SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION:Who were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody really knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse.  However\, the role of the First Lady was not given so much as a moment’s thought by the Founding Fathers.  The title “First Lady” itself was not even widely used until the 1850s!  Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent a fantastic array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nI will list my top ten favorite First Ladies in this original series.  I promise that at least a couple of my choices will be women you would have never considered! \nOf course\, you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt.  But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better every day in fundamental ways by the legacy of First Lady Harriet Lane?  Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy\, we had a younger First Lady who became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children?  (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation!  It is not merely a collection of trivia.  Instead\, we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of the marvelous Martha Washington\, an enslaver\, to the modern Michelle Obama\, the descendant of enslaved people! \nREGISTRATION – this event is live and in person.  The Northbrook Senior Center hosts it\, and there is a charge for attending.  Registration is required. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cole Porter - Risque Master Of American Music
DESCRIPTION:Cole Porter is one of the greatest songwriters in American history. His melodies were sublime. His lyrics were creative\, witty\, sophisticated\, original\, and naughty. Cole Porter was the ultimate European-oriented sophisticate – yet he was born in tiny Peru\, Indiana! \nPorter’s list of songs includes some of the most incredible entries in the great American Songbook!  Consider: \nLET’S DO IT (LET’S FALL IN LOVE) (1928) \n NIGHT AND DAY (1932) \nANYTHING GOES (1934) \n DON’T FENCE ME IN (1934) \nI GET A KICK OUT OF YOU (1934) \nBEGIN THE BEGUINE (1935) \n I’VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN (1936) \nIT’S DE-LOVELY (1936) \nPorter’s legacy was further assured by brilliant Broadway shows like “Kiss Me Kate” and “Can-Can.” But beneath the surface of this bon-vivant lay a tortured soul. Cole Porter lived in both psychic and physical pain for much of his life. His life story\, personality\, and music combine for a memorable multimedia presentation! \n

SUMMARY:Best Actors Never to Win an Oscar
DESCRIPTION:America has been in love with the movies for over 100 years. And every year the race for the Oscar is closely watched by movie fans around the world. Winning the Academy award connotes something special in the history of film. Movie buffs debate the winners and losers\, the snubs\, and the surprises.  But since the 1920s\, the Academy Awards have built a long historical record that we can examine. And that record definitely contains some extremely surprising omissions.   In this fun and fast multimedia presentation\, we will look at which highly-regarded actors have never won a competitive Academy Award \n \nWe will not be considering one specific film performance but the larger question of why a great body of work never yielded an Oscar. For instance\, how did great actors from Hollywood’s golden past\, such as Peter O’Toole\, Cary Grant\, & Richard Burton\, never win an Academy Award? And how has the precious Oscar statuette eluded actors working today\, such as  Tom Cruise\, Johnny Depp\,\nand Harrison Ford\, who have made some of the most highly acclaimed films ever? Don’t miss this fun presentation!

SUMMARY:Nellie Bly And Dorothy Kilgallen
DESCRIPTION:Nellie Bly and Dorothy Kilgallen are two of American history’s most groundbreaking female journalists. \n  \nNellie Bly fearlessly exposed the harsh\, unfair working conditions for mill workers in Pittsburgh\, drawing the ire of the wealthiest people in the city.  She served as her newspaper’s foreign correspondent in Mexico before being run out of the country for exposing governmental corruption\, risked her life going undercover in a “mental asylum” in New York\, and set a record for the fastest trip around the world – all before she was 25 years old! \nDorothy Kilgallen was the first woman journalist in American history to be a murder reporter\, breaking front-page scoop after scoop before she imitated Nellie Bly and competed in a race around the world -All before she was 25 years old.  She later became an important celebrity columnist\, broke important stories\, and was the first mainstream reporter to challenge the Warren Commission.  As she was preparing a book purporting to prove that the murder of President John F Kennedy was a conspiracy\, Dorothy Kilgallen died under very mysterious circumstances. \n  \nNellie Bly and Dorothy Kilgallen used the power of the press to try and help make society fairer.  And each opened the door for many more women to become journalists.  This multimedia presentation is exciting\, fascinating\, and even a little scary as we follow these women who risked their lives in pursuit of the truth.

