SUMMARY:Johnny Carson The King Of Late Night
DESCRIPTION:Johnny Carson\, The King Of Late Night\nFor thirty years\, America went to bed with Johnny Carson.  He was a constant presence in American popular culture from JFK until Bill Clinton. \nBut as much as America loved him\, they didn’t know him.  Carson has been called the most private man ever to be a public figure. In this fast-paced multimedia presentation\, the life of the private man will come to life – interspersed\, of course\, with clips from his many wonderful TV shows – especially The Tonight Show. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Thomas Edison Bright Ideas (PM)
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Edison (1847–1931) was a genius—and one of the most influential inventors in history. While he wasn’t drawn to theoretical science\, Edison focused on practical innovations that transformed everyday life. His inventions—such as the electric light bulb\, the motion picture camera\, the phonograph\, and even early voting machines—helped spark a technological revolution that reshaped the American economy and daily experience. \nBut there’s much more to Edison than just his inventions. \nIn this fascinating multimedia biography\, we’ll explore Edison as a visionary businessman\, a philosopher\, and a mentor. We’ll also examine some of his forward-thinking—and occasionally wrongheaded—views of society. His personal story\, including struggles with hearing loss and learning disabilities\, makes his accomplishments all the more extraordinary. \nWe’ll dive into his unusual family life\, the early signs of his genius\, the controversies over his patents\, and some of his more eccentric beliefs. You’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation of how Thomas Edison’s bright ideas continue to light up our world—both literally and figuratively. \nCOST\nThe program is available for a minimum contribution of $5.00\, which helps support my work and allows me to continue offering engaging content. \nPAYMENT OPTIONS \nCash/Check\nPayable to: Barry Bradford\nMail to:\nBarry Bradford\nP.O. SUMMARY:America's Purpose Statement: The Declaration Of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The most important sentence ever written by an American – a sentence that has inspired people in every part of the world – is found in America’s purpose statement! Click here to read more. The legacy of Washington\, Hancock\, Franklin\, Jefferson\, Adams\, Hamilton\, and Paul Revere still challenges us. \n \nOn a stifling July Thursday in 1776\, our Founding Fathers agreed to a completely unique document in the world’s history. Many revolutions had occurred over the centuries\, but never had one begun with a philosophical purpose statement. \nAlthough the Declaration of Independence has no legal power\, it has become the guiding beacon for what America strives to become. As the events of 2020 showed\, we as a nation are a world leader in human rights\, yet America is still a work in progress. \n \nWhy study the Declaration of Independence? It is the ultimate statement of what we hope to become. Freedom movements in the USA and worldwide have quoted it. \nYet many Americans know surprisingly little about it. In this exciting and thought-provoking multimedia presentation\, I will present the thrilling themes\, difficult negotiations\, contradictory\, complex\, charismatic personalities\, and exciting events leading to the most critical moment in American history. \n

SUMMARY:1975: Life in America 50 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Revisit 1975\, a year when America found itself at a crossroads. In the aftermath of Watergate\, the country was grappling with questions of trust and leadership\, while Vietnam veterans returned home to a divided nation. At the same time\, disco fever was taking over\, with songs like Gloria Gaynor’s Never Can Say Goodbye and KC and the Sunshine Band lighting up dance floors across the country. Two of the Three Stooges (Larry and Moe) died in the same year that Tiger Woods and Kate Winslet were born. \nIn the world of American popular culture\, 1975 saw the release of groundbreaking films like Jaws\, which became the first summer blockbuster\, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest\, a critical and commercial success. \nSaturday Night Live debuted on television\, changing comedy forever\, while Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run captured the hopes and frustrations of a generation. Consumer prices reflected the energy crisis\, with gas costing just 57 cents a gallon but often hard to come by due to shortages. \nThis dynamic program brings 1975 to life with a mix of visuals\, music\, and engaging stories that showcase the era’s highs and lows. Whether you’re nostalgic for bell-bottoms or curious about how the cultural shifts of the 1970s shaped America\, this presentation is a must-see. Sign up now to take a journey back to a year of transformation and unforgettable moments.

