SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans simply do not know very much about the Revolutionary War.   \nAlthough certain images from the Revolutionary War are seared into our memory – Washington Crossing the Delaware and the signing of the Declaration of Independence –  many people would be hard-pressed to name a major battle\, a leading general\, or even how the War For Independence ended.  Recent events in America have caused some to question whether we should even have statues of George Washington on public display. \nTHE REVOLUTIONARY WAR\n In this four-part series on the Revolutionary War\, we will examine why the freest and most prosperous colonials in the world decided to declare independence from a mother country that had protected them. We will look at the roots of the war\, the Declaration of Independence\, the early battles\, including Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, before transitioning into a longer look at the seven years of fighting necessary for America to begin its experiment in participatory democracy. We will also look at the amazing and diverse leaders who guided America. Benjamin Franklin\,James Monroe\, John Adams\, Paul Revere\, George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, and Alexander Hamilton will be some of the people we will meet. I encourage you to learn more about how America came to be! \n

SUMMARY:Lincoln's Year Decision: 1863
DESCRIPTION:1863 was a turning point in America. Abraham Lincoln had struggled with the question of how to handle the issue of slavery. He was personally opposed to human beings’ enslavement but didn’t think the government had the power to end it. In this powerful multimedia presentation\, we will look at how the battles and trials of 1863 changed America and led Lincoln to declare the Emancipation Proclamation. Among the fascinating topics we will look at will be the Gettysburg address\, the major battles of 1863\, Lincoln’s declaration of the first thanksgiving day\, and how Lincoln’s view on emancipation changed.\nIn 1863\, Abraham Lincoln made the rationale for winning the war\, not just the preservation of the Union but also the destruction and elimination of the barbaric practice of slavery. At Gettysburg\, Lincoln made one of the most memorable speeches of all time\, declaring\,| “that government of the people\, by the people\, for the people\, shall not perish from the earth.”  \nIn 1863 Lincoln showed his great compassion and deep faith by declaring the first National Thanksgiving Day – despite the carnage of the War. \nFinally\, as battles raged and riots erupted\, President Abraham Lincoln announced the \nEmancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made it clear that the purpose of the Civil War had shifted\, we were no longer in a fight just for national unity. We were now fighting to end the barbaric practice of enslaving human beings. However\, victory against the terrorists was still far from certain. Lincoln’s moral stance elevated the purpose of the War to something noble. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing multimedia presentation! \n

SUMMARY:Jackie Robinson
DESCRIPTION: Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. The dramatic story of how Branch Rickey defied the baseball establishment by promoting the major leagues the first African American players ever to walk on the field is fascinating. \nHowever\, Jackie Robinson is more than just a symbol of integration.  First\, he was a great baseball player. A great\, great player. And then we have to recognize that Jackie Robinson was a decidedly complex and interesting man both on and off the field. As the baseball overlords knew\, very few men could have stood up against the pressure he faced.   Jackie Robinson’s passionate involvement in the civil rights movement\, his advocacy of minority entrepreneurship\, his involvement in the political world\, and the business world each create a clearer and more complete picture of an important man. \nWe will examine both the famous story of his rise to the major leagues and the private story of what he had to overcome on the path to sports greatness\, including his court-martial during World War II for standing up to racism!. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing multimedia presentation! \n

