SUMMARY:TV By The Decades: Television in the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:TV in the 1960s\nThe 1960s were definitely one of TV’s oddest decades! The 1960s began with Westerns dominating the ratings! The old West soap opera Bonanza became the most popular show on the air. One after another competing show was vanquished by the old-time sensibilities of an old-fashioned Western. \nAll you really need to know about the diverse nature of TV in the 1960s is found in the answer to the question: “What show finally was able to compete with Bonanza in the ratings?” The answer was a liberal\, modern\, and very controversial challenger: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. This bastion of the hip\, cutting edge liberal comedy gave young viewers quite a stark alternative to the Ponderosa! (Trivia! Bonanza\, like Dragnet\, had their stars wear the exact same clothes every week. It saved money on costumes and allowed the producers to reuse old shots from previous episodes! \nSo the 1960s were the era of Gunsmoke and Wagon Train\, Gilligan’s Island and The Beverly Hillbillies and Laugh-In and The Smothers Brothers! We will talk about how TV grew and changed as viewers who had enjoyed Combat began tuning in to Hogan’s Heroes. You won’t want to miss this fast-paced multimedia presentation! \nIN THE COMMENTS BELOW – LIST YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW OF THE 1960s! \n

SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION: \nWho were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody actually knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse. However\, the Founders did not give the role of the First Lady so much as the Founding Fathers think a moment. The nation did not even widely use the title “First Lady” itself until the 1850s! Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent a fantastic array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nIn this original series\, I will present a list of my top ten favorite First Ladies. I promise that at least a couple of my choices will be women you would have never considered! \nOf course\, you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt. But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better today by the gift of First Lady Harriet Lane? Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy\, we had a younger First Lady who became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children? (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation\, it is not merely a collection of trivia. Instead\, we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of marvelous Martha Washington\, an enslaver\, to modern Michelle Obama\, the descendent of enslaved people\, and Dr. Jill Biden\, the first First Lady with a doctorate! \n  \nCLICK HERE FOR FREE REGISTRATION! \nTHIS IS A FREE HYBRID EVENT – YOU CAN ATTEND IN PERSON OR ONLINE! \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Mafia And The Building Of Las Vegas
DESCRIPTION:Fabulous Las Vegas has gone through several fascinating eras! It was a desert town that grew when the railroads came through. Las Vegas accommodated the railroad workers\, a wide-open culture of brothels\, saloons\, and gambling developed in the dusty desert outpost. \nIn the 1940s\, Bugsy Siegel convinced the Mafia leaders of New York City that the obscure Nevada city would be the perfect spot to build a fabulous resort and casino. It would serve two essential purposes for La Casa Nostra – it would make vast amounts of money. It would serve as a clearinghouse to launder money made in illegal activities.  The fantastic Flamingo \n \nhotel was the result. It opened the door to the transformation of Las Vegas and shifting alliances\, strategies\, and leadership in the Mob. \nWe will explore the colorful personalities (including Frank Sinatra and his cronies\, the  Rat Pack)\, strategic alliances\, and unexpected twists and turns that allowed the Mob to make Las Vegas a mecca for entertainment \n \ngambling and adult fun – until the law caught up with them.

SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world. We are the only nation to land a man on the moon. Our research universities are the envy of the world. And in the year 2000 we were confronted by a distressing reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable count the votes from a Presidential election. Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third party candidates\, badly designed ballots and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the election of 2000 was not the first time a Presidential election went in to overtime! At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation looks at how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call. We will examine what happens when both the political and  judicial systems were unable to resolve the result in a way that inspired confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long range results of the elections. The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation. And the victory of George W. Bush in the election of 2000 ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or if you feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free\, I am unemployed but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \n