SUMMARY:1950 - Life In America 75 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:Journey to 1950\, a defining year of post-war America\, when optimism soared and new challenges emerged. The Baby Boom was reshaping family life\, and suburban living became the American ideal. Television became the centerpiece of entertainment\, with early shows like I Love Lucy laying the groundwork for modern TV culture. Meanwhile\, the Cold War began to take hold\, with the Korean War marking the first major military conflict of the era. \n1950 wasn’t just about politics and economics—it was a year of rich cultural milestones. The movie Sunset Boulevard captivated audiences with its sharp critique of Hollywood’s Golden Age\, and Ella Fitzgerald’s smooth vocals dominated the airwaves. In sports\, the New York Yankees won another World Series\, while consumer goods like frozen dinners and color televisions symbolized the growing comfort of middle-class American homes. The Tonight Show\, Bill Murray\, and Morgan Fairchild were born in the same year that George Bernard Shaw and George Orwell died. \nThis program offers a vibrant look at a year of optimism and tension\, filled with fascinating stories\, visuals\, and multimedia elements. Whether you remember 1950 or are curious to learn about it\, this engaging presentation will transport you back to a time of hope\, change\, and cultural growth. Reserve your spot now to experience the year that set the stage for modern America! \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Unusual Movie Musicals
DESCRIPTION:What is the greatest movie musical of all time? “Singin’ In The Rain\,” “Grease\,” “The Wizard Of Oz\,” “West Side Story\,” and a number of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films would pop up in many lists. However\, this fun multimedia presentation will not cover an of them! Instead\, you’ll be introduced to some wonderful but decidedly unusual movie musicals. \nWe will see the great Harry Belafonte’s only movie musical – in which he sings music from Bizet’s opera Carmen and a stunning recreation of the Las Vegas strip\, built on a movie soundstage. Each of these unusual films is fabulous in its own way. \nOur cinematic journey will take us from a 1980 film in which Olivia Newton-John plays a daughter of Zeus who roller skates down from Mount Olympus to dance with Gene Kelly before inspiring a struggling artist to build a roller disco (seriously!) to a 1968 full-length\, kaleidoscopic animated feature using voice actors to recreate the Beatles saving us from the Blue Meanies\, this entertaining and quirky program is filled with unexpected delights! \n  \nREGISTRATION IS DIRECTLY THROUGH THE NORTHBROOK SENIOR CENTER!  THE NUMBER IS BELOW!\n  \n

SUMMARY:The Integration Of Central High School - Little Rock\, 1957 (PM)
DESCRIPTION:The integration of Central High School  – Little Rock 1957 was one of the most dramatic turning points in American History. For the first time since the Supreme Court had declared school segregation illegal\, the federal government took decisive action to protect African American students’ rights. When conservative Republican President Dwight Eisenhower sent paratroopers to occupy parts of Little Rock to open the schools\, he set a precedent for the federal government once again protecting disadvantaged Minority people’s rights for the first time since Reconstruction. \nThe Integration Of Central High School – Little Rock\, 1957\nIn this dramatic\, insightful\, and continuously surprising multimedia presentation\, Presidential and Congressional award-winning civil rights historian Barry Bradford will present not only the dramatic events of 1957 but also give us great insights into the personalities\, context\, and community that surrounded the confrontation.  Terrorism and patriotism\, courage and cowardice\, presidential leadership and white supremacists all come into conflict as America has to decide whether or not we truly meant the words written in our Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.” \nCOST\nThe program is available for a minimum contribution of $5.00\, which helps support my work and allows me to continue offering engaging content. \nPAYMENT OPTIONS \nCash/Check\nPayable to: Barry Bradford\nMail to:\nBarry Bradford\nP.O. SUMMARY:David Letterman vs. Jay Leno: The Battle for The Tonight Show
DESCRIPTION:David Letterman vs. Jay Leno: Battle for The Tonight Show\nSteve Allen & Jack Paar each hosted the Tonight Show for relatively short period of time. The third host\, Johnny Carson held the chair for 30 years and made the Tonight Show the iconic program that it has become. When Carson announced his retirement\, the intense battle to succeed him between David Letterman (Carson’s choice) and Jay Leno (the safe choice) became the stuff of television legend. We know the end of the story: Jay Leno’s manager completely outmaneuvered a humiliated and embittered David Letterman. The two comics had been friends. That friendship is now just a distant memory. Letterman had been promised the job contractually by NBC\, but the behind-the-scenes machinations of Leno’s manager changed all that. Jay Leno became the fourth permanent host of The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson’s last week on the Tonight Show was a very emotional one.  The country had loved Carson and Tonight. \nWhen Jay Leno left the stage in 2014\, the reaction was different.  Although his ratings were solid\, the country did not love Jay Leno. He bristled at the fact that Letterman became the favorite of the critics and very nearly lost his show in the first year due to his poor performance. Meanwhile\, Letterman scuttled his chances of remaining at NBC by launching a personal and bitter attack against the network that had reneged on their agreement to him. David Letterman has always presented himself publicly as an idiosyncratic crank. That is a very fair assessment of his real character. Jay Leno has carefully cultivated a controlled image as the “Nicest Guy In Hollywood.” The closer you look behind the curtain\, you realize Jay Leno is not quite as nice as he seems.  The battle for control of the Tonight Show brought out the worst in Leno and left many broken relationships in its wake. \nDavid Letterman and Jay Leno \nWe’ll learn the behind-the-scenes story of the battle for the Tonight Show\, enjoy many film clips\, and gain a greater perspective on Tonight’s role in American Culture. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Integration Of Central High School - Little Rock\, 1957 (AM)
