SUMMARY:Sid Caesar - The Meteoric Career Of A Comic Genius
DESCRIPTION:In the opinion of many TV critics\, the Sid Caesar programs were the funniest\, best-written\, and most creative shows in television comedy history. Caesar’s writing crew (including Carl Reiner\, Woody Allen\, Mel Brooks\, Neil Simon\, and Selma Diamond( is widely regarded as the most talented staff in the history of television. \nThe sheer talent of Sid Caesar is overwhelming – as  Carl Reiner\, his writer\, and co-star\, put it: \n“Sid Caesar set the template for everybody\,” Reiner told KNX-AM in Los Angeles. “He was without a doubt the greatest sketch comedian-monologist that television ever produced. He could ad-lib. He could do anything that was necessary to make an audience laugh.” \n \nFor all his accolades\, however\, Sid Caesar was a deeply troubled man who saw a brilliant career waste away in the wake of his addictions. After his TV programs ended\, his fame evaporated as his demons challenged him\,  It took intensive self-therapy and personal courage for him to turn his life around. And did he ever!  By the time of his death\, he was once again rewarded with the respect and reverence his comic genius deserved. \n\nThis unique multimedia presentation will explore all sides of Sid Caesar. You will laugh uproariously at the rare video clips and find yourself mesmerized by the intense struggle of the king of Comedy. \n  \n  \nTHIS PRESENTATION IS LIVE AND WILL NOT BE STREAMED. THE PRESENTATION IS AT THE HIGHLAND PARK SENIOR\, LOCATED AT THE BEAUTIFUL HIGHLAND PARK COUNTRY CLUB. REGISTER THROUGH THEM! \n

SUMMARY:TV By The Decades: Television in the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:TV in the 1960s\nThe 1960s were definitely one of TV’s oddest decades! The 1960s began with Westerns dominating the ratings! The old West soap opera Bonanza became the most popular show on the air. One after another competing show was vanquished by the old time sensibilities of an old-fashioned Western. \nAll you really need to know about the diverse nature of TV in the 1960s is found in the answer to the question: “What show finally was able to compete with Bonanza in the ratings?” The answer was a liberal\, modern and very controversial challenger: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. This bastion of hip\, cutting edge liberal comedy gave young viewers quite a stark alternative to the Ponderosa! (Trivia! Bonanza\, like Dragnet\, had their stars wear the exact same clothes every week. It saved money on costumes and allowed the producers to reuse old shots from previous episodes! \nSo the 1960s were the era of Gunsmoke and Wagon Train\, Gilligan’s Island and The Beverly Hillbillies and Laugh-In and The Smothers Brothers! We will talk about how TV grew and changed as viewers who had enjoyed Combat began tuning in to Hogan’s Heroes. You won’t want to miss this fast paced multimedia presentation! \nIN THE COMMENTS BELOW – LIST YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW OF THE 1960s! \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 from everyone who registers for the class. PLEASE MARK “TV 1950” in the subject line on your check or e-payment! If you are interested but cannot afford the donation\, please sign up! SUMMARY:Dick Van Dyke Show: Leading Television Into The 60s
DESCRIPTION:The Dick Van Dyke Show is well remembered as one of the wittiest situation comedies in the history of television. \nWhat is less well remembered is that Carl Reiner’s creation was a tremendously influential\, but deceptive innovator. The DIck Van Dyke Show contrasts sharply with the situation comedies of the 1950s; in fact it ushers in a new era. It was the first sitcom to be set in suburbia\, to feature both the world of work AND a fully developed home life as a central focus \,the first show to offer rich and consistent backstories for all the characters\, the first  to present a modern housewife as well as the first show to feature a professional woman in the workplace. \nThis unique presentation will highlight one of the most iconic programs and early TV history.  Click here to see a brief preview video about this program! \n  \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 from everyone who registers for the class. PLEASE MARK “DVD” in the subject line on your check or e-payment! If you are interested but cannot afford the donation\, please sign up! SUMMARY:TV In The 1970s
