SUMMARY:Will Rogers: America’s Cowboy Philosopher
DESCRIPTION:Will Rogers: America’s Cowboy Philosopher \nWill Rogers is one of the most popular Americans to have ever lived!  he famously said\, “I never met a man I didn’t like.” And the reverse was true – no one ever seemed to dislike Will Rogers. He was America’s favorite political comic and commentator\,  a major movie star\, an impressively prolific and widely read author\,  a world traveler and clearly the USA’s  most beloved homespun philosopher for the 20 years between 1915 and his untimely death in 1935. \nHe was a modestly educated part Native American cowboy from Oklahoma who wound up charming the world and is still widely quoted today. Will Rogers’ vivid\, folksy\, popular appeal comes brilliantly the life in this multimedia presentation. You’ll be amazed at how contemporary his political commentary still sounds!

SUMMARY:Sherman's March To The Sea - Saving America By Destroying A Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:Sherman’s March To The Sea – Saving America By Destroying A Rebellion\n No military action in the bloody Civil War was probably more controversial than Sherman’s March To The Sea. After the War\, traitors who were inclined to respect Grant and revere Lincoln were unreconstructed in their hatred of William T. Sherman. Why? The brutal\, unprecedented destruction of enormous swaths of the South hastened the end of the War and sped the end of the barbarous\,immoral and inhumane practice of the enslavement\, rape and murder of the descendants of kidnap victims. Sherman hastened the demise of that unspeakable activity. However the utter desolation of the lives and lands of so many White Southerners had a long-lasting impact on race relations and politics. \nSherman was a complex man\, brilliant and fragile\, harsh and yet sentimental. His troops adored him\, leaders of the terrorist rebellion feared him and Abraham Lincoln recognized his invaluable patriotic service to our nation. \nIn this fast paced and constantly fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will learn how Gen. William Sherman and his dedicated troops easily crushed the army of traitors who stood in their way – in the process making military history and helping save the republic. Add to that his friendship with General Grant\, his deep respect for President Lincoln\, his amazing life after the war – they all make for a compelling and fascinating multimedia history presentation!

SUMMARY:Who Killed JFK – Historian Presents a Modern Analysis
DESCRIPTION: Who Killed JFK?\n I’ll Tell You! \n \nThe murder of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked the nation. A suspect was quickly arrested and subsequently murdered. President Lyndon Johnson appointed a blue ribbon committee – the Warren Commission – to answer the question: who killed JFK? \nThey concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. Immediately\, the public was skeptical. Stephen King described Oswald as “a semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur.” How could such an insignificant loser pull off such a dastardly crime? And why did Jack Ruby\, accused of being a Mob member\, kill Oswald? \nWe have been through with whispered knowledge of conspiracies\, confessions\, and coverups. And so the public has asked for an explanation of the “magic bullet.” \nAnd the contradictory witness statements. \nAnd Oswald’s shadowy past. \nAnd all of the “secret files.” \nAnd all of the conspiracy theories. \nAnd all of the “mysterious deaths” associated with the assassination? \nBooks\, articles\, movies\, and documentaries have raised innumerable questions about who killed JFK. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis\nSo who killed JFK? I will attempt to answer as many of these questions as possible. First\, I will attempt to separate historical fact from theory & speculation. Second\, I will show what the historical record actually indicates happened. We have access to much more information today than the Warren Commission had in 1963/4 or the House of Representatives had in 1977. Third\, we will examine what modern computer forensics can tell us about crime. For instance\, the Warren Commission had access to the “Zapruder Film.”  Today\, we can use computers to enhance and analyze the film. We can use modern technology to analyze the path of each of the bullets that were fired. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis \nAnd we can use computers to isolate the mysterious sounds a Dallas motorcycle patrolman captured.  In 1977\, the House of Representatives believed that the recording showed four shots fired in Dealy Plaza.  The National Academy of Science\, among many other groups\, have taken the same sound recordings and used state-of-the-art technology to analyze them. What do we know now? \nYou may disagree with my conclusions\, but you will definitely learn a lot and come away with a new perspective on the historical record of who killed JFK. \nTHIS PRESENTATION IS FREE AND IN-PERSON ONLY. YOU MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE!

