SUMMARY:Understanding The Election Of 2008
DESCRIPTION:Understanding The Election Of 2008\nIf the election of 2008 had been written as a movie script\, it could not have been more exciting. We faced the possibility that we would elect the first woman to the presidency\, the first African-American to the presidency\, or perhaps one of America’s greatest war heroes to the presidency. The nomination battles were thrilling\, the personalities were oversized\, and just when it couldn’t seem to get any more fascinating\, Sen. John McCain chose obscure Alaska  Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate! \nIn this insightful\, nonpartisan multimedia presentation\, you will learn about the backgrounds of each of the campaigns and candidates in the election of 2008. You’ll learn the very different election strategies that each pursued. We will look at the role of technology\, social media\, race\, television\, and the debates as factors in deciding an election like no other. The election of 2008 provides us a fascinating glimpse into the future of campaigning.   \nWe’ll see how social media and voter tracking began to replace conventional television advertising as a means of motivating voters.  This effort led to long lines of voters across the country. We’ll also examine how one party began to utilize restrictive voting laws as a desperate means to try and ensure victory through voter suppression. \nThe career politician and war hero against a candidate with a painfully thin resume; a vice-presidential candidate with a penchant for gaffes versus one seemingly in way over her head.  This presentation on the election of 2008 is not to be missed. \n

SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: \nI am presenting a shortened version of this at several locations. This one is different because it will be in two parts and much more comprehensive. \nFilms will be presented chronologically. \nPolitics and the movies are a match made in heaven! Movies need compelling characters\, suspenseful plots\, unexpected twists\, and a great conclusion. Politics provides all the above and then some! SUMMARY:Lincoln's Greatest Speeches
DESCRIPTION:This brand new presentation will introduce you to the greatest speeches given by our greatest president. Abraham Lincoln was a master of communication. Like FDR during World War II\, Lincoln constantly explained to Americans why we were fighting the Civil War. Although many people throughout the Union opposed him\, President Abraham Lincoln never stopped trying to bring about national consensus\, conciliation\, and cooperation. \nYou are probably very familiar with the Gettysburg address. And you may remember that President Lincoln famously called on the nation to deal with defeated traitors\, “With malice towards none and charity towards all..” but in this insightful history presentation\, we will go pull out the surface. We will look at how Lincoln used language to make sure his positions were clearly understood\, that people felt empowered\, and with the hope that he could heal a broken nation. \n

SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world. We are the only nation to land a man on the moon. Our research universities are the envy of the world. And in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election. Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the election of 2000 was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime! At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation shows how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call. We will examine what happens when both the political and judicial systems cannot resolve the result in a way that inspires confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long-range results of the elections. The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation. And the victory of George W. Bush in the election of 2000 ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \nREGISTRATION! \nThis event is live and in person! Registration is required\, and there is a fee to attend. Please contact the nice sponsors\, and they will be glad to help you! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Jewish Heroes Of The Civil Rights Movement
DESCRIPTION:Some people incorrectly think of the civil rights movement as African-American people versus white people. \nThe truth is that many white people\, including many Jewish Americans\, provided physical\, emotional\, and monetary support to the movement. It would be more accurate to describe the civil rights battles of the 1950s and 60s as a battle between good and evil. \nThis inspiring and fascinating multimedia presentation will examine how Jewish Americans committed themselves to Dr. King’s goals of freedom\, voting rights\, community\, and an end to discrimination. We will examine \n“King repeatedly used the Jewish experience as a model of success over oppression. He respected and admired the values taught by Judaism and\, as a deeply religious man\, felt inspired by the Torah itself. He was sure that an alliance between blacks and Jews was fundamental to progress in civil rights. King felt a sense of kinship with the Jewish people and welcomed — even expected – – Jewish support and felt let down when it was not forthcoming.” Rabbi Marc Schneier \nThis Is A FREE Presentation\, Live And In-Person!  \nClick Here To Register\n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The History Of NBC
DESCRIPTION:The history of NBC is perhaps the most storied and essential in broadcasting history. Its founder\, the illustrious David Sarnoff\, was the genius who turned a small local radio station into a gigantic\, influential multimedia empire\, always had dreams of greatness\, and his tremendous vision brought his network along with him. His contributions to American popular culture cannot be overstated! \nAlthough CBS had the early advantage in news broadcasting\, NBC (an offshoot of RCA) eventually caught up with Huntley and Brinkley. It took a while for NBC to compete with CBS in radio\, but stars like Bob Hope made it possible. The history of NBC in the television years is especially intriguing. The National Broadcasting CompanyThe National Broadcasting Company probably debuted color TV and eventually became a perennial rating champion. \n \nAlong the way\, NBC pioneered morning TV with ” The Today Show\,” and late-night became and NBC’s staple with “The Tonight Show” with multitalented host Steve Allen and later the iconic Johnny Carson. And at a time when no one thought that late-night weekend programming would work\, NBC revolutionized television with ”Saturday Night Live.” \nIn a more modern era\, NBC invented “Must See TV” with a powerhouse lineup that included Fiends\, Seinfeld\, ER\, Cheers and Nite Court. This kaleidoscopic multimedia presentation will have wonderful memories and great surprises around every corner! \n