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT CHANGE:\nTHIS PROGRAM WILL BE ON MONDAY\, MAY 19 at 11:30 AM\nThe integration of Central High School  – Little Rock 1957 was one of the most dramatic turning points in American History. SUMMARY:Who Killed JFK – Historian Presents a Modern Analysis
DESCRIPTION: Who Killed JFK?\n I’ll Tell You! \n \nThe murder of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked the nation. A suspect was quickly arrested and subsequently murdered. President Lyndon Johnson appointed a blue ribbon committee – the Warren Commission – to answer the question: who killed JFK? \nThey concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. Immediately\, the public was skeptical. Stephen King described Oswald as “a semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur.” How could such an insignificant loser pull off such a dastardly crime? And why did Jack Ruby\, accused of being a Mob member\, kill Oswald? \nWe have been through with whispered knowledge of conspiracies\, confessions\, and coverups. And so the public has asked for an explanation of the “magic bullet.” \nAnd the contradictory witness statements. \nAnd Oswald’s shadowy past. \nAnd all of the “secret files.” \nAnd all of the conspiracy theories. \nAnd all of the “mysterious deaths” associated with the assassination? \nBooks\, articles\, movies\, and documentaries have raised innumerable questions about who killed JFK. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis\nSo who killed JFK? I will attempt to answer as many of these questions as possible. First\, I will attempt to separate historical fact from theory & speculation. Second\, I will show what the historical record actually indicates happened. We have access to much more information today than the Warren Commission had in 1963/4 or the House of Representatives had in 1977. Third\, we will examine what modern computer forensics can tell us about crime. For instance\, the Warren Commission had access to the “Zapruder Film.”  Today\, we can use computers to enhance and analyze the film. We can use modern technology to analyze the path of each of the bullets that were fired. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis \nAnd we can use computers to isolate the mysterious sounds a Dallas motorcycle patrolman captured.  In 1977\, the House of Representatives believed that the recording showed four shots fired in Dealy Plaza.  The National Academy of Science\, among many other groups\, have taken the same sound recordings and used state-of-the-art technology to analyze them. What do we know now? \nYou may disagree with my conclusions\, but you will definitely learn a lot and come away with a new perspective on the historical record of who killed JFK. \n

SUMMARY:Sherman's March To The Sea - Saving America By Destroying A Rebellion (PM)
DESCRIPTION:Sherman’s March To The Sea – Saving America By Destroying A Rebellion\n No military action in the bloody Civil War was probably more controversial than Sherman’s March To The Sea. After the War\, traitors who were inclined to respect Grant and revere Lincoln were unreconstructed in their hatred of William T. Sherman. Why? The brutal\, unprecedented destruction of enormous swaths of the South hastened the end of the War and sped the end of the barbarous\, immoral and inhumane practice of the enslavement\, rape and murder of the descendants of kidnap victims. Sherman hastened the demise of that unspeakable activity. However\, the utter desolation of the lives and lands of so many White Southerners had a long-lasting impact on race relations and politics. \nSherman was a complex man\, brilliant and fragile\, harsh and yet sentimental. His troops adored him\, leaders of the terrorist rebellion feared him\, and Abraham Lincoln recognized his invaluable patriotic service to our nation. \nIn this fast-paced and constantly fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will learn how Gen. William Sherman and his dedicated troops easily crushed the army of traitors who stood in their way\, in the process making military history and helping save the republic. Add to that his friendship with General Grant\, his deep respect for President Lincoln\, and his amazing life after the war – they all make for a compelling and fascinating multimedia history presentation! SUMMARY:The Marx Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Marx Brothers were much\, much better than you remember! Their humor uplifted American spirits during the Depression and established new standards for comedy. The Marx Brothers’ combination of odd and unique talents\, including a harp-playing mime\, a Jewish comic with the worst Italian accent and the most distinctive piano-playing style\, and one of the greatest monologists of all time\, have delighted and baffled classic movie fans since the Depression. They performed alongside Lucille Ball\, sang music written by Irving Berlin and acted in comedies written by the great George S. Kaufmann\, yet many people dimly think of the as analogous to The Three Stooges. \nBut when you look deeper\, you see an amazing immigrant success story\, discover how American popular culture was changing\, and meet four remarkably different and interesting men whose films rank among the best comedies of all time. “Duck Soup” is rightly considered one of the greatest films ever made about politics. Both that film and “A Night At The Opera” are on the AFI list of the 100 best movies! Whether you are a long-time fan of the Marx Brothers\, a skeptic\, or completely unfamiliar with their work\, you are in for a treat with this fun multimedia presentation! \n
