SUMMARY:The Life Of Robin Williams
DESCRIPTION:The Life Of Robin Williams\nRobin Williams was one of the funniest comedians of all time.  His improvisational skills were almost other-worldly!  Yet behind the comic persona lay a complex man- intensely charitable and compassionate but plagued by insecurity\, battling addictions\, and vulnerable to depression. In this multi-media presentation\, we will examine the fascinating life and sad death of Robin Williams – and watch as his fantastic career took shape! \nWhile early audiences remember him as Mork\, others remember his free-form\, intense improvisational riffs.  We will also celebrate his long\, accomplished and acclaimed career as a film actor. \n \nLike fellow comedian Steve Martin\, Robin Williams became a superb movie actor. Over time\, he took on acting roles in almost every genre. Robin Williams was excellent in drama\, comedy\, animation\, thrillers – and made an indelible impression in all. He could play a research neurologist in one film and a cross-dressing nanny in the next. Williams was nominated several times for Oscars\, including a win playing a compassionate and serious psychotherapist in “Good Will Hunting.” \nWe will look at clips from a wides sampling of his movie work\, including “Mrs. Doubtfire\,” “Aladdin\,” “Awakenings\,” “One Hour Photo\,” “Good Morning\, Vietnam\,” “A Night At The Museum\,” “Good Will Hunting” and many more. \nAlthough we will undoubtedly talk about Robin Williams’ tragic death\, most of this fascinating presentation will focus on the extraordinary life and truly unparalleled talent of one of the most unique and funniest men of all time – the great Robin Williams. \n

SUMMARY:History vs. The Movies - The Bridge on the River Kwai
DESCRIPTION:The Bridge on the River Kwai  Is One of the Greatest World War II Movies.\nIs It Accurate?\n \nThe Bridge on the River Kwai is a masterpiece of filmmaking. The story concerns British soldiers captured by the Japanese during the Second World War\, ordered to build a bridge to connect a vital railway link to help the Japanese army. \nAt first\, the British commanding officer resisted but then decided that it would be good for his men’s morale to help build a bridge that would last forever. Meanwhile\, a guerrilla team led by an American Navy man who had been held in the camp and then escaped hacked their way through a thick jungle to try and destroy the bridge. \nHistory vs. The Movies – The Bridge on the River Kwai\nA book that purported to tell the true story of the British prisoners forced to work along the Southeast Asian Railway was the basis for the screenplay. When the movie premiered\, surviving members of the British POW contingent that built the actual bridge bitterly contested this story. For example\, in the film\, the British commander is seen as collaborating with the Japanese commanding officer and ordered that the bridge be built to the highest possible specifications. While there is no denying that this is a brilliantly acted and perfectly written film featuring magnificent cinematography\, many questions remain about whether it tells the true story. \nIn this fast and fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will compare the historical events with the cinematic portrayal. This mesmerizing story is not to be missed. \nTHIS EVENT WILL BE FREE ON ZOOM. CLICK HERE FOR REGISTRATION!

SUMMARY:Sidney Poitier
DESCRIPTION:Sidney Poitier is\, without question\, one of the greatest actors in the history of American film. \nAdditionally\, Sidney Poitier is the man who broke the color barrier in Hollywood. Like Barack Obama or Jackie Robinson\, he was more than just a symbol. He was a man of great talent\, skill and accomplishment. His success was not only his\, but a reminder of how America had squelched the talents of so many talented citizens.  \nMany fans of the “Golden Era” of “classic films” – including myself – have had to come to grips with the racist\, segregationist nature of those movies. Judy Garland\, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant were great actors and their films remain wildly enjoyable. But look at the films as a whole and you will see the leading roles are all played by white actors. Black actors appear as slaves\, domestics\, field hands\, or drivers. As great as Garland\, Astaire and Grant were\, it’s important to remember they were given opportunities denied to Lena Horne\, the Nicholas Brothers or any black man before Sidney Poitier. The racism of classic Hollywood denied us from appreciating some great talent. Just as the quality of baseball became better when it integrated\, so did movies improve after Sidney Poitier helped open the door. A society is stronger when all its citizens can participate. \nHowever\, his career should not be seen only as historic and groundbreaking. He was a great actor! Sidney Poitier\, in his best roles\, was simply magnificent. \nWatch “The Defiant Ones\,” “Blackboard Jungle\,” “Lillies Of The Field\,” “In The Heat Of The Night\,” “To Sir\, With Love\,” and “A Patch Of Blue” and you see a great actor at the top of his game. You can even see him in a movie with Dan Aykroyd! Poitier could be as suave as Cary Grant\, as intense as Humphrey Bogart\, as relatable as Jimmy Stewart. And unlike those other great actors\, Sidney Poitier went on to have a fabulous director of money making movies! \nJoin us for a fascinating multimedia look at the life and career of the great Sidney Poitier! \n

