SUMMARY:Presidential Debates
DESCRIPTION:Political polls in 1960 showed a race too close to call. One of the turning points that led to the victory of John F. Kennedy was his “victory” in a series of unprecedented televised debates with Richard Nixon. Before the debates\, JFK was slightly behind. After the first debate he took a slim lead that he never relinquished. While Kennedy and Nixon became the first Presidential candidates to ever debate\, they opened up public expectations about how campaigns would evolve. \nAlthough there was a 16 year gap between the very first Presidential debates and the 1976 Ford- Carter debates\, they have become significant fixtures in every subsequent election cycle. In some years (1960\, 1984) they were crucial; in other years they have mattered little. Nonetheless\, they draw huge audiences and invite intense media scrutiny. This multimedia presentation will present insights and analyses as we learn how and why Presidential debates matter.  \nJoin us for a fascinating look at the history of all the Presidential debates! \n

SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans simply do not know very much about the Revolutionary War.   \nAlthough certain images from the Revolutionary War are seared into our memory – Washington Crossing the Delaware  and the signing of the Declaration of Independence –  many people would be hard-pressed to name a major battle\, a leading general or even how the War For Independence ended.  Recent events in America have caused some to question whether we should even have statues of George Washington on public display. \nTHE REVOLUTIONARY WAR\n In this four-part series on the Revolutionary War we will examine why the freest and most prosperous colonials in the world decided to declare independence from a mother country that had protected them. We will look at the roots of the war\, the Declaration of Independence\, the early battles including Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill before transitioning into a longer look at the seven years of fighting necessary for America to begin its experiment in participatory democracy. We will also look at the amazing and diverse leaders who guided America. Benjamin Franklin\,James Monroe\, John Adams\, Paul Revere\, George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, and Alexander Hamilton will be some of the people whom we will meet. I encourage you to learn more about how America came to be!

SUMMARY:Jackie Robinson
DESCRIPTION: Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. The dramatic story of how Branch Rickey defied the baseball establishment by promoting to the major leagues the first African American players ever to walk on the field is a fascinating story. \nHowever\, Jackie Robinson is more than just a symbol of integration.  First\, he was a great baseball player. A great\, great player. And then we have to recognize that Jackie Robinson was a decidedly complex and interesting man both on and off the field. As the baseball overlords knew\, very few men could have stood up against the pressure that he faced.   Jackie Robinson’s passionate involvement in the civil rights movement\, his advocacy of minority entrepreneurship\, his involvement in the political world as well as the business world each create a clearer and more complete picture of an important man. \nWe will examine both the famous story of his rise to the major leagues as well as the private story of what he had to overcome on the path to sports greatness\, including his court-martial during World War II for standing up to racism!. \n Important note: This event is free\, but registration is required. Please Reserve your seat ASAP!

SUMMARY:Wallis Simpson (American Royalty Series)
DESCRIPTION:The King of England abdicated his throne in order to be with “the woman I love.” Some people see it as the most romantic gestures in history. Others see his marriage to a twice divorceed\, promiscuous woman from Baltimore as the symptom of a weak man under the spell of a domineering woman who shared his passion for drinking\, luxury and the high life.  \nWallis Simpson is a complicated woman whose life is shrouded in controversy. As an American who marrieed into the British royal family\, she was an object of both admiration and derision. Certainly her role in leading to a Constitutional crisis in Great Britain is one of the most unique stories in English history! \nIn this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will look at the unusual personal  history of Wallis Simpson before she met the future King Edward. Then we’ll look at the oddly compelling relationship between the lightweight King and the aspirational divorcee from Maryland.  \nThe story will captivate you as we examine how the relationship between Edward and Wallis opened a chain of events that would unexpectedly bring Elizabeth into position to become the future Queen of England. And we will delve deeply into how their support of Hitler caused them to become pariahs and exiles!

