SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION: \nWho were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody really knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse. However\, the role of the First Lady was not given so much as a moment’s thought by the Founding Fathers. In fact\, the title “First Lady” itself was not even widely used until the 1850s! Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent an amazing array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nI will present a list of my top ten favorite First Ladies in this original series.  I promise that at least a couple of my choices will be women you would have never considered! \nOf course\, you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt. But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better every day in real ways by the legacy of First Lady Harriet Lane? Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy\, we had a younger First Lady who became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children? (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation! It is not merely a collection of trivia.  Rather we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of marvelous Martha Washington\, a slave owner\, to modern Michelle Obama\, the descendent of slaves! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free; I am struggling but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. SUMMARY:JFK - A Life
DESCRIPTION:JOHN F. KENNEDY – A LIFE\n \nJFK is one of our most beloved and well-known Presidents. SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world. We are the only nation to land a man on the moon. Our research universities are the envy of the world. And in the year 2000 we were confronted by a distressing reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable count the votes from a Presidential election. Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third party candidates\, badly designed ballots and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the election of 2000 was not the first time a Presidential election went in to overtime! At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation looks at how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call. We will examine what happens when both the political and  judicial systems were unable to resolve the result in a way that inspired confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long range results of the elections. The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation. And the victory of George W. Bush in the election of 2000 ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or if you feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free\, I am unemployed but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \n

SUMMARY:Rita Hayworth - American Royalty
DESCRIPTION:Rita Hayworth – American Royalty\nThe pin-up photo of Rita Hayworth hung above the bunks of World War II American soldiers\, airmen and sailors\, and airmen all over the world. She was called “The Love Goddess\,” and Fred Astaire declared her his best dance partner. In the 1940s\, Rita Hayworth was one of the most popular movie stars of her time. \nAt the height of her fame\, she married two of the most famous men in the world. First\, she accepted a proposal from the brilliant Orson Welles. They seemed like the ultimate Hollywood glamour/power couple. After that marriage failed\, “The Love Goddess was wooed and pursued by one of the world’s wealthiest and most famous princes: the fabled Aly Khan. \nThe marriage of Hollywood’s sexiest movie star and the handsome\, glamorous Muslim playboy\, socialite\, womanizer\, racehorse owner\, and jockey was a source of endless fascination. It ended unhappily\, with offers of bribes\, threats of kidnapping\, and back-and-forth rancor in newspapers worldwide. \nRita Hayworth returned to film\, but her career evaporated in a haze of alcoholism and strange personality swings. The latter was finally diagnosed as the little-known malady called Alzheimer’s Disease. \nIn this multimedia presentation\, we will celebrate the terrific talent of Rita Hayworth as seen in her classic movies. We will also explore the strange\, unexpected\, and often sad story of the private life of the glamorous “Love Goddess\,” the remarkable Rita Hayworth. \n

SUMMARY:Walt Disney - Animating America
DESCRIPTION:It is no overstatement to say that Walt Disney is one of the most influential Americans of all time. His name alone has become synonymous with forms of entertainment and recreation known throughout the world. To call something “Disneyesque” or “Disney like” draws to mind immediately associations. \nBonus! Click here to read the unique story of Disney’s first movie star – it wasn’t Micky! \nHis boyhood had a foot in both the 19th and 20th centuries. He grew up in the center of America\, near Kansas City\, Missouri\, and the idyllic small town of Marceline\, Missouri\, which inspired Main Street USA. Disney spent many of his formative years in Chicago. But his Hollywood years revolutionized the way the world thinks about animation\, movies\, American history\, and vacations. He won countless Oscars and is tied with George Clooney for nominations in most categories! \n \nWalt Disney himself was quite a contradictory figure. \nAt times Walt Disney would come off as warm\, inspiring\, and avuncular\, but at other times he was described as chilly\, aloof\, and brusque. We recognize that he was more than an idea man – Disney was a reluctant entrepreneur whose restless artistic vision sometimes risked his studio and sometimes changed the world. There are so many legends about Walt Disney: from the creation of Mickey Mouse to the question of whether he was racist and anti-Semitic\, to the ultimate urban myth: that Walt Disney was cryogenically frozen. \nIn this fun\, fast\, and fascinating biography\, we will get to the heart of Walt Disney was as a person. Using numerous video clips\, little-known anecdotes\, and informative insights\, this presentation on the life of Walt Disney is sure to intrigue you.

SUMMARY:Offbeat Broadway
DESCRIPTION:The Tony Awards are right around the corner\, so let’s celebrate with laughs and some great music! I’ve learned that some Broadway musicals that are not big hits still produce unforgettable music\, delightful characters\, and fascinating plots. \nIf you think a musical about an Irish dreamer stealing a pot of gold from a \nleprechaun and coming to America where he gets involved in a  Civil Rights dispute sounds farfetched\, let’s learn about Finian’s Rainbow! After all\, who would have guessed a musical about singing pussycats in a London alley would be a hit!? Join me to look at some delightful and memorable shows that you may never have seen! \nHere is a sneak peek. – We will look at “Xanadu\,” in which a struggling artist’s prayers for inspiration are answered when one of the Muses – the daughters of Zeus – roller skates down from Mount Olympus to inspire him to open a roller disco!  You are in for a fun and insightful look at shows like Finian’s Rainbow\, Call Me Madam\, Xanadu\, and Babes In Arms\, none of which was a huge smash\, yet each of which is delightful and important in its way!

