SUMMARY:1920 - A Turning Point In American History!
DESCRIPTION:1920 was a fascinating year that ushered in an amazing decade!  \n \nWas it a liberal time or conservative? In the same year that women got the right to vote\, Americans lost the right to buy alcohol. \nThe complexity of 1920 open the door. Although Americans tend to think of “The Roaring 20s” as the era of flappers\, bathtub gin\, Al Capone\, a booming stock market\, and a much more liberal sexual atmosphere\, the decade was far more complex. The atmosphere of social liberalism was being counterbalanced by the non-stop election of conservative Republicans\, a major pushback from organized religion\, and signs of a deteriorating economy despite seeming prosperity.  \n1920 saw two seemingly opposite trends converge. On the one hand\, Americans overwhelmingly elected very conservative\, old-fashioned politicians who promised a return to traditional values. But at the same time\, they were beginning to flout conventional norms of behavior. As an example: we outlawed the sale of alcohol\, and almost immediately\, there grew a massive underground culture of drinking\, new criminal organizations to sell booze\, and the glorification of mobsters who opposed the very government\, the voters\, had just elected! \nWe will focus on the specific year of 1920 – taking a deep dive into the culture\, sports\, movies\, economy\, and major news stories of a most fascinating\, transitional year! \nREGISTER: CLICK HERE! \n

SUMMARY:The Civil War In 1864 -65
DESCRIPTION:The Civil War In 1864 -65 marks the culmination of the battle to reunify the land\, crush the terrorists and end the barbaric practice of slavery. Although the fighting ends when the brilliant leadership of Generals Grant\, Sherman\, Sheridan\, and Meade and Admiral Farragut finally destroys the terrorist army threatening the United States Of America\, the end of the Civil War also brings about the murder of Abraham Lincoln. \nThe brutal killing of our greatest President by a  motley group of terrorists dooms the South to almost a century of racial antagonism\, poverty and strife. As we think about the end of the Civil War\, we will also think about what it heralded for the future. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing multimedia presentation! \nALL REGISTRATION IS THROUGH HIGHLAND PARK SENIOR CENTER. I DO NOT HAAVE THE ZOOM LINKS!

SUMMARY:The Life Of Harriet Tubman
DESCRIPTION:The life of Harriet Tubman is one of the most extraordinary tales of heroism\, sacrifice\, and courage you will ever hear. Many Americans know the name of Harriet Tubman as a conductor on the underground railroad. They remember that she led many enslaved people to freedom. But like Rosa Parks or Paul Revere\, she’s remembered more as a symbolic figure than as a real-life person whose life was dramatic before and after her daring rescues behind enemy lines. \nIn this fast moving and fascinating multimedia presentation\, you will meet the woman behind the legend. The life of Harriet Tubman includes being a spy\, a nurse\, an advocate for women’s suffrage\, and the distinction of being the first American woman ever to lead regular army troops into combat! I love this presentation and I think you will as well!

