SUMMARY:South Pacific - A Multimedia Presentation on South Pacific
DESCRIPTION:South Pacific is one of the greatest works of musical theater ever created. The masterpiece by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein combines a unique and fascinating story of American nurses and GI on a remote island during World War II with an unforgettable score and powerful lyrics. Add in great costumes\, a beautiful set\, and fabulous staging and something amazing evolves right in front of the audience’s eyes. In this multimedia presentation on South Pacific will help you more fully appreciate this work of genius. \nHowever\, South Pacific is more than just a wonderful musical. The story is powerful as it launches a broadside against racism in America. Like Hamilton\, this is a work of genius that transcends the expectations of musical theater and attempts to influence the political discussion in the country. South Pacific is romantic\, suspenseful\, and often very funny. But\, at its core\, this was a personal statement against racism and prejudice by its extraordinary creators. Two different characters\, both white Americans realize that their love for non-white Asian people dooms any chance of returning to a bigoted America in the 1940s. Beloved by critics and the audience\, the show was nonetheless divisive and controversial with some conservatives! This multimedia presentation on South Pacific will reveal its authors’ motivations and intent. \nThis multimedia presentation traces the backstory of South Pacific\, beginning with author John O’Hara’s wartime experiences and brilliant book of short stories that became the basis for the musical. \nWe will look at excerpts from the stage musical and film versions as we explore the history and impact of a Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece of the Broadway stage. Come for the music and stay for the amazing story!

SUMMARY:Cole Porter - Risque Master Of American Music
DESCRIPTION:Cole Porter is one of the greatest songwriters in American history. His melodies were sublime. His lyrics were clever\, witty\, sophisticated\, original and naughty. Cole Porter was the ultimate European oriented sophisticate – yet he was born in tiny Peru\, Indiana! \nThe list of songs written by Porter includes some of the greatest entries in the great American Songbook!  Consider: \nLET’S DO IT (LET’S FALL IN LOVE) (1928) \n NIGHT AND DAY (1932) \nANYTHING GOES (1934) \n DON’T FENCE ME IN (1934) \nI GET A KICK OUT OF YOU (1934) \nBEGIN THE BEGUINE (1935) \n I’VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN (1936) \nIT’S DE-LOVELY (1936) \nPorter’s legacy was further assured by brilliant Broadway shows like “Kiss Me Kate” and “Can-Can.” But beneath the surface of this bon-vivant lay a tortured soul. Cole Porter lived in both psychic and physical pain much of his life. His life story\, his personality and his unforgettable music combine for a memorable multimedia presentation!

SUMMARY:Tom Hanks
DESCRIPTION:If you were watching TV in 1980\, you might have noticed a handsome\, curly haired 26-year-old named Tom Hanks starring in an innocuous new show about roommates who dressed up in drag in order to live in a women’s only residence. How could we imagine the silly star of “Bosom Buddies” would go on to become of the greatest stars in the entire history of the movies? Tom Hanks’ long career has led him to be compared with the great Jimmy Stewart – and the comparison seems more accurate with each passing year. \nLike Jimmy Stewart\, Tom Hanks has starred in almost every genre of movie. Hanks has been a smash doing comedy\, (“Splash” “Big”) drama (“Saving Private Ryan\,” “The Post\,” “Philadelphia”) and been a leading man in romantic films (“You’ve Got Mail.” “Sleepless In Seattle) Hanks has starred in historical epics (“Sully\,” “Bridge Of Spies\,” Apollo 13″) and has won two Oscars amidst his five nominations. Clearly\, Tom Hanks has built a legendary career\, appearing in almost eighty films. And at only 61\, he has the potential to keep working for a long time! \nPlease join us for this great multimedia presentation on the life and career of Tom Hanks.  \n

