SUMMARY:Cole Porter - Risque Master Of American Music
DESCRIPTION:Cole Porter is one of the greatest songwriters in American history. His melodies were sublime. His lyrics were clever\, witty\, sophisticated\, original and naughty. Cole Porter was the ultimate European oriented sophisticate – yet he was born in tiny Peru\, Indiana! \nThe list of songs written by Porter includes some of the greatest entries in the great American Songbook!  Consider: \nLET’S DO IT (LET’S FALL IN LOVE) (1928) \n NIGHT AND DAY (1932) \nANYTHING GOES (1934) \n DON’T FENCE ME IN (1934) \nI GET A KICK OUT OF YOU (1934) \nBEGIN THE BEGUINE (1935) \n I’VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN (1936) \nIT’S DE-LOVELY (1936) \nPorter’s legacy was further assured by brilliant Broadway shows like “Kiss Me Kate” and “Can-Can.” But beneath the surface of this bon-vivant lay a tortured soul. Cole Porter lived in both psychic and physical pain much of his life. His life story\, his personality and his unforgettable music combine for a memorable multimedia presentation!

SUMMARY:Queen Elizabeth
DESCRIPTION:At this writing\, Queen Elizabeth is the longest reigning monarch in the world. A shy young girl when she ascended the throne\, she saw her uncle abdicate the throne and advocate pro-German views in the years leading up to World War II. She watched as her father struggled to overcome a speech impediment and then work tirelessly to inspire the British people during the Second World War. His death at a young age propelled and unprepared and timid girl to the most important throne in Europe. \nQueen Elizabeth’s 50 year reign has seen an enormous changes to the British monarchy\, the nation she serves and to the world at large. We will examine how Queen Elizabeth has grown in the job despite major stumbles including her epic mishandling of the sudden\, tragic death of Princess Diana. Her unparalleled life give us great insight into the changes brought about by a rapidly changing world in the wake of World War II. \n

SUMMARY:Diana: Life And Death Of The People's Princess
DESCRIPTION:Diana: Glamorous And Tragic Life And Death Of a Princess\n She was the “People’s Princess” beloved for her compassion as much as for her glamour. \nSweet\, pretty Lady Diana Spencer was a shy and charming kindergarten teacher when she caught the eye of Prince Charles\, heir to the throne of Great Britain. At first\, to the public\, her story seemed like a fairytale. A pretty young girl had been plucked out of obscurity to marry the dashing Prince. But the truth of Diana’s private life was very\, very different from the public perception.   \nIn 1981\, an estimated 750 million people around the world watched the 20-year-old Diana marry her Prince amidst all the pomp and circumstance of the British Empire. But barely more than 10 years later she was bitterly divorced with two children\, suffering from severe depression and eating disorders\, brought out on by the realization that her cool and diffident husband had been having an affair with a long time girlfriend. \nAfter Princess Diana’s ugly public divorce\, she became an outcast from the British Royal family. Despite that\, she became even more beloved by the British public! She was seen as an affectionate and doting mother\, an icon of fashion style\, and most importantly as a tireless champion for humanitarian causes. Diana met with Mother Teresa in an effort to bring attention to the global aid epidemic. She risked her life to try and read war zones of the scourge of land mines. \nWherever she went\, whatever she did and whomever she dated\, Diana’s her every move was followed by the insatiable British press. They detailed DIana’s every date\, every vacation\, and every outfit. \nWhen Princess Diana died in a horrible car crash she was mourned by the world. Diana’s unexpected life\, veering between glamour and tragedy and her sudden and controversial death make for an unforgettable story. \n  \nPLEASE NOTE: This event is free\, but space is limited!  Please reserve your spot in advance!

