SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION: \nWho were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody really knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse. However\, the role of First Lady was not given so much as a moment’s thought by the Founding Fathers. In fact\, the title “First Lady” itself was not even widely used until the 1850s! Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent an amazing array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nIn this original series I will present a list of my top ten favorite First Ladies.  I promise that at least a couple of my choices will be women you would have never considered! \nOf course you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt. But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better every day in real ways by the legacy of First Lady Harriet Lane? Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy we had a younger First Ladywho became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children? (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation! It is not merely a collection of trivia.  Rather we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of marvelous Martha Washington\, a slave owner\, to modern Michelle Obama\, the descendent of slaves! \n  \n

SUMMARY:1920 - History In Perspective
DESCRIPTION:1920 was a fascinating year that ushered in an amazing decade!  \nAlthough Americans tend to think of “The Roaring 20s” as the era of flappers\, bathtub gin\, Al Capone\, a booming stock market\, and a much more liberal sexual atmosphere\, the decade was far more complex. The atmosphere of social liberalism was being counterbalanced by the non-stop election of conservative Republicans\, a major pushback from organized religion\, and signs of a deteriorating economy despite seeming prosperity.  \n1920 saw two seemingly opposite trends converge – Americans elected very conservative\, old-fashioned politicians at the same time they were beginning to flout conventional norms of behavior. As an example: we outlawed the sale of alcohol and almost  immediately there grew a culture of drinking\, new criminal organizations to sell booze and the glorification of those who opposed the very government they had just elected! \nWe will focus in on the specific year of 1920 – taking a deep dive into the culture\, sports\, movies\, economy and major news stories of a most fascinating\, transitional year!

SUMMARY:1945
DESCRIPTION:Join me in our time capsule for this amazing look back at one of the most important years in the history of the world: 1945. \nIn 1945 World War II finally came to an end. After the deaths of both Adolph Hitler and Franklin D. Roosevelt\, the evil Nazi empire finally surrendered. In the Pacific Theatre\, fierce battles came to an end with the dropping of the world’s first atomic bombs. The destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war – but ushered in a vastly more dangerous era. \nWe will look at the most popular movies\, radio shows and songs of 1945\, discover what famous were born and which died during the year\, learn about what everyday consumer items cost and look back at the amazing\, ultimately heartbreaking World Series run of the Chicago Cubs! \nAmerica 75 years ago was very different – and tremendously important to how we live today.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Who Killed JFK – Historian Presents a Modern Analysis
DESCRIPTION: Who Killed JFK?\n I’ll Tell You! \n \nThe murder of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked the nation. A suspect was quickly arrested and subsequently murdered. President Lyndon Johnson appointed a blue ribbon committee – the Warren Commission – to answer the question: who killed JFK? \nTheir conclusion was that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. Immediately\, the public was skeptical. Stephen King described Oswald as “a semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur.” How could such an insignificant loser pull off such a dastardly crime? And why did Jack Ruby\, accused of being a Mob member\, kill Oswald? \nWe have been through with whispered knowledge of conspiracies and confessions and coverups. And so the public has asked for an explanation of the “magic bullet.” \nAnd the contradictory witness statements. \nAnd Oswald’s shadowy past. \nAnd all of the “secret files.” \nAnd all of the conspiracy theories. \nAnd all of the “mysterious deaths” associated with the assassination? \nBooks and articles\, movies and documentaries have raised in innumerable questions about who killed JFK. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis\nSo who killed JFK? I will attempt to answer as many of these questions as possible. First I will attempt to separate historical fact from theory & speculation. Second\, I will show what the historical record actually indicates happened. We have access to much more information today then the Warren Commission had in 1963/4 or the House of Representatives had in 1977. Third\, we will examine what modern computer forensics can tell us about the crime. For instance\, the Warren Commission had access to the “Zapruder Film.”  Today\, we can use computers to enhance and analyze the film. We can use modern technology to analyze the path of each of the bullets that were fired. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis \nAnd we can use computers to isolate the mysterious sounds captured by a Dallas motorcycle patrolman.  In 1977\, the House of Representatives believed that the recording showed four shots fired in Dealy Plaza.  The National Academy of Science\, among many other groups\, have taken the same sound recordings and used state-of-the-art technology to analyze them. What do we know now? \nYou may not agree with my conclusions\, but you will definitely learn a lot and come away with a new perspective about the historical record of who killed JFK. \nBONUS! Click Here to read the amazing story of how one of President Kennedy’s most trusted Secret Service agents saved the life of Harry Truman – TWICE!

