SUMMARY:Movies About Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln On Film
DESCRIPTION:No President of the United States has been portrayed in the movies more often than Abraham Lincoln! \nFrom the earliest days of silent movies\, Lincoln has been featured in more movies than all other Presidents combined. The most brilliant of these iconic performances can be seen in John Ford’s groundbreaking “Young Mr. Lincoln” starring Henry Fonda. Raymond Massey played Lincoln so often on stage\, movies\, and TV that George S. Kaufman famously observed: “[Raymond] Massey won’t be satisfied until he’s assassinated!” \nEven in contemporary films such as Spielberg’s “Lincoln\,” the myth of Honest Abe grows and evolves with each movie. In this insightful\, mesmerizing and nostalgic multimedia presentation\, you will see my work as a Lincoln scholar combined with my love of classic cinema! \nPLEASE NOTE – THIS CLASS IS OFFERED THROUGH CLC – ALL REGISTRATION GOES THROUGH THEM!

SUMMARY:TV By The Decades: Television in the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:TV in the 1960s \nThe 1960s were definitely one of TV’s oddest decades! The 1960s began with Westerns dominating the ratings! The old West soap opera Bonanza became the most popular show on the air. One after another competing show was vanquished by the old time sensibilities of an old-fashioned Western. All you need to know about the diverse nature of TV in the 1960s is found in the answer to the question: “What show finally was able to compete with Bonanza in the ratings?” The answer was a liberal\, modern and very controversial challenger: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. This bastion of hip\, cutting edge liberal comedy gave young viewers quite a stark alternative to the Ponderosa! \nSo the 1960s were the era of Gunsmoke and Wagon Train\, Gilligan’s Island and The Beverly Hillbillies and Laugh-In and The Smothers Brothers! We will talk about how TV grew and changed as viewers who had enjoyed Combat began tuning in to Hogan’s Heroes. You won’t want to miss this fast paced multimedia presentation! \nIN THE COMMENTS BELOW – LIST YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW OF THE 1960s!

SUMMARY:America's Purpose Statement: The Declaration Of Independence
DESCRIPTION:The most important sentence ever written by an American – a sentence which has inspired people in every part of the world – is found in America’s purpose statement!  Click here to read more. The legacy of Washington\, Hancock\, Franklin\, Jefferson\, Adams\, Hamilton and Paul Revere challenges us even today \n \nOn a stifling July Thursday in 1776\, our Founding Fathers agreed to a document that was completely unique in the history of the world.  There had been many revolutions over the centuries\, but never had one begun with a philosophical purpose statement. \nAlthough the Declaration of Independence has no legal power\, the Declaration has become the guiding beacon for what America was striving to become. As the events of 2020 showed\, we as a a nation we are a world leader in human rights and\, yet\, America is still a work in progress. \n \nWhy study the Declaration of Independence? Because it is the ultimate statement of what we hope to become. It has been quoted by freedom movements in the USA and around the world. Yet many Americans know surprisingly little about it. In this exciting and thought provoking multimedia presentation I will present the thrilling themes\, difficult negotiations\, the contradictory\, complex and charismatic personalities and exciting events that led to the most important moment in American history. \nCOST: Suggested donation is $5.00.Please mark “Declaration” in the subject line. \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O. SUMMARY:Our First First Ladies
DESCRIPTION:The Founding Father never gave a moment’s thought to the role of the President wife. In fact\, the term “First Lay” itself would be unknown for fifty years! \nNonetheless\, the first women to hold the title of “First Lady”  were in amazing group of strong and dedicated women! Martha Washington\, Abigail Adams and Dolley Madison\, in particular\, were vastly influential in ways the country did not yet recognize. They were very different one from another and each added something unique and wonderful to the national experience. Beginning with Martha Washington we will trace the early years of the first ladies.

SUMMARY:First Ladies - 1860 - 1945
DESCRIPTION:First Ladies – 1860 – 1945\nWhen Martha Washington became our first First Lady\, she stepped into a roll with no job description and no precedent. She handled the position with grace and polish. however\, each of the extraordinary women who served as First Lady brought something unique and different to the role. \nFirst Ladies – 1860 – 1945\nFrances Cleveland \nThis second installment in our series on the history of the First Ladies looks at the changing roles taken on by the wives of the presidents from 1860 – 1945. We end with Eleanor Roosevelt and begin with Mary Lincoln. This is certainly a distinctive mix of personalities and aspirations! We will look at the “traditional” First Ladies who took on the role of wife and mother and shunned the spotlight. This group includes Caroline Harrison\,  Ida McKinley\, and Julia Grant. Frances Cleveland carved out a very different niche for herself\, raising a young family while bringing glamour back to the White House. Several of the  First Ladies in this group were transformative figures. Nellie Taft\, Edith Wilson and Eleanor Roosevelt were tremendously influential in their husband’s administrations. Lucy Hayes brought a new level of education to the position. \nUsing numerous film clips\, intriguing insights\,  thought provoking comparisons\, and fascinating anecdotes\, I will open your eyes to the very different personalities and accomplishments of the First Ladies of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nPlease note: CLC registration is required. Please call the office for help/info!

