SUMMARY:Jimmy Carter (AM)
DESCRIPTION:Jimmy Carter was an enigma. \nA profoundly religious Southern Baptist\, raised by a segregationist Father and an open-spirited mother who nursed Black families without pay in southern Georgia\, Carter’s unique background made him hard to define and hard to understand. \nAs President\, Jimmy Carter was a moralist. Neither liberal nor conservative\, he made few political friends and found himself isolated even from those in his own party. \nPresident Carter brimmed with self-confidence and a moral compass that told him what to do and whom to trust. \nThe common perception of Carter is that he was a lousy President (except for the Camp David Accords) and our greatest ex-resident. However\, the impact of the Carter Institute\, his many books\, his work in establishing Habitat For Humanity\, and his world travels as an ambassador of peace have made Carter more popular now than when he was President! \nJoin us for a unique and insightful view into the background and career of Jimmy Carter! \nCOST\nThe program is available for a minimum contribution of $5.00\, which helps support my work and allows me to continue offering engaging content. \nPAYMENT OPTIONS \nCash/Check\nPayable to: Barry Bradford\nMail to:\nBarry Bradford\nP.O. SUMMARY:Jewish Heroes Of The Civil Rights Movement
DESCRIPTION:Some people incorrectly think of the civil rights movement as African-American people versus white people. \nThe truth is that many white people\, including many Jewish Americans\, provided physical\, emotional\, and monetary support to the movement. It would be more accurate to describe the civil rights battles of the 1950s and 60s as a battle between good and evil. \nThis inspiring and fascinating multimedia presentation will examine how Jewish Americans committed themselves to Dr. King’s goals of freedom\, voting rights\, community\, and an end to discrimination. We will examine \n“King repeatedly used the Jewish experience as a model of success over oppression. He respected and admired the values taught by Judaism and\, as a deeply religious man\, felt inspired by the Torah itself. He was sure that an alliance between blacks and Jews was fundamental to progress in civil rights. King felt a sense of kinship with the Jewish people and welcomed — even expected – – Jewish support and felt let down when it was not forthcoming.” Rabbi Marc Schneier \nThis Is A FREE Presentation\, Presented On Zoom. It is at 1 Central –  2 Eastern\nClick Here To Register\n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:1950 - Life In America 75 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Journey to 1950\, a defining year of post-war America\, when optimism soared and new challenges emerged. The Baby Boom was reshaping family life\, and suburban living became the American ideal. Television became the centerpiece of entertainment\, with early shows like I Love Lucy laying the groundwork for modern TV culture. Meanwhile\, the Cold War began to take hold\, with the Korean War marking the first major military conflict of the era. \n1950 wasn’t just about politics and economics—it was a year of rich cultural milestones. The movie Sunset Boulevard captivated audiences with its sharp critique of Hollywood’s Golden Age\, and Ella Fitzgerald’s smooth vocals dominated the airwaves. In sports\, the New York Yankees won another World Series\, while consumer goods like frozen dinners and color televisions symbolized the growing comfort of middle-class American homes. The Tonight Show\, Bill Murray\, and Morgan Fairchild were born in the same year that George Bernard Shaw and George Orwell died. \nThis program offers a vibrant look at a year of optimism and tension\, filled with fascinating stories\, visuals\, and multimedia elements. Whether you remember 1950 or are curious to learn about it\, this engaging presentation will transport you back to a time of hope\, change\, and cultural growth. Reserve your spot now to experience the year that set the stage for modern America! \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Best Actors Never to Win an Oscar
DESCRIPTION:America has been in love with the movies for over 100 years. And every year the race for the Oscar is closely watched by movie fans around the world. Winning the Academy award connotes something special in the history of film. Movie buffs debate the winners and losers\, the snubs\, and the surprises.  But since the 1920s\, the Academy Awards have built a long historical record that we can examine. And that record definitely contains some extremely surprising omissions.   In this fun and fast multimedia presentation\, we will look at which highly-regarded actors have never won a competitive Academy Award \n \nWe will not be considering one specific film performance but the larger question of why a great body of work never yielded an Oscar. For instance\, how did great actors from Hollywood’s golden past\, such as Peter O’Toole\, Cary Grant\, & Richard Burton\, never win an Academy Award? And how has the precious Oscar statuette eluded actors working today\, such as  Tom Cruise\, Johnny Depp\,\nand Harrison Ford\, who have made some of the most highly acclaimed films ever? Don’t miss this fun presentation!