SUMMARY:The Many Faces of Danny Kaye
DESCRIPTION:The Many Faces of Danny Kaye\nDanny Kaye was a brilliant comic. He sang well enough to do duets with Bing Crosby\, Louis Armstrong\, and even Beverly Sills. He danced beautifully with Vera-Ellen\, a woman often considered the best technical dancer in the movies. His movies gathered legions of fans. His TV show won awards. When it came to show business\, it seemed there was nothing Danny Kaye could not do! \nBut the many faces of Danny Kaye are not limited to his unparalleled career in entertainment. Danny Kaye was also a gourmet chef\, a licensed pilot\, baseball team owner\, a devoted gardener and\, most importantly\, the first celebrity to become an international spokesman for a charity. \nDanny Kaye’s decades-long and deeply passionate involvement with UNICEF set the model followed by countless celebrities who would follow. Although today it is not uncommon to see celebrities who are attached to a cause\, it was Danny Kaye who set the example! not Kaye traveled the world\, over and over\, again and again\, in order to draw attention to the plight of children living in harsh circumstances. When UNICEF was awarded the Nobel peace prize\, the organization asked Danny Kaye to accept the award. \nIt’s hard to name another entertainer who could do all the things Danny Kaye could do – nor name an entertainer more committed to charity. The many faces of Danny Kaye Also involve a darker side. He was a complex man\, not always easy to love nor understand. In this fast-paced multimedia presentation\, filled with fabulous film clips\, you will get to know the many faces of Danny Kaye.

SUMMARY:The History Of Political Satire
DESCRIPTION:The History of Political Satire – From Mark Twin To Stephen Colbert \n“Politicians and diapers should both be changed regularly\, and for the same reason” or so said America’s first great political satirist\, Mark Twain.  Although the history of political satire in America begins with Twain\, we will trace it’s rambunctious history in the great multimedia presentation \nBeginning with Mark Twain\, this funny and thought provoking multimedia presentation will trace the rise of political satire by looking at some of its greatest practitioners\, including Will Rogers\, Mort Sahl\, Dennis Miller\, and Stephen Colbert. \nAlthough Mark Twain and Will  Rogers began the art form of political satire as public entertainment\, the history of political satire shows that it has moved from a novelty to a staple of show business.  \nWith the rise of television in the 1950s\, political satire became a vastly amusing and important part of the discussion about government and elections. Mort Sahl’s controversial monologues eventually led to the Smothers Brothers\, Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show. With the proliferation of cable TV and late night talk/comedy shows\, you can barely escape political comedy if you tried!  \nJoin us for lots of insights\, some amazing history and many hilarious film clips as we trace the history of political satire in the USA!

