SUMMARY:Carl Reiner
DESCRIPTION:Carl Reiner is one of the funniest men ever to appear in – or write for – or direct an episode of TV! \nAt 97\, he is currently the oldest celebrity active on Twitter – and he is not even contemplating retiring from show business! Join me for a fast\, funny and fascinating look at one of America’s classic comic treasures\, Mr. Carl Reiner \nCarl Reiner first exploded into American consciousness as the straight man on the immortal Sid Caesar’s great TV shows. \nWorking alongside writing legends including Mel Brooks\, Woody Allen\, Neil Simon\, Selma Diamond and Larry Gelbart\, Carl Reiner became one of the volatile Caesar’s favorite co-stars and most trusted writers. \nTheir classic “Professor” sketches are still hilarious sixty-five years after they first aired. And his lifelong friendship and collaboration with Mel Brooks began as a result! \nAfter the Sid Caesar shows ended\, Carl Reiner created The DIck Van Dyke Show. This program would prove to be one of the most influential\, funniest and most transformative situation comedies of all time.  \nAfter Reiner and Van Dyke ended the show at the height of its popularity\, the brilliant writer/producer/director began working in feature films.  \nCarl Reiner created the cult classics “Where’s Poppa” and “Oh\, God” before embarking on a brilliant partnership with Steve Martin. The Reiner/Martin films include some of the best comedies of Steve Martin’s career\, including “The Jerk\,” “Alll Of Me\,” and “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. \nWe’ll enjoy clips and stories from all of this – and\, of course – the brilliant “2\,000 Year Old Man” routines with Mel Brooks. Don’t miss this great presentation!

SUMMARY:Sidney Poitier
DESCRIPTION:Sidney Poitier is one of the greatest actors in the history of American film. \nAdditionally\, Sidney Poitier is the man who broke the color barrier in Hollywood. Like Barack Obama or Jackie Robinson\, he was more than just a symbol. He was a man of great talent\, skill and accomplishment. His success was not only his\, but a reminder of how America had squelched the talents of so many talented citizens.  \nMany fans of the “Golden Era” of “classic films” – including myself – have had to come to grips with the racist\, segregationist nature of those movies. Judy Garland\, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant were great actors and their films remain enjoyable. But look at the films as a whole and you will see the leading roles are all played by white actors. Black actors appear as slaves\, domestics\, field hands\, or drivers. As great as Garland\, Astaire and Grant were\, it’s important to remember they were given opportunities denied to Lena Horne\, the Nicholas Brothers or any black man before Sidney Poitier. The racism of classic Hollywood denied us from appreciating some great talent. \nSidney Poitier\, in his best roles\, was simply magnificent. \nWatch “The Defiant Ones\,” “Blackboard Jungle\,” “Lillies Of The Field\,” “In The Heat Of The Night\,” “To Sir\, With Love\,” and “A Patch Of Blue” and you see a great actor at the top of his game. Poitier could be as suave as Cary Grant\, as intense as Humphrey Bogart\, as relatable as Jimmy Stewart. And unlike those other great actors\, Sidney Poitier went on to have a fabulous director of money making movies! \nJoin us for a fascinating multimedia look at the life and career of the great Sidney Poitier!

SUMMARY:Edward R. Murrow: The Legend\, The Man\, The Impact
DESCRIPTION:Edward R. Murrow \nMurrow at CBS \nWith a demagogue attacking anyone who criticized him\, newsman Edward R. Murrow bravely replied: \n“The actions of the junior Senator from Wisconsin have caused alarm and dismay amongst our allies abroad\, and given considerable comfort to our enemies. Cassius was right. “The fault\, dear Brutus\, is not in our stars\, but in ourselves.” \nGood night\, and good luck.” \nFrom his riveting broadcasts from the rooftops of London during the Blitz to his unforgettable account of entering the concentration camps to his heroic challenge to Sen. Joseph McCarthy\, Edward R Murrow has long represented excellence in electronic journalism. \nMurrow’s life story is unpredictable and unique; his career was harrowing\, inspiring and deeply influential. Using rare audio and video clips\, amazing anecdotes and fascinating facts\, the life and career of Edward R. Murrow will come to life in this multimedia presentation. SUMMARY:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates
DESCRIPTION:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates\n  \nHere is a historical question for you: \nWhat do Adlai Stevenson\, George McGovern\, Daniel Webster\, and Wendell Willkie have in common? \nEach of these talented\, admirable men ran for President and lost. \nAnd each was an outstanding person who might well have made a great President. \nIn this unique multimedia presentation\, I will share my list of the ten best men to run for President and lose.  I’ll offer fascinating glimpses into the men\, their times and the campaigns.  In addition to learning about the candidate himself\, we will explore why each man failed in his bid and do a bit of speculation on the different directions our country might have taken had the election been decided differently. \nConsider all the ways history might have changed if elections had gone differently. For instance\, how would America have responded on the morning of 9-11 if Al Gore had been elected  President? Can we guess in what ways World War II have been different if Wendell Willkie had been President on Pearl Harbor Day? We can speculate as to whether the Civil War have been fought if Stephen Douglas had beaten Abraham Lincoln?  It’s fun to think about and debate! \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Doolittle Raid - Flying Into Greatness
DESCRIPTION:The Doolittle Raid: America Fights Back\n \nAfter the deadly surprise attack on Pearl Harbor\, the USA wanted. Pres. Roosevelt knew that it would inevitably be a long war when we took on the forces of the Japanese Army and Navy. Our forces were insufficient before the devastating attack on Hawaii.  nonetheless\, FDR wanted to send a strong\, clear\, and unmistakable message to the Japanese: the United States WOULD fight back. \n An Unexpected Plan\nCol. Jimmy Doolitte volunteered to lead a group of raiders on one of the most  audacious attacks of all time. The plan was to drop bombs on Tokyo in the middle of the daytime. The Japanese people have been told that their island was invulnerable to an outside attack. If the Doolittle Raiders were successful\, their attack would be a shattering blow to the Japanese psyche. The only problem was that there was no practical way for American planes to attack the Japanese mainland. But utilizing American ingenuity\, full support of Pres. Roosevelt and Gen. George C Marshall\, and sheer bravado\, the Doolittle Raiders flew into greatness. Despite the myth that  the Doolittle Raid was just a “psychological victory\,” the truth is that the raid changed the direction of the war! \nThe heart stopping story of the Doolittle raid offered by a master storyteller makes for an unforgettable presentation! \n