SUMMARY:The History Of NBC
DESCRIPTION:The history of NBC is perhaps the most storied and essential in broadcasting history. Its founder\, the illustrious David Sarnoff\, was the genius who turned a small local radio station into a gigantic\, influential multimedia empire\, always had dreams of greatness\, and his tremendous vision brought his network along with him. His contributions to American popular culture cannot be overstated! \nAlthough CBS had the early advantage in news broadcasting\, NBC (an offshoot of RCA) eventually caught up with Huntley and Brinkley. It took a while for NBC to compete with CBS in radio\, but stars like Bob Hope made it possible. The history of NBC in the television years is especially intriguing. The National Broadcasting CompanyThe National Broadcasting Company probably debuted color TV and eventually became a perennial rating champion. \n \nAlong the way\, NBC pioneered morning TV with ” The Today Show\,” and late-night became and NBC’s staple with “The Tonight Show” with multitalented host Steve Allen and later the iconic Johnny Carson. And at a time when no one thought that late-night weekend programming would work\, NBC revolutionized television with ”Saturday Night Live.” \nJoin us as we relive the extraordinary and unexpected journey as NBC grew from a local radio station into the “Peacock network.” \nBonus: Click here to read about a fascinating myth about David Sarnoff\, the founder of NBC and the Titanic! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:The History Of ABC
DESCRIPTION:The youngest of the big three broadcasting networks\, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC)\, began as an offshoot of NBC and was for decades mired in third place in the ratings. That began to change when Walt Disney stepped in. Disney helped popularize color broadcasting and led to the development of a new identity for ABC. Nonetheless\, it was not until the 1970s\, with the introduction of young-skewing\, sitcoms that it was entirely clear that ABC would survive!\n \nEventually developing a more youth-oriented schedule\, ABC carved out a special and popular identity of its own. While today the network is primarily known for its endless parade of ‘reality’ shows (“The Bachelor\, “Extreme Makeover\,” “Dancing With The Stars”) and recycled game shows (“The Match Game\,” “Supermarket Sweep\,” Card Sharks)\, ABC is also the network that brought innovations like “Whose Line Is It Anyway\,” Monday Night Football\,” “Roots” and “The Fugitive\,” as well as 20/20 and Barbara Walters’\, mesmerizing interviews.\n \n\nJoin us for this fun and fascinating multimedia look at a giant of American Broadcasting!\n \n\nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Diana: Life Of The The People's Princess
DESCRIPTION:Diana: Glamorous And Tragic Life Of a Princess\nLady Diana Spencer was the “People’s Princess” beloved throughout the world for her compassion as much as for her glamour. \nSweet\, pretty Lady Diana Spencer was a shy and charming kindergarten teacher when she caught the eye of Prince Charles\, heir to the throne of Great Britain. At first\, to the public\, her story seemed like a fairytale. A pretty young girl had been plucked out of obscurity to marry the dashing Prince. But the truth of Diana’s private life was very\, very different from the public perception.   \nIn 1981\, an estimated 750 million people around the world watched the beautiful 20-year-old Diana Spencer marry her handsome Prince Charles amidst all the pomp and circumstance of the British Empire. But barely more than 10 years later she was bitterly divorced with two children\, suffering from severe depression and eating disorders\, brought out on by the realization that her cool and diffident husband had been having an affair with a long time girlfriend\, Camilla Parker-Bowles. \nAfter Princess Diana’s ugly public divorce\, she became an outcast from the British Royal family. Despite that\, she became even more beloved by the British public! She was seen as an affectionate and doting mother\, an icon of fashion style\, and most importantly as a tireless champion for humanitarian causes. Diana met with Mother Teresa in an effort to bring attention to the global aid epidemic. She risked her life to try and read war zones of the scourge of land mines. \nWherever she went\, whatever she did and whomever she dated\, Diana’s her every move was followed by the insatiable British press. They detailed DIana’s every date\, every vacation\, and every outfit. \nWhen Princess Diana died in a horrible car crash she was mourned by the world. The outpouring of grief in Britain forever changed the nation’s view of the monarchy. Diana’s unexpected life\, veering between glamour and tragedy and her sudden and controversial death make for an unforgettable story. \nTWO PARTS! Part one will run from 11:30 – 12:30. Part Two will cover her tragic death and the response in Britain It will run next week at the same time. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5. SUMMARY:1920 - A Turning Point In American History!
DESCRIPTION:1920 was a fascinating year that ushered in an amazing decade!  \n \nWas it a liberal time or conservative? In the same year that women got the right to vote\, Americans lost the right to buy alcohol. \nThe complexity of 1920 open the door. Although Americans tend to think of “The Roaring 20s” as the era of flappers\, bathtub gin\, Al Capone\, a booming stock market\, and a much more liberal sexual atmosphere\, the decade was far more complex. The atmosphere of social liberalism was being counterbalanced by the non-stop election of conservative Republicans\, a major pushback from organized religion\, and signs of a deteriorating economy despite seeming prosperity.  \n1920 saw two seemingly opposite trends converge. On the one hand\, Americans overwhelmingly elected very conservative\, old-fashioned politicians who promised a return to traditional values. But at the same time\, they were beginning to flout conventional norms of behavior. As an example: we outlawed the sale of alcohol\, and almost immediately\, there grew a massive underground culture of drinking\, new criminal organizations to sell booze\, and the glorification of mobsters who opposed the very government\, the voters\, had just elected! \nWe will focus on the specific year of 1920 – taking a deep dive into the culture\, sports\, movies\, economy\, and major news stories of a most fascinating\, transitional year! \nREGISTER: CLICK HERE! \n