SUMMARY:America's Purpose Statement: The Declaration Of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The most important sentence ever written by an American – a sentence that has inspired people in every part of the world – is found in America’s purpose statement! Click here to read more. The legacy of Washington\, Hancock\, Franklin\, Jefferson\, Adams\, Hamilton\, and Paul Revere still challenges us. \n \nOn a stifling July Thursday in 1776\, our Founding Fathers agreed to a completely unique document in the world’s history. There had been many revolutions over the centuries\, but never had one begun with a philosophical purpose statement. \nAlthough the Declaration of Independence has no legal power\, the Declaration has become the guiding beacon for what America strives to become. As the events of 2020 showed\, we as a nation are a world leader in human rights\, yet\, America is still a work in progress. \n \nWhy study the Declaration of Independence? Because it is the ultimate statement of what we hope to become. It has been quoted by freedom movements in the USA and worldwide. \nYet many Americans know surprisingly little about it. In this exciting and thought-provoking multimedia presentation\, I will present the thrilling themes\, difficult negotiations\, contradictory\, complex\, charismatic personalities\, and exciting events leading to the most critical moment in American history. \n

SUMMARY:Lincoln's Greatest Speeches
DESCRIPTION:This brand new presentation will introduce you to the greatest speeches given by our greatest president. Abraham Lincoln was a master of communication. Like FDR during World War II\, Lincoln constantly explained to Americans why we were fighting the Civil War. Although many people throughout the Union opposed him\, President Abraham Lincoln never stopped trying to bring about national consensus\, conciliation\, and cooperation. \nYou are probably very familiar with the Gettysburg address. And you may remember that President Lincoln famously called on the nation to deal with defeated traitors\, “With malice towards none and charity towards all..” but in this insightful history presentation\, we will go pull out the surface. We will look at how Lincoln used language to make sure his positions were clearly understood\, that people felt empowered\, and with the hope that he could heal a broken nation. \n

SUMMARY:Al Capone - Master Of The Mob
DESCRIPTION:Organized crime came in with a bang – literally – with the rise of prohibition. And no city was more under the control of the mob than Chicago. This exciting look at the rise of the Chicago outfit in the early days\, culminating with Al Capone\, finishes with a fascinating look at how Sam Giancana changed the Syndicate in Chicago from a group of bootlegging dogs to an international powerhouse that influenced American presidential elections and American foreign policy. \nWe’ll examine how ethnic neighborhoods\, Chicago city politics\, and the Kennedy administration all played into the tremendous influence of organized crime in Chicago. \nAl Capone was one of the most famous gangsters in American History.  Unlike many organized crime leaders\, he did little to hide his identity. He was seen at Wrigley Field chatting with star catcher Gabby Hartnett. \nGabby Hartnett Chats With Al Capone \n  \nThe true story of Al Capone’s rise and fall is complex and unexpected. Capone began as a cheap hoodlum in Brooklyn\, working for Frankie Yale\, the first man to begin organizing the mob in New York. \nLater\, Capone moved to Chicago to assist his pal Frankie Torrio\, second in command of the Chicago mob.  With ferocity and force\, Capone would come to head the Chicago outfit – before a mild-mannered bookkeeper and the federal income tax laws brought him down! \n  \n\