DESCRIPTION:The History of Political Satire – From Mark Twin To Stephen Colbert \n“Politicians and diapers should both be changed regularly and for the same reason\,” \nor so said America’s first great political satirist\, Mark Twain.  Although the history of political satire in America begins with Twain\, we will trace its rambunctious history in this wonderful multimedia presentation \nBeginning with Mark Twain\, this funny and thought-provoking multimedia presentation will trace the rise of political satire by looking at some of its greatest practitioners\, including Will Rogers\, Mort Sahl\, Dennis Miller\, and Stephen Colbert. \nAlthough Mark Twain and Will  Rogers began the art form of political satire as public entertainment\, the history of political satire shows that it has moved from a novelty to a staple of show business. \nWith the rise of television in the 1950s\, political satire became a vastly amusing and important part of the discussion about government and elections.  Mort Sahl’s controversial monologues eventually led to the Smothers Brothers\, Saturday Night Live\, and The Daily Show. \nWith the proliferation of cable TV and late-night talk/comedy shows\, you can barely escape political comedy if you try! \nJoin us for many insights\, some fantastic history\, and hilarious film clips as we trace the history of political satire in the USA! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics
DESCRIPTION:Politics and the movies are a match made in heaven! Movies need compelling characters\, suspenseful plots\, unexpected twists\, and a  great conclusion. Politics provides all the above and then some! In this remarkable new presentation\, Best Movies About Politics\, I’ll present my admittedly idiosyncratic list of the best films ever made about American politics. Some are dramas\, and some are comedies. Some are old classics\, and some are very modern. Some are well-known\, critically acclaimed Hollywood films\, and others are amazing but obscure! \nBest Movies About Politics\nThis fun\, fascinating\, and fast-moving presentation is one of my favorites\, combining my love of great cinema with a lifelong fascination with elections. And where else will you find a list that plausibly contains Henry Fonda\, Eddie Murphy\, Kirk Douglas\, George Clooney\, and Jimmy Stewart? From directors Frank Capra and Preston Sturges to Rob Reiner and screenwriters Aaron Sorkin to Rod Serling\, some of the most incredible talent in movie history have tackled the subject of elections in films that are entertaining\, thought-provoking\, and often unforgettable. We will look at clips from some of them and consider others! \nOf course\, we will leave time for discussion and your choices. Let’s see what everyone else chooses as the best movies about politics! \nBONUS! \nClick here to read about one of the films – I’ll bet this is a new one for you! \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Civil War Stories - Reflections On Amercia's Deadliest War
DESCRIPTION:1860 & 1861 The Civil War At 150\nA Nation Divided – 1860 1861 The Civil War \nThe Declaration Of Independence boldly stated “We hold these truths to be self evident\, that all men are created equal…” The Civil War tested whether or not we really meant it. In 1860\, our nation faced one of the most crucial elections in our history.  Four great candidates stood for office.  The only real issue was slavery. \nToday\, we see the practice of kidnapping human beings and holding them against their will as abhorrent.  In 1860\, the economy and social structure of an entire region of the United States were built on the premise that kidnapping and bondage were acceptable means of making money.  Our four-week series begins with an in-depth look at the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858\, the election of 1860\, and the secession of the Confederate States. In 1861\, the Civil War really began.  We saw American citizens in revolt against the Constitution while holding millions of people against their will.  We saw personal tragedies unfold as the tender-hearted Abraham Lincoln saw the body of the first American patriot killed by the rebels brought back to Washington\, DC.  It was Elmer Ellsworth.  He was a close friend of Lincoln’s. The death of Elmer Ellsworth represents the personal nature of this deadly fight. People happily brought picnic baskets to watch the First Battle Of Bull Run unfold.  By the end of the battle\, America knew war was not glamorous and victory would be difficult. We will explore how\, in 1861\, the Civil War began a great test of America’s moral purpose\, military strength\, and future direction. Today the battlefields of the Civil War are quiet. \nThe Battlefield at Bull Run \nWe will see how they were the sites of the greatest struggle in American history.

SUMMARY:The Patient Is The President - Deaths And Near Deaths
DESCRIPTION:The assassination of John F. Kennedy shocked the nation. As the mortally wounded President was rushed to Parkland Hospital\, surgeons scrambled to try and save him. When the patient is the President\, the whole nation is watching the every move of the doctors. Since that fateful day in November 1963\, every choice\, action\, and report of the medical team has been scrutinized and second-guessed by professionals and laymen alike. As a result of the historical Monday morning quarterbacking of the public\, every medical treatment of every President since has been reported in minute detail! \nThis unique and fast-paced multimedia presentation will have you enthralled as we watch doctors desperately work to save the lives of Presidents Lincoln\, Garfield\, and Reagan after they were shot. We will also look at how other Presidential health crises were handled (or mishandled) by physicians. For instance\, President John Tyler might well have lived had his doctors simply done nothing at all!  Woodrow Wilson’s crippling stroke was kept secret from the public\, the media\, and even the Congress by his doctor. In each case\, we will look at what was done\, what wasn’t done and whether medicine today might have changed the diagnosis\, treatment or the outcome! \n