SUMMARY:Rita Hayworth - American Royalty
DESCRIPTION:Rita Hayworth – American Royalty\nThe pin-up photo of Rita Hayworth hung above the bunks of World War II American soldiers\, airmen and sailors\, and airmen all over the world. She was called “The Love Goddess\,” and Fred Astaire declared her his best dance partner. In the 1940s\, Rita Hayworth was one of the most popular movie stars of her time. \nAt the height of her fame\, she married two of the most famous men in the world. First\, she accepted a proposal from the brilliant Orson Welles. They seemed like the ultimate Hollywood glamour/power couple. After that marriage failed\, “The Love Goddess was wooed and pursued by one of the world’s wealthiest and most famous princes: the fabled Aly Khan. \nThe marriage of Hollywood’s sexiest movie star and the handsome\, glamorous Muslim playboy\, socialite\, womanizer\, racehorse owner\, and jockey was a source of endless fascination. It ended unhappily\, with offers of bribes\, threats of kidnapping\, and back-and-forth rancor in newspapers worldwide. \nRita Hayworth returned to film\, but her career evaporated in a haze of alcoholism and strange personality swings. The latter was finally diagnosed as the little-known malady called Alzheimer’s Disease. \nIn this multimedia presentation\, we will celebrate the terrific talent of Rita Hayworth as seen in her classic movies. We will also explore the strange\, unexpected\, and often sad story of the private life of the glamorous “Love Goddess\,” the remarkable Rita Hayworth. \n

SUMMARY:American Royalty - Little Known Stories
DESCRIPTION:American Royalty:   Little-Known Stories \nToday\, we finish our fan-favorite presentation series on Americans who married into Royalty. \nLet’s begin with this story. Did you ever hear the amazing\, glamorous story of the lovely American socialite who married the handsome Crown Prince of Monaco? Her dynamic personality and interest in the arts shook up the little country. Your mind probably immediately jumps to Grace Kelly. However\, there was another American-born Princess of Monaco! About a half-century before Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier\, Alice Heine married Prince Albert I!! \nSome of the Americans who married into royalty are tremendously famous\, including actresses Rita Hayworth\, Grace Kelly\, Meghan Markle\, and socialite Wallis Simpson. However\, as you will find in this surprising and entertaining presentation there some great (if less remembered) American Royalty – Little Known Stories! \nFrom the beguiling Baltimore woman who married Napolean’s younger brother to the man who married the last queen of Hawaii; from the American who became Queen Noor of Jordan to the girl who married a Prince of Russia – in Chicago – these are great\, but little-known stories of Americans who married into royalty. We will even unravel the mystery of Prince Michael Romanoff\, who\, for a time\, ran the most popular restaurant in Beverley Hills! \n

SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION: \nWho were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody really knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse. However\, the role of the First Lady was not given so much as a moment’s thought by the Founding Fathers. In fact\, the title “First Lady” itself was not even widely used until the 1850s! Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent an amazing array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nI will present a list of my top ten favorite First Ladies in this original series.  I promise that at least a couple of my choices will be women you would have never considered! \nOf course\, you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt. But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better every day in real ways by the legacy of First Lady Harriet Lane? Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy\, we had a younger First Lady who became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children? (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation! It is not merely a collection of trivia.  Rather we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of marvelous Martha Washington\, a slave owner\, to modern Michelle Obama\, the descendent of slaves! \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Walt Disney - Animating America
DESCRIPTION:It is no overstatement to say that Walt Disney is one of the most influential Americans of all time. His name alone has become synonymous with forms of entertainment and recreation known throughout the world. To call something “Disneyesque” or “Disney like” draws to mind immediately associations. \nBonus! Click here to read the unique story of Disney’s first movie star – it wasn’t Micky! \nHis boyhood had a foot in both the 19th and 20th centuries. He grew up in the center of America\, near Kansas City\, Missouri\, and the idyllic small town of Marceline\, Missouri\, which inspired Main Street USA. Disney spent many of his formative years in Chicago. But his Hollywood years revolutionized the way the world thinks about animation\, movies\, American history\, and vacations. He won countless Oscars and is tied with George Clooney for nominations in most categories! \n \nWalt Disney himself was quite a contradictory figure. \nAt times Walt Disney would come off as warm\, inspiring\, and avuncular\, but at other times he was described as chilly\, aloof\, and brusque. We recognize that he was more than an idea man – Disney was a reluctant entrepreneur whose restless artistic vision sometimes risked his studio and sometimes changed the world. There are so many legends about Walt Disney: from the creation of Mickey Mouse to the question of whether he was racist and anti-Semitic\, to the ultimate urban myth: that Walt Disney was cryogenically frozen. \nIn this fun\, fast\, and fascinating biography\, we will get to the heart of Walt Disney was as a person. Using numerous video clips\, little-known anecdotes\, and informative insights\, this presentation on the life of Walt Disney is sure to intrigue you.