SUMMARY:TV in the 1980s
DESCRIPTION:If the 1970s\, comedies tented to be the ground breakers and dramas were mostly bland and formulaic.  TV  in the 1980s tended to be quite different. While there were important comedies\, most notably  The Cosby Show\, Cheers  and The Golden Girls\, for the most part TV comedies in the 1980s  were simply pleasant diversions like Alf\, The Wonder Years\, Perfect Strangers\, & Silver Spoons. \nAs we look at more deeplyTV in the 1980s\, we see dramas  began to show a much more modern style\, moving away from the  predictable\, bland  formulaic cop and doctor shows popular in the 1970s.Programs like  Hill Street Blues\, LA Law\, 30 Something\, & St. Elsewhere were each terrific in and of themselves. But their popular and artistic success also pointed to an evolution into a more mature era of television dramas. \n  \nFinally\, the 1980s where the heyday of must see evening television soaps. Falcon Crest\, Dallas\, Knots Landing & Dynasty garnered phenomenal ratings and mesmerized many viewers. This multimedia presentation will explore what we watched and why we watched it in a transitional decade for American television. \nCOST: \nI suggest a $5.00 donation. SUMMARY:George Gershwin
DESCRIPTION:In a very short career\, George Gershwin changed American music forever. He was one of the most beloved composers of music for Broadway. his songs and shows continue to be revived on the New York stage and in theaters around the world. The list of standards written by Gershwin is seemingly endless.  “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off * Nice Work If You Can Get It * Shall We Dance * and  “They Can’t Take That Away From Me * are just a sample of the many popular songs written by Gershwin; most with unforgettable\, urbane lyrics by his ferociously talented brother\, Ira. \nGeorge Gershwin continued to challenge himself  by creating music in challenging and unique styles. He wrote “Porgy and Bess” including the iconic “Summertime” in a blues style\, wrote the unforgettable “Rhapsody in Blue” fusing jazz and classical elements\, and music for ballet\, “An American In Paris.”  \nHe had just conquered Hollywood with his first movie musical\, the sublime “Shall We Dance” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers when he died of a brain tumor. The master of American music was just 38. \nIn this lively and fascinating multimedia presentation\, you will be amazed by the amazing biography\, unparalleled career and enduring legacy of George Gershwin. \n

SUMMARY:Understanding The Election Of 2008
DESCRIPTION:Understanding The Election Of 2008\nIf the election of 2008 had been written as a movie script\, it could not have been more exciting. We faced the possibility that we would elect the first woman to the presidency\, the first African-American to the presidency or perhaps one of America’s greatest war heroes to the presidency. The nomination battles were thrilling\, the personalities were oversized\, and just when it couldn’t seem to get any more fascinating\, Sen. McCain chose  Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate! \nIn this insightful\, nonpartisan multimedia presentation\, you will learn about the backgrounds of each of the campaigns and candidates in the election of 2008. You’ll learn the very different election strategies that each pursued. We will look at the role of technology\, social media\, race\, television\, and the debates as factors in deciding an election like no other. The election of 2008 provides us a fascinating glimpse into the future of campaigning.   \nWe’ll see how social media and voter tracking began to replace television advertising as a means of motivating voters.  This effort led to long lines of voters across the country. We’ll also examine how one party began to utilize restrictive voting laws as a desperate means to try and ensure victory through voter suppression. \nThe career politician and war hero hero against a candidate with a painfully thin resume; a vice-presidential candidate with a penchant for gaffes versus one seemingly in way over her head.  This presentation on the election of 2008 is not to be missed. \n

SUMMARY:The Election Of 1960
DESCRIPTION:The election of 1960 was one of the most dramatic elections in American history. until the halted recount in the election of 2000\, it was the closest  Presidential election in our lifetimes.  This riveting  multimedia presentation features amazing anecdotes\, entry insights\, and numerous fascinating film clips to help put this most momentous campaign into perspective. \nRichard Nixon was coming off of eight years as vice president to one of the most popular presidents of all time. He had experience in domestic and foreign-policy and was a veteran many tough campaigns. hitill very young\, he offered a new face for the Republican Party’s future. He became the first sitting vice president to earn his party’s nomination since John C Breckenridge exactly 100 years earlier! \n  \nJohn F. Kennedy was only a few years younger than Nixon and considered him a friend. JFK was seen as a lightweight in the Senate\, proposing no major legislation and often missing long stretches of time due to surgeries and hospitalizations. However he was a war hero\, handsome\, charismatic and a best-selling author. He had to defeat a number of older and better known Democrats to earn the nomination. \n  \nAnd then came the campaign for president! Nixon’s national reputation vs. Kennedy’s cool and charisma. With polls showing just a slight Nixon believed throughout the summer\, the two men agreed to something that had never happened before: a series of presidential debates. Those debates turned the course of the election and changed politics\, They demonstrated the importance of television in future campaigns. Throw into the mix the rest of Martin Luther King Jr.\, Nixon’s phlebitis\, Kennedy’s mafia connections\, mystery votes in Illinois and odd campaign choices by Nixon and you have the makings of a fascinating campaign! \n