SUMMARY:Alexander Graham Bell: Communicating with the Future
DESCRIPTION:Alexander Graham Bell:\nCommunicating with the Future\nIf you mention Alexander Graham Bell\, one word immediately comes to mind: telephone. Bell\, a brilliant and determined educator as well as an important inventor of devices beyond the telephone\, changed the future. The invention of the telephone revolutionized the way we communicate with one another. But could even the great Alexander Graham Bell himself anticipate that someday you might well be reading this on the phone? \nAlexander Graham Bell came from a distinguished family of educators who had dedicated themselves to helping the deaf. The recurring theme throughout Bell’s life was an attempt to open the world of sound to those who were hard of hearing. This included his wife. It also included his mother. \n  \nThe life of Alexander Graham Bell is fascinating for what we don’t know. Had Alexander Graham Bell only invented the telephone\, he would absolutely be worthy of respect for all time. But as you will learn in this multimedia biography presentation\, Bell did much more than inventing the telephone. His other inventions had an enormous impact on the technology of the time. Some are still in use\, in modified forms\, today. And then there is his work as an educator. His compassion for the hard of hearing was enormous. But he channeled his brilliant mind into finding solutions. \n \n  \nPlease join us for an interesting\, illuminating\, and intriguing look into the life of Alexander Graham Bell.

SUMMARY:Understanding The Election Of 2008
DESCRIPTION:Understanding The Election Of 2008\nIf the election of 2008 had been written as a movie script\, it could not have been more exciting. We faced the possibility that we would elect the first woman to the presidency\, the first African-American to the presidency\, or perhaps one of America’s greatest war heroes to the presidency. The nomination battles were thrilling\, the personalities were oversized\, and just when it couldn’t seem to get any more fascinating\, Sen. John McCain chose obscure Alaska  Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate! \nIn this insightful\, nonpartisan multimedia presentation\, you will learn about the backgrounds of each of the campaigns and candidates in the election of 2008. You’ll learn the very different election strategies that each pursued. We will look at the role of technology\, social media\, race\, television\, and the debates as factors in deciding an election like no other. The election of 2008 provides us a fascinating glimpse into the future of campaigning.   \nWe’ll see how social media and voter tracking began to replace conventional television advertising as a means of motivating voters.  This effort led to long lines of voters across the country. We’ll also examine how one party began to utilize restrictive voting laws as a desperate means to try and ensure victory through voter suppression. \nThe career politician and war hero against a candidate with a painfully thin resume; a vice-presidential candidate with a penchant for gaffes versus one seemingly in way over her head.  This presentation on the election of 2008 is not to be missed. \n

SUMMARY:The Life Of Robin Williams
DESCRIPTION:The Life Of Robin Williams\nRobin Williams was one of the funniest comedians of all time.  His improvisational skills were almost other-worldly!  Yet behind the comic persona lay a complex man- intensely charitable and compassionate but plagued by insecurity\, battling addictions\, and vulnerable to depression. In this multi-media presentation\, we will examine the fascinating life and sad death of Robin Williams – and watch as his fantastic career took shape! \nWhile early audiences remember him as Mork\, others remember his free-form\, intense improvisational riffs.  We will also celebrate his long\, accomplished and acclaimed career as a film actor. \n \nLike fellow comedian Steve Martin\, Robin Williams became a superb movie actor. Over time\, he took on acting roles in almost every genre. Robin Williams was excellent in drama\, comedy\, animation\, thrillers – and made an indelible impression in all. He could play a research neurologist in one film and a cross-dressing nanny in the next. Williams was nominated several times for Oscars\, including a win playing a compassionate and serious psychotherapist in “Good Will Hunting.” \nWe will look at clips from a wides sampling of his movie work\, including “Mrs. Doubtfire\,” “Aladdin\,” “Awakenings\,” “One Hour Photo\,” “Good Morning\, Vietnam\,” “A Night At The Museum\,” “Good Will Hunting” and many more. \nAlthough we will undoubtedly talk about Robin Williams’ tragic death\, most of this fascinating presentation will focus on the extraordinary life and truly unparalleled talent of one of the most unique and funniest men of all time – the great Robin Williams. \n