SUMMARY:Diana: Death Of The The People's Princess
DESCRIPTION:Diana: Tragic Death Of a Princess\nLady Diana Spencer was the “People’s Princess” beloved throughout the world for her compassion as much as for her glamour. \nSweet\, pretty Lady Diana Spencer was a shy and charming kindergarten teacher when she caught the eye of Prince Charles\, heir to the throne of Great Britain. At first\, to the public\, her story seemed like a fairytale. A pretty young girl had been plucked out of obscurity to marry the dashing Prince. But the truth of Diana’s private life was very\, very different from the public perception.   \nIn 1981\, an estimated 750 million people around the world watched the beautiful 20-year-old Diana Spencer marry her handsome Prince Charles amidst all the pomp and circumstance of the British Empire. But barely more than 10 years later she was bitterly divorced with two children\, suffering from severe depression and eating disorders\, brought out on by the realization that her cool and diffident husband had been having an affair with a long time girlfriend\, Camilla Parker-Bowles. \nAfter Princess Diana’s ugly public divorce\, she became an outcast from the British Royal family. Despite that\, she became even more beloved by the British public! She was seen as an affectionate and doting mother\, an icon of fashion style\, and most importantly as a tireless champion for humanitarian causes. Diana met with Mother Teresa in an effort to bring attention to the global aid epidemic. She risked her life to try and read war zones of the scourge of land mines. \nWherever she went\, whatever she did and whomever she dated\, Diana’s her every move was followed by the insatiable British press. They detailed DIana’s every date\, every vacation\, and every outfit. \nWhen Princess Diana died in a horrible car crash she was mourned by the world. The outpouring of grief in Britain forever changed the nation’s view of the monarchy. Diana’s unexpected life\, veering between glamour and tragedy and her sudden and controversial death make for an unforgettable story. \nTWO PARTS! This is part two\, in which we cover the tragic death of Diana and the reaction from the Monarchy. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5. SUMMARY:Thomas Edison Bright Ideas - A Multimedia Biography
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Edison Bright Ideas\nThomas Edison (1847 – 1931) was a genius! He is best remembered as one of the greatest inventors of all time.  Edison was certainly that!  But the great Edison was not terribly interested in theoretical science. Instead\, (like Benjamin Franklin) he concentrated on practical discoveries such as the light bulb\, motion picture cameras\, sound recording\, and voting machines.  Thomas Edison’s bright ideas transformed the world!  His inventions changed the lives of all Americans and ushered in a period of explosive economic growth as technology created new jobs\, opportunities\, and investments. \nBut as you will discover in this fascinating multimedia biography\, Thomas Edison was also a pioneering and visionary businessman\, a philosopher\, and a mentor.  He also had some forward-thinking – and wrongheaded – views of society. We will explore the roots of his personality. You’ll see how his personal struggles with learning disabilities and hearing loss make his accomplishments all the more remarkable. \nWe will look at his unique family dynamic\, the early manifestations of his genius\, the controversies surrounding his patents\, and some of his offbeat and dubious beliefs. \nALL REGISTRATION IS THROUGH NORTH SHORE SENIOR CENTER! SUMMARY:Jackie Robinson
DESCRIPTION: Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. The dramatic story of how Branch Rickey defied the baseball establishment by promoting the major leagues the first African American players ever to walk on the field is fascinating. \nHowever\, Jackie Robinson is more than just a symbol of integration.  First\, he was a great baseball player. A great\, great player. And then we have to recognize that Jackie Robinson was a decidedly complex and interesting man both on and off the field. As the baseball overlords knew\, very few men could have stood up against the pressure he faced.   Jackie Robinson’s passionate involvement in the civil rights movement\, his advocacy of minority entrepreneurship\, his involvement in the political world\, and the business world each create a clearer and more complete picture of an important man. \nWe will examine both the famous story of his rise to the major leagues and the private story of what he had to overcome on the path to sports greatness\, including his court-martial during World War II for standing up to racism!. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing IN PERSON multimedia presentation! \n

SUMMARY:Henry Ford - Driving America Forward
