SUMMARY:Cole Porter - Risque Master Of American Music
DESCRIPTION:Cole Porter is one of the greatest songwriters in American history. His melodies were sublime. His lyrics were creative\, witty\, sophisticated\, original\, and naughty. Cole Porter was the ultimate European-oriented sophisticate – yet he was born in tiny Peru\, Indiana! \nPorter’s list of songs includes some of the most incredible entries in the great American Songbook!  Consider: \nLET’S DO IT (LET’S FALL IN LOVE) (1928) \n NIGHT AND DAY (1932) \nANYTHING GOES (1934) \n DON’T FENCE ME IN (1934) \nI GET A KICK OUT OF YOU (1934) \nBEGIN THE BEGUINE (1935) \n I’VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN (1936) \nIT’S DE-LOVELY (1936) \nPorter’s legacy was further assured by brilliant Broadway shows like “Kiss Me Kate” and “Can-Can.” But beneath the surface of this bon-vivant lay a tortured soul. Cole Porter lived in both psychic and physical pain for much of his life. His life story\, personality\, and music combine for a memorable multimedia presentation! \n

SUMMARY:Bill Murray
DESCRIPTION:Bill Murray has had one of the most unique and unpredictable careers of anyone in show business! \nStarting off as a snarky deadpan comic\, one of the first breakout stars on Saturday Night Live\, he made a series of wildly successful and hugely popular comedies\, including “Stripes\,” “Caddyshack\,” Ghostbusters\,” and “Tootsie.” \nIf we stopped the clock on Murray’s career there\, he’d be remembered as a great comic movie star with broad appeal. The film career of his SNL castmate Chevy Chase might be a good eqiovalent. \nBut unlike Chase\, whose film career stalled out\, Bill Murray made a breathtaking pivot into more serious\, adult\, and important movie roles. \nIn films like “Grounhog Day\,” “The Razor’s Edge\,” “Moonrise Kingdom\,” “Monuments Men\,” and his Oscar nominated performance in “Lost In Translation\, Bill Murray has established himself as a versatil and talented dramatic actor. \nThis intriguing multimedia presentation will delve into Murray’s quirky and iconoclastic personality. He’s a Chicago Cubs superfan and the co-owner of several minor league baseball teams. However\, Bill Murray has been accused of inappropriate behavior\, engaged in many feuds\, and Dan Ayckroyd dubbed him “Murraycane” for his wild mood swigs. \nThis presentation will be in hybrid format – you can attend in person or watch on Zoom. Contact the host for registration information. \n

SUMMARY:Bill Murray
DESCRIPTION:Bill Murray has had one of the most unique careers in entertainment history. Starting with Second City & National Lampoon\, Bill Murray became a tremendous sensation when he joined the early cast of Saturday Night Live. His deadpan\, snarky\, insincere comedy persona made him a standout\, even in the days of Jim Belushi\, Chevy Chase\, and Dan Aykroyd. \nAfter staying with SNL for only three seasons\, he made an immediate smash on the big screen. Bill Murray appeared in one of the highest-grossing comedy movies of all time\, Ghostbusters\, and such comic classics as Stripes and Caddyshack. \nBut over time\, this comic icon shifted his interest shift as he began to do more dramatic films and perform more supporting parts that allowed him to create unforgettable secondary characters. Performing for great directors such as George Clooney\, Sophia Coppola\, and Wes Anderson\, Murray carved out her unique niche in which he is often considered one of the country’s most versatile supporting actors. \nWe will examine his remarkable career\, but we will also talk about Bill Murray’s strange\, idiosyncratic personality and the frequently reported instances of inappropriate behavior\, which have clouded his reputation and stalled his career as he reached his 70s. \nThis multimedia presentation has a little bit of everything. Lots of laughs\, glimpses of outstanding dramatic acting\, and many head-scratching or offputting moments where we wonder why the world’s most famous Chicago Cubs super fan has chosen to engage in feuds with his costars. \n

SUMMARY:1948: America 75 Years Ago (AM)
DESCRIPTION:I’m back with the latest installment of my popular “Time Capsule” series! Each session will explore the year’s top news stories\, top movies and shows\, famous birds and deaths\, what things cost\, and so much more! \nIn this session\, we will dive into America as it was 75 years ago\, \nIn the tumultuous year of 1948. The baby boom was in full swing; we read the famous “Dewey defeats Truman” headline\, and “Uncle Milty” – the one and only Milton Berle – made Americans run out and buy their first television! 1948 brought one of the most exciting upset elections of all time; Israel was born\, as was Billy Crystal\, Gandhi was assassinated\, and the first instant cameras were used. \n\