SUMMARY:Diana: Life Of The The People's Princess
DESCRIPTION:Diana: Glamorous And Tragic Life Of a Princess \nFREE ZOOM PRESENTATION \nLady Diana Spencer was the “People’s Princess” beloved throughout the world for her compassion as much as for her glamour. \nSweet\, pretty Lady Diana Spencer was a shy and charming kindergarten teacher when she caught the eye of Prince Charles\, heir to the throne of Great Britain. At first\, to the public\, her story seemed like a fairytale. A pretty young girl had been plucked out of obscurity to marry the dashing Prince. But the truth of Diana’s private life was very different from the public perception.   \nIn 1981\, an estimated 750 million people around the world watched the beautiful 20-year-old Diana Spencer marry her handsome Prince Charles amidst all the pomp and circumstance of the British Empire. But barely more than 10 years later\, she was bitterly divorced with two children\, suffering from severe depression and eating disorders\, brought out by the realization that her cool and diffident husband had been having an affair with a long-time girlfriend\, Camilla Parker-Bowles. \nAfter Princess Diana’s ugly public divorce\, she became an outcast from the British Royal family. Despite that\, she became even more beloved by the British public! She was seen as an affectionate and doting mother\, an icon of fashion style\, and\, most importantly\, a tireless champion for humanitarian causes. Diana met with Mother Teresa in an effort to bring attention to the global aid epidemic. She risked her life to try and read war zones of the scourge of land mines. \nWherever she went\, whatever she did\, and whomever she dated\, Diana’s every move was followed by the insatiable British press. They detailed Diana’s every date\, every vacation\, and every outfit. \nWhen Princess Diana died in a horrible car crash\, she was mourned by the world. The outpouring of grief in Britain forever changed the nation’s view of the monarchy. Diana’s unexpected life\, veering between glamour and tragedy\, and her sudden and controversial death make for an unforgettable story. \nCLICK HERE FOR REGISTRATION FOR THIS FREE ZOOM PRESENTATION \n

SUMMARY:M*A*S*H
DESCRIPTION:M*A*S*H is one of the most important\, influential\, and intriguing television series of all time. \nM*A*S*H was set during the Korean War.\, However\, the creators of M*A*S*H intended to make a statement about the ongoing war in Vietnam and war in general. When it finally left the air after 11\, M*A*S*H had won a slew of Emmys\, numerous other awards and was recognized already as one of the classic television series ever broadcast. \nThis is not a nostalgia program. Although we will watch some fabulous multimedia clips from the show\, our focus will be on how the show was created\, how M*A*S*H evolved\, and how the series influenced television and society.

SUMMARY:Lincoln's Greatest Speeches (Afternoon)
DESCRIPTION:This brand-new presentation will introduce you to the most important speeches given by our greatest president. Abraham Lincoln was a master of communication. Like FDR during World War II\, Lincoln constantly explained to Americans why we were fighting the Civil War. Although many people throughout the Union opposed him\, President Abraham Lincoln never stopped trying to bring about national consensus\, conciliation\, and cooperation. \nYou are probably very familiar with the Gettysburg address. And you may remember that President Lincoln famously called on the nation to deal with defeated traitors\, “With malice towards none and charity towards all..” but in this insightful history presentation\, we will go pull out the surface. We will look at how Lincoln used language to make sure his positions were clearly understood\, that people felt empowered\, and with the hope that he could heal a broken nation.  \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION! \nTHE EVENT IS IN-PERSON ONLY; IT WILL NOT BE STREAMED OR RECORDED!  \n