SUMMARY:Ernie Pyle - The Voice Of G.I. Joe
DESCRIPTION:Ernie Pyle was one of the greatest reporters in American history. after writing one of the most popular and widely published newspaper columns in the USA\, he became the voice of the average infantry soldier during World War II. In this role\, Ernie Pyle became legendary. \nThe Second World War was covered by a number of brilliant journalists. Edward R. Murrow broadcast brilliantly from the rooftops of London\, William L. Shirer personally witnessed the entry of Hitler into Austria and Walter Cronkite tirelessly covered the War for the United Press. Each filed memorable reports that helped Americans better understand the War. \nMeanwhile\, Ernie Pyle carved out an unforgettable niche for himself. Instead of covering the “big picture” of the War\, Pyle traveled alongside the infantry. He became what we today would call an embedded journalist. Marching alongside the average G.I. Joe – a term he helped popularize – Ernie Pyle reported the “little picture.” He recorded the daily gripes and fears and small moments of humor encountered by the foot soldiers marching through Italy and then Germany. Millions of Americans read his column every day. His prose was crisp and observant and caring and sardonic. \nWhen the War ended in Europe\, Ernie Pyle returned home to New Mexico. Then\, reluctantly\, Pyle to join the forces preparing to invade Japan. He was exhausted\, his personal life was in a shambles and he had a fearful premonition that he would die there. \nOn Okinawa\, Ernie Pyle was killed by a sniper. The grief felt by his millions of readers and the entire Army was all but immeasurable. Tributes flowed from the President\, from the leaders of the American military and from journalists around the world. \nPerhaps the simple plaque erected by the soldiers who had marched alongside him would have been his favorite memorial. It read: \n  \nAt this spot \nThe 77th Infantry Division  \nLost a buddy. \nERNIE PYLE. \n18 April 1945 \nTo this day\, Ernie Pyle’s unique life\, unforgettable writing\, and tragic death place him in the pantheon of great correspondents. The School Of Journalism at Indiana University is named for Ernie Pyle and a number of books and a movie have helped keep his memory alive. Even Snoopy would regularly hist a can of K-Rations on the anniversary of Ernie Pyle’s death on the island of Okinawa. \nPlease join me for a unique and powerful multimedia presentation!