SUMMARY:LBJ and Civil Rights (PM)
DESCRIPTION:Lyndon Johnson is one of the most complex men I’ve had to be president. He was capable of great cruelty and insensitivity. However\, as President  LBJ became a tireless champion of the poor\, the marginalized\, and the oppressed within the USA. This multimedia program covers the fascinating evolution of Lyndon Johnson’s thinking about the government’s role in guaranteeing freedom of equality for African-Americans. LBJ and civil rights may seem like an unlikely tandem. But ultimately\, other than Abraham Lincoln\, no president did more to advance the cause of African-Americans than Lyndon Baines Johnson! \nLBJ and Civil Rights\nWe will begin with a quick overview of Johnson’s personal sympathies regarding helping the poor and contrast it with his votes in the House of Representatives against civil rights legislation. Beginning in 1957\, LBJ\, as majority leader\, became a tentative ally of the civil rights movement. As president\, LBJ used all of his political skill and muscle to get Congress to pass two landmark bills that reshaped justice and upended the electoral map in ways that are still important. \nThe Civil Rights Act of 1964 finally ended legal segregation in America. The Voting Rights Act (1965) established the government as a powerful ally in guaranteeing African-Americans in the South would have the right to vote. Few presidents have ever passed two more significant\, breathtaking pieces of legislation. They reshaped American expectations about race. \nThe Election of 1964\, on the surface\, does not seem particularly interesting. Lyndon Johnson crushed Republican Barry Goldwater in a massive\, historic landslide. However\, that election began a process of changing the political parties that impact us today! \nI hope you will join us for this thought-provoking history program! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Carl Reiner
DESCRIPTION:Carl Reiner was one of the funniest men ever to appear\, write for\, or direct a TV episode! \nAt 97\, he was the oldest celebrity active on Twitter – and never contemplating retiring from show business! Join me for a fast\, funny\, and fascinating look at one of America’s classic comic treasures\, Mr. Carl Reiner \nCarl Reiner first exploded into the American consciousness as the straight man on the immortal Sid Caesar’s great TV shows. \nWorking alongside writing legends including Mel Brooks\, Woody Allen\, Neil Simon\, Selma Diamond\, and Larry Gelbart\, Carl Reiner became one of the volatile Caesar’s favorite co-stars and most trusted writers. \nTheir classic “Professor” sketches are still hilarious sixty-five years after they first aired. And his lifelong friendship and collaboration with Mel Brooks began as a result! \nAfter the Sid Caesar shows ended\, Carl Reiner created The DIck Van Dyke Show. This program would prove to be one of the most influential\, funniest\, and most transformative situation comedies of all time. \nAfter Reiner and Van Dyke ended the show at the height of its popularity\, the brilliant writer/producer/director began working on feature films. \nCarl Reiner created the cult classics “Where’s Poppa” and “Oh\, God” before embarking on a brilliant partnership with Steve Martin. The Reiner/Martin films include some of the best comedies of Steve Martin’s career\, including “The Jerk\,” “All Of Me\,” and “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. \nWe’ll enjoy clips and stories from all of this – and\, of course – the brilliant “2\,000 Year Old Man” routines with Mel Brooks. Don’t miss this excellent presentation!

SUMMARY:Unusual Movie Musicals
DESCRIPTION:What is the greatest movie musical of all time? “Singin’ In The Rain\,” “Grease\,” “The Wizard Of Oz\,” “West Side Story\,” and a number of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films would pop up in many lists. However\, this fun multimedia presentation will not cover an of them! Instead\, you’ll be introduced to some wonderful but decidedly unusual movie musicals. \nWe will see the great Harry Belafonte’s only movie musical – in which he sings music from Bizet’s opera Carmen and a stunning recreation of the Las Vegas strip\, built on a movie soundstage. \nFrom a 1980 film in which Olivia Newton-John plays a daughter of Zeus who roller skates down from Mount Olympus to dance with Gene Kelly before inspiring a struggling artist to build a roller disco (seriously!) to a 1968 full-length\, kaleidoscopic animated feature using voice actors to recreate the Beatles saving us from the Blue Meanies\, this entertaining and quirky program is filled with unexpected delights! \n  \n