Join me for a fast\, funny and fascinating look at one of America’s classic comic treasures\, Mr. Carl Reiner \nCarl Reiner first exploded into American consciousness as the straight man on the immortal Sid Caesar’s great TV shows. \nWorking alongside writing legends including Mel Brooks\, Woody Allen\, Neil Simon\, Selma Diamond and Larry Gelbart\, Carl Reiner became one of the volatile Caesar’s favorite co-stars and most trusted writers. \nTheir classic “Professor” sketches are still hilarious sixty-five years after they first aired. And his lifelong friendship and collaboration with Mel Brooks began as a result! \nAfter the Sid Caesar shows ended\, Carl Reiner created The DIck Van Dyke Show. This program would prove to be one of the most influential\, funniest and most transformative situation comedies of all time.  \nAfter Reiner and Van Dyke ended the show at the height of its popularity\, the brilliant writer/producer/director began working in feature films.  \nCarl Reiner created the cult classics “Where’s Poppa” and “Oh\, God” before embarking on a brilliant partnership with Steve Martin. The Reiner/Martin films include some of the best comedies of Steve Martin’s career\, including “The Jerk\,” “Alll Of Me\,” and “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid.” \nWe’ll enjoy clips and stories from all of this – and\, of course – the brilliant “2\,000 Year Old Man” routines with Mel Brooks. Don’t miss this great presentation! \nTHIS PRESENTATION IS FREE\, THANKS TO THE GREAT PEOPLE AT McHENRY COUNTY COLLEGE. HOWEVER\, YOU MUST REGISTER! \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nIMPORTANT NOTE – I am NOT involved with the registration process in any way. I cannot get you a link or send you a reminder. Direct ALL questions to the hosts!!!!  Thanks!

SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans simply do not know very much about the Revolutionary War.   \nAlthough certain images from the Revolutionary War are seared into our memory – Washington Crossing the Delaware  and the signing of the Declaration of Independence –  many people would be hard-pressed to name a major battle\, a leading general or even how the War For Independence ended.  Recent events in America have caused some to question whether we should even have statues of George Washington on public display. \nTHE REVOLUTIONARY WAR\n In this four-part series on the Revolutionary War we will examine why the freest and most prosperous colonials in the world decided to declare independence from a mother country that had protected them. We will look at the roots of the war\, the Declaration of Independence\, the early battles including Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill before transitioning into a longer look at the seven years of fighting necessary for America to begin its experiment in participatory democracy. We will also look at the amazing and diverse leaders who guided America. Benjamin Franklin\,James Monroe\, John Adams\, Paul Revere\, George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, and Alexander Hamilton will be some of the people whom we will meet. SUMMARY:First Ladies of the 20th and 21st Centuries
DESCRIPTION:First Ladies of the 20th and 21st Centuries\nWhen Martha Washington became our first First Lady\, she stepped into a roll with no job description and no precedent. She handled the position with grace and polish. however\, each of the extraordinary women who served as First Lady brought something unique and different to the role. \nFirst Ladies of the 20th and 21st Centuries\n \nThis installment in our series on the history of the First Ladies looks at the changing roles taken on by the wives of the presidents from 1932 – 2012. We begin with Eleanor Roosevelt and conclude with Michelle Obama. This is certainly a distinctive mix of personalities and aspirations! We will look at the “traditional” First Ladies who took on the role of wife and mother and shunned the spotlight. This group includes Bess Truman\,  Mamie Eisenhower\, and Barbara Bush. Jacqueline Kennedy carved out a very different niche for herself\, raising a young family while bringing glamour back to the White House. Several of the  First Ladies in this group were transformative figures. Lady Bird Johnson\, Nancy Reagan and Rosalyn Carter were tremendously influential in their husband’s administrations. Betty Ford brought a new candor to the position. And our most recent First Ladies – Hillary Clinton\, Laura Bush\, and Michelle Obama raised the bar in terms of education and professional accomplishment before serving as First Lady. \nUsing numerous film clips\, intriguing insights\,  thought provoking comparisons\, and fascinating anecdotes\, I will open your eyes to the very different personalities and accomplishments of the First Ladies of the 20th and 21st centuries.

SUMMARY:Politics 2020 - Your Questions Answered And The State Of The Race Overflow
DESCRIPTION:Now that the race has come down to President Trump vs. VP Joe Biden\, the time has come to make some predictions\, examine the polls\, look at historical trends and make some educated guesses about the last three months of the election. \nWe will also be examining the absolutely crucial race for control of the Senate! Can Democrats retake the Senate or will it continue to serve as a GOP firewall. If President Trump is re-elected\, the GOP can afford to lose three seats and still hold the Senate.(Democrats would need to pick up a net of 4 seats if President Trump is re-elected! If VP Biden wins\, the Democrats need to pick up a net of three seats to gain control. Right now the polls could not look much closer and almost every contested Senate race is going to go right down to the wire!  \nYou may submit any questions in advance or we will answer live! Leave questions below. \nTHIS IS A CLC CLASS AND ALL REGISTRATION IS DONE THROUGH CLC!  HERE IS THE LINK: \nhttps://www.clcillinois.edu/coursecatalog?subject=CDIS&course=27&term=1202

SUMMARY:Movies About Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln On Film
DESCRIPTION:No President of the United States has been portrayed in the movies more often than Abraham Lincoln! \nLincoln has been featured in more movies since the earliest days of silent movies than all other Presidents combined. The most brilliant of these iconic performances can be seen in John Ford’s groundbreaking “Young Mr. Lincoln\,” starring Henry Fonda. Raymond Massey played Lincoln so often on stage\, in movies\, and on TV that George S. Kaufman famously observed: “[Raymond] Massey won’t be satisfied until he’s assassinated!” \nEven in contemporary films such as Spielberg’s “Lincoln\,” the myth of Honest Abe grows and evolves with each movie. In this insightful\, mesmerizing\, and nostalgic multimedia presentation\, you will see my work as a Lincoln scholar combined with my love of classic cinema! \n