SUMMARY:Alfred Hitchcock
DESCRIPTION:Sir Alfred Hitchcock directed some of the greatest suspense films of all time. Although his reputation has suffered somewhat because of the slasher/horror films he made in the early 1960s\, his work in the 1940s and 50s presented some of the most complex\, fascinating\, and suspenseful films ever made. His life and amazing body of work are highlighted in this multimedia presentation. \nBefore “Psycho” and “The Birds\,” Hitchcock created some of the most memorable suspense films ever made. Often starring Cary Grant or James Stewart opposite an icy blonde like Kim Novak or Grace Kelly\, the Golden Era of Hitchcock films were mysterious\, exciting\, and clever movies packed with tension.  \nConsider the masterpiece “Rear Window.” Stewart plays a globe-trotting photographer who is confined to his apartment with a broken leg. He spends all day staring at the apartments across the courtyard\, making up stories to explain the actions of the residents. But when he suspects that one of them has committed a murder\, his obsession becomes overwhelming. He draws his girlfriend and his nurse into believing his theory. Hitchcock’s mastery can be shown when you realize we\, the audience\, do not actually know if a murder took place at all! But for two hours we lean forward\, anxiously waiting to find out if what we think we have seen is what really happened! \nAlfred Hitchcock directed “Vertigo” which is considered by some critics to be the best movie ever made! “North By Northwest” contains two of the most iconic shots in cinema history! Who can forget Cary Grant running through a field being chased by a crop duster or the mad scramble across Mount Rushmore? Hitchcock’s style\, understated wit\, and clever personal cameos all worked together to create a unique and wonderful body of work. So distinctive is the style of Alfred Hitchcock that all subsequent suspense films are inevitably compared to his work! \nWe will also explore the twisted mind and complex life of Alfred Hitchcock

SUMMARY:America's Purpose Statement: The Declaration Of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The most important sentence ever written by an American – a sentence which has inspired people in every part of the world – is found in America’s purpose statement!  Click here to read more. The legacy of Washington\, Hancock\, Franklin\, Jefferson\, Adams\, Hamilton and Paul Revere challenges us even today \n \nOn a stifling July day in 1776\, our Founding Fathers agreed to a document that was completely unique.  There had been many revolutions over the centuries\, but never had one begun with a philosophical purpose statement. Although the Declaration of Independence has no legal power\, it has become the guiding beacon for what America strove to become. As a nation we are a world leader in human rights and\, yet\, still a work in progress. \n \nIn this exciting multimedia presentation I will present the thrilling themes\, complex and charismatic personalities and exciting events that led to the most important moment in American history!

SUMMARY:Jimmy Carter
DESCRIPTION:Jimmy Carter was an enigma. \nA deeply religious Southern Baptist\, raised by a segregationist Father and an open spirited mother who nursed Black families without pay in southern Georgia\, Carter’s unique background made him hard to define and hard to understand. \nHe was a moralist as President\, Neither liberal nor conservative\, Jimmy Carter made few political friends and found himself isolated even from those in his own party. \nPresident Carter brimmed with self-confidence and a moral compass that told him what to do and whom to trust.  \nThe common perception of Carter is that he was a lousy President (except for the Camp David Accords) and our greatest ex-resident. The impact of the Carter Institute\, his many books\, his work in establishing Habitat For Humanity\, and his world travels as an ambassador of peace has made Carter more popular now than when he was President!  \nJoin is for a unique and insightful view into the background and career of Jimmy Carter!

SUMMARY:James Madison And James Monroe: Influential Founding Fathers
DESCRIPTION:Their names are similar; their life spans are almost identical and each was considered one of the most influential of the founding fathers. Yet despite their very different personalities\, philosophies\, and  achievements\, most Americans today would have a hard time distinguishing one from another. This despite the fact that one of them is the primary author of the Constitution (James Madison) and the other is one of the greatest heroes of the Battle of Trenton. (James Monroe)  each served as president of the United States and their presidencies were very different as well. \nWe will look at the far ranging influence of these two great men.  As their lives intersected with people like George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, Benjamin Franklin\, and John Adams\, each was to become  revered for their patriotism\, courage\, wisdom\, and enormous contributions to the growth of the new nation. \nPLEASE NOTE: This presentation is offered through the Deerfield Men’s Club and registration is required\,