SUMMARY:Betty White: America's Favorite Potty Mouthed Grandma
DESCRIPTION:The fabulous Betty White has been called an American national treasure – and rightly so! Up until her death at 99\, Betty White was a beacon of positivity even in difficult years! Witty\, working\, and happy\, Betty white it’s a beacon of positivity even in difficult times! \nBetty White was voted one of America’s most beloved entertainers year in and year out.  In 2018\, she was chosen as the most trusted person in America! You know her as the seemingly sweet we but secretly scheming sexpot Sue Anne Nivens on the iconic  “Mary Tyler Moore Show\,” the endearing\, naïve\, and trusting Rose Nyland on the classic  “Golden Girls\,” and the outrageous and somewhat loopy Elka Ostrovsky on ” Hot in Cleveland.” \n Betty White has been a staple on talk shows\, a host and panelist on game shows\, and has even performed in some popular movies\, including one classic film drama about politics in which she played a U.S. Senator! \nYou may not know that Betty White was a pioneer in the early days of television\, being the first woman to produce her own show!  The amazing Ms. White is a best-selling author and tireless advocate for animals. Most importantly\, she is widely considered one of the nicest people in all show business. This warm\, charming and funny presentation is loaded with hilarious video clips and great stories about the one and only Betty White. \n

SUMMARY:The West Wing
DESCRIPTION:The West Wing is one of the most critically acclaimed television shows of all time. \nLIVE IN PERSON \nThe brainchild of Aaron Sorkin reminded us that many people who go into government do so because they care deeply about our country and are genuinely idealistic about making life better. Patriotism is seen as an admirable quality. \nUsing interviews\, documentary research\, and numerous video clips\, I’ll document why and how The West Wing transformed TV and transfixed the audience!

SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world. We are the only nation to land a man on the moon. Our research universities are the envy of the world. And in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election. Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the election of 2000 was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime! At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation shows how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call. We will examine what happens when both the political and judicial systems cannot resolve the result in a way that inspires confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long-range results of the elections. The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation. And the victory of George W. Bush in the election of 2000 ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Jewish Heroes Of The Civil Rights Movement
DESCRIPTION:Some people incorrectly think of the civil rights movement as African-American people versus white people. \nThe truth is that many white people\, including many Jewish Americans\, provided physical\, emotional\, and monetary support to the movement. It would be more accurate to describe the civil rights battles of the 1950s and 60s as a battle between good and evil. \nThis inspiring and fascinating multimedia presentation will examine how Jewish Americans committed themselves to Dr. King’s goals of freedom\, voting rights\, community\, and an end to discrimination. We will examine \n“King repeatedly used the Jewish experience as a model of success over oppression. He respected and admired the values taught by Judaism and\, as a deeply religious man\, felt inspired by the Torah itself. He was sure that an alliance between blacks and Jews was fundamental to progress in civil rights. SUMMARY:Gene Kelly
DESCRIPTION:It is one of the single most iconic moments in the history of the movies: Gene Kelly dancing with absolute joy in a rainstorm in Singing In The Rain. \nThat unforgettable moment showcases so many things – a brilliant dancer and choreographer at the height of his powers is highlighted on a magnificent set\, singing a glorious song that reflects every reason why we love going to the movies in the first place. \nLike King Kong atop the Empire State Building\, Dorothy clicking her heels\, Indiana Jones running from the boulder or Cary Grant chased by an airplane\, that moment is forever etched in the minds of movie lovers. \nIn this fast moving and fun multimedia biography we will look at the life\, career\, personality and art of the great Gene Kelly. We will trace his Pittsburgh roots and follow him as a cocky kid determined to conquer dance\, Broadway and Hollywood. He redefined dance on the silver screen. Gene Kelly ditched Fred Astaire’s top hot and tails\, replacing them with a sweatshirt and loafers. His masculine dancing\, emphasis on ballet\, inventive use if props and partners all combined to make his films immediately unique and completely unforgettable. We will see clips of him dancing with partners as different as Rita Hayworth\, Fred Astaire\, Judy Garland and Jerry The Mouse! \nCome prepared to smile – and tap your toes!

SUMMARY:The King And I - Story Of The Real Anna
DESCRIPTION:“The King and I ” is one of the most beloved musicals. The gorgeous music\, lavish sets\, phenomenal costumes\, and fascinating storyline combine to make The King and I a musical that has had decades of popularity on Broadway and as a significant movie musical. The most recent Broadway revival\, stage to perfection by Lincoln Center and pictured above\, was a critical and popular smash. It won the Tony Award for Best Revival Of A Musical. This is the revival that is coming to the Broadway in Chicago series. \nIn this unique\, brand-new multimedia presentation\, we will look at the true story behind “The King and I.”  There actually was a British schoolteacher named Anna Owens who went to Siam (as it was then called) in the mid-1800s to teach the children of the King. As you will see\, the Broadway and Hollywood musical versions take great liberties with the actual story. While we love the music\, costumes\, songs\, and sets\, “The King and I” is banned and despised throughout Thailand today! We will look into all that and much more\, including clips from all the movie versions of the story. This is a presentation you will not want to miss! \nWe will trace the Broadway productions featuring the glorious revival which appeared at Broadway in Chicago. \nBonus!!!! Click here to read about real-life Anna!