SUMMARY:The Chicago Cubs - 1945 - 2016
DESCRIPTION:In the first half of the 20th century\, the Cubs were one of the mightiest teams in all of baseball – a perennial pennant contender despite not winning the World Series since 1908. \nThe second half of baseball’s 20th century entrenched an indelible phrase in America’s national consciousness:  The Chicago Cubs were “lovable losers.” Despite having some absolutely great players – Ernie Banks\, Ron Santo\, Billy Williams\, Fergie Jenkins\, Greg Maddux\, Mark Grace\, Ryne Sandberg\, Kerry Wood\, Carlos Zambrano\, and Sammy Sosa – the Cubs rarely reached the postseason. More commonly\, they mostly endured one long losing season after another long losing season.  Empty bleachers\, a crumbling  Wrigley Field\, cheap ownership and terrible trades became the lasting hallmarks of the once mighty Chicago Cubs. Even when the Cubs would field occasionally field a strong\, competitive team and begin to make a promising  postseason run\, something always seemed to go wrong. The Cubs were still “lovable losers.” \nIn 1969\, a black cat running in front of Ron Santo  seemed to symbolize the utter futility of the Cubs.A normally sure handed first baseman let a ball go by him and the postseason was lost. A hapless fan wearing headphones reached for a foul ball and our World Series hopes were dashed. On and on it went. And then came 2015!  The arrival of some of the most talented prospects in baseball history created a team that was fun\, exciting and competitive. In 2016\, the Cubs finally won the World Series! \nThe long\, slow\, march of the Cubs – from the cheapness and racism of the Wrigley years\, to the boredom and inactivity of the years of ownership by the Chicago Tribune and by Sam Zell have given way to a unique feeling of hopefulness on the part of Cub fans.  A robust ownership team brought in the financial resources and personnel necessary to begin turning the Cubs into a perennial contender once again. In this multimedia presentation\, filled  with fabulous film clips\, amazing anecdotes\, and nostalgic photos\, we will trace  the confounding  Chicago Cubs from 1945 to 2016. \n  \nPlease note – This is a special event and you are invited! \nPlease join Wintrust Platinum Adventures for the presentation AND lunch! Lunch includes a house salad\, rolls\, and your choice of entrée: oven roasted chicken\, baked ziti\, or tilapia filet. For dessert\, a sundae that is sure to delight! You won’t want to miss this “out of the park” event!  \nCOST: PLATINUM ADVENTURES MEMBERS $38 | NON-MEMBERS $44.  \nADVANCE RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. SUMMARY:Ernie Pyle - The Voice Of G.I. Joe
DESCRIPTION:Ernie Pyle was one of the greatest reporters in American history. after writing one of the most popular and widely published newspaper columns in the USA\, he became the voice of the average infantry soldier during World War II. In this role\, Ernie Pyle became legendary. \nThe Second World War was covered by a number of brilliant journalists. Edward R. Murrow broadcast brilliantly from the rooftops of London\, William L. Shirer personally witnessed the entry of Hitler into Austria and Walter Cronkite tirelessly covered the War for the United Press. Each filed memorable reports that helped Americans better understand the War. \nMeanwhile\, Ernie Pyle carved out an unforgettable niche for himself. Instead of covering the “big picture” of the War\, Pyle traveled alongside the infantry. He became what we today would call an embedded journalist. Marching alongside the average G.I. Joe – a term he helped popularize – Ernie Pyle reported the “little picture.” He recorded the daily gripes and fears and small moments of humor encountered by the foot soldiers marching through Italy and then Germany. Millions of Americans read his column every day. His prose was crisp and observant and caring and sardonic. \nWhen the War ended in Europe\, Ernie Pyle went to join the forces preparing to invade Japan. On Okinawa\, Ernie Pyle was killed by a sniper. The grief felt by his millions of readers and the entire Army was all but immeasurable. Tributes flowed from the President\, from the leaders of the American military and from journalists around the world. Perhaps the simple plaque erected by the soldiers who had marched alongside him would have been his favorite memorial. It read: \nAt this spot \nThe 77th Infantry Division  \nLost a buddy. \nERNIE PYLE. \n18 April 1945 \nTo this day\, Ernie Pyle’s unique life\, unforgettable writing\, and tragic death place him in the pantheon of great correspondents. The School Of Journalism at Indiana University is named for Ernie Pyle and a number of books and a movie have helped keep his memory alive. Even Snoopy would regularly hist a can of K-Rations on the anniversary of Ernie Pyle’s death on the island of Okinawa. \nPlease join me for a unique and powerful multimedia presentation!

SUMMARY:Al Capone - Master Of The Mob
DESCRIPTION:Organized crime came in with a bang – literally – with the rise of prohibition. And no city was more under the control of the mob than Chicago. This exciting look at the rise of the Chicago mob in the early days culminating with Al Capone finishes with a fascinating look at how Sam Giancana changed the Syndicate in Chicago from a group of bootlegging dogs to an international powerhouse that influenced American presidential elections and American foreign-policy. We’ll examine how ethnic neighborhoods\, Chicago city politics and the Kennedy administration all played into the tremendous influence of organized crime in Chicago. \nAl Capone was one of the most famous gangsters in American History.  Unlike many organized crime leaders\, he did little to hide his identity. He was seen at Wrigley Field chatting with star catcher Gabby Hartnett. \nGabby Hartnett Chats With Al Capone \nhosting soup kitchens for the unemployed and even appearing on the cover of Time Magazine. \nThe true story of Capone’s rise and fall is complex and unexpected. He began a hoodlum in Brooklyn\, working for Frankie Yale\, the first man to begin organizing the mob in New York. Capone moved to Chicago to assist Frankie Torrio\, second in command of the Chicago mob.  With ferocity and force\, Capone would come to head the Chicago outfit – before a meek bookkeeper and the tax laws brought him down! \n  \nGreat news!  This program is open to the public and free!  Contact the venue ahead of time to reserve a seat! \n