SUMMARY:Movies About Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln On Film
DESCRIPTION:No American President has been portrayed on film more often than Abraham Lincoln! \nFrom the earliest days of silent movies\, Lincoln has been featured in more movies than all other Presidents combined. The most brilliant of these iconic performances can be seen in John Ford’s groundbreaking “Young Mr. Lincoln” starring Henry Fonda. Raymond Massey played Lincoln so often on stage\, movies\, and TV that George S. Kaufman famously observed: “[Raymond] Massey won’t be satisfied until he’s assassinated!” \nEven in contemporary films such as Spielberg’s “Lincoln\,” the myth of Honest Abe grows and evolves with each movie. In this insightful\, mesmerizing and nostalgic multimedia presentation\, you will see my work as a Lincoln scholar combined with my love of classic cinema!

DESCRIPTION:The Battle Of Trenton\nThe iconic image of George Washington’s little boat crossing the Delaware River is firmly ingrained deep in the consciousness of America. Many people remember\, in general terms\, that General Washington took his army on rickety boats across an ice filled river to attack the enemy around Christmas time. The image of Washington Crossing the Delaware is so powerful and memorable that it has been used in  advertising\, comics\,\nand every avenue of popular culture. \nA deeper look at the Battle of Trenton shows us that it is actually an unmistakable turning point\, not only in the American Revolutionary war\, but in the history of the world. Although the Declaration of Independence made a breathtaking statement on the rights of man\, without the military victory at the Battle of Trenton\, the Revolutionary war and the Declaration  would merely be obscure footnotes in world history. They would just be anecdotal evidence of another failed revolt. \nWashington’s battle plan was audacious and his leadership was inspiring. After enduring a harrowing crossing of an ice filled river in a sleet storm in the middle of the night\, Washington’s men had to suffer through a nine mile march in a blizzard.  And then\, in less than ninety dramatic moments\, the Revolution was saved. The battle of Trenton was the first fight General Washington had won and is still the most important. SUMMARY:George W. Bush
DESCRIPTION:Few Presidencies have been tested as fast and as hard as that of George W. Bush. (2000 – 2008) \nJust eight months after his extremely controversial election\, the USA came under foreign attack on September 11\, 2001. The young\, inexperienced President at first seemed overmatched. Then in two memorable responses\, one at Ground Zero and one during a nationally televised speech to Congress\, President Bush rose to the occasion of national unity. His approval ratings were at an all-time high and the nation seemed to be completely supportive of a war to end the terrorist group that had viciously murdered nearly 3\,000 Americans.  \nWithin just a few years\, the man who had been elected by the Republican Supreme Court after his brother and his Florida campaign manager counted the votes saw his popularity sink to an almost unimaginable level. After barely winning reelection in 2004\, Bush found support for his wars evaporating and his decision to ballon the debt while fighting a war\, cutting oversight on financial institutions\, and cutting taxes led to the worst recession since the Great Depression. President Bush left office as his party was trounced in a landslide and his popularity had cratered. \nThe fascinating story of President Bush is one you will not want to miss!

SUMMARY:South Pacific - A Multimedia Presentation on South Pacific
DESCRIPTION:South Pacific is one of the greatest works of musical theater ever created. The masterpiece by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein combines a unique and fascinating story of American nurses and GI on a remote island during World War II with an unforgettable score and powerful lyrics. Add in great costumes\, a beautiful set\, and fabulous staging and something amazing evolves right in front of the audience’s eyes. In this multimedia presentation on South Pacific will help you more fully appreciate this work of genius. \nHowever\, South Pacific is more than just a wonderful musical. The story is powerful as it launches a broadside against racism in America. Like Hamilton\, this is a work of genius that transcends the expectations of musical theater and attempts to influence the political discussion in the country. South Pacific is romantic\, suspenseful\, and often very funny. But\, at its core\, this was a personal statement against racism and prejudice by its extraordinary creators. Two different characters\, both white Americans realize that their love for non-white Asian people dooms any chance of returning to a bigoted America in the 1940s. Beloved by critics and the audience\, the show was nonetheless divisive and controversial with some conservatives! This multimedia presentation on South Pacific will reveal its authors’ motivations and intent. \nThis multimedia presentation traces the backstory of South Pacific\, beginning with author John O’Hara’s wartime experiences and brilliant book of short stories that became the basis for the musical. \nWe will look at excerpts from the stage musical and film versions as we explore the history and impact of a Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece of the Broadway stage. Come for the music and stay for the amazing story!