SUMMARY:First Ladies From ELeanor Roosevelt To Dr. Jill Biden
DESCRIPTION:First Ladies of the 20th and 21st Centuries\nWhen Martha Washington became our first First Lady\, she stepped into a roll with no job description and no precedent. She handled the position with grace and polish. however\, each of the extraordinary women who served as First Lady brought something unique and different to the role. \nFirst Ladies of the 20th and 21st Centuries\n \nThis installment in our series on the history of the First Ladies looks at the changing roles taken on by the wives of the presidents from 1932 – 2012. We begin with Eleanor Roosevelt and conclude with Michelle Obama. This is certainly a distinctive mix of personalities and aspirations! We will look at the “traditional” First Ladies who took on the role of wife and mother and shunned the spotlight. This group includes Bess Truman\,  Mamie Eisenhower\, and Barbara Bush. Jacqueline Kennedy carved out a very different niche for herself\, raising a young family while bringing glamour back to the White House. Several of the  First Ladies in this group were transformative figures. Lady Bird Johnson\, Nancy Reagan and Rosalyn Carter were tremendously influential in their husband’s administrations. Betty Ford brought a new candor to the position. And our most recent First Ladies – Hillary Clinton\, Laura Bush\, and Michelle Obama raised the bar in terms of education and professional accomplishment before serving as First Lady. \nUsing numerous film clips\, intriguing insights\,  thought provoking comparisons\, and fascinating anecdotes\, I will open your eyes to the very different personalities and accomplishments of the First Ladies of the 20th and 21st centuries. \n  \nREGISTRATION – this event is live and in person. It is hosted by the Moorings Of Arlington Heights\, a beautiful retirement community. You are invited to attend for free\, but you must register in advance by contacting their Director of Community Events.

SUMMARY:Harry Belafonte (AM)
DESCRIPTION:This has become one of my favorite new programs. And it is undoubtedly one of the most surprising programs I have ever researched! \nWhen I began my research\, I thought I would talk about a popular entertainer from the 1950s who introduced calypso music to America. \nAs I dug deeper\, I quickly realized that Harry Belafonte was one of the civil rights movement’s most important and influential leaders. In early  1968\, Johnny Carson turned over the Tonight Show to Harry Belafonte for an entire week! The “sit-in\,” as it was called\, featured Belafonte interviewing guests\, including Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King! \nYou’ll find out that Harry Belafonte was one of Martin Luther King’s closest friends and most trusted advisers\, deeply involved in the civil rights movement at every turn. \nSo whether you prefer my “straight history” presentations or my popular culture presentations\, this one is for you! \nThis makes for a unique multimedia presentation. \nWe will watch fabulous clips of Harry Belafonte performing spectacular calypso numbers –  and we will also hear him criticize Barack Obama for not doing enough to help African-Americans! \nI urge you to sign up for this program. There is no other entertainer or activist who combines the unique characteristics\, charismatic personality\, and thoughtful philosophy of Harry Belafonte! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free; I am struggling but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. SUMMARY:Sid Caesar - The Meteoric Career Of A Comic Genius
DESCRIPTION:In the opinion of many TV critics\, the Sid Caesar programs were the funniest \, best-written and most creative shows in the history of television comedy. Caesar’s writing crew (including Carl Reiner\, Woody Allen\, Mel Brooks\, Neil Simon\, and Selma Diamond( is widely regarded as the most talented staff in the history of television. \nThe sheer talent of Sid Caesar is overwhelming – as  Carl Reiner\, his writer\, and co-star\, put it: \n“Sid Caesar set the template for everybody\,” Reiner told KNX-AM in Los Angeles. “He was without a doubt the greatest sketch comedian-monologist that television ever produced. He could ad-lib. He could do anything that was necessary to make an audience laugh.” \n \nFor all his accolades\, however\, Sid Caesar was a deeply troubled man who saw a brilliant career waste away in the wake of his addictions. After his TV programs ended\, his fame evaporated as his demons challenged him\,  It took intensive self-therapy and personal courage for him to turn his life around. And did he ever!  By the time of his death\, he was once again rewarded with the respect and reverence his comic genius deserved. \nThis unique multimedia presentation will explore all sides of Sid Caesar. You will laugh uproariously at the rare video clips and find yourself mesmerized by the intense struggle of the king of Comedy. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:M*A*S*H
DESCRIPTION:M*A*S*H is one of the most important\, influential\, and intriguing television series of all time. \nM*A*S*H was set during the Korean War.\, However\, the creators of M*A*S*H intended to make a statement about the ongoing war in Vietnam and war in general. When it finally left the air after 11\, M*A*S*H had won a slew of Emmys\, numerous other awards and was recognized already as one of the classic television series ever broadcast. \nThis is not a nostalgia program.