SUMMARY:Sidney Poitier
DESCRIPTION:Sidney Poitier is\, without question\, one of the greatest actors in the history of American film. \nAdditionally\, Sidney Poitier is the man who broke the color barrier in Hollywood. Like Barack Obama or Jackie Robinson\, he was more than just a symbol. He was a man of great talent\, skill and accomplishment. His success was not only his\, but a reminder of how America had squelched the talents of so many talented citizens.  \nMany fans of the “Golden Era” of “classic films” – including myself – have had to come to grips with the racist\, segregationist nature of those movies. Judy Garland\, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant were great actors and their films remain wildly enjoyable. But look at the films as a whole and you will see the leading roles are all played by white actors. Black actors appear as slaves\, domestics\, field hands\, or drivers. As great as Garland\, Astaire and Grant were\, it’s important to remember they were given opportunities denied to Lena Horne\, the Nicholas Brothers or any black man before Sidney Poitier. The racism of classic Hollywood denied us from appreciating some great talent. Just as the quality of baseball became better when it integrated\, so did movies improve after Sidney Poitier helped open the door. A society is stronger when all its citizens can participate. \nHowever\, his career should not be seen only as historic and groundbreaking. He was a great actor! Sidney Poitier\, in his best roles\, was simply magnificent. \nWatch “The Defiant Ones\,” “Blackboard Jungle\,” “Lillies Of The Field\,” “In The Heat Of The Night\,” “To Sir\, With Love\,” and “A Patch Of Blue” and you see a great actor at the top of his game. You can even see him in a movie with Dan Aykroyd! Poitier could be as suave as Cary Grant\, as intense as Humphrey Bogart\, as relatable as Jimmy Stewart. And unlike those other great actors\, Sidney Poitier went on to have a fabulous director of money making movies! \nJoin us for a fascinating multimedia look at the life and career of the great Sidney Poitier! \nPLEASE NOTE: CLC REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS CLASS!

SUMMARY:Rodgers And Hammerstein
DESCRIPTION:So just how good were Rodgers and Hammerstein? In a 16 year career\, they wrote 11 musicals.\n \nSix of those musical are among the very best ever produced! The greatest  hits of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II include: \n\n√ Oklahoma \n√ Carousel \nV The King and I (click here for a look at the fascinating story of the real Anna and the King!) \n√ South Pacific (click here for the amazing story of why they wanted to write about racism) \n\n√ Cinderella \n√ The Sound Of Music \nTheir shows are so brilliant\, breathtaking and visionary that 75 years after Oklahoma premiered and changed the entire course of American musical theater\, it still thrills audiences. When it was revived in 2019\, with an African American woman in the lead and a brilliant actress in a wheelchair playing Ado Annie\, it won the Tony Award as the best revival of a musical! \nUsing numerous clips from Broadway and the movies\, fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdotes\, and fascinating biographical information on each member of the team\, cultural historian (and self described Broadway Nerd) Barry Bradford will take us deep into the legacy and the impact of the greatest Broadway songwriting duo of all times: Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II! \n

SUMMARY:Jack Benny
DESCRIPTION:Jack Benny holds two unique and quite wonderful distinctions. \nFirst\, Jack Benny is almost universally regarded   by critics\, contemporaries and historians as having the best comic timing of any performer in show business. Jack Benny’s ability to take a pause\, stretch out a word\, or use a simple hand gesture or roll of the eyes to sell a joke influenced an impressive generation of comedians.  A talented student at the University of Nebraska – Johnny Carson – wrote his entire senior thesis as an analysis of  Jack Benny’s style of comedy!  Bennie’s influence can be seen in the work of  not just Carson\, but\, Bob Newhart\, Shelley Berman\,  Ray Romano and Jerry Seinfeld.  \nSecond\, Jack Benny had a lifelong\, unquestioned reputation as one of  the nicest  men in all of Hollywood. He was charitable\, kind\, considerate and gracious. He traveled endlessly to entertain the troops during World War II\, refusing to take payment from the government to do so. He would appear at any charitable function at the drop of a hat. Professionally\, he was courteous and encouraging of talent. Marilyn Monroe\, who cast a suspicious eye on the motives of many of the men in Hollywood\, absolutely adored  Jack Benny. She recognized in him a genuinely kind and thoughtful person who truly appreciated her talent. Maryland’s reaction is typical of the way almost everyone who ever worked with Jack Benny reacted to him. If you came on his top rated radio show\, you are guaranteed to have an opportunity to shine. As he famously said\, “I don’t care who gets the laughs as long as my show is funny! Jerry Seinfeld built his show in the exact same way.  \n This multimedia presentation\, laden with film clips and wonderful stories is sure to entertain and uplift you!