DESCRIPTION:Henry Ford – Driving America Forward\n \nHenry Ford was one of the most influential Americans of all time.  As the driving force behind the modern assembly line and the father of the first truly useful and affordable automobile\, Ford reshaped the future of transportation\, manufacturing\, and industry. He paid his employees a groundbreaking high wage and employed many African Americans. As the founder of Greenfield Village\, he became an important and persuasive spokesman for preserving America’s cultural history. Through his charitable foundation\, Ford continues to help Americans in many ways. \nYet he was also a controversial and complex man who suffered a nervous breakdown and saw his pioneering company lose astounding sums of money due to his poor business practices. He was an anti-war activist and\, most troublingly\, Ford was deeply anti-Semitic. \nThis unique multimedia presentation will explore Ford’s amazing contributions as well as his controversies and attempts to paint a balanced portrait of “The People’s Tycoon.” \n  \n

SUMMARY:Who Killed JFK – Historian Presents a Modern Analysis
DESCRIPTION: Who Killed JFK?\n I’ll Tell You! \n \nThe murder of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked the nation. A suspect was quickly arrested and subsequently murdered. President Lyndon Johnson appointed a blue ribbon committee – the Warren Commission – to answer the question: who killed JFK? \nTheir conclusion was that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. Immediately\, the public was skeptical. Stephen King described Oswald as “a semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur.” How could such an insignificant loser pull off such a dastardly crime? And why did Jack Ruby\, accused of being a Mob member\, kill Oswald? \nWe have been through with whispered knowledge of conspiracies and confessions and coverups. And so the public has asked for an explanation of the “magic bullet.” \nAnd the contradictory witness statements. \nAnd Oswald’s shadowy past. \nAnd all of the “secret files.” \nAnd all of the conspiracy theories. \nAnd all of the “mysterious deaths” associated with the assassination? \nBooks and articles\, movies and documentaries have raised in innumerable questions about who killed JFK. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis\nSo who killed JFK? I will attempt to answer as many of these questions as possible. First I will attempt to separate historical fact from theory & speculation. Second\, I will show what the historical record actually indicates happened. We have access to much more information today then the Warren Commission had in 1963/4 or the House of Representatives had in 1977. Third\, we will examine what modern computer forensics can tell us about the crime. For instance\, the Warren Commission had access to the “Zapruder Film.”  Today\, we can use computers to enhance and analyze the film. We can use modern technology to analyze the path of each of the bullets that were fired. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis \nAnd we can use computers to isolate the mysterious sounds captured by a Dallas motorcycle patrolman.  In 1977\, the House of Representatives believed that the recording showed four shots fired in Dealy Plaza.  The National Academy of Science\, among many other groups\, have taken the same sound recordings and used state-of-the-art technology to analyze them. What do we know now? \nYou may not agree with my conclusions\, but you will definitely learn a lot and come away with a new perspective about the historical record of who killed JFK. \nBONUS! SUMMARY:The Crime of the Century – The Supermodel\, The Architect\, And the Insane Millionaire
DESCRIPTION:Click here to read more about this amazing story! \nAt the dawn of the 20th century\, America was riveted by the first celebrity murder case in America. Every element of this story is fascinating! \nThe murderer was already famous and so was the victim and so was the murderer’s wife. The venue was famous and so were the lawyers involved. The only thing missing was wall-to-wall cable news coverage! As I often say when I am speaking to audiences: “You can’t make this stuff up!” \nThe Crime of the Century – The Supermodel\, The Architect\, And the Insane Millionaire\nThe Crime: Stanford White\, the most famous architect in America was murdered on the rooftop of Madison Square Garden (a building he designed) by Harry K. Thaw of Pittsburgh\, the insane millionaire heir to one of America’s great fortunes.  With some justification\, Thaw obsessively believed that Stanford White had drugged and raped Thaw’s teenage wife – the very glamorous and very young showgirl\, Evelyn Nesbitt. And just to make the story even more tabloid-ready\, Ms. Nesbitt was the first supermodel in American history. You cannot make this stuff up! \nIf this amazing true crime story sounds just a little bit familiar\, it’s because the story of the murder of Stanford White by Harry K. Thaw and the involvement of glamorous Evelyn Nesbit was the basis of “Ragtime\,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning E. L. Doctorow novel\, an Oscar Award-winning movie\, and a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical\, both also named  “Ragtime” and the 1950s potboiler film “The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing.” \nThis fascinating\, one-of-a-kind multimedia presentation will bring to life the vivid celebrities\, lurid crime\, and amazing history of the first crime of the century. \nTHIS ZOOM PRESENTATION IS FREE! SUMMARY:History Vs. the Movies: Mississippi Burning