SUMMARY:Richard J. To Rahm: Modern Mayors Of Chicago
DESCRIPTION:For two tumultuous decades\, Richard J Daley was indisputably the all powerful mayor of the city of Chicago. From 1955 until 1976\, his name was synonymous with “The City That Works.” At times\, it seemed as if he would be mayor for ever. When he died very suddenly\, the city was shocked to learn that there was no clear-cut successor outlined in city ordinances! For a full week\, it was not clear from either a legal or a political standpoint who actually had succeeded him as mayor. \n  \nIn this fascinating and unique multimedia series\, we will look at the colorful\, charismatic\, controversial men and woman who served as mayor of Chicago after the death of  long time Mayor Richard J Daley. Jane Byrne was the first woman to be mayor but her quirky personality undercut her idiosyncratic efforts at political reform. Chicago’s first African-American mayor\, Harold Washington was initially elected by a bitterly divided electorate. Despite ongoing battles with the obstinate City Council\, he then won a crushing reelection victory. Washington’s attempts to change the way Chicago does business ended abruptly with his death in office early in his second term. Richard M Daley wanted to move Chicago into becoming a technological city as opposed to an industrial mecca. Although he served as mayor longer than his father\, the constant controversies\, scandals\, and arrests of his allies marred the legacy of a mayor who rebuilt Chicago’s image. \nRichard M. Daley served as mayor even longer than his father did!  The significant accomplishments of his first two terms were obscured by a growing number of serious scandals during the later years of his reign. \nWith Mayor Rahm Emanuel under fire\, facing calls to resign\, it is fascinating to look at the varied life stories\, unique elections and mixed records of the men and woman who have guided Chicago since the death of Richard J. Daley.

SUMMARY:Dorothy Kilgallen
DESCRIPTION:Dorothy Kilgallen is best remembered today as a somewhat flinty regular panelist on the game show\, “I’ve Got a Secret.”  \nHowever\,  this groundbreaking woman was a pioneer in journalism. And her role in attacking the conclusions of the Warren Commission became in enormously important and highly controversial as Americans began to question the conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin of Pres. Kennedy! \nDorothy Kilgallen  was the first woman in America ever to be a full-time murder reporter. She broke numerous major scoops andoften  made national headlines with her fearless coverage of criminal trials. \nWhen Dorothy Kilgallen learned that a male newspaper reporter was going to try to break the record for the fastest trip around the world\, Dorothy Kilgallen  decided to challenge him to a race. Her exploits not only made her famous but were even fictionalized in a movie!  \nThis fame led her to New York and a position as both a serious reporter and a catty gossip columnist covering Broadway. Her unique career led her into a major feud with Frank Sinatra\, put her in a position to break open the Sam Shepard murder case and  break the story of Marilyn Monroe’s affair with Pres. John F. Kennedy. \nDorothy Kilgallen  became the first mainstream newspaper Porter in the country to question the Warren Commission. She endlessly attacked them\, always hinting that she knew more than she was saying at the moment. When she died under very mysterious circumstances\, many people concluded that she was murdered to shut her up about what she knew about the assassination of JFK. \nIn this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will learn the unexpected\, unparalleled and definitely unique story of the life and death of an amazing woman.

SUMMARY:The Declaration of Independence – America's Purpose Statement
DESCRIPTION:Signing Of The Declaration Of Independence \nThe Declaration Of Independence – America’s Purpose Statement\nIt was a moment that changed the history of the world forever. Throughout recorded time\, there had been innumerable revolutions\, revolts\, and separatist movements. But never had such a group of educated men decided to place the context of their revolution in the scope of human rights and do so with a written document that inspires people to this day. The bold committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence\, primarily Thomas Jefferson\, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams understood that the Revolution was about something more profound than simply political rights or taxation. They understood the importance of the moment.  Drawing on the natural rights of men\, they made the American Revolution a struggle for the concepts of equality and democracy. The Founding Fathers saw a higher purpose for their actions. With a major American city under siege and occupied by foreign soldiers their very lives were on the line. \nYet the Continental Congress stood their ground by approving a document that contained the most important sentence ever written by an American.  The thrilling events that led to the Declaration of Independence and its actual meaning and influence on America will come to life in this exciting multimedia presentation. \nWe will focus on the importance of the Declaration of Independence. We will see how it has inspired and motivated generations of Americans.  In addition\, we will see how Abraham Lincoln elevated it in the minds of the American people.