SUMMARY:The Election Of 1960
DESCRIPTION:The election of 1960 was one of the most dramatic elections in American history. until the halted recount in the election of 2000\, it was the closest  Presidential election in our lifetimes.  This riveting  multimedia presentation features amazing anecdotes\, entry insights\, and numerous fascinating film clips to help put this most momentous campaign into perspective. \nRichard M. Nixon was coming off of eight years serving as vice president to Dwight D. Eisenhower\, one of the most popular Republican presidents of all time. Nixon had experience in domestic and foreign-policy and was a veteran many tough campaigns. still very young\, he offered a new face for the Republican Party’s future. He became the first sitting vice president to earn his party’s nomination since John C Breckenridge exactly 100 years earlier \n  \nJohn F. Kennedy was only a few years younger than Nixon\, whom he considered something of a friend. Kennedy was seen as a lightweight in the Senate\, according to the Democrat’s Majority Leader\, Lyndon Johnson. JFK was seen as proposing no major legislation. Significantly\, Kennedy often missed long stretches of time in the Senate due to surgeries and hospitalizations. However Kennedy was a war hero\, handsome\, charismatic and a best-selling author. He had to defeat a number of older and better known Democrats to earn the nomination. \nAnd then came the campaign for president! Nixon’s national reputation vs. Kennedy’s cool and charisma. With polls showing just a slight Nixon believed throughout the summer\, the two men agreed to something that had never happened before: a series of presidential debates. Those debates turned the course of the election and changed politics\, They demonstrated the importance of television in future campaigns. Throw into the mix the rest of Martin Luther King Jr.\, Nixon’s phlebitis\, Kennedy’s mafia connections\, mystery votes in Illinois and odd campaign choices by Nixon and you have the makings of a fascinating campaign! \nPLEASE NOTE: This class is offered through the College Of Lake County and registration is required. \n