SUMMARY:Cole Porter - Risque Master Of American Music
DESCRIPTION:Cole Porter is one of the greatest songwriters in American history. His melodies were sublime. His lyrics were clever\, witty\, sophisticated\, original and naughty. Cole Porter was the ultimate European oriented sophisticate – yet he was born in tiny Peru\, Indiana! \nThe list of songs written by Porter includes some of the greatest entries in the great American Songbook!  Consider: \nLET’S DO IT (LET’S FALL IN LOVE) (1928) \n NIGHT AND DAY (1932) \nANYTHING GOES (1934) \n DON’T FENCE ME IN (1934) \nI GET A KICK OUT OF YOU (1934) \nBEGIN THE BEGUINE (1935) \n I’VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN (1936) \nIT’S DE-LOVELY (1936) \nPorter’s legacy was further assured by brilliant Broadway shows like “Kiss Me Kate” and “Can-Can.” But beneath the surface of this bon-vivant lay a tortured soul. Cole Porter lived in both psychic and physical pain much of his life. His life story\, his personality and his unforgettable music combine for a memorable multimedia presentation!

SUMMARY:Tom Hanks
DESCRIPTION:If you were watching TV in 1980\, you might have noticed a handsome\, curly haired 26-year-old named Tom Hanks starring in an innocuous new show about roommates who dressed up in drag in order to live in a women’s only residence. How could we imagine the silly star of “Bosom Buddies” would go on to become of the greatest stars in the entire history of the movies? Tom Hanks’ long career has led him to be compared with the great Jimmy Stewart – and the comparison seems more accurate with each passing year. \nLike Jimmy Stewart\, Tom Hanks has starred in almost every genre of movie. Hanks has been a smash doing comedy\, (“Splash” “Big”) drama (“Saving Private Ryan\,” “The Post\,” “Philadelphia”) and been a leading man in romantic films (“You’ve Got Mail.” “Sleepless In Seattle) Hanks has starred in historical epics (“Sully\,” “Bridge Of Spies\,” Apollo 13″) and has won two Oscars amidst his five nominations. Clearly\, Tom Hanks has built a legendary career\, appearing in almost eighty films. And at only 61\, he has the potential to keep working for a long time! \nPlease join us for this great multimedia presentation on the life and career of Tom Hanks.  \n

