SUMMARY:Best Actors Never to Win an Oscar
DESCRIPTION:America has been in love with the movies for over 100 years. And every year the race for the Oscar is closely watched by movie fans around the world. Winning the Academy award connotes something special in the history of film. Movie buffs debate the winners and losers\, the snubs and the surprises.  But since the 1920s\, the Academy Awards have built a long historical record that we can examine. And that record definitely contains some extremely surprising omissions.   In this fun and fast multimedia presentation\, we will look at which highly regarded actors \nPeter O’Toole As Alan Swan in “My Favorite Year \nhave never won the Academy award. We will not be considering one specific film performance but\, rather\, the larger question of why a great body of work never yielded an Oscar. How did great actors from Hollywood’s golden past such as Peter O’Toole\, Cary Grant\, & Richard Burton never win an Oscar? And how has the Academy award escaped actors working today such as  Leonardo DiCaprio\, Johnny Depp\, and Harrison Ford who have made some of the most highly acclaimed films ever? Don’t miss this fun presentation!

SUMMARY:Rita Hayworth - American Royalty
DESCRIPTION:Rita Hayworth – American Royalty\nThe pin-up photo of Rita Hayworth hung above the bunks of World War II American soldiers\, airmen and sailors and airmen all over the world. She was called “The Love Goddess” and Fred Astaire declared her his best dance partner. In the 1940s\, Rita Hayworth was one of the most popular movie stars of her time. \nAt the height of her fame\, she married two of the most famous men in the world. First\, she accepted a proposal from the brilliant Orson Welles. They seemed like the ultimate Hollywood gamor/power couple. After that marriage failed\, “The Love Goddess was wooed and pursued by one of the world’s wealthiest and most famous prines: the fabled Aly Khan. \nThe marriage of Hollywood’s sexiest star and the glamorous Muslim playboy\, socialite\, womanizer\, racehorse owner and jockey was a source of endless fascination by the press and public. It ended unhappily\, with offers of bribes\, threats of kidnapping and back-and-forth rancor in newspapers all around the globe. \nRita Hayworth returned to film\, but her career evaporated in a haze of alcaholism and strange personality swings. The latter were finally diagnosed as the little known malady called Alzheimer’s Disease. \nIn this multimedia presentation we will celebrate the terrific talent of Rita Hayworth as seen in her classic movies. We will also explore the strange\, unexpected and often sad story of the private life of the glamorous “Love Goddess\,” the remarkable Rita Hayworth

SUMMARY:Wallis Simpson (American Royalty Series)
DESCRIPTION:The King of England abdicated his throne in order to be with “the woman I love.” Some people see it as the most romantic gestures in history. Others see his marriage to a twice divorceed\, promiscuous woman from Baltimore as the symptom of a weak man under the spell of a domineering woman who shared his passion for drinking\, luxury and the high life.  \nWallis Simpson is a complicated woman whose life is shrouded in controversy. As an American who marrieed into the British royal family\, she was an object of both admiration and derision. Certainly her role in leading to a Constitutional crisis in Great Britain is one of the most unique stories in English history! \nIn this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will look at the unusual personal  history of Wallis Simpson before she met the future King Edward. Then we’ll look at the oddly compelling relationship between the lightweight King and the aspirational divorcee from Maryland.  \nThe story will captivate you as we examine how the relationship between Edward and Wallis opened a chain of events that would unexpectedly bring Elizabeth into position to become the future Queen of England. And we will delve deeply into how their support of Hitler caused them to become pariahs and exiles!

SUMMARY:Harding And Coolidge - Republican Presidents Of The 1920s
DESCRIPTION:After  World War I ended\, America turned away from the liberal progressive era of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and made a sharp turn toward conservatism. In 1920\, the Republicans nominated for president Warren G Harding\, an amiable Sen. from Ohio who promised “A return to normalcy.” For eight years the Republicans controlled the presidency\, Congress\, and the national debate. Within twelve  fascinating years the economy had gone from boom to bust and the “Roaring Twenties” had given way to the Great Depression. The seemingly perennial GOP majority evaporated with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Who were the Republican presidents whose pro-business\, low tax\, conservative presidencies led to an explosion and then the demolition of the American economy? They were very dissimilar in their backgrounds\, each with a fascinating back story that you will learn about in this unique multimedia presentation. \n Please Note: Registration is required for this program. Please contact the venue for more information. \n

SUMMARY:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges
DESCRIPTION:In a span of just seven years\, Preston Sturges had an unparalleled run of making some of the greatest American movies of all time.    \nThe films of Preston Sturges are absolutely unique\, unforgettable and utterly brilliant. However\, although his Hollywood career lasted over 35 years\, the movies Preston Sturges wrote and directed between 1938-1945 alone were enough to cement his reputation as one of the most influential directors and respected screenwriters of all time.  After becoming the first screenwriter of the talking movie era to be allowed to direct his own films\,  Preston Sturges created a unique body of work that still delights and challenges and amuses audiences 80 years later. Furthermore\, his personal life was as unexpected\, unique and memorable as his movies! \nYou may be asking yourself: “So who is this guy and why have I never heard of him?” My response is: “Challenge yourself to become enthralled with the filmmaker whose name you may not know but whose movies are unforgettable!”

SUMMARY:Movies About Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln On Film
DESCRIPTION:No American President has been portrayed on film more often than Abraham Lincoln! \nFrom the earliest days of silent movies\, Lincoln has been featured in more movies than all other Presidents combined. The most brilliant of these iconic performances can be seen in John Ford’s groundbreaking “Young Mr. Lincoln” starring Henry Fonda. Raymond Massey played Lincoln so often on stage\, movies\, and TV that George S. Kaufman famously observed: “[Raymond] Massey won’t be satisfied until he’s assassinated!” \nEven in contemporary films such as Spielberg’s “Lincoln\,” the myth of Honest Abe grows and evolves with each movie. In this insightful\, mesmerizing and nostalgic multimedia presentation\, you will see my work as a Lincoln scholar combined with my love of classic cinema! \nPLEASE NOTE: This program is FREE\, but registration is strongly recommended!

SUMMARY:John Ford - Making The Western An Art Form
DESCRIPTION:John Ford’s career as a movie director stretched from the eartly silent era (1917) through the very end of the 1960s! How long a career is that? He directed Will Rogers’ most popular talkie and lived long enough to produce a film about Vietnam War! In between he directed the brilliant comedy “Mister Roberts\,” the best documentary about World War II (“The Battle Of Midway\,” and one of the greatest period dramas ever made. (“The Grapes Of Wrath.”) \nBut that’s not why we most remember John Ford! He is legendary as the director raised the Western to an art form. Returning again and again to familiar themes\, familiar locations and using familiar actors\, most memorably John Wayne\, Ford created the greatest Westerns of all time.Click here to read about my favorite. \n