SUMMARY:History vs. The Movies - The Bridge on the River Kwai
DESCRIPTION:The Bridge on the River Kwai  Is One of the Greatest World War II Movies.\nIs It Accurate?\n \nThe Bridge on the River Kwai is a masterpiece of filmmaking. The story concerns British soldiers captured by the Japanese during the Second World War\, ordered to build a bridge to connect a vital railway link to help the Japanese army. \nAt first\, the British commanding officer resisted but then decided that it would be good for his men’s morale to help build a bridge that would last forever. Meanwhile\, a guerrilla team led by an American Navy man who had been held in the camp and then escaped hacked their way through a thick jungle to try and destroy the bridge. \nHistory vs. The Movies – The Bridge on the River Kwai\nA book that purported to tell the true story of the British prisoners forced to work along the Southeast Asian Railway was the basis for the screenplay. When the movie premiered\, surviving members of the British POW contingent that built the actual bridge bitterly contested this story. For example\, in the film\, the British commander is seen as collaborating with the Japanese commanding officer and ordered that the bridge be built to the highest possible specifications. While there is no denying that this is a brilliantly acted and perfectly written film featuring magnificent cinematography\, many questions remain about whether it tells the true story. \nIn this fast and fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will compare the historical events with the cinematic portrayal. This mesmerizing story is not to be missed. \nTHIS EVENT WILL BE FREE ON ZOOM. CLICK HERE FOR REGISTRATION!

DESCRIPTION:Sidney Poitier is\, without question\, one of the greatest actors in the history of American film. \nAdditionally\, Sidney Poitier is the man who broke the color barrier in Hollywood. Like Barack Obama or Jackie Robinson\, he was more than just a symbol. He was a man of great talent\, skill and accomplishment. His success was not only his\, but a reminder of how America had squelched the talents of so many talented citizens.  \nMany fans of the “Golden Era” of “classic films” – including myself – have had to come to grips with the racist\, segregationist nature of those movies. Judy Garland\, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant were great actors and their films remain wildly enjoyable. But look at the films as a whole and you will see the leading roles are all played by white actors. Black actors appear as slaves\, domestics\, field hands\, or drivers. As great as Garland\, Astaire and Grant were\, it’s important to remember they were given opportunities denied to Lena Horne\, the Nicholas Brothers or any black man before Sidney Poitier. The racism of classic Hollywood denied us from appreciating some great talent. Just as the quality of baseball became better when it integrated\, so did movies improve after Sidney Poitier helped open the door. A society is stronger when all its citizens can participate. \nHowever\, his career should not be seen only as historic and groundbreaking. He was a great actor! Sidney Poitier\, in his best roles\, was simply magnificent. \nWatch “The Defiant Ones\,” “Blackboard Jungle\,” “Lillies Of The Field\,” “In The Heat Of The Night\,” “To Sir\, With Love\,” and “A Patch Of Blue” and you see a great actor at the top of his game. You can even see him in a movie with Dan Aykroyd! Poitier could be as suave as Cary Grant\, as intense as Humphrey Bogart\, as relatable as Jimmy Stewart. And unlike those other great actors\, Sidney Poitier went on to have a fabulous director of money making movies! \nJoin us for a fascinating multimedia look at the life and career of the great Sidney Poitier! \n

SUMMARY:Diana: Life Of The The People's Princess
DESCRIPTION:Diana: Glamorous And Tragic Life Of a Princess \nFREE ZOOM PRESENTATION \nLady Diana Spencer was the “People’s Princess” beloved throughout the world for her compassion as much as for her glamour. \nSweet\, pretty Lady Diana Spencer was a shy and charming kindergarten teacher when she caught the eye of Prince Charles\, heir to the throne of Great Britain. At first\, to the public\, her story seemed like a fairytale. A pretty young girl had been plucked out of obscurity to marry the dashing Prince. But the truth of Diana’s private life was very different from the public perception.   \nIn 1981\, an estimated 750 million people around the world watched the beautiful 20-year-old Diana Spencer marry her handsome Prince Charles amidst all the pomp and circumstance of the British Empire. But barely more than 10 years later\, she was bitterly divorced with two children\, suffering from severe depression and eating disorders\, brought out by the realization that her cool and diffident husband had been having an affair with a long-time girlfriend\, Camilla Parker-Bowles. \nAfter Princess Diana’s ugly public divorce\, she became an outcast from the British Royal family. Despite that\, she became even more beloved by the British public! She was seen as an affectionate and doting mother\, an icon of fashion style\, and\, most importantly\, a tireless champion for humanitarian causes. Diana met with Mother Teresa in an effort to bring attention to the global aid epidemic. She risked her life to try and read war zones of the scourge of land mines. \nWherever she went\, whatever she did\, and whomever she dated\, Diana’s every move was followed by the insatiable British press. They detailed Diana’s every date\, every vacation\, and every outfit. \nWhen Princess Diana died in a horrible car crash\, she was mourned by the world. The outpouring of grief in Britain forever changed the nation’s view of the monarchy. Diana’s unexpected life\, veering between glamour and tragedy\, and her sudden and controversial death make for an unforgettable story. \nCLICK HERE FOR REGISTRATION FOR THIS FREE ZOOM PRESENTATION \n
