We end with Eleanor Roosevelt and begin with Mary Lincoln. This is certainly a distinctive mix of personalities and aspirations! We will look at the “traditional” First Ladies who took on the role of wife and mother and shunned the spotlight. This group includes Caroline Harrison\,  Ida McKinley\, and Julia Grant. Frances Cleveland carved out a very different niche for herself\, raising a young family while bringing glamour back to the White House. Several of the  First Ladies in this group were transformative figures. Nellie Taft\, Edith Wilson and Eleanor Roosevelt were tremendously influential in their husband’s administrations. We will look at the roots of the war\, the Declaration of Independence\, the early battles including Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill before transitioning into a longer look at the seven years of fighting necessary for America to begin its experiment in participatory democracy. DESCRIPTION:TV IN THE 1970s \nWhat was television like in the 1970s? \nIt was the decade of Roots and the decade of The Love Boat. Silly television comedies were everywhere! The 1970s was the decade of Laverne & Shirley\, The Fonz\, Mork and Mindy\, WKRP\, Three’s Company and both The Brady Bunch and the Partridge Family.  \nDramas became very formulaic and for the most part fairly bland. But Norman Lear created All in the Family a groundbreaking comedy that led to a national debate about racism\, conservatism\, homophobia\, abortion\, mental illness and almost every important social issue of the time. And they did so in a way that was so funny that the show was the top ranked show on television for a record five consecutive years. As Archie Bunker became the voice of  Richard Nixon’s “Silent Majority” other topical comedies such as Chico and the Man\, The Jeffersons\, Sanford and Son\, Maude\, and Good Times  began to change the face of what television situation comedies would look like. \nPerhaps no one  changed the role of women on television more than Mary Tyler Moore.  Her program broke ground with a monumentally popular view of a single working woman in a professional career.   \nFinally\, M*A*S*H   captivated America with his unique and unforgettable combination  of drama\, comedy\, politics and personality set against the backdrop of the Korean War but really opening a discussion about what had happened in Vietnam. \n  \nThis fast-moving multimedia presentation is more than just nostalgic. While there were important comedies\, most notably  The Cosby Show\, Cheers  and The Golden Girls\, for the most part TV comedies in the 1980s  were simply pleasant diversions like Alf\, The Wonder Years\, Perfect Strangers\, & Silver Spoons. \n TV in the 1980s Dramas  began to show a much more modern style\, moving away from the  predictable\, bland  formulaic cop and doctor shows popular in the 1970s. Hill Street Blues\, LA Law\, 30 Something\,  & St. Elsewhere were each terrific in and of themselves. DESCRIPTION:Sidney Poitier is\, without question\, one of the greatest actors in the history of American film. \nAdditionally\, Sidney Poitier is the man who broke the color barrier in Hollywood. Like Barack Obama or Jackie Robinson\, he was more than just a symbol. He was a man of great talent\, skill and accomplishment. His success was not only his\, but a reminder of how America had squelched the talents of so many talented citizens.  \nMany fans of the “Golden Era” of “classic films” – including myself – have had to come to grips with the racist\, segregationist nature of those movies. Judy Garland\, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant were great actors and their films remain wildly enjoyable. But look at the films as a whole and you will see the leading roles are all played by white actors. Black actors appear as slaves\, domestics\, field hands\, or drivers. As great as Garland\, Astaire and Grant were\, it’s important to remember they were given opportunities denied to Lena Horne\, the Nicholas Brothers or any black man before Sidney Poitier. The racism of classic Hollywood denied us from appreciating some great talent. Just as the quality of baseball became better when it integrated\, so did movies improve after Sidney Poitier helped open the door. A society is stronger when all its citizens can participate. \nHowever\, his career should not be seen only as historic and groundbreaking. He was a great actor! Sidney Poitier\, in his best roles\, was simply magnificent. \nWatch “The Defiant Ones\,” “Blackboard Jungle\,” “Lillies Of The Field\,” “In The Heat Of The Night\,” “To Sir\, With Love\,” and “A Patch Of Blue” and you see a great actor at the top of his game. You can even see him in a movie with Dan Aykroyd! Poitier could be as suave as Cary Grant\, as intense as Humphrey Bogart\, as relatable as Jimmy Stewart.
