SUMMARY:M*A*S*H
DESCRIPTION:M*A*S*H is one of the most important\, influential\, and intriguing television series of all time. \nM*A*S*H was set during the Korean War.\, However\, the creators of M*A*S*H intended to make a statement about the ongoing war in Vietnam and war in general. When it finally left the air after 11\, M*A*S*H had won a slew of Emmys\, and numerous other awards and was recognized already as one of the classic television series ever broadcast. \nThis is not a nostalgia program. Although we will watch some fabulous multimedia clips from the show\, our focus will be on how the show was created\, how M*A*S*H evolved\, and how the series influenced television and society. \nFREE REGISTRATION CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:1972 - America 50 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Our time capsule lands 50 years ago in the tumultuous year of 1972. As the Vietnam war dragged on\, the battles between Archie Bunker and his son-in-law\, ‘Meathead Mike’ Stivic accurately reflected the deep divisions in 1972 America. ‘All In The Family’  Nixon went to Russia and to China and then won overwhelming reelection in the shadow of the just emerging story of Watergate. \n1972 brought us great films\, a terrorist massacre at the Olympics\, rising wages\, and a changing style of TV.  Jackie Robinson and Harry Truman died while Dwayne Johnson and when is Paltrow were born. Mark Spitz and Olga Korbut became sports legends and don McLean anthem “American Pie” shut off the charts. You will be amazed at what a fascinating year 1972 words!

SUMMARY:Natalie Wood
DESCRIPTION:Natalie Wood was one of the most popular and glamorous actresses of the 1950s and 60s. She starred in numerous classic films including\, “Miracle on 34th St.” “Rebel Without a Cause\,” “West Side Story\,” “Gypsy\,” “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice\,” “Splendor in the Grass\,” “Sex and the Single Girl\,” & “The Great Race.” Her stunning looks\, popular performances\, and her marriages and romances made her a staple on magazine covers for 20 years. \nShe’s one of the few performers to have a significant career as a child\, teenager\, and adult. Although critics were often less than impressed by her acting ability\, she set a record by becoming only the second actress to receive three Academy Awards before she turned 25 years old! (Jennifer Lawrence and Sairose Ronan have since bested that record.) \nWhen Natalie Wood was only 43\, a mother of two\, with a great career in films and television potentially still ahead\, she died under mysterious – possibly criminal – circumstances in the Pacific Ocean. \nThis fascinating multimedia public speaking presentation will explore her troubled life\, fabulous career\, and the mysterious death of Natalie Wood.

SUMMARY:Sidney Poitier
DESCRIPTION:Sidney Poitier is\, without question\, one of the greatest actors in the history of American film. \nAdditionally\, Sidney Poitier is the man who broke the color barrier in Hollywood. Like Barack Obama or Jackie Robinson\, he was more than just a symbol. He was a man of great talent\, skill and accomplishment. His success was not only his\, but a reminder of how America had squelched the talents of so many talented citizens.  \nMany fans of the “Golden Era” of “classic films” – including myself – have had to come to grips with the racist\, segregationist nature of those movies. Judy Garland\, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant were great actors and their films remain wildly enjoyable. But look at the films as a whole and you will see the leading roles are all played by white actors. Black actors appear as slaves\, domestics\, field hands\, or drivers. As great as Garland\, Astaire and Grant were\, it’s important to remember they were given opportunities denied to Lena Horne\, the Nicholas Brothers or any black man before Sidney Poitier. The racism of classic Hollywood denied us from appreciating some great talent. Just as the quality of baseball became better when it integrated\, so did movies improve after Sidney Poitier helped open the door. A society is stronger when all its citizens can participate. \nHowever\, his career should not be seen only as historic and groundbreaking. He was a great actor! Sidney Poitier\, in his best roles\, was simply magnificent. \nWatch “The Defiant Ones\,” “Blackboard Jungle\,” “Lillies Of The Field\,” “In The Heat Of The Night\,” “To Sir\, With Love\,” and “A Patch Of Blue” and you see a great actor at the top of his game. You can even see him in a movie with Dan Aykroyd! Poitier could be as suave as Cary Grant\, as intense as Humphrey Bogart\, as relatable as Jimmy Stewart. And unlike those other great actors\, Sidney Poitier went on to have a fabulous director of money making movies! \nJoin us for a fascinating multimedia look at the life and career of the great Sidney Poitier! \n

