SUMMARY:The Democratic Convention Of 1968
DESCRIPTION:1968 Democratic Convention\n \n“The Whole World Is Watching!  The Whole World Is Watching! So when the chant from thousands of protesters caught in a pitched battle with the police on the streets of Chicago is the Democratic Party sought to nominate a candidate for president. The Democratic convention riots of 1967 were turning point in history of politics and in the history of Chicago. Never before had live television cameras cameras captured what was later termed a “police riot” live on television.  While the battle of Chicago raged wildly on Michigan Avenue\, the tension erupted in violence and anger in the convention hall itself. \nAs the nation watched  in disbelief\, convention delegates and network reporters were beaten\, delegate credentials were forged in an effort to pack the galleries with Chicago city employees\, and the mayor of the city\, Richard J Daley\, screamed an obscenity at a Jewish United States senator on live television. \nIn this exciting multimedia presentation\, we will explore the roots of the events that culminated in the riots of 1968. From growing public frustration to the stalemate in Vietnam in the wake of the Tet Offensive to the insurgent campaign of Sen. Eugene McCarthy\, politics in America were thrown into turmoil. And just as the country seemed more and more to be spinning out of control\, we were hit with the shock of the public assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King and Sen. Robert F.  Kennedy. All of these events and many more makes for an exceptionally exciting\, thought-provoking\, and mesmerizing presentation.

SUMMARY:Gene Kelly
DESCRIPTION:It is one of the single most iconic moments in the history of the movies: Gene Kelly dancing with absolute joy in a rainstorm in Singing In The Rain. \nThat unforgettable moment showcases so many things – a brilliant dancer and choreographer at the height of his powers is highlighted on a magnificent set\, singing a glorious song that reflects every reason why we love going to the movies in the first place. \nLike King Kong atop the Empire State Building\, Dorothy clicking her heels\, Indiana Jones running from the boulder or Cary Grant chased by an airplane\, that moment is forever etched in the minds of movie lovers. \nIn this fast moving and fun multimedia biography we will look at the life\, career\, personality and art of the great Gene Kelly. We will trace his Pittsburgh roots and follow him as a cocky kid determined to conquer dance\, Broadway and Hollywood. He redefined dance on the silver screen. Gene Kelly ditched Fred Astaire’s top hot and tails\, replacing them with a sweatshirt and loafers. His masculine dancing\, emphasis on ballet\, inventive use if props and partners all combined to make his films immediately unique and completely unforgettable. We will see clips of him dancing with partners as different as Rita Hayworth\, Fred Astaire\, Judy Garland and Jerry The Mouse! \nCome prepared to smile – and tap your toes!

SUMMARY:Jackie Robinson
DESCRIPTION: Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. The dramatic story of how Branch Rickey defied the baseball establishment by promoting to the major leagues the first African American players ever to walk on the field is a fascinating story. \nHowever\, Jackie Robinson is more than just a symbol of integration.  First\, he was a great baseball player. A great\, great player. And then we have to recognize that Jackie Robinson was a decidedly complex and interesting man both on and off the field. As the baseball overlords knew\, very few men could have stood up against the pressure that he faced.   Jackie Robinson’s passionate involvement in the civil rights movement\, his advocacy of minority entrepreneurship\, his involvement in the political world as well as the business world each create a clearer and more complete picture of an important man. \nWe will examine both the famous story of his rise to the major leagues as well as the private story of what he had to overcome on the path to sports greatness\, including his court-martial during World War II for standing up to racism!. \n Important note: registration is required. There is a small fee to attend if you are not a member of the Highland Park Senior Center. Please contact the venue for information or assistance in the registration process.
