However\, this fun multimedia presentation will not cover an of them! Instead\, you’ll be introduced to some wonderful but decidedly unusual movie musicals. \nWe will see the great Harry Belafonte’s only movie musical – in which he sings music from Bizet’s opera Carmen and a stunning recreation of the Las Vegas strip\, built on a movie soundstage. Each of these unusual films is fabulous in its own way. \nOur cinematic journey will take us from a 1980 film in which Olivia Newton-John plays a daughter of Zeus who roller skates down from Mount Olympus to dance with Gene Kelly before inspiring a struggling artist to build a roller disco (seriously!) to a 1968 full-length\, kaleidoscopic animated feature using voice actors to recreate the Beatles saving us from the Blue Meanies\, this entertaining and quirky program is filled with unexpected delights! \n  \n\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:If the 1970s\, comedies tented to be the ground breakers and dramas were mostly bland and formulaic.  TV  in the 1980s tended to be quite different. While there were important comedies\, most notably  The Cosby Show\, Cheers  and The Golden Girls\, for the most part TV comedies in the 1980s  were simply pleasant diversions like Alf\, The Wonder Years\, Perfect Strangers\, & Silver Spoons. \n TV in the 1980s\nDramas began to show a much more modern style\, moving away from the predictable\, bland formulaic cop and doctor shows popular in the 1970s. Hill Street Blues\, LA Law\, 30 Something\,  & St. Elsewhere were each terrific in and of themselves. But they are popular and artistic success also points to a more mature era of television dramas. \n  \nFinally\, the 1980s were the heyday of must-see evening television soaps. Falcon Crest\, Dallas\, Knots Landing & Dynasty garnered phenomenal ratings and mesmerized many viewers. This multimedia presentation will explore what we watched and why we watched it in a transitional decade for American television. \n

SUMMARY:The Chicago Cubs - 1945 - 2016
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn the first half of the 20th century\, the Cubs were one of the mightiest teams in baseball—a perennial pennant contender despite not winning the World Series since 1908. \nThe second half of baseball’s 20th century entrenched a memorable phrase in America’s national consciousness:  The Chicago Cubs were “lovable losers.” Despite having some great players – Ernie Banks\, Ron Santo\, Billy Williams\, Fergie Jenkins\, Greg Maddux\, Mark Grace\, Ryne Sandberg\, Kerry Wood\, Carlos Zambrano\, and Sammy Sosa – the Cubs rarely reached the postseason.  More commonly\, they mostly endured one long losing season after another long losing season.  Empty bleachers\, a crumbling  Wrigley Field\, cheap ownership\, and terrible trades became the lasting hallmarks of the once mighty Chicago Cubs.  Even when the Cubs occasionally field a strong\, competitive team and begin to make a promising postseason run\, something always seems to go wrong.  The Cubs were still “lovable losers.” \nIn 1969\, a black cat running in front of Ron Santo seemed to symbolize the utter futility of the Cubs.  A customarily sure-handed first baseman let a ball go by him\, and the postseason was lost.  A hapless fan wearing headphones reached for a foul ball\, and our World Series hopes were dashed.  On and on it went.  And then came 2015!  The arrival of some of baseball’s most talented prospects created a fun\, exciting\, and competitive team.  In 2016\, the Cubs finally won the World Series! \nThe long\, slow march of the Cubs – from the cheapness and racism of the Wrigley years to the boredom and inactivity of the years of ownership by the Chicago Tribune and by Sam Zell has given way to a unique feeling of hopefulness on the part of Cub fans.  A robust ownership team brought in the financial resources and personnel necessary to begin turning the Cubs into a perennial contender once again.  In this multimedia presentation\, filled with fabulous film clips\, amazing anecdotes\, and nostalgic photos\, we will trace the confounding  Chicago Cubs from 1945 to 2016. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The 1990s were a transformative decade in American TV.. \nSimply\, the sheer number of programs on TV in the 1990s grew exponentially. This was due to the arrival of cable TV networks\, like HBO\, Cinemax\, Showtime\, and other channels offering specialized programming aimed directly at their target audience. \nWhile the broadcast networks gave us great fare like Homicide\, Life On The Streets\, Seinfeld\, The Simpsons\, NYPD Blue\, and  Northern Exposure\, we began to see competitors like the WB\, the Food Network\, and the National Geographic Network begin to expand the range of television programming. With more and better programs available\, plus the ability to tape programs\, it completely shifted the nature of the viewing experience!