SUMMARY:The Swinging\, Controversial Life Of Frank Sinatra - Part One
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrank Sinatra was one of the most charismatic and controversial American entertainers of all time. \nHe was one of a kind!  \nClick here to read about his impressive record on Civil Rights. \nIn this brand-new multimedia presentation\, I will trace the biography of Sinatra’s improbable life. We will look at his odd childhood as a skinny Italian street kid in working-class Hoboken\, New Jersey. His father was a prizefighter turned saloon keeper; his mother was a hard-drinking suffragette and political power in Hoboken who also made a living by performing abortions. We will look at Sinatra’s bumpy road to stardom. His career had so many ups and downs! Frank Sinatra seemed unstoppable from singing with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey big bands to being the idol of the Bobby Sox brigades in the early 1940s. But when he avoided serving in World War II and musical tastes began to shift\, his career went into a steep decline that was only rescued by the help of the Mafia and his fantastic performance in the movie “From Here To Eternity.” \n \nThe rest of the Frank Sinatra story is equally fascinating. Swingin’ Sinatra\, the Rat Pack\, JFK\, Marilyn Monroe\,  and an abiding dedication to Israel and civil rights are part of the story. So are Lucky Luciano\, Sam Giancana\, Skinny D’Amato\, Jilly Rizzo and the Mafia. (Click here to read about how Peter Lawford connected Sinatra to JFK!)In this one-of-a-kind presentation filled with video clips\, amazing anecdotes\, and insightful analysis\, we will look at all sides of the one and only Chairman of the Board\, Frank Sinatra. \n

SUMMARY:Steve Allen: Renaissance Man of Late-Night Television
DESCRIPTION:Steve Allen: Renaissance Man of Late-Night Television\nThe Tonight Show has been a mainstay of American life for over 50 years. Each of the permanent hosts has stamped American culture in unique\, distinctive\, and memorable ways. Who was the greatest host in the history of the Tonight Show? That is a matter of personal opinion\, of course. However\, in terms of the sheer influence on the direction and the look of late-night television talk shows\, the choice would probably have to be Steve Allen. If you loved when Johnny Carson did his memorable “Carnac the Magnificent” routine\, you might not know that it was a direct copy from the Steve Allen routine called “The Answer Man.” Jay Leno was famous for “Jaywalking.” It was a clever routine – and directly copied from Steve Allen. When Steve Allen appeared on the Tonight Show to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the program\, Jay Leno knelt and kissed his ring! \nSteve Allen: Renaissance Man of Late-Night Television\n As the first host of The Tonight Show\, Steve Allen helped shape our late-night television expectations. But he was far more than just a superb comic broadcaster. This amazing man wrote over 75 books and over 5000 songs\, appeared in major movies\, won awards as a producer\, lectured on philosophy\, history\, and ethics\, and was an accomplished jazz musician. Nobody in the history of show business can approach Steve Allen’s fantastic range of talent and intellect. We will watch rare film clips\, listen to hilarious stories\, and enjoy examples of Steve Allen’s music. I will also add numerous personal anecdotes about my acquaintanceship with Steve Allen. \nThis is one of my favorite presentations! SUMMARY:Nellie Bly
DESCRIPTION:Nellie Bly was one of the most groundbreaking female journalists in American history! \nShe began her journalistic career before she was 20 years old. Working in a time when very few women had ever achieved a great deal of success in journalism\, Nelly Bly broke every mold and every expectation as to what a woman could do in the ‘man’s world’ of newspaper reporting. Smart\, fearless\, and determined\, Nellie Bly fearlessly exposed the harsh\, unfair working conditions for mill workers in Pittsburgh\, drawing the ire of the richest people in the city. She then served as her newspaper  ‘s foreign correspondent in Mexico before being run out of the country for exposing governmental corruption. This dangerous assignment made the petite Ms. Bly the first woman ever to be an accredited foreign correspondent for an American newspaper! \nWanting greater challenges and rejecting the stereotypical notion that female reporters should cover “women’s stories\,” Nelly Bly moved to New York City. In her first assignment\, for Joseph Pulitzer\, she risked her life going undercover in a “mental asylum” in New York. For ten harrowing days\, she was locked in an asylum where Ms. Bly was starved\, tortured\, and unable to secure her own release. Her bombshell reporting caused the New York City asylum to be shut down\, and New York agreed to major reforms in the way they treated people with mental health issues. \nToday\, Nelly Bly is probably best remembered for being the first person ever to travel around the world in less than 80 days. If you are impressed with her accomplishments\, let me add that she did all this before she was 25 years old! \n

SUMMARY:Adlai Stevenson
DESCRIPTION:Adlai Stevenson II was one of the most remarkable political figures of the second half of the 20th century. Although his entire career as an elected public official consisted of one term as the governor of Illinois. He ran unsuccessfully for president twice\, losing by a landslide each attempt. Yet\, so deep was his popularity and widespread his influence that the Democrats considered nominating him a third time for the presidency. It is exceedingly rare for a man trounced in a presidential election to get a second shot at the office. It is even rare for someone to have lost twice and still be considered one of the greatest stars in the history of his political party. Such is the influence of Adlai Stevenson. \nThis fascinating multimedia presentation will look at Stevenson’s roots in downstate Illinois as the son and grandson of important citizens of the state. Click here to read about one of the most unique stories in his young life – the time that Adlai Stevenson actually took the life of a young girl with a rifle. \nWe will follow Adlai Stenson’s government service through World War II and look at the personal qualities that led the Democrats to make him their standard bearer twice. We will conclude with a look at his inspiring and effective leadership as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations during the Cuban Missile Crisis. \nAdlai Stenson’s life story is inspiring and motivating while still challenging and complex. His wit\, wisdom\, and worldview make for an intriguing presentation.