Each of these unusual films is fabulous in its own way. \nOur cinematic journey will take us from a 1980 film in which Olivia Newton-John plays a daughter of Zeus who roller skates down from Mount Olympus to dance with Gene Kelly before inspiring a struggling artist to build a roller disco (seriously!) to a 1968 full-length\, kaleidoscopic animated feature using voice actors to recreate the Beatles saving us from the Blue Meanies\, this entertaining and quirky program is filled with unexpected delights! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Life And Career Of Robert Redford
DESCRIPTION:Robert Redford is one of the most popular American movie actors of all time. Although he was initially thought of as just a “pretty boy” presence\, like Tyrone Power and Paul Newman before him\, Robert Redford proved to be a superb actor.  The life and career of Robert Redford will fascinate you! \nLike his friend and mentor\, Paul Newman\, Robert Redford took a long time to “find himself.” He spent his youth in trouble with the law and drank his way out of a Division One baseball scholarship. \nLife And Career Of Robert Redford\nAfter living a wandering\,  bohemian life in Europe\, Redford returned to the United States and settled into acting. For over half a century\, he has been featured in some of the most popular and important American films of his era. As a Director\, he has won an Academy Award\, become perhaps the most important champion of independent filmmaking through his creation of the Sundance Film Festival\, been hailed as a leading spokesman for environmental protection\, and developed a reputation for philanthropy. Although he is now retired from acting\, the legacy of Robert Redford will impact American film for decades to come. \n  \nThe Highland Park Senior Center hosts this live\, in-person event.   \nIf you are a member of the Highland Park Senior Center\, the event is free. \nIf you are not a member\, the cost to attend is $10> \nPlease note: registration is required.  \n

SUMMARY:Bill Murray
DESCRIPTION:Bill Murray has had one of the most unique careers in entertainment history. Starting with Second City & National Lampoon\, Bill Murray became a tremendous sensation when he joined the early cast of Saturday Night Live. His deadpan\, snarky\, insincere comedy persona made him a standout\, even in the days of Jim Belushi\, Chevy Chase\, and Dan Aykroyd. \nAfter staying with SNL for only three seasons\, he made an immediate smash on the big screen. Bill Murray appeared in one of the highest-grossing comedy movies of all time\, Ghostbusters\, and such comic classics as Stripes and Caddyshack. \nBut over time\, this comic icon shifted his interest shift as he began to do more dramatic films and perform more supporting parts that allowed him to create unforgettable secondary characters. Performing for great directors such as George Clooney\, Sophia Coppola\, and Wes Anderson\, Murray carved out her unique niche in which he is often considered one of the country’s most versatile supporting actors. \nWe will examine his remarkable career\, but we will also talk about Bill Murray’s strange\, idiosyncratic personality and the frequently reported instances of inappropriate behavior\, which have clouded his reputation and stalled his career as he reached his 70s. \nThis multimedia presentation has a little bit of everything. Lots of laughs\, glimpses of outstanding dramatic acting\, and many head-scratching or offputting moments where we wonder why the world’s most famous Chicago Cubs super fan has chosen to engage in feuds with his costars. \nREGISTRATION \nThis program is FREE and live on Zoom. It begins at 1 pm Central/2 pm Eastern! \nClick here to register! \n

