SUMMARY:Best Actors Never to Win an Oscar
DESCRIPTION:America has been in love with the movies for over 100 years.  Every year\, the race for the Oscar is closely watched by movie fans around the world.  Winning the Academy Award connotes something special in the history of film.  Movie buffs debate the winners and losers\, the snubs\, and the surprises.  However\, since the 1920s\, the Academy Awards have built a long historical record that we can examine.  And that record definitely contains some shocking omissions.   In this fun and fast multimedia presentation\, we will look at which highly-regarded actors have never won a competitive Academy Award. \n \nWe will not be considering one specific film performance\, but the larger question is why a great body of work never yielded an Oscar.  For instance\, how did great actors from Hollywood’s golden past\, such as Peter O’Toole\, Cary Grant\, & Richard Burton\, never win an Academy Award?  And how has the precious Oscar statuette eluded actors working today\, such as  Tom Cruise\, Johnny Depp\,\nand Harrison Ford\, who have made some of the most highly acclaimed films ever?  Don’t miss this fun presentation! \n  \nPLEASE NOTE: This program is offered live and in person only at the East-West Center of the Glenview Senior Center.  If you are not a member\, please get in touch with them to register.

SUMMARY:Carl Reiner
DESCRIPTION:Carl Reiner was one of the funniest men ever to appear\, write for\, or direct a TV episode! \nAt 97\, he was the oldest celebrity active on Twitter – and never contemplating retiring from show business! Join me for a fast\, funny\, and fascinating look at one of America’s classic comic treasures\, Mr. Carl Reiner \nCarl Reiner first exploded into the American consciousness as the straight man on the immortal Sid Caesar’s great TV shows. \nWorking alongside writing legends including Mel Brooks\, Woody Allen\, Neil Simon\, Selma Diamond\, and Larry Gelbart\, Carl Reiner became one of the volatile Caesar’s favorite co-stars and most trusted writers. \nTheir classic “Professor” sketches are still hilarious sixty-five years after they first aired. And his lifelong friendship and collaboration with Mel Brooks began as a result! \nAfter the Sid Caesar shows ended\, Carl Reiner created The DIck Van Dyke Show. This program would prove to be one of the most influential\, funniest\, and most transformative situation comedies of all time. \nAfter Reiner and Van Dyke ended the show at the height of its popularity\, the brilliant writer/producer/director began working on feature films. \nCarl Reiner created the cult classics “Where’s Poppa” and “Oh\, God” before embarking on a brilliant partnership with Steve Martin. The Reiner/Martin films include some of the best comedies of Steve Martin’s career\, including “The Jerk\,” “All Of Me\,” and “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. \nWe’ll enjoy clips and stories from all of this – and\, of course – the brilliant “2\,000-Year-Old Man” routines with Mel Brooks. Don’t miss this excellent presentation!

SUMMARY:Best Actresses To Never Win An Oscar!
DESCRIPTION:The Academy Awards are designed to recognize the greatest achievements in movies. Each year\, huge audiences watch the Oscars\, and the results can make or break a film’s chances at success. They also have a huge impact on the careers of the performers. \nBut as you will see in this unique multimedia presentation\, laden with film clips\, Oscar has snubbed some of the greatest and most popular performers in cinema history! \nThis week\, we will be looking at the great ladies of the silver screen who have been denied the top acting awards! Some of the names on the list are sure to surprise you\, including the phenomenal Amy Adams! \nAlthough some of the amazing women we will feature eventually did win honorary Oscars or lifetime achievement awards\, it is nonetheless incomprehensible that some of Hollywood’s most important and accomplished actresses\, including many who appeared in numerous acclaimed films\, never won an acting Oscar. \nOne important example is Chicago’s own Kim Novak. In a ten-year period\, she made six films that are today considered cinema classics. Despite that amazing run\, she was never even nominated for an Oscar! \nOur top twenty list of snubbed actresses will definitely surprise you!  Each choice is accompanied by insightful analysis\, many film clips\, and numerous wonderful anecdotes. \n  \nPLEASE NOTE: This program is offered live and in person only at the Glenview Senior Center. If you are not a member\, please contact them to register.

SUMMARY:The Many Faces of Danny Kaye
DESCRIPTION:The Many Faces of Danny Kaye\nHe was a brilliant comic. He sang well enough to do duets with Bing Crosby\, Louis Armstrong\, and Beverly Sills. Danny Kaye danced beautifully with Vera-Ellen\, often considered the best technical dancer in the movies. His movies gathered legions of fans. His TV show won awards. But the many faces of Danny Kaye are not limited to his unparalleled career in entertainment. Danny Kaye was also a gourmet chef\, a licensed pilot\, a  baseball team owner\, a devoted gardener\, and\, most importantly\, the first celebrity to become an international spokesman for a charity. \n  \nDanny Kaye’s involvement with UNICEF set the model that countless celebrities would follow. He traveled the world\, again and again\, to draw attention to the plight of children living in harsh circumstances. When UNICEF was awarded the Nobel peace prize\, the organization asked Danny Kaye to accept the award. \nIt’s hard to name another entertainer who could do all the things Danny Kaye could do – nor name an entertainer more committed to charity. \nThe many faces of Danny Kaye also involve a darker side. Despite the fact that he seemed affable\, Danny Kaye was a complex man\, not always easy to love or understand. In this fast-paced multimedia presentation\, filled with fabulous film clips\, you will get to know the many faces of Danny Kaye.

SUMMARY:1925: Life in America 100 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Step back to 1925\, the heart of the Roaring Twenties\, when jazz ruled the airwaves\, flappers danced the Charleston\, and speakeasies thrived under Prohibition. This was a year of cultural transformation\, as F. SUMMARY:1950 - Life In America 75 Years Ago (AM)
DESCRIPTION:Journey to 1950\, a defining year of post-war America\, when optimism soared and new challenges emerged. Meanwhile\, the Cold War began to take hold\, with the Korean War marking the first major military conflict of the era. \n1950 wasn’t just about politics and economics—it was a year of rich cultural milestones. The movie Sunset Boulevard captivated audiences with its sharp critique of Hollywood’s Golden Age\, and Ella Fitzgerald’s smooth vocals dominated the airwaves. In sports\, the New York Yankees won another World Series\, while consumer goods like frozen dinners and color televisions symbolized the growing comfort of middle-class American homes. SUMMARY:Movies About Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln On Film
DESCRIPTION:No American President has been portrayed on film more often than Abraham Lincoln! \nFrom the earliest days of silent movies\, Lincoln has been featured in more films than all other Presidents combined. The most brilliant of these iconic performances can be seen in John Ford’s groundbreaking “Young Mr. Lincoln” starring Henry Fonda. Raymond Massey played Lincoln so often on stage\, in movies\, and on TV that George S. Kaufman famously observed: “[Raymond] Massey won’t be satisfied until he’s assassinated!” \nEven in contemporary films such as Spielberg’s “Lincoln\,” the myth of Honest Abe grows and evolves with each movie. In this insightful\, mesmerizing\, and nostalgic multimedia presentation\, you will see my work as a Lincoln scholar combined with my love of classic cinema!