\nTO REGISTER: CLICK ON THE WEBSITE LINK BELOW! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sam Giancana - Master Of The Mob\, Murderer Of JFK?
DESCRIPTION:Forget Al Capone. \nCapone ran the Chicago Outfit brutally and very publicly for just a couple of years before being sent to prison on income tax charges. Tony Accordo and Paul Rccca ran the Outfit until 1957 when they turned over day to day control to Sam “Momo” Giancana. \nMuch More Powerful Than Capone!\nSam Giancana would rise to a position much\, much more powerful than the thuggish Al Capone ever dreamt of achieving! \nGiancana feuded with Robert Kennedy as he became the CIA liaison with the Mob. Unlike Capone\,Sam Giancana vastly expanded the operations of the Chicago Outfit into Las Vegas\, into California and became the most powerful Mafia leader in the country. He was connected to JFK through Peter Lawford and Frank Sinatra. According to a number of histories\, he and John F. Kennedy actually shared a mistress in common! Some believe Sam Giancana was behind the murder of JFK. And just before he was set to testify under oath before the Senate\, Sam Giancana was murdered in his home. A home that was under FBI surveillance and “guarded by the police! \nCuba\nWhen the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) planned to assassinate Fidel Castro\, the called on Sam Giancana to oversee the unlawful murder. While the complicated and illegal plot ultimately failed\, the implications were clear.  The CIA was working closely with Sam Giancana – the most important and influential Mafia leader in the USA. J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI only learned of the plot because they were tapping Giancana’s phone and watching him 24/7! \n  \nWomen\nGiancana carried on a very public romance with super popular\,squeaky clean\, all-American girl Phyllis McGuire\, whom the FBI bugged. He consorted with Marilyn Monroe (some say he caused her death) and other famous women.  The stories are perplexing and fascinating. You will not want to miss this one of a kind Zoom  presentation. \nThis will be a live ZOOM class\, to allow for questions at the end. THE ZOOM LINK IS BELOW! \nThe class runs Friday. MAY 29 from 11:30 am – 1 pm. \n\nSeats Available: This class is limited to 100 participants and will not be recorded. SUMMARY:1861 The Civil War Year By Year - Reflections On Amercia's Deadliest War
DESCRIPTION:1860 & 1861 The Civil War Year By Year\nEvery Wednesday in June\, we will look at a different year in the Civil War! The Declaration Of Independence stated “We hold these truths to be self evident\, that all men are created equal…” The Civil War tested whether or not we really meant it. In 1860 and 1861 the Civil War began. \nThis exciting four week series will trace the history of the Civil War. In 1860\, our nation faced one of the most crucial elections in our history.  Four great candidates stood for office.  The only real issue was slavery.  Today we see the practice of kidnapping human beings and holding them against their will as abhorrent.  In 1860\, the economy and social structure of an entire region of the United States was built on the premise that kidnapping and bondage were acceptable means of making money.  Our four week series begins with an in depth look at the Lincoln Douglas debates of 1858\, the election of 1860\, and the secession of  the Confederate States. \nIn 1861 the Civil War really began.  We saw American citizens in revolt against the Constitution while holding millions of people against their will.  We saw personal tragedies unfold as the tender hearted Abraham Lincoln saw the body of the first American patriot killed by the rebels brought back to Washington DC.  The body was that of Elmer Ellsworth.  He was a close friend of Lincoln’s. The death of Elmer Ellsworth represents the personal nature of this deadly fight. \nPeople happily brought picnic baskets to watch the First Battle Of Bull Run unfold.  By the end of the battle\, America knew was was not glamorous and victory would be difficult. Among the topics to be covered are the election of 1860\, the secession of the terrorist groups and the first year of the Civil War. \nWe will explore how in 1861 the Civil War began a great test of America’s moral purpose\, military strength and future direction began. \nToday the battlefields of the Civil War are quiet. \n \nWe will see how they were the sites of the greatest struggle in American history. \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 per class from everyone who registers for the class. You can simply pay $20.00 (or\, if you can afford it\, $25.00 with the overage covering folks who cannot afford to pay)  for the entire series or just join any individual class. SUMMARY:1862 The Civil War Year By Year- The Battle For America
DESCRIPTION:1862 The Civil War At 150\n\n\n\n\nA Nation Divided – 1862 The Civil War\n\n\n\nWhen the Civil War began\, both sides believed the war would end quickly. They could not have been more wrong. At the two day Battle of Shiloh\,there were more American casualties than in the entire Revolutionary War\, the War Of 1812 and the Mexican – American War – combined. Both sides realized that the War would be long and bloody and that the casualty count would stagger the imagination. \nThe Southern (“Confederate” traitors were helped in 1862 by good military leadership but their cause was hurt by inept political leadership fighting for the right to hold human beings as forced laborers  sexual slaves under the guise of “State’s Rights.”  \nThe United States Of America was hurt by uneven military leadership and helped enormously by political leadership that evolved and grew in purpose and resolve. \nIn this this week’s presentation we will trace the dual paths of the USA and the traitors and note the emergence of General Grant. \n  \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 per class from everyone who registers for the class. SUMMARY:The Sam Sheppard Murder Case - Victim or Liar
DESCRIPTION:They were the All-American family: a handsome\, highly respected doctor\, his beautiful\, athletic and pregnant wife\, and their adorable son. They lived in the lovely town of Bay Village Ohio. They had a comfortable home\, a secure place in the community and many friends. \nAnd then it all fell apart. \nMarilyn was brutally murdered in her bed. Her husband claimed he had been attacked  by the murderer. Immediately the local police and the Cleveland newspapers doubted his story. Many believed he had murdered his pretty wife and then staged an elaborate cover-up. The case made national news. Every statement\, every piece of evidence\, every conspiracy theory was endlessly debated by and insatiable public controversy Sheppard protested his innocence before and after he was convicted and sent to prison. But his conviction did not end the controversy. Far from it! He hired F. Lee Bailey to file his appeal and the case eventually went all the way to the United States Supreme Court! \nSheppard was eventually freed\, but not before his story\, fictionalized as “The Fugitive” had become the stuff of legend. \nTo this day\, historians and legal experts are undecided as to his guilt. Some believe he was an innocent victim\, Others say he was a clever con-artist with a clever attorney. This unique multimedia presentation will address all the questions raised by one of the most famous and notes murders in American history.