SUMMARY:Diana: Life And Death Of The People's Princess
DESCRIPTION:Diana: Glamorous And Tragic Life And Death Of a Princess\nShe was the “People’s Princess” beloved for her compassion as much as for her glamour. \nSweet\, pretty Lady Diana Spencer was a shy and charming kindergarten teacher when she caught the eye of Prince Charles\, heir to the throne of Great Britain. At first\, to the public\, her story seemed like a fairytale. A pretty young girl had been plucked out of obscurity to marry the dashing Prince. But the truth of Diana’s private life was very\, very different from the public perception.   \nIn 1981\, an estimated 750 million people around the world watched the beautiful 20-year-old Diana Spencer marry her handsome Prince Charles amidst all the pomp and circumstance of the British Empire. But barely more than 10 years later she was bitterly divorced with two children\, suffering from severe depression and eating disorders\, brought out on by the realization that her cool and diffident husband had been having an affair with a long time girlfriend\, Camilla Parker-Bowles. \nAfter Princess Diana’s ugly public divorce\, she became an outcast from the British Royal family. Despite that\, she became even more beloved by the British public! She was seen as an affectionate and doting mother\, an icon of fashion style\, and most importantly as a tireless champion for humanitarian causes. Diana met with Mother Teresa in an effort to bring attention to the global aid epidemic. She risked her life to try and read war zones of the scourge of land mines. \nWherever she went\, whatever she did and whomever she dated\, Diana’s her every move was followed by the insatiable British press. They detailed DIana’s every date\, every vacation\, and every outfit. \nWhen Princess Diana died in a horrible car crash she was mourned by the world. The outpouring of grief in Britain forever changed the nation’s view of the monarchy. Diana’s unexpected life\, veering between glamour and tragedy and her sudden and controversial death make for an unforgettable story. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Who Killed JFK – Historian Presents a Modern Analysis
DESCRIPTION: Who Killed JFK?\n I’ll Tell You! \n \nThe murder of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked the nation. A suspect was quickly arrested and subsequently murdered. President Lyndon Johnson appointed a blue ribbon committee – the Warren Commission – to answer the question: who killed JFK? \nTheir conclusion was that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. Immediately\, the public was skeptical. Stephen King described Oswald as “a semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur.” How could such an insignificant loser pull off such a dastardly crime? And why did Jack Ruby\, accused of being a Mob member\, kill Oswald? \nWe have been through with whispered knowledge of conspiracies and confessions and coverups. And so the public has asked for an explanation of the “magic bullet.” \nAnd the contradictory witness statements. \nAnd Oswald’s shadowy past. \nAnd all of the “secret files.” \nAnd all of the conspiracy theories. \nAnd all of the “mysterious deaths” associated with the assassination? \nBooks and articles\, movies and documentaries have raised in innumerable questions about who killed JFK. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis\nSo who killed JFK? I will attempt to answer as many of these questions as possible. First I will attempt to separate historical fact from theory & speculation. Second\, I will show what the historical record actually indicates happened. We have access to much more information today then the Warren Commission had in 1963/4 or the House of Representatives had in 1977. Third\, we will examine what modern computer forensics can tell us about the crime. For instance\, the Warren Commission had access to the “Zapruder Film.”  Today\, we can use computers to enhance and analyze the film. We can use modern technology to analyze the path of each of the bullets that were fired. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis \nAnd we can use computers to isolate the mysterious sounds captured by a Dallas motorcycle patrolman.  In 1977\, the House of Representatives believed that the recording showed four shots fired in Dealy Plaza.  The National Academy of Science\, among many other groups\, have taken the same sound recordings and used state-of-the-art technology to analyze them. What do we know now? \nYou may not agree with my conclusions\, but you will definitely learn a lot and come away with a new perspective about the historical record of who killed JFK. \nBONUS! Click Here to read the amazing story of how one of President Kennedy’s most trusted Secret Service agents saved the life of Harry Truman – TWICE!