DESCRIPTION:TV IN THE 1970s \nWhat was television like in the 1970s? \nIt was the decade of Roots and the decade of The Love Boat. Silly television comedies were everywhere! The 1970s was the decade of Laverne & Shirley\, The Fonz\, Mork and Mindy\, WKRP\, Three’s Company and both The Brady Bunch and the Partridge Family.  \nDramas became very formulaic and for the most part fairly bland. But Norman Lear created All in the Family a groundbreaking comedy that led to a national debate about racism\, conservatism\, homophobia\, abortion\, mental illness and almost every important social issue of the time. And they did so in a way that was so funny that the show was the top ranked show on television for a record five consecutive years. As Archie Bunker became the voice of  Richard Nixon’s “Silent Majority” other topical comedies such as Chico and the Man\, The Jeffersons\, Sanford and Son\, Maude\, and Good Times  began to change the face of what television situation comedies would look like. \nPerhaps no one  changed the role of women on television more than Mary Tyler Moore.  Her program broke ground with a monumentally popular view of a single working woman in a professional career.   \nFinally\, M*A*S*H   captivated America with his unique and unforgettable combination  of drama\, comedy\, politics and personality set against the backdrop of the Korean War but really opening a discussion about what had happened in Vietnam. \n  \nThis fast-moving multimedia presentation is more than just nostalgic. It’s also an insightful look at what we were watching and why we were watching it at that particular moment in time. The 1970s were a unique decade and television both reflected and shaped the way we live. \nCOST: \nI suggest a $5.00 donation. If you cannot afford $5.00\, please just come as my guest. Please mark your payment with a note in the subject line that says TV 80 \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. SUMMARY:TV in the 1980s
DESCRIPTION:If the 1970s\, comedies tented to be the ground breakers and dramas were mostly bland and formulaic.  TV  in the 1980s tended to be quite different. While there were important comedies\, most notably  The Cosby Show\, Cheers  and The Golden Girls\, for the most part TV comedies in the 1980s  were simply pleasant diversions like Alf\, The Wonder Years\, Perfect Strangers\, & Silver Spoons. \n TV in the 1980s Dramas  began to show a much more modern style\, moving away from the  predictable\, bland  formulaic cop and doctor shows popular in the 1970s. Hill Street Blues\, LA Law\, 30 Something\,  & St. Elsewhere were each terrific in and of themselves. But they are popular and artistic success also pointed to a more mature era of television dramas. \n  \nFinally\, the 1980s where the heyday of must see evening television soaps. Falcon Crest\, Dallas\, Knots Landing & Dynasty garnered phenomenal ratings and mesmerized many viewers. This multimedia presentation will explore what we watched and why we watched it in a transitional decade for American television. \nCOST: \n  \nI suggest a $5.00 donation. SUMMARY:TV In The 1990s
DESCRIPTION:The 1990s were a transformative decade in American TV.. \nSimply the sheer number of programs on TV in the 1990s grew exponentially This was due to the arrival of cable TV networks\, like HBO\, Cinemax\, Showtime and other channels aiming specialized programming aimed directly at their target audience. \nWhile the broadcast networks gave us great fare like Homicide\, Life On The Streets\, Seinfeld\, The Simpsons\, NYPD Blue and  Northern Exposure\, we began to see competitors like the WB\, the Food Network\, and the National Geographic network begin to expand the range of television programming. With more and better programs available\, plus the ability to tape programs completely shifted the nature of the viewing experience! SUMMARY:Gracie Allen – Underappreciated Comic Genius

SUMMARY:The Marx Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Marx Brothers were much\, much better than you remember! Their humor uplifted American spirits during the Depression and established new standards for comedy. The Marx Brothers combination of odd and unique talents\, including a harp playing mime\, a Jewish comic with the worst Italian accent and the most distinctive piano playing style\, and one of the greatest monologists of all time have delighted and baffled classic movie fans since the Depression. They performed alongside Lucille Ball\, sang music written by Irving Berlin and acted in comedies written by the great George S. Kaufmann\, yet many people dimly think of the as analogous to The Three Stooges. \nBut when you look deeper you see an amazing immigrant success story\, discover how American popular culture was changing\, and meet four remarkably different and interesting men whose films rank among the best comedies of all time. “Duck Soup” is rightly considered one of the greatest films ever made about politics. Both that film and “A Night AT The Opera” are on the AFI list of the 100 best movies! Whether you are a long time fan of the Marx Brothers\, a skeptic or completely unfamiliar with their work\, you are in for a treat with this fun multimedia presentation! \nTHIS PRESENTATION IS NOT OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC

SUMMARY:Sidney Poitier