SUMMARY:Unexpected Movie Teams - Delightful Duos Creating Classic Films (PM)
DESCRIPTION:  \nUnexpected Movie Teams\nSome movie teams seem inevitable and natural.  The Ratpack. Fred and Ginger. But some films boast completely unexpected movie teams. For instance\, did you know that Sidney Poitier and Robert Redford co-starred in a terrific movie with Dan Aykroyd? Or that ditzy Gracie Allen co-starred in a musical with suave Fred Astaire? Sometimes\, unexpected movie teams make for a classic movie. That is the topic for this presentation on classic films – is it any wonder why I love public speaking? \nIn this unique presentation\, we will look at instances where movie stars with very different styles are paired together in combinations that are unique. Consider the teaming of Gregory Peck and Danny DeVito in Other People’s Money.  We will see how unexpected movie teams can create classic cinema. Whether it is the always manic Danny Kaye costarring with the always cool Gene Tierney or Bob Hope – who overplays everything – costarring with Roy Rogers – who underplays everything\, these movies can offer special delights! \nPlease join us!  This presentation will be fun! \nThis multimedia presentation offers background\, analysis and clips from the movies.  Although we will look at many examples\, the films at the centerpiece of the discussions include: \nSneakers (Sidney Poitier and Dan Aykroyd) \nMonkey Business (Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe) \nOther People’s Money (Danny DeVito and Gregory Peck) \nSon Of Paleface (Bob Hope and Roy Rogers) \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges
DESCRIPTION:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges\nYou may be asking yourself: “So who is this guy\, and why have I never heard of him?” My response is: “Challenge yourself to become enthralled with the filmmaker whose name you may not know but whose movies are unforgettable!” \nThat is exactly the challenge I gave to screenwriter Jarett Miller. Jarett\, 26\, is a frequent guest when I speak about movies. In addition to being a screenwriter who has worked on major projects like “Wonder Woman\,” “It\,” and “The Umbrella Academy\,” among others\, Jarett has an advanced degree in film and a passion for great storytelling. For this unique two-part series\, I challenged Jarett to watch some of the great Preston Sturges movies. Our course description matches what I told him! I do hope you will sign up! \nIn a span of just seven years\, Preston Sturges had an unparalleled run of making some of the greatest American movies of all time.    \nThe films of Preston Sturges are absolutely unique\, unforgettable\, and utterly brilliant. However\, although his Hollywood career lasted over 35 years\, the movies Preston Sturges wrote and directed between 1938 and 1945 alone were enough to cement his reputation as one of the most influential directors and respected screenwriters of all time.  After becoming the first screenwriter of the talking movie era to direct his own films\,  Preston Sturges created a unique body of work that still delights challenges and amuses audiences 80 years later. Furthermore\, his personal life was as unexpected\, unique\, and memorable as his movies! \nJoin Jarett and me as we explore the movies written and directed by one of the great filmmakers\, Preston Sturges! We will explore his films in chronological order. Join us for both parts of this great two-week program. \n

SUMMARY:M*A*S*H
DESCRIPTION:M*A*S*H is one of the most important\, influential\, and intriguing television series of all time. \nM*A*S*H was set during the Korean War.\, However\, the creators of M*A*S*H intended to make a statement about the ongoing war in Vietnam and war in general. When it finally left the air after 11seasons\, M*A*S*H had won a slew of Emmys and numerous other awards and was recognized already as one of the classic television series ever broadcast. \nThis is not a nostalgia program. Although we will watch some fabulous multimedia clips from the show\, we will focus on how the show was created\, how M*A*S*H evolved\, and how the series influenced television and society. \nREGISTRATION \nPLEASE NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS IN-PERSON AND FREE! \nRegistration opens on Dec. 15. SUMMARY:Looking Back - Looking Ahead - 2023 in Review/Predictions for 2024
DESCRIPTION:This is\, without question\, my most eagerly awaited program of the year returns! Last year\, this program sold out at every venue – so reserve your seats early! \nPerhaps it’s just the era we are in\, but this year seemed to be one of the most extraordinary of our lifetimes. We saw a major and terrifying war involving Israel\, the former president of the United States of America being found responsible for sexual assault and for fraud in separate courts while facing significant criminal charges in several venues\, the House of Representatives in utter chaos\, Chicago sports teams collapsing\, a major crisis of migrants at the southern border and in Chicago\, and a wild presidential election awaiting us. \nIn early December of each year\, I present a look back at the year coming to a close. I will list: \n√ Top Ten News Stories of 2023 \n√ Top Ten Quotes of 2023 \n√ Top Ten New Words of 2023 \n√ Important Deaths of 2023 \nPREDICTIONS!\nAnd then comes the part everyone enjoys – I will make ten specific predictions for 2024! Who will be elected president? Will Donald Trump be sent to prison? Will a solution be found for the migrant crisis or for inflation? What new breakthroughs will science and technology offer us in the coming year? \nAnd just so you can keep me honest\, I will show you precisely what I predicted for 2023. We will assess how correct – or not – I was in my predictions for this year!! \n  \n  \n