SUMMARY:Sherman's March To The Sea - Saving America By Destroying A Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:Sherman’s March To The Sea – Saving America By Destroying A Rebellion\n No military action in the bloody Civil War was probably more controversial than Sherman’s March To The Sea. After the War\, traitors who were inclined to respect Grant and revere Lincoln were unreconstructed in their hatred of William T. Sherman. Why? The brutal\, unprecedented destruction of enormous swaths of the South hastened the end of the War and sped the end of the barbarous\,immoral and inhumane practice of the enslavement\, rape and murder of the descendants of kidnap victims. Sherman hastened the demise of that unspeakable activity. However the utter desolation of the lives and lands of so many White Southerners had a long-lasting impact on race relations and politics. \nSherman was a complex man\, brilliant and fragile\, harsh and yet sentimental. His troops adored him\, leaders of the terrorist rebellion feared him and Abraham Lincoln recognized his invaluable patriotic service to our nation. In this fast paced and constantly fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will learn how Gen. William Sherman and his dedicated troops easily crushed the army of traitors who stood in their way – in the process making military history and helping save the republic. Add to that his friendship with General Grant\, his deep respect for President Lincoln\, his amazing life after the war – they all make for a compelling and fascinating multimedia history presentation!   \n

SUMMARY:Meghan Markle And Wallis Simpson - A Study Ii Contrasts
DESCRIPTION:The scandalous relationship between Wallis SImpson and Prince Edward led to a Royal abdication and quite nearly brought down the British Monarchy. The engagement of American actress\, model and philanthropist Meghan Markle to Prince Harry of Great Britain caused many people in America and in England to ask the same question: “Who is Meghan Markle?” \nThe interest was so intense that in December\, 2018\, Google declared that “Meghan Markle” was the most searched name in the entire year! \nThe short answer is that Meghan Markle is a deeply compassionate and quite brilliant graduate of Northwestern University (with degrees in both International Relations and Theater! The biracial American divorcee was a star on a popular cable TV show called “Suits” after a stint as a sexy  ‘briefcase girl’ on “Deal Or No Deal.”  But look deeper and you find that the remarkable Meghan Markle also ran a very influential motivational website with millions of followers and actively\, passionately served in numerous charitable enterprises. So while she is not as famous as Rita Hayworth or Grace Kelly\, Meghan Markle is a wonderful person and already very popular in England! \nWallis Simpson was the twice divorced\, promiscuous\, social climbing American who bewitched the weak-willed\, promiscuous future King of England. She was still married when she began her affair with the fitter King – and was actively cheating on him with another married man! Although Hitler said Wallis would make “A great Queen” the Royal Family and the British people thought differently. After King Edward’s abdication\, they were effectively banished from Britain! \nThis fascinating multimedia presentation will look at these two very different and very controversial women!

SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION:Who were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody really knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse. However\, the role of First Lady was not given so much as a moment’s thought by the Founding Fathers. In fact\, the title “First Lady” itself was not even widely used until the 1850s! Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent an amazing array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nIn this original series I will present a list of my top ten favorite First Ladies.  Of course you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt. But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better every day in real ways by the legacy of First Lady Harriet Lane? Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy we had a younger First Ladywho became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children? (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation! It is not merely a collection of trivia.  Rather we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of marvelous Martha Washington\, a slave owner\, to modern Michelle Obama\, the descendent of slaves! \n  \n