DESCRIPTION:Sidney Poitier is\, without question\, one of the greatest actors in the history of American film. \nAdditionally\, Sidney Poitier is the man who broke the color barrier in Hollywood. Like Barack Obama or Jackie Robinson\, he was more than just a symbol. He was a man of great talent\, skill and accomplishment. His success was not only his\, but a reminder of how America had squelched the talents of so many talented citizens.  \nMany fans of the “Golden Era” of “classic films” – including myself – have had to come to grips with the racist\, segregationist nature of those movies. Judy Garland\, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant were great actors and their films remain wildly enjoyable. But look at the films as a whole and you will see the leading roles are all played by white actors. Black actors appear as slaves\, domestics\, field hands\, or drivers. As great as Garland\, Astaire and Grant were\, it’s important to remember they were given opportunities denied to Lena Horne\, the Nicholas Brothers or any black man before Sidney Poitier. The racism of classic Hollywood denied us from appreciating some great talent. Just as the quality of baseball became better when it integrated\, so did movies improve after Sidney Poitier helped open the door. A society is stronger when all its citizens can participate. \nHowever\, his career should not be seen only as historic and groundbreaking. He was a great actor! Sidney Poitier\, in his best roles\, was simply magnificent. \nWatch “The Defiant Ones\,” “Blackboard Jungle\,” “Lillies Of The Field\,” “In The Heat Of The Night\,” “To Sir\, With Love\,” and “A Patch Of Blue” and you see a great actor at the top of his game. You can even see him in a movie with Dan Aykroyd! Poitier could be as suave as Cary Grant\, as intense as Humphrey Bogart\, as relatable as Jimmy Stewart. And unlike those other great actors\, Sidney Poitier went on to have a fabulous director of money making movies! \nJoin us for a fascinating multimedia look at the life and career of the great Sidney Poitier! \n

SUMMARY:1920 - History In Perspective
DESCRIPTION:1920 was a fascinating year that ushered in an amazing decade!  \nAlthough Americans tend to think of “The Roaring 20s” as the era of flappers\, bathtub gin\, Al Capone\, a booming stock market\, and a much more liberal sexual atmosphere\, the decade was far more complex. The atmosphere of social liberalism was being counterbalanced by the non-stop election of conservative Republicans\, a major pushback from organized religion\, and signs of a deteriorating economy despite seeming prosperity.  \n1920 saw two seemingly opposite trends converge – Americans elected very conservative\, old-fashioned politicians at the same time they were beginning to flout conventional norms of behavior. As an example: we outlawed the sale of alcohol and almost  immediately there grew a culture of drinking\, new criminal organizations to sell booze and the glorification of those who opposed the very government they had just elected! \nWe will focus in on the specific year of 1920 – taking a deep dive into the culture\, sports\, movies\, economy and major news stories of a most fascinating\, transitional year! \nCOST: \nI suggest a $5.00 donation. SUMMARY:Jack Ruby - Hothead\, Hitman or Patriot?
DESCRIPTION:Jack Ruby – Hothead\, Hitman or Patriot?\nHere is what we know for sure.  Jack Ruby was an erratic\, violent man who murdered Lee Harvey Oswald \n \nWhat we cannot be certain of is WHY Jack Ruby chose to murder Lee Harvey Oswald.  Some conspiracy theorists focus in on Ruby’s ties to organized crime and claim that he shot Oswald on orders from the Mafia in order to protect the Mob leaders who ordered JFK’s assassination.  Other theorists jump on his ties to the Dallas Police and say he was a hit man working for THEM! (The statements would seem contradictory\, unless you assume that the Mafia and the Dallas Police conspired to murder Oswald!) \nThis very unique  in-depth multi-media presentation explores Jack Ruby’s dark past\, his countless acts of spontaneous violence and his twisted relationships with women\, colleagues\, employers and mobsters.  We will look at all of the major theories that attempt to explain Jack Ruby’s strange behavior. Using the documented details from his odd life and his painful death\, we will eventually see which theory best explains Jack Ruby’s decision to murder Lee Harvey Oswald. \n  \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:1945
DESCRIPTION:Join me in our time capsule for this amazing look back at one of the most important years in the history of the world: 1945. \nIn 1945 World War II finally came to an end. After the deaths of both Adolph Hitler and Franklin D. Roosevelt\, the evil Nazi empire finally surrendered. In the Pacific Theatre\, fierce battles came to an end with the dropping of the world’s first atomic bombs. The destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war – but ushered in a vastly more dangerous era. \nWe will look at the most popular movies\, top radio shows and chart leading songs of 1945. As we look back\, we’ll discover what famous people were born and which died during the year\, learn about what everyday consumer items cost and look back at the amazing\, ultimately heartbreaking World Series run of the Chicago Cubs! It would prove to be their last world series appearance until 2016! \nThe America of 75 years ago was very different than the America of 2020. But in ways small and large it is tremendously important to how we live today.  \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Dick Van Dyke Show: FREE PRESENTATION