SUMMARY:Henry Fonda
DESCRIPTION:Henry Fonda was one of the greatest movie actors of all time! \nIn a career that spanned over 50 years\, he appeared on Broadway 16 times and made over 100 movie and TV appearances. And so many of his films banned the test of time – all-time classics that are still enjoyed more than half a century after they were made!  \n After witnessing a lynching in his native Omaha\, Henry Fonda became an unshakable champion of the values of law\, respect\, dignity and compassion. His personal decency and sense of fair play is reflected in the roles he chose. So often\, a Henry Fonda movie involved him being the lone voice of reason and sanity against a mob or a policy or a jury that was anxious for blood and unwilling to think. His unforgettable portrayal of Abraham Lincoln (click here for more about this unique and powerful film)  cemented his reputation as an actor. In the decades that followed\,  roles in important films such as “The Grapes of Wrath\,” “12 Angry Men\,” “Drums along the Mohawk” & “The Longest Day” showed his remarkable range and versatility as an actor.  \nAlthough best remembered for dramas\, Henry Fonda had a surprising and wonderful flair for comedy. In “The Lady Eve” (click here to read more) he is hilarious in a role of subtle complexity.   \nAnd although Fonda  was almost invariably cast in a heroic role\, in “Once Upon a Time in the West” \ndirected by Sergio Leone\, he played a sadistic merciless villain. And he was great at it!   \nIn this insightful multimedia presentation\, we will explore Henry Fonda’s complicated personal life and his unparalleled professional career. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Harry Belafonte
DESCRIPTION:This has become one of my favorite new programs. And it is certainly one of the most surprising programs I have ever researched! \n\nWhen I began my research\, I thought I would be talking about a popular entertainer from the 1950s who introduced calypso music to America. \nAs I dug deeper\, I quickly realized that Harry Belafonte was one of the most important and influential leaders of the civil rights movement. In early  1968\, Johnny Carson turned over the Tonight Show to Harry Belafonte for an entire week! The “sit-in” as it was called\, featured Belafonte interviewing guests including Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King! \nYou’ll find out that Harry Belafonte was one of Martin Luther King’s closest friends and most trusted advisers\, deeply involved in the civil rights movement at every turn. \nSo what are you prefer my “straight history” presentations or my popular culture presentations\, this one is for you! \nThis makes for a completely unique multimedia presentation. \nWe will watch fabulous clips of Harry Belafonte performing spectacular calypso numbers –  and we will also hear him criticize Barack Obama for not doing enough to help African-Americans! \nI urge you to sign up for this program. There is no other entertainer or activist who combines the unique characteristics\, charismatic personality\, and thoughtful philosophy of Harry Belafonte! \nCLICK HERE For Free Registration! \n

SUMMARY:Gregory Peck
DESCRIPTION:If your mental picture of Gregory Peck is that of a straight-shooting\, honest\, compassionate\, masculine but sensitive man who would always have your back and always stand up for the underdog\, you’d be very close to the truth!  While far from being a perfect man\, Gregory Peck was a good man who was deeply admired within the industry and beloved by fans. When President Nixon put the liberal Democrat Gregory Peck and his so-called “enemies list\,” Peck Ward as a badge of honor. Peck was also given a true badge of honor when President Lyndon B. Johnson awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. \nAs we talk about the films of Gregory Peck\, of course\, your mind will leap to his iconic portrayal of Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” However\, Park made almost 60 films beginning in 1944 with “Days Of Glory” and concluding in 1991 with the fabulous “Other Peoples Money.” Among his great classics are “Roman Holiday\,” “The Guns of Navarone\,” “Spellbound\,” “Moby Dick\,” and Gentleman’s AGreement.” \nYou may be surprised to find that Gregory Peck was also a very committed liberal activist. He stood in favor of the Civil Rights Movement and stood against Joe McCarthy\, the war in Vietnam\, and raised money to defeat segregationist candidates in major political races. His life makes for a fascinating multimedia presentation that you will not want to miss!

SUMMARY:Walt Disney - Animating America
DESCRIPTION:It is no overstatement to say that Walt Disney is one of the most influential Americans of all time. His name alone has become synonymous with forms of entertainment and recreation known throughout the world. To call something “Disneyesque” or “Disney like” draws to mind immediately associations. \nBomus! Click here to read the unique story of Disney’s first movie star – it wasn’t Micky! \nHis boyhood had a foot in both the 19th and 20th centuries. He grew up in the center of America\, near Kansas City Missouri and the idyllic small town of Marceline Missouri which inspired Main Street USA. Many of his formative years were spent in Chicago. But it is his Hollywood years that revolutionized the way the world thinks about animation\, movies\, American history\, and vacations. He won countless Oscars and is tied with George Clooney for nominations in the most categories! \n \nWalt Disney himself was quite a contradictory figure. \nAt times Walt Disney would come off as warm\, inspiring and avuncular\, but at other times he was described as chilly\, aloof and brusque. We recognize that he was more than an idea man – Disney was a reluctant entrepreneur whose restless artistic vision sometimes risked his studio and sometimes changed the world. There are so many legends about Walt Disney: from the creation of Mickey Mouse to the question of whether he was racist and anti-Semitic\, to the ultimate urban myth: that Walt Disney was cryogenically frozen. \nIn this fun\, fast\, and fascinating biography\, we will get to the heart of Walt Disney was as a person. Using numerous video clips\, little-known anecdotes and informative insights\, this presentation on the life of Walt Disney is sure to intrigue you.