Join me to look at some delightful and memorable shows that you may never have seen! \nHere is a sneak peek. – We will look at “Xanadu\,” in which a struggling artist’s prayers for inspiration are answered when one of the Muses – the daughters of Zeus – roller skates down from Mount Olympus to inspire him to open a roller disco!  You are in for a fun and insightful look at shows like Finian’s Rainbow\, Call Me Madam\, Xanadu\, and Babes In Arms\, none of which was a huge smash\, yet each of which is delightful and important in its way!

SUMMARY:Alexander Graham Bell: Communicating with the Future
DESCRIPTION:Alexander Graham Bell:\nCommunicating with the Future\nIf you mention Alexander Graham Bell\, one word immediately comes to mind: telephone. Bell\, a brilliant and determined educator as well as an important inventor of devices beyond the telephone\, changed the future. The invention of the telephone revolutionized the way we communicate with one another. But could even the great Alexander Graham Bell himself anticipate that someday you might well be reading this on the phone? \nAlexander Graham Bell came from a distinguished family of educators who had dedicated themselves to helping the deaf. The recurring theme throughout Bell’s life was an attempt to open the world of sound to those who were hard of hearing. This included his wife. It also included his mother. \n  \nThe life of Alexander Graham Bell is fascinating for what we don’t know. Had Alexander Graham Bell only invented the telephone\, he would absolutely be worthy of respect for all time. But as you will learn in this multimedia biography presentation\, Bell did much more than inventing the telephone. His other inventions had an enormous impact on the technology of the time. Some are still in use\, in modified forms\, today. And then there is his work as an educator. His compassion for the hard of hearing was enormous. But he channeled his brilliant mind into finding solutions. \n \n  \nPlease join us for an interesting\, illuminating\, and intriguing look into the life of Alexander Graham Bell.

SUMMARY:Understanding The Election Of 2008
DESCRIPTION:Understanding The Election Of 2008\nIf the election of 2008 had been written as a movie script\, it could not have been more exciting. We faced the possibility that we would elect the first woman to the presidency\, the first African-American to the presidency\, or perhaps one of America’s greatest war heroes to the presidency. The nomination battles were thrilling\, the personalities were oversized\, and just when it couldn’t seem to get any more fascinating\, Sen. John McCain chose obscure Alaska  Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate! \nIn this insightful\, nonpartisan multimedia presentation\, you will learn about the backgrounds of each of the campaigns and candidates in the election of 2008. You’ll learn the very different election strategies that each pursued. We will look at the role of technology\, social media\, race\, television\, and the debates as factors in deciding an election like no other. The election of 2008 provides us a fascinating glimpse into the future of campaigning.   \nWe’ll see how social media and voter tracking began to replace conventional television advertising as a means of motivating voters.  This effort led to long lines of voters across the country. We’ll also examine how one party began to utilize restrictive voting laws as a desperate means to try and ensure victory through voter suppression. \nThe career politician and war hero against a candidate with a painfully thin resume; a vice-presidential candidate with a penchant for gaffes versus one seemingly in way over her head.  This presentation on the election of 2008 is not to be missed. \n

SUMMARY:History vs. The Movies - The Bridge on the River Kwai
DESCRIPTION:The Bridge on the River Kwai  Is One of the Greatest World War II Movies.\nIs It Accurate?\n \nThe Bridge on the River Kwai is a masterpiece of filmmaking. The story concerns British soldiers captured by the Japanese during the Second World War\, ordered to build a bridge to connect a vital railway link to help the Japanese army. \nAt first\, the British commanding officer resisted but then decided that it would be good for his men’s morale to help build a bridge that would last forever. Meanwhile\, a guerrilla team led by an American Navy man who had been held in the camp and then escaped hacked their way through a thick jungle to try and destroy the bridge. \nHistory vs. The Movies – The Bridge on the River Kwai\nA book that purported to tell the true story of the British prisoners forced to work along the Southeast Asian Railway was the basis for the screenplay. When the movie premiered\, surviving members of the British POW contingent that built the actual bridge bitterly contested this story. For example\, in the film\, the British commander is seen as collaborating with the Japanese commanding officer and ordered that the bridge be built to the highest possible specifications. While there is no denying that this is a brilliantly acted and perfectly written film featuring magnificent cinematography\, many questions remain about whether it tells the true story. \nIn this fast and fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will compare the historical events with the cinematic portrayal. This mesmerizing story is not to be missed. \nTHIS EVENT WILL BE FREE ON ZOOM. CLICK HERE FOR REGISTRATION!