SUMMARY:2022 Election Preview
DESCRIPTION:The midterm elections of 2022 will have an immense impact on the last two years of President Joe Biden’s first term. \nIf the Republicans win the Senate\, they have vowed to use their clout to block any Supreme Court nominations. Suppose they win control of the House of Representatives. In that case\, it is unlikely that President Biden will be able to pass any sweeping changes regarding gun safety\, expanding the social safety net\, slowing climate change\, or expanding voting rights. \nJust as the Democratic wave of 2018 shut down much of the agenda of former President Trump\, this election could be crucial in establishing how America will deal with many issues over the next two tears. I will highlight several critical Gubenprtorial elections across the country and the major Senate races that will determine control of the Upper Chamber. \nWe will also look at the critical elections here in Illinois and examine how this election will begin to shape the field for the 2024 presidential election. \n

SUMMARY:Betty White: America's Favorite Potty Mouthed Grandma
DESCRIPTION:The fabulous Betty White has been called an American national treasure – and rightly so! Up until her death at 99\, Betty White was a beacon of positivity even in difficult years! Witty\, working\, and happy\, Betty white it’s a beacon of positivity even in difficult times! \nBetty White was voted one of America’s most beloved entertainers year in and year out.  In 2018\, she was chosen as the most trusted person in America! You know her as the seemingly sweet we but secretly scheming sexpot Sue Anne Nivens on the iconic  “Mary Tyler Moore Show\,” the endearing\, naïve\, and trusting Rose Nyland on the classic  “Golden Girls\,” and the outrageous and somewhat loopy Elka Ostrovsky on ” Hot in Cleveland.” \n Betty White has been a staple on talk shows\, a host and panelist on game shows\, and has even performed in some popular movies\, including one classic film drama about politics in which she played a U.S. Senator! \nYou may not know that Betty White was a pioneer in the early days of television\, being the first woman to produce her own show!  The amazing Ms. White is a best-selling author and tireless advocate for animals. Most importantly\, she is widely considered one of the nicest people in all show business. This warm\, charming and funny presentation is loaded with hilarious video clips and great stories about the one and only Betty White. \n