SUMMARY:The Civil War In 1864 -65
DESCRIPTION:The Civil War In 1864 -65 marks the culmination of the battle to reunify the land\, crush the terrorists and end the barbaric practice of slavery. Although the fighting ends when the brilliant leadership of Generals Grant\, Sherman\, Sheridan\, and Meade and Admiral Farragut finally destroys the terrorist army threatening the United States Of America\, the end of the Civil War also brings about the murder of Abraham Lincoln. \nThe brutal killing of our greatest President by a  motley group of terrorists dooms the South to almost a century of racial antagonism\, poverty and strife. As we think about the end of the Civil War\, we will also think about what it heralded for the future. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing multimedia presentation! \nALL REGISTRATION IS THROUGH HIGHLAND PARK SENIOR CENTER. SUMMARY:The Life Of Harriet Tubman
DESCRIPTION:The life of Harriet Tubman is one of the most extraordinary tales of heroism\, sacrifice\, and courage you will ever hear. Many Americans know the name of Harriet Tubman as a conductor on the underground railroad. They remember that she led many enslaved people to freedom. But like Rosa Parks or Paul Revere\, she’s remembered more as a symbolic figure than as a real-life person whose life was dramatic before and after her daring rescues behind enemy lines. \nIn this fast moving and fascinating multimedia presentation\, you will meet the woman behind the legend. The life of Harriet Tubman includes being a spy\, a nurse\, an advocate for women’s suffrage\, and the distinction of being the first American woman ever to lead regular army troops into combat! I love this presentation and I think you will as well!

SUMMARY:Diana: Death Of The The People's Princess
DESCRIPTION:Diana: Tragic Death Of a Princess\nLady Diana Spencer was the “People’s Princess” beloved throughout the world for her compassion as much as for her glamour. This is part two\, in which we cover the tragic death of Diana and the reaction from the Monarchy. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5. SUMMARY:Thomas Edison Bright Ideas - A Multimedia Biography
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Edison Bright Ideas\nThomas Edison (1847 – 1931) was a genius! He is best remembered as one of the greatest inventors of all time.  Edison was certainly that!  But the great Edison was not terribly interested in theoretical science. Instead\, (like Benjamin Franklin) he concentrated on practical discoveries such as the light bulb\, motion picture cameras\, sound recording\, and voting machines.  Thomas Edison’s bright ideas transformed the world!  His inventions changed the lives of all Americans and ushered in a period of explosive economic growth as technology created new jobs\, opportunities\, and investments. \nBut as you will discover in this fascinating multimedia biography\, Thomas Edison was also a pioneering and visionary businessman\, a philosopher\, and a mentor.  He also had some forward-thinking – and wrongheaded – views of society. We will explore the roots of his personality. You’ll see how his personal struggles with learning disabilities and hearing loss make his accomplishments all the more remarkable. \nWe will look at his unique family dynamic\, the early manifestations of his genius\, the controversies surrounding his patents\, and some of his offbeat and dubious beliefs. \nALL REGISTRATION IS THROUGH NORTH SHORE SENIOR CENTER! I DO NOT HAVE THE LINKS!