SUMMARY:Battle Of Trenton - Turning Point For Humanity
DESCRIPTION:The Battle Of Trenton\nThe iconic image of George Washington’s little boat crossing the Delaware River is firmly ingrained deep in the consciousness of America. Many people remember\, in general terms\, that General Washington took his army on rickety boats across an ice filled river to attack the enemy around Christmas time. The image of Washington Crossing the Delaware is so powerful and memorable that it has been used in  advertising\, comics\,\nand every avenue of popular culture. \nA deeper look at the Battle of Trenton shows us that it is actually an unmistakable turning point\, not only in the American Revolutionary war\, but in the history of the world. Although the Declaration of Independence made a breathtaking statement on the rights of man\, without the military victory at the Battle of Trenton\, the Revolutionary war and the Declaration  would merely be obscure footnotes in world history. They would just be anecdotal evidence of another failed revolt. \nWashington’s battle plan was audacious and his leadership was inspiring. After enduring a harrowing crossing of an ice filled river in a sleet storm in the middle of the night\, Washington’s men had to suffer through a nine mile march in a blizzard.  And then\, in less than ninety dramatic moments\, the Revolution was saved. The battle of Trenton was the first fight General Washington had won and is still the most important. SUMMARY:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates
DESCRIPTION:The Best Losing Presidential Candidates\n \nWhat do Adlai Stevenson\, George McGovern\, Daniel Webster\, and Wendell Willkie have in common? \nEach ran for President and lost. \nAnd each was an outstanding man who might well have made a great President. \nIn this unique multimedia presentation\, I will share my list of the ten best men to run for President and lose.  I’ll offer fascinating glimpses into the men\, the times and the campaigns.  We will explore why each man failed in his bid and do a bit of speculation on the different directions our country might have taken had the election been decided differently.  For instance\, how would America have responded on the morning of 9-11 if Al Gore had been President? Or if Wendell Willkie had been President on Pearl Harbor Day?  It’s fun to think about and debate! \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Kristin Chenoweth - Multi-Talented Performer With A Compassionate Heart
DESCRIPTION:Kristin Chenoweth is one of the most talented performers in America. She is also one of the nicest people ever to become a major star in show business. Her life story is as unexpected as her talent is overwhelming. \nLeo Durocher famously said “Nice guys finish last. He obviously never heard of Kristin Chenoweth. CLICK HERE to read about Kristin’s charity. \n \nKristin Chenoweth is a Tony award-winning Broadway star whose name on a marquee sells a lot of tickets. On television\, \n \nshe has won raves and an Emmy award with roles as diverse as a lovesick waitress and a presidential press advisor. Her recordings have been enormously popular and her concerts have sold out in both the USA and Europe. Kristin Chenoweth singing voice has been referred to by some as “the voice of the century.” She can bring down the house with a Broadway show tune\, but also sing pop\, Opera\, country\, and pretty much any style of music you can name. While the movies have not been as successful a medium for her\, she has appeared in a number of good films and her comic timing\, wacky voice and stunning good looks would seem to suggest that movie success is just a matter of time. \nOn a personal level\, Kristin Chenoweth is a very compassionate Christian who is proud and open when it comes to discussing her faith. She’s been a lightning rod for some conservative Christians because she openly favors gay marriage and argues against hatred\, intolerance\, or bigotry of any kind. She also has a reputation for being one of the kindest and most considerate people in the entertainment business. On several occasions\, although we’ve never met\, she has gone out of her way to do favors for me that I have reinforced her reputation for being one of the most genuine stars working today. \nIn this multimedia presentation you will be dazzled by her talent\, fascinated by her life story\, and inspired  by her personality. She is a woman to admire! \n  \nPLEASE NOTE – THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!  IT WILL BE HOSTED BY THE ALGONQUIN LIBRARY\, WHO REQUEST RESERVATIONS BE MADE \n  \nFREE FOOD WILL BE PROVIDED!!!! \n  \n  \n

Judy Garland\, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant were great actors and their films remain wildly enjoyable. Just as the quality of baseball became better when it integrated\, so did movies improve after Sidney Poitier helped open the door. A society is stronger when all its citizens can participate. \nHowever\, his career should not be seen only as historic and groundbreaking. He was a great actor! Sidney Poitier\, in his best roles\, was simply magnificent.

SUMMARY:Holiday Inn The Irving Berlin Musical
DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate the holidays with the music of the incomparable Irving Berlin! \n “Holiday Inn” is a brand-new stage adaptation of the timeless 1942 Irving Berlin omnibus musical movie. That classic film starred Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby. The original “Holiday Inn” movie\, from Paramount Productions\, gloriously featured some of Irving Berlin’s best holiday-themed songs. The unforgettable score included\, “White Christmas\,”  “Easter Parade” “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve\,” & “Happy Holidays \nThe original film\, while wonderful\, is also problematic. It features a cringe-worthy blackface number\, a few songs that are just duds\, and a few racial stereotypes that are just awful. These elements can make the film hard to watch – and harder still to introduce to young audiences/ \nIn 2016\, Broadway showcased a brand new\, reimagined stage version of Holiday Inn!  In this fast-moving and music filled presentation\, will examine the backstory of both the film and the “new Irving Berlin” musical. As a special treat will see rare clips of the Broadway production. The musical’s producers kept the original premise\, dropped the blackface (thank heavens!) axed the poor songs and added other great Irving Berlin melodies including “Heat Wave” and “Cheek To Cheek.” This reimagined musical is a total delight!  Join us to celebrate Irving Berlin and “Holiday Inn!” \nIf you are a fan of Irving Berlin\, Broadway musicals\, or you just want to smile and soak up the holiday spirit\, you definitely do not want to miss this presentation! \nIMPORTANT NOTE: Please contact the venue to register – registration is required!
