SUMMARY:The Swinging\, Controversial Life Of Frank Sinatra - Part Two
DESCRIPTION:Frank Sinatra was one of the most charismatic and controversial American entertainers of all time. \nHe was one of a kind!  \nClick here to read about his amazing record on Civil Rights. \nIn this brand-new multimedia presentation\, I will trace the biography of Sinatra’s improbable life. We will look at his odd childhood as a skinny Italian street kid in working-class Hoboken\, New Jersey. His father was a prizefighter turned saloon keeper; his mother was a hard-drinking suffragette and political power in Hoboken who also made a living by performing abortions. We will look at Sinatra’s bumpy road to stardom. His career had so many ups and downs! Frank Sinatra seemed unstoppable from singing with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey big bands to being the idol of the Bobby Sox brigades in the early 1940s. But when he avoided serving in World War II and musical tastes began to shift\, his career went into a steep decline that was only rescued by the help of the Mafia and his amazing performance in the movie “From Here To Eternity.” \n \nThe rest of the story is equally fascinating. It includes Swingin’ Sinatra\, the Rat Pack\, JFK\, Marilyn Monroe\, and civil rights. So are Lucky Luciano\, Sam Giancana\, Skinny D’Amato\, Jilly Rizzo\, and the Mafia. (Click here to read about how Peter Lawford connected Sinatra to JFK!)In this one-of-a-kind presentation filled with video clips\, amazing anecdotes\, and insightful analysis\, we will look at all sides of the one and only Chairman of the Board\, Frank Sinatra. \n

SUMMARY:Harding And Coolidge - Republican Presidents Of The 1920s
DESCRIPTION:After  World War I ended\, America turned away from the liberal progressive era of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and made a sharp turn toward conservatism. In 1920\, the Republicans nominated for president Warren G Harding\, an amiable Sen. from Ohio who promised “A return to normalcy.” For eight years\, the Republicans controlled the presidency\, Congress\, and the national debate. Within twelve fascinating years\, the economy had gone from boom to bust\, and the “Roaring Twenties” had given way to the Great Depression. The seemingly perennial GOP majority evaporated with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt. \nWho were the Republican presidents whose pro-business\, low-tax\, conservative presidencies led to an explosion and then the demolition of the American economy? They were very dissimilar in their backgrounds\, each with a fascinating back story that you will learn about in this unique multimedia presentation. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, email me\, and I will waive your fee. You know her as the seemingly sweet we but secretly scheming sexpot Sue Anne Nivens on the iconic  “Mary Tyler Moore Show\,” the endearing\, naïve\, and trusting Rose Nyland on the classic  “Golden Girls\,” and the outrageous and somewhat loopy Elka Ostrovsky on ” Hot in Cleveland.” \n Betty White has been a staple on talk shows\, a host and panelist on game shows\, and has even performed in some popular movies\, including one classic film drama about politics in which she played a U.S. Senator! \nYou may not know that Betty White was a pioneer in the early days of television\, being the first woman to produce her own show!  The amazing Ms. White is a best-selling author and tireless advocate for animals. Most importantly\, she is widely considered one of the nicest people in all show business. This warm\, charming\, and funny presentation is loaded with hilarious video clips and great stories about the one and only Betty White. \nREGISTRATION: Call the Niles Senior Center! A lovely lunch is included in the price. \n

SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world.  We are the only nation to have landed a man on the moon\, and our research universities are the envy of the world.  But in the year 2000\, we were confronted by an uncomfortable reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable to count the votes from a Presidential election.  Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third-party candidates\, poorly designed ballots\, and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the 2000 election was not the first time a Presidential election went into overtime!  At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation shows how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call.  We will examine what happens when both the political and judicial systems cannot resolve the result in a way that inspires confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long-range results of the elections.  The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation.  George W. Bush’s victory in the 2000 election ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Gideon\, Escobedo\, Miranda - Protecting The Accused
DESCRIPTION:  \nMiranda rights have become so familiar that most of us can recite them from memory – even though we have never been accused of a crime! \nThe “Warren Court” of the 1960s was tasked with interpreting the Bill Of Rights for an America that James Madison could not have envisioned.  They revolutionized our understanding of the rights of defendants and expanded our knowledge of the Constitution. \nThe “Roberts Court” of today has the same problem.  Consider: how does the original interpretation of the Federal Constitution apply in situations that did not exist in 1787?  When James Madison and the  Founders wrote the original Constitution\, they did not envision the need to search automobiles for cocaine\, stop terrorist hijackers from bringing shoe bombs on airplanes\, the need to search locked personal cell phones for call history that might be used to solve a kidnapping or deal with the admissibility of electronic surveillance gathered from drones? \nIn this fascinating multimedia presentation\, you will learn the historical background and continuing impact of three of the most critical cases in Supreme Court history. \n