SUMMARY:Jay Leno: Following Carson\, Building A Brand (AM)
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED\n\nJay Leno: Following Carson\, Building A Brand.\nThis presentation on The Tonight Show is an insider’s look at the unpredictable career of the fourth host of the Tonight Show. Following Stave Allen\, Jack Paar and Johnny Carson was a brash and wildly ambitious comic named Jay Leno. Johnny Carson’s last week on the Tonight Show was very emotional.   The country had loved Carson and Tonight.    \nWhen Jay Leno left the stage in 2014\, the reaction was different. Though his ratings were solid\, the country did not love Jay Leno.    In this installment of our popular series on the history of the Tonight Show\, we will explore what forces shaped Leno. \nWe will examine his rise through show business and the controversial ways he twice became the host of the Tonight Show. Jay Leno carefully cultivated a controlled image as the “Nicest Guy In Hollywood.” The closer you look behind the curtain\, the more you realize Jay Leno is not quite as nice as he seems.   The battle for control of the Tonight Show brought out the worst in Leno and left many broken relationships in its wake. SUMMARY:Jay Leno: Following Carson\, Building A Brand (PM)
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE – EVENT IS CANCELLED\nJay Leno: Following Carson\, Building A Brand.\nThis presentation on The Tonight Show is an insider’s look at the unpredictable career of the fourth host of the Tonight Show. W’ll learn the behind the scenes story of Jay Leno\, enjoy many film clips\, and gain a greater perspective on Leno’s role in American culture. SUMMARY:Dorothy Kilgallen
DESCRIPTION:Dorothy Kilgallen is best remembered today as a somewhat flinty regular panelist on the game show “I’ve Got a Secret.” \nHowever\,  this groundbreaking woman was a pioneer in journalism. Her role in attacking the conclusions of the Warren Commission became enormously important and highly controversial as Americans began to question the conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin of Pres. Kennedy! \nDorothy Kilgallen was the first woman in America ever to be a full-time murder reporter. She broke numerous major scoops and often made national headlines with her fearless coverage of criminal trials. \nWhen Dorothy Kilgallen learned that a male newspaper reporter would try to break the record for the fastest trip around the world\, Dorothy Kilgallen decided to challenge him to a race. The world became fixated on the “modern-day Nellie Bly.” Her exploits made Kilgallen famous and were even fictionalized in a major Hollywood movie! \nThis fame led her to New York and a position as both a serious reporter and a catty gossip columnist covering Broadway. Her unique career led her into a major feud with Frank Sinatra\, put her in a position to break open the Notorious and controversial Sam Shepard murder case\, and to leak the story of Marilyn Monroe’s affair with Pres. John F. Kennedy. \nLong before America met her as a game show panelist\, Dorothy Kilgallen became the first mainstream newspaper Porter in the country to question the Warren Commission. She endlessly attacked them\, always hinting that she knew more than she was saying at the moment. When she died under very mysterious circumstances\, many people concluded that she was murdered to shut her up about what she knew about the assassination of JFK. \nI promise you will find surprises around every corner as Dorothy Kilgallen’s life is revealed. Throughout this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will learn the unexpected\, unparalleled\, and definitely unique story of the life and death of the fantastic Dorothy Kilgallen. \n

SUMMARY:James Madison And James Monroe: Influential Founding Fathers
DESCRIPTION:Their names are similar; their life spans are almost identical and each was considered one of the most influential of the founding fathers. Yet despite their very different personalities\, philosophies\, and  achievements\, most Americans today would have a hard time distinguishing one from another. This despite the fact that one of them is the primary author of the Constitution (James Madison) and the other is one of the greatest heroes of the Battle of Trenton. (James Monroe)  each served as president of the United States and their presidencies were very different as well. \nWe will look at the far ranging influence of these two great men.  As their lives intersected with people like George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, Benjamin Franklin\, and John Adams\, each was to become  revered for their patriotism\, courage\, wisdom\, and enormous contributions to the growth of the new nation. \nPLEASE NOTE: This presentation is offered through the Deerfield Men’s Club and registration is required\,