DESCRIPTION: History Vs. the Movies: Mississippi Burning\nMississippi Burning: The Civil Rights Era is one of the most exciting\, important\, and electrifying eras in American history. \nIt had everything from a cinematic standpoint: dynamic lead characters\, powerful and determined villains\, mystery\, mood\, motivation\, and manipulation. Nonetheless\, movies about the era have generally not been hits\, and despite the hype about Selma\, no great masterpiece of filmmaking has yet emerged. “Mississippi Burning”  is a brilliant film but utter nonsense from a historical point of view. “Selma” is a maddening jumble. In its sections on Martin Luther King\, it is extraordinary. In its sections on Lyndon Johnson\, it is completely misleading. “Ghosts of Mississippi” is an earnest and well-made film about the trial of the murderer of Medgar Evers. However\, unless you already knew quite a bit about Medgar Evers\, you would leave the film wondering who exactly he was. \nSome of the best films about the Civil Rights Movement have actually been made-for-TV films. Clark Johnson directed “Boycott”  for HBO\, and it combines arresting visuals with superb acting. The Rosa Parks made-for-TV movie was likewise very good. Spike Lee directed an outstanding documentary\, “Four Little Girls.”  But so far\, a genuine cinematic masterpiece about the Civil Rights Era has eluded filmmakers. \nIn this fast-moving and thought-provoking multimedia presentation\, we will look at clips from some films about the Civil Rights Movement.   Our special focus will be on “Mississippi Burning.” Using inside stories\, personal anecdotes\, and a clear timeline\, we will see how this brilliantly made film distorted history and changed America’s perceptions about the Movement. \nCheck this out: in “Mississippi Burning\,”  the FBI gets an invaluable ship to find out where the bodies are buried. The screenwriter and director had to fictionalize where the tip came from. That is because the mystery informant had never been revealed. Working with the brilliant investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell\, I was able to help figure out where the tip had come from – Jerry uncovered the identity of the mysterious “Mr. X.” Click here to find out who he was! \n.

Edison was not terribly interested in theoretical science. \nTHIS ZOOM EVENT IS FREE — It starts at 6 pm Central Time and 7 pm Eastern Time! — CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:The History Of Presidential Impeachment
DESCRIPTION:James Madison and the Founding Fathers were deeply concerned about what would\nhappen if a president lost his moral bearing and committed crimes while serving as chief executive of the land. Their concern led them to include impeachment in the Constitution as a necessary remedy for Congress to remove a corrupt president. The history of presidential impeachment is fascinating and instructive. In this multimedia presentation\, we will look at each of the four presidential impeachments. In this multimedia presentation\, we will look at each of the four presidential impeachments that went to trial. \nFirst\, we will look at why first we will look at why the 1868 Republican House Of Representatives impeached Democrat Andrew Johnson for willfully and blatantly violating a law\, the hotly contested Tenure of Office Act. \nNext\, we will examine why the 1998 Republican House Of Representatives impeached Democratic President Bill Clinton for lying under oath tour grand jury after a sex scandal. \nFinally\, we will look at the two impeachment trials of Donald Trump. As the only President to be impeached a second time (no one else came close)\, we learned about impeachment during his two trials will have significant ramifications for the future. \n\nThe first\, a mostly partisan matter\, centered on alleged corruption in the Presidents dealing with a foreign power to win an election. Although impeached by a Democratic House Of Representatives\, Trump became the first President ever to have a member of his party vote for his conviction\, The second impeachment of Pres. Trump was the most bipartisan in history. The second impeachment of Pres. Trump was the most bipartisan in history. It’s stemmed from his actions when. It’s derived from his actions when domestic terrorists invaded the capital building in Washington\, DC. \nYou won’t want to miss this IN PERSON multimedia presentation! \n

SUMMARY:Jack Ruby - Hothead\, Hitman or Patriot?