DESCRIPTION:The fabulous Betty White has been called an American national treasure – and rightly so! Up until her death at 99\, Betty White was a beacon of positivity even in difficult years! Witty\, working\, and happy\, Betty White it’s a beacon of positivity even in difficult times! \nDid you know that at a key moment in her career\, she risked her job to stand up for Civil Rights? \nBetty White was voted one of America’s most beloved entertainers year in and year out.  In 2018\, she was chosen as the most trusted person in America! You know her as the seemingly sweet we but secretly scheming sexpot Sue Anne Nivens on the iconic  “Mary Tyler Moore Show\,” the endearing\, naïve\, and trusting Rose Nyland on the classic  “Golden Girls\,” and the outrageous and somewhat loopy Elka Ostrovsky on ” Hot in Cleveland.” \n Betty White has been a staple on talk shows\, a host and panelist on game shows\, and has even performed in some popular movies\, including one classic film drama about politics in which she played a U.S. Senator! \nYou may not know that Betty White was a pioneer in the early days of television\, being the first woman to produce her own show!  The amazing Ms. White is a best-selling author and tireless advocate for animals. IMost importantly\, she is widely considered one of the nicest people in all show business. This warm\, charming and funny presentation is loaded with hilarious video clips and great stories about the one and only Betty White. \n

SUMMARY:America's Purpose Statement: The Declaration Of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The most important sentence ever written by an American – a sentence that has inspired people in every part of the world – is found in America’s purpose statement! Click here to read more. The legacy of Washington\, Hancock\, Franklin\, Jefferson\, Adams\, Hamilton\, and Paul Revere still challenges us. \n \nOn a stifling July Thursday in 1776\, our Founding Fathers agreed to a completely unique document in the world’s history. There had been many revolutions over the centuries\, but never had one begun with a philosophical purpose statement. \nAlthough the Declaration of Independence has no legal power\, the Declaration has become the guiding beacon for what America strives to become. As the events of 2020 showed\, we as a nation are a world leader in human rights\, yet\, America is still a work in progress. \n \nWhy study the Declaration of Independence? Because it is the ultimate statement of what we hope to become. It has been quoted by freedom movements in the USA and worldwide. \nYet many Americans know surprisingly little about it. In this exciting and thought-provoking multimedia presentation\, I will present the thrilling themes\, difficult negotiations\, contradictory\, complex\, charismatic personalities\, and exciting events leading to the most critical moment in American history. \n

SUMMARY:Bill Murray (Monday PM)
DESCRIPTION:Bill Murray has had one of the most unique careers in entertainment history. Starting off with Second City & National Lampoon\, Bill Murray became a tremendous sensation when he joined the early cast of Saturday Night Live. His deadpan\, snarky\, insincere comedy persona made him a standout\, even in the days of Jim Belushi\, Chevy Chase\, and Dan Aykroyd. \nAfter staying with SNL for only three seasons\, he made an immediate smash on the big screen. Bill Murray appeared in one of the highest-grossing comedy movies of all time\, Ghostbusters\, as well as such comic classics as Stripes and Caddyshack. \nBut over time\, this comic icon shifted his interest shift as he began to do more dramatic films and perform more supporting parts that allowed him to create unforgettable secondary characters. Performing for great directors such as George Clooney\, Sophia Coppola\, and Wes Anderson\, Murray carved out her unique niche in which he is often considered to be one of the country’s most versatile supporting actors. Lots of laughs\, glimpses of wonderful dramatic acting\, and many head-scratching or offputting moments where we wonder why the world’s most famous Chicago Cubs super fan has chosen to engage in feuds with his costars. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:TV By The Decades: Television in the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:TV in the 1960s\nThe 1960s were definitely one of TV’s oddest decades! The 1960s began with Westerns dominating the ratings! The old West soap opera Bonanza became the most popular show on the air. One after another competing show was vanquished by the old-time sensibilities of an old-fashioned Western. \nAll you really need to know about the diverse nature of TV in the 1960s is found in the answer to the question: “What show finally was able to compete with Bonanza in the ratings?” The answer was a liberal\, modern\, and very controversial challenger: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. This bastion of the hip\, cutting edge liberal comedy gave young viewers quite a stark alternative to the Ponderosa! (Trivia! Bonanza\, like Dragnet\, had their stars wear the exact same clothes every week. It saved money on costumes and allowed the producers to reuse old shots from previous episodes! \nSo the 1960s were the era of Gunsmoke and Wagon Train\, Gilligan’s Island and The Beverly Hillbillies and Laugh-In and The Smothers Brothers! We will talk about how TV grew and changed as viewers who had enjoyed Combat began tuning in to Hogan’s Heroes. You won’t want to miss this fast-paced multimedia presentation! \nIN THE COMMENTS BELOW – LIST YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW OF THE 1960s! \n