SUMMARY:TV in the 1980s
DESCRIPTION:If the 1970s\, comedies tented to be the ground breakers and dramas were mostly bland and formulaic.  TV  in the 1980s tended to be quite different. While there were important comedies\, most notably  The Cosby Show\, Cheers  and The Golden Girls\, for the most part TV comedies in the 1980s  were simply pleasant diversions like Alf\, The Wonder Years\, Perfect Strangers\, & Silver Spoons. \nAs we look at more deeplyTV in the 1980s\, we see dramas  began to show a much more modern style\, moving away from the  predictable\, bland  formulaic cop and doctor shows popular in the 1970s.Programs like  Hill Street Blues\, LA Law\, 30 Something\, & St. Elsewhere were each terrific in and of themselves. But their popular and artistic success also pointed to an evolution into a more mature era of television dramas. \n  \nFinally\, the 1980s where the heyday of must see evening television soaps. Falcon Crest\, Dallas\, Knots Landing & Dynasty garnered phenomenal ratings and mesmerized many viewers. This multimedia presentation will explore what we watched and why we watched it in a transitional decade for American television. \nCOST: \nI suggest a $5.00 donation. SUMMARY:George Gershwin
DESCRIPTION:In a very short career\, George Gershwin changed American music forever. He was one of the most beloved composers of music for Broadway. his songs and shows continue to be revived on the New York stage and in theaters around the world. The list of standards written by Gershwin is seemingly endless.  “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off * Nice Work If You Can Get It * Shall We Dance * and  “They Can’t Take That Away From Me * are just a sample of the many popular songs written by Gershwin; most with unforgettable\, urbane lyrics by his ferociously talented brother\, Ira. \nGeorge Gershwin continued to challenge himself  by creating music in challenging and unique styles. He wrote “Porgy and Bess” including the iconic “Summertime” in a blues style\, wrote the unforgettable “Rhapsody in Blue” fusing jazz and classical elements\, and music for ballet\, “An American In Paris.”  \nHe had just conquered Hollywood with his first movie musical\, the sublime “Shall We Dance” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers when he died of a brain tumor. The master of American music was just 38. \nIn this lively and fascinating multimedia presentation\, you will be amazed by the amazing biography\, unparalleled career and enduring legacy of George Gershwin. \n

SUMMARY:Understanding The Election Of 2008
DESCRIPTION:Understanding The Election Of 2008\nIf the election of 2008 had been written as a movie script\, it could not have been more exciting. We faced the possibility that we would elect the first woman to the presidency\, the first African-American to the presidency or perhaps one of America’s greatest war heroes to the presidency. The nomination battles were thrilling\, the personalities were oversized\, and just when it couldn’t seem to get any more fascinating\, Sen. McCain chose  Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate! \nIn this insightful\, nonpartisan multimedia presentation\, you will learn about the backgrounds of each of the campaigns and candidates in the election of 2008. You’ll learn the very different election strategies that each pursued. We will look at the role of technology\, social media\, race\, television\, and the debates as factors in deciding an election like no other. The election of 2008 provides us a fascinating glimpse into the future of campaigning.   \nWe’ll see how social media and voter tracking began to replace television advertising as a means of motivating voters.  This effort led to long lines of voters across the country. We’ll also examine how one party began to utilize restrictive voting laws as a desperate means to try and ensure victory through voter suppression. \nThe career politician and war hero hero against a candidate with a painfully thin resume; a vice-presidential candidate with a penchant for gaffes versus one seemingly in way over her head.  This presentation on the election of 2008 is not to be missed. \n

SUMMARY:The Election Of 1960
DESCRIPTION:The election of 1960 was one of the most dramatic elections in American history. until the halted recount in the election of 2000\, it was the closest  Presidential election in our lifetimes.  This riveting  multimedia presentation features amazing anecdotes\, entry insights\, and numerous fascinating film clips to help put this most momentous campaign into perspective. \nRichard Nixon was coming off of eight years as vice president to one of the most popular presidents of all time. He had experience in domestic and foreign-policy and was a veteran many tough campaigns. hitill very young\, he offered a new face for the Republican Party’s future. He became the first sitting vice president to earn his party’s nomination since John C Breckenridge exactly 100 years earlier! \n  \nJohn F. Kennedy was only a few years younger than Nixon and considered him a friend. JFK was seen as a lightweight in the Senate\, proposing no major legislation and often missing long stretches of time due to surgeries and hospitalizations. However he was a war hero\, handsome\, charismatic and a best-selling author. He had to defeat a number of older and better known Democrats to earn the nomination. \n  \nAnd then came the campaign for president! Nixon’s national reputation vs. Kennedy’s cool and charisma. With polls showing just a slight Nixon believed throughout the summer\, the two men agreed to something that had never happened before: a series of presidential debates. Those debates turned the course of the election and changed politics\, They demonstrated the importance of television in future campaigns. Throw into the mix the rest of Martin Luther King Jr.\, Nixon’s phlebitis\, Kennedy’s mafia connections\, mystery votes in Illinois and odd campaign choices by Nixon and you have the makings of a fascinating campaign! \n