\nThis program is FREE !  CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:Jane Addams
DESCRIPTION:Jane Addams is widely recognized as one of the most influential and admired women in both Chicago and American history. Her name is synonymous with “Hull House” – one of the groundbreaking and greatest examples of settlement house social work and community organizing in the USA.  Along with her  amazing colleague\, Ellen Starr\, Jane Addams changed the way Chicagoans and Americans thought about providing social service for immigrants and the poor. \nThe unique effectiveness of Hull House  has been demonstrated many times over in its impact on Chicago and the numerous institutions that sprung up around the country in an attempt to duplicate its model. \nIf Hull House had been her only accomplishment\, Jane Addams would be absolutely deserving of the respect of every succeeding generation of Americans. \nHowever\, as you will learn in this unique and fascinating multimedia presentation\, the life of Jane Addams was complex\, her accomplishments great\, and her influence very profound on many aspects of American life. She was a political activist\, educational  reformer\, a champion of women’s rights and the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Your admiration and respect for Jane Addams will only grow as you witness her long and effective life. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of just  $5.00. SUMMARY:Best Of Recent Broadway - Part 1
DESCRIPTION:With Broadway shut down until next year\, I want to share some of the best musicals to have played on ‘The Great White Way’ in the last five years. Today’s session will feature the backstory\, music and a critical review of two great shows: “Come From Away\,” and the Tony Award winning “Something Rotten. \n“Come From Away” is a powerful\, dramatic and uplifting musical about how the \n small town of Gander\, Newfoundland\, welcomed Americans who were stranded during 9-11. You would not think a musical with the 9-11 attacks as a backdrop could be joyous and inspiring\, but “Come From Away” conveys a powerful message of hope\, compassion\, friendship and caring. It is a completely unique work of theater\, filled with unforgettable characters\, terrific music and a plot that – I promise you – you will never forget. This is not only one of my favorite shows of recent years\, this is now one of my favorite shows ever! \n“Something Rotten” is a side-splitting work of musical COMEDY that had audiences screaming with laughter. Despite rave reviews\, it struggled to build an audience. Standing in the TKTS line\, I heard people say they wouldn’t see “Something Rotten” because it “was about Shakespeare.” Their assumption was that it’d be obscure\, hard to follow and pedantic. It scored ten Tony Award nominations\, far more than higher profile shows with known stars like Kristin Chenoweth and Kelsey Grammer)\, well known titles or familiar music. “Something Rotten” scores high with critics and enjoys sensational word-of-mouth from audiences that have discovered it. Like “The Producers” is is not meant to be anything but funny. One song got a standing ovation – in the first act! Ready to laugh? \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or if you feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free\, I am unemployed but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget!

SUMMARY:Cole Porter - Risque Master Of American Music (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:We begin with a simple statement of absolute truth.  Cole Porter is one of the greatest songwriters in American history. Porter’s melodies were sublime. Equally unforgettable are his amazing  lyrics- they  were clever\, witty\, sophisticated\, original and naughty. Surprisingly\, although we tend to think of Cole Porter as simply the ultimate European oriented sophisticate – he was actually born in tiny Peru\, Indiana! \nThe list of songs written by Porter includes some of the greatest entries in the great American Songbook!  Consider: \nLET’S DO IT (LET’S FALL IN LOVE) (1928) \n NIGHT AND DAY (1932) \nANYTHING GOES (1934) \n DON’T FENCE ME IN (1934) \nI GET A KICK OUT OF YOU (1934) \nBEGIN THE BEGUINE (1935) \n I’VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN (1936) \nIT’S DE-LOVELY (1936) \nPorter’s legacy was further assured by brilliant Broadway shows like “Kiss Me Kate” and “Can-Can.” But beneath the surface of this bon-vivant lay a tortured soul. Cole Porter lived in both psychic and physical pain much of his life. His life story\, his personality and his unforgettable music combine for a memorable multimedia presentation! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00.