SUMMARY:America's Greatest First Ladies
DESCRIPTION:Who were America’s Greatest First Ladies?\nNobody really knows! \nToday\, the press and public pay great attention to the President’s spouse.  However\, the role of the First Lady was not given so much as a moment’s thought by the Founding Fathers.  The title “First Lady” itself was not even widely used until the 1850s!  Nonetheless\, our First Ladies represent a fantastic array of accomplished women\, each with a unique story and a unique place in American History. \nI will list my top ten favorite First Ladies in this original series.  I promise that at least a couple of my choices will be women you would have never considered! \nOf course\, you know about the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt.  But did you know that the lives of children\, women\, and pediatricians are made better every day in fundamental ways by the legacy of First Lady Harriet Lane?  Or that almost a century before Jackie Kennedy\, we had a younger First Lady who became an icon of style in the White House while raising adorable children?  (Click here to read about Frances Cleveland\, pictured on the magazine cover.) \nAlthough there are so many fascinating stories in this multimedia presentation!  It is not merely a collection of trivia.  Instead\, we will examine how the historical roles of women have changed from the days of the marvelous Martha Washington\, an enslaver\, to the modern Michelle Obama\, the descendant of enslaved people! \nREGISTRATION—This event is live and in person. SUMMARY:The Chicago Cubs - 1945 - 2016
DESCRIPTION:THIS PROGRAM IS FREE\, LIVE\, AND IN-PERSON! \nIn the first half of the 20th century\, the Cubs were one of the mightiest teams in baseball—a perennial pennant contender despite not winning the World Series since 1908. \nThe second half of baseball’s 20th century entrenched a memorable phrase in America’s national consciousness:  The Chicago Cubs were “lovable losers.” Despite having some great players – Ernie Banks\, Ron Santo\, Billy Williams\, Fergie Jenkins\, Greg Maddux\, Mark Grace\, Ryne Sandberg\, Kerry Wood\, Carlos Zambrano\, and Sammy Sosa – the Cubs rarely reached the postseason.  More commonly\, they mostly endured one long losing season after another long losing season.  Empty bleachers\, a crumbling  Wrigley Field\, cheap ownership\, and terrible trades became the lasting hallmarks of the once mighty Chicago Cubs.  Even when the Cubs occasionally field a strong\, competitive team and begin to make a promising postseason run\, something always seems to go wrong.  The Cubs were still “lovable losers.” \nIn 1969\, a black cat running in front of Ron Santo seemed to symbolize the utter futility of the Cubs.  A customarily sure-handed first baseman let a ball go by him\, and the postseason was lost.  A hapless fan wearing headphones reached for a foul ball\, and our World Series hopes were dashed.  On and on it went.  And then came 2015!  The arrival of some of baseball’s most talented prospects created a fun\, exciting\, and competitive team.  In 2016\, the Cubs finally won the World Series! \nThe long\, slow march of the Cubs – from the cheapness and racism of the Wrigley years to the boredom and inactivity of the years of ownership by the Chicago Tribune and by Sam Zell has given way to a unique feeling of hopefulness on the part of Cub fans.  A robust ownership team brought in the financial resources and personnel necessary to begin turning the Cubs into a perennial contender once again.  In this multimedia presentation\, filled with fabulous film clips\, amazing anecdotes\, and nostalgic photos\, we will trace the confounding  Chicago Cubs from 1945 to 2016. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics
DESCRIPTION:Live\, In Person\, And Open To The Public! \nPolitics and the movies are a match made in heaven! Movies need compelling characters\, suspenseful plots\, unexpected twists\, and a  great conclusion. Politics provides all the above and then some! In this remarkable new presentation\, Best Movies About Politics\, I’ll present my admittedly idiosyncratic list of the best films ever made about American politics. Some are dramas\, and some are comedies. Some are old classics\, and some are very modern. Some are well-known\, critically acclaimed Hollywood films and others are amazing but obscure! \nBest Movies About Politics\nThis fun\, fascinating\, and fast-moving presentation is one of my favorites\, combining my love of great cinema with a lifelong fascination with elections. And where else will you find a list that plausibly contains Henry Fonda\, Eddie Murphy\, Kirk Douglas\, George Clooney\, and Jimmy Stewart? From directors Frank Capra and Preston Sturges to Rob Reiner and screenwriters Aaron Sorkin to Rod Serling\, some of the most incredible talent in movie history have tackled the subject of elections in films that are entertaining\, thought-provoking\, and often unforgettable. We will look at clips from some of them and consider others! \nOf course\, we will leave time for discussion and your choices. Let’s see what everyone else chooses as the best movies about politics! \nBONUS! \nClick here to read about one of the films – I’ll bet this is a new one for you! \nREGISTRATION! \nThis event is live! Registration is required\, and there is a fee to attend. Please contact the nice sponsors\, and they will be glad to help you! \n  \n  \n  \n