SUMMARY:America's Purpose Statement: The Declaration Of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The most important sentence ever written by an American – a sentence that has inspired people in every part of the world – is found in America’s purpose statement!  Click here to read more. The legacy of Washington\, Hancock\, Franklin\, Jefferson\, Adams\, Hamilton\, and Paul Revere challenges us even today. \n \nOn a stifling July Thursday in 1776\, our Founding Fathers agreed to a document that was completely unique in the history of the world.  There had been many revolutions over the centuries\, but never had one begun with a philosophical purpose statement. \nAlthough the Declaration of Independence has no legal power\, the Declaration has become the guiding beacon for what America was striving to become. As the events of 2020 showed\, we as a nation we are a world leader in human rights and yet\, America is still a work in progress. \n \nWhy study the Declaration of Independence? Because it is the ultimate statement of what we hope to become. It has been quoted by freedom movements in the USA and around the world. Yet many Americans know surprisingly little about it. In this exciting and thought-provoking multimedia presentation\, I will present the thrilling themes\, difficult negotiations\, contradictory\, complex and charismatic personalities and exciting events that led to the most important moment in American history. \n

SUMMARY:TV By The Decades: Television in the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:TV in the 1960s\nThe 1960s were definitely one of TV’s oddest decades! The 1960s began with Westerns dominating the ratings! The old West soap opera Bonanza became the most popular show on the air. One after another competing show was vanquished by the old-time sensibilities of an old-fashioned Western. \nAll you really need to know about the diverse nature of TV in the 1960s is found in the answer to the question: “What show finally was able to compete with Bonanza in the ratings?” The answer was a liberal\, modern\, and very controversial challenger: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. This bastion of the hip\, cutting edge liberal comedy gave young viewers quite a stark alternative to the Ponderosa! (Trivia! Bonanza\, like Dragnet\, had their stars wear the exact same clothes every week. It saved money on costumes and allowed the producers to reuse old shots from previous episodes! \nSo the 1960s were the era of Gunsmoke and Wagon Train\, Gilligan’s Island and The Beverly Hillbillies and Laugh-In and The Smothers Brothers! We will talk about how TV grew and changed as viewers who had enjoyed Combat began tuning in to Hogan’s Heroes. You won’t want to miss this fast-paced multimedia presentation! \nIN THE COMMENTS BELOW – LIST YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW OF THE 1960s! \n

SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION: \nWho were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody actually knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse. However\, the Founders did not give the role of the First Lady so much as the Founding Fathers think a moment. The nation did not even widely use the title “First Lady” itself until the 1850s! Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent a fantastic array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nIn this original series\, I will present a list of my top ten favorite First Ladies. I promise that at least a couple of my choices will be women you would have never considered! \nOf course\, you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt. But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better today by the gift of First Lady Harriet Lane? Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy\, we had a younger First Lady who became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children? (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation\, it is not merely a collection of trivia. Instead\, we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of marvelous Martha Washington\, an enslaver\, to modern Michelle Obama\, the descendent of enslaved people\, and Dr. Jill Biden\, the first First Lady with a doctorate! \n  \nCLICK HERE FOR FREE REGISTRATION! \nTHIS IS A FREE HYBRID EVENT – YOU CAN ATTEND IN PERSON OR ONLINE! \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Mafia And The Building Of Las Vegas
DESCRIPTION:Fabulous Las Vegas has gone through several fascinating eras! It was a desert town that grew when the railroads came through. Las Vegas accommodated the railroad workers\, a wide-open culture of brothels\, saloons\, and gambling developed in the dusty desert outpost. \nIn the 1940s\, Bugsy Siegel convinced the Mafia leaders of New York City that the obscure Nevada city would be the perfect spot to build a fabulous resort and casino. It would serve two essential purposes for La Casa Nostra – it would make vast amounts of money. It would serve as a clearinghouse to launder money made in illegal activities.  The fantastic Flamingo \n \nhotel was the result. It opened the door to the transformation of Las Vegas and shifting alliances\, strategies\, and leadership in the Mob. \nWe will explore the colorful personalities (including Frank Sinatra and his cronies\, the  Rat Pack)\, strategic alliances\, and unexpected twists and turns that allowed the Mob to make Las Vegas a mecca for entertainment \n \ngambling and adult fun – until the law caught up with them.

SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION: \nWho were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody really knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse. However\, the role of the First Lady was not given so much as a moment’s thought by the Founding Fathers. In fact\, the title “First Lady” itself was not even widely used until the 1850s! Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent an amazing array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nI will present a list of my top ten favorite First Ladies in this original series.  I promise that at least a couple of my choices will be women you would have never considered! \nOf course\, you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt. But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better every day in real ways by the legacy of First Lady Harriet Lane? Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy\, we had a younger First Lady who became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children? (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation! It is not merely a collection of trivia.  Rather we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of marvelous Martha Washington\, a slave owner\, to modern Michelle Obama\, the descendent of slaves! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free; I am struggling but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. Box #177 \nDeerfield\, IL 60015 \nPut ‘Martha AM’ On The Subject Line\, Please. \nPaypal: \nPayPal (Please note\, PayPal takes 10% of your donation as a fee.