SUMMARY:Jack Ruby - Hothead\, Hitman or Patriot?
DESCRIPTION:Jack Ruby – Hothead\, Hitman\, or Patriot?\nHere is what we know for sure. Jack Ruby was an erratic\, violent man who murdered Lee Harvey Oswald. \n \nThe most hotly debated question about this infamous crime is WHY Jack Ruby chose to murder Lee Harvey Oswald. Some conspiracy theorists focus on Ruby’s ties to Chicago’s organized crime Outfit and claim that he shot Oswald on orders from the Mafia to protect the Mob leaders who ordered JFK’s assassination. Other theorists jump on his ties to the Dallas Police and say he was a hitman working for THEM! (The statements seem contradictory unless you assume that the Mafia and the Dallas Police conspired to murder Oswald!) \nThis unique\, in-depth multi-media presentation explores Jack Ruby’s dark past\, his countless acts of spontaneous violence\, and his twisted relationships with women\, colleagues\, employers\, and mobsters. We will look at all the major theories attempting to explain Jack Ruby’s strange behavior. Using the documented details from his odd life and his painful death\, we will eventually see which theory best explains Jack Ruby’s fateful decision to murder Lee Harvey Oswald. \nTHIS PROGRAM WILL BE FREE ON ZOOM. \nSTARTING TIME IS 1:00 PM CENTRAL TIME\, 2:00 PM EASTERN TIME! \nREGISTRATION IS NOT REQUIRED\, BUT IF YOU CLICK HERE\, YOU CAN GET THE ZOOM LINK AND A REMINDER FOR THE EVENT!\nPlease do not email me for the zoom link. SUMMARY:Understanding the Election of 2022
DESCRIPTION:Election 2022 upended every historical norm for a midterm election! We know who won\, but now we have time for the more profound question. Why did it happen the way it unfolded? Understanding the election of 2022 means that we have to do a deep dive into who voted and why. I’ll offer ten takeaways that explain what we can learn from the 2022 midterm elections. \nWe will examine what each party learned and what it means for the future. Why did the expected ‘Red Wave’ not happen? The unique vote totals raise so many questions! What is abortion a vital issue? Did Hispanic voters really turn toward the Republican party? Why are some Republicans calling for the abolishment of the 26th amendment? What do the results mean for the next presidential election? All of this and more in a fascinating 90-minute presentation. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Nellie Bly And Dorothy Kilgallen
DESCRIPTION:Nellie Bly and Dorothy Kilgallen are two of the most groundbreaking female journalists in American history. \n  \nNellie Bly fearlessly exposed the harsh\, unfair working conditions for mill workers in Pittsburgh\, drawing the ire of the wealthiest people in the city.  She served as her newspaper’s foreign correspondent in Mexico before being run out of the country for exposing governmental corruption\, risked her life going undercover in a “mental asylum” in New York\, and set a record for the fastest trip around the world – all before she was 25 years old! \nDorothy Kilgallen was the first woman journalist in American history to be a murder reporter\, breaking front-page scoop after scoop before she imitated Nellie Bly and competed in a race around the world -All before she was 25 years old.  She later became an important celebrity columnist\, broke major stories\, and was the first mainstream reporter to challenge the Warren Commission.  As she was preparing a book purporting to prove that the murder of President John F Kennedy was a conspiracy\, Dorothy Kilgallen died under very mysterious circumstances. \n  \nNellie Bly and Dorothy Kilgallen used the power of the press to try and help make society fairer.  And each opened the door for many more women to become journalists.  This multimedia presentation is exciting\, fascinating\, and even a little scary as we follow these women who risked their lives in pursuit of the truth. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00.  If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free; I am struggling but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. SUMMARY:George Gershwin
DESCRIPTION:In a very short career\, George Gershwin changed American music forever. He was one of the most beloved composers of music for Broadway. his songs and shows continue to be revived on the New York stage and in theaters around the world. The list of standards written by Gershwin is seemingly endless.  “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off * Nice Work If You Can Get It * Shall We Dance * and  “They Can’t Take That Away From Me * are just a sample of the many popular songs written by Gershwin; most with unforgettable\, urbane lyrics by his ferociously talented brother\, Ira. \nGeorge Gershwin continued to challenge himself by creating music in challenging and unique styles. He wrote “Porgy and Bess\,” including the iconic “Summertime” in a blues style\, and wrote the unforgettable “Rhapsody in Blue\,” fusing jazz and classical elements and music for ballet\, “An American In Paris.”  \nHe had just conquered Hollywood with his first movie musical\, the sublime “Shall We Dance” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers\, when he died of a brain tumor. The master of American music was just 38. \nIn this lively and fascinating multimedia presentation\, you will find yourself amazed by the amazing biography\, unparalleled talent\, and enduring legacy of George Gershwin. \n

SUMMARY:The West Wing
DESCRIPTION:The West Wing is one of the most critically acclaimed television shows of all time. \nLIVE IN PERSON AND ON ZOOM \nThe brainchild of Aaron Sorkin reminded us that many people who go into government do so because they care deeply about our country and are genuinely idealistic about making life better. Patriotism is seen as an admirable quality. \nUsing interviews\, documentary research\, and numerous video clips\, I’ll document why and how The West Wing transformed TV and transfixed the audience!

SUMMARY:The Marx Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Marx Brothers were much\, much better than you remember! Their humor uplifted American spirits during the Depression and established new standards for comedy. The Marx Brothers’ combination of odd and unique talents\, including a harp-playing mime\, a Jewish comic with the worst Italian accent and the most distinctive piano-playing style\, and one of the greatest monologists of all time\, have delighted and baffled classic movie fans since the Depression. They performed alongside Lucille Ball\, sang music written by Irving Berlin and acted in comedies written by the great George S. Kaufmann\, yet many people dimly think of the as analogous to The Three Stooges. \nBut when you look deeper\, you see an amazing immigrant success story\, discover how American popular culture was changing\, and meet four remarkably different and interesting men whose films rank among the best comedies of all time. “Duck Soup” is rightly considered one of the greatest films ever made about politics. Both that film and “A Night At The Opera” are on the AFI list of the 100 best movies! Whether you are a long-time fan of the Marx Brothers\, a skeptic\, or completely unfamiliar with their work\, you are in for a treat with this fun multimedia presentation! \nTHIS PRESENTATION IS LIVE AND WILL NOT BE STREAMED. THE PRESENTATION IS AT THE HIGHLAND PARK SENIOR\, LOCATED AT THE BEAUTIFUL HIGHLAND PARK COUNTRY CLUB. REGISTER THROUGH THEM!