SUMMARY:Jackie Robinson
DESCRIPTION: Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. The dramatic story of how Branch Rickey defied the baseball establishment by promoting to the major leagues the first African American players ever to walk on the field is a fascinating story. \nHowever\, Jackie Robinson is more than just a symbol of integration.  First\, he was a great baseball player. A great\, great player. And then we have to recognize that Jackie Robinson was a decidedly complex and interesting man both on and off the field. As the baseball overlords knew\, very few men could have stood up against the pressure that he faced.   Jackie Robinson’s passionate involvement in the civil rights movement\, his advocacy of minority entrepreneurship\, his involvement in the political world as well as the business world each create a clearer and more complete picture of an important man. \nWe will examine both the famous story of his rise to the major leagues as well as the private story of what he had to overcome on the path to sports greatness\, including his court-martial during World War II for standing up to racism!. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing multimedia presentation! \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 per class from everyone who registers for the class.  \nPLEASE MARK “”Robinson” in the subject line on your check or e-payment! SUMMARY:The Civil War In 1863
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT! SORRY!\nOur series on the Civil War continues with one of the most exciting and meaningful years in that great conflict.\nIn 1863\, Abraham Lincoln made the rationale for winning the war not just the preservation of the Union\, but the destruction and elimination of the barbaric practice of slavery. At Gettysburg\, Lincoln made one of the most memorable speeches of all time\, declaring\,| “that government of the people\, by the people\, for the people\, shall not perish from the earth.”  \nIn 1863 Lincoln showed his great compassion and deep faith by declaring the first National Thanksgiving Day – despite the carnage of the War. \nFinally\, as battles raged and riots erupted\, President Abraham Lincoln announced the \nEmancipation Proclamation. The purpose of the Civil War had shifted\, although victory against the terrorists was still far from certain. Lincoln’s moral stance elevated the purpose of the War to something noble. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing multimedia presentation! \nSOLD OUT! SUMMARY:Medgar Evers: Is It Ever Too Late To Do The Right Thing?
DESCRIPTION:Medgar Evers Is My Hero.\nMedgar Evers\, a brave Civil Rights leader\,was assassinated in the driveway of his home\, murdered by a Ku Klax Klan leader bent on blood. \nWhat offense had Medgar Evers committed? He was trying to register African Americans to vote in Mississippi in 1963. \nHis murderer was quickly identified – but lived as a free man for thirty years until an unstoppable wife\, a dogged newspaperman and a brilliant prosecutor managed to get the case reopened.  On the fortieth anniversary of the murder\, I hosted the official National Day Of Remembrance\, and had the chance to meet and befriend his widow\, his family and many of his friends. I will bring their tremendously moving personal stories to life. \nMyrlie Evers hugs Barry Bradford students. \nOur presentation is filled with inside information on the thrilling trial\, amazing anecdotes and a heavy dose of drama.  History will come alive as you witness whether it is ever to late to do the right thing. \n

\n \nHowever\, his career should not be seen only as historic and groundbreaking. \nCOST: \nI am asking for a suggested contribution of $5.00 from everyone who registers for the class. PLEASE MARK “POITIER” in the subject line on your check or e-payment! If you are interested but cannot afford the donation\, please sign up!