DESCRIPTION:Jack Ruby – Hothead\, Hitman\, or Patriot?\nHere is what we know for sure.  Jack Ruby was an erratic\, violent man who murdered Lee Harvey Oswald. \n \nThe most hotly debated question related to this infamous crime is WHY Jack Ruby chose to murder Lee Harvey Oswald.  Some conspiracy theorists focus on Ruby’s ties to Chicago’s organized crime Outfit and claim that he shot Oswald on orders from the Mafia in order to protect the Mob leaders who ordered JFK’s assassination.  Other theorists jump on his ties to the Dallas Police and say he was a hitman working for THEM! (The statements would seem contradictory unless you assume that the Mafia and the Dallas Police conspired to murder Oswald!) \nThis very unique\, in-depth multi-media presentation explores Jack Ruby’s dark past\, his countless acts of spontaneous violence\, and his twisted relationships with women\, colleagues\, employers\, and mobsters.  We will look at all of the major theories that attempt to explain Jack Ruby’s strange behavior. Using the documented details from his odd life and his painful death\, we will eventually see which theory best explains Jack Ruby’s decision to murder Lee Harvey Oswald. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Nellie Bly
DESCRIPTION:Nellie Bly was the of the most groundbreaking female journalists in American history! \nShe began her journalistic career before she was 20 years old. Working in a time when very few women had ever achieved a great deal of success in journalism\, Nelly Bly broke every mold and every expectation as to what a woman could do in the ‘man’s world’ of newspaper reporting Smart\, fearless\, and determined\, Nellie Bly fearlessly exposed the harsh\, unfair working conditions for mill workers in Pittsburgh\, drawing the ire of the richest people in the city. She then served as her newspaper\,s foreign correspondent in Mexico before being run out of the country for exposing governmental corruption. This dangerous assignment made the petite Ms. Bly the first woman ever to be an accredited foreign correspondent for an American newspaper! \nWanting greater challenges and rejecting the stereotypical notion that female reporters should cover “women’s stories\,” Nelly Bly moved to New York City. In her first assignment\, for Joseph Pulitzer\, she risked her life going undercover in a “mental asylum” in New York. For 10 harrowing days\, she was locked in an asylum where she was starved\, tortured\, and unable to secure her own release. Her bombshell reporting caused the New York City asylum to be shut down\, and New York agreed to major reforms in the way they treated people with mental health issues. \nToday\, Nelly Bly is probably best remembered for being the first person ever to travel around the world in less than 80 days. If you are impressed with her accomplishments\, let me add that she did all of this before she was 25 years old! \nREGISTRATION \nWhen: Oct 12\, 2021\, 11:30 AM Central Time (the US and Canada) \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYtc-mvpjMvHN3CsuxqxaPKYqIWRjDcbRkJ \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges
DESCRIPTION:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges\nYou may be asking yourself: “So who is this guy\, and why have I never heard of him?” My response is: “Challenge yourself to become enthralled with the filmmaker whose name you may not know but whose movies are unforgettable!” \nThat is exactly the challenge I gave to screenwriter Jarett Miller. Jarett\, 26\, is a frequent guest when I speak about movies. In addition to being a screenwriter who has worked on major projects like “Wonder Woman\,” “It\,” and “The Umbrella Academy\,” among others\, Jarett has an advanced degree in film and a passion for great storytelling. For this unique two-part series\, I challenged Jarett to watch some of the great Preston Sturges movies. Our course description matches what I told him! I do hope you will sign up! \nIn a span of just seven years\, Preston Sturges had an unparalleled run of making some of the greatest American movies of all time.    \nThe films of Preston Sturges are absolutely unique\, unforgettable\, and utterly brilliant. However\, although his Hollywood career lasted over 35 years\, the movies Preston Sturges wrote and directed between 1938-1945 alone were enough to cement his reputation as one of the most influential directors and respected screenwriters of all time.  After becoming the first screenwriter of the talking movie era to direct his own films\,  Preston Sturges created a unique body of work that still delights and challenges and amuses audiences 80 years later. Furthermore\, his personal life was as unexpected\, unique\, and memorable as his movies! \nJoin Jarett and me as we explore the movies written and directed by one of the great filmmakers: Preston Sturges! We will explore his films in chronological order. Join us for both parts of this great two-week program. \n
