\, conservative presidencies led to an explosion and then the demolition of the American economy? They were very dissimilar in their backgrounds\, each with a fascinating back story that you will learn about in this unique multimedia presentation. \n Please Note: Registration is required for this program. SUMMARY:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges
DESCRIPTION:In a span of just seven years\, Preston Sturges had an unparalleled run of making some of the greatest American movies of all time.    \nThe films of Preston Sturges are absolutely unique\, unforgettable and utterly brilliant. However\, although his Hollywood career lasted over 35 years\, the movies Preston Sturges wrote and directed between 1938-1945 alone were enough to cement his reputation as one of the most influential directors and respected screenwriters of all time.  After becoming the first screenwriter of the talking movie era to be allowed to direct his own films\,  Preston Sturges created a unique body of work that still delights and challenges and amuses audiences 80 years later. Furthermore\, his personal life was as unexpected\, unique and memorable as his movies! \nYou may be asking yourself: “So who is this guy and why have I never heard of him?” My response is: “Challenge yourself to become enthralled with the filmmaker whose name you may not know but whose movies are unforgettable!”

SUMMARY:Movies About Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln On Film
DESCRIPTION:No American President has been portrayed on film more often than Abraham Lincoln! \nFrom the earliest days of silent movies\, Lincoln has been featured in more movies than all other Presidents combined. The most brilliant of these iconic performances can be seen in John Ford’s groundbreaking “Young Mr. Lincoln” starring Henry Fonda. Raymond Massey played Lincoln so often on stage\, movies\, and TV that George S. Kaufman famously observed: “[Raymond] Massey won’t be satisfied until he’s assassinated!” \nEven in contemporary films such as Spielberg’s “Lincoln\,” the myth of Honest Abe grows and evolves with each movie. In this insightful\, mesmerizing and nostalgic multimedia presentation\, you will see my work as a Lincoln scholar combined with my love of classic cinema! \nPLEASE NOTE: This program is FREE\, but registration is strongly recommended!
