SUMMARY:Best Actors Never to Win an Oscar
DESCRIPTION:America has been in love with the movies for over 100 years. And every year the race for the Oscar is closely watched by movie fans around the world. Winning the Academy award connotes something special in the history of film. Movie buffs debate the winners and losers\, the snubs\, and the surprises.  But since the 1920s\, the Academy Awards have built a long historical record that we can examine. And that record definitely contains some extremely surprising omissions.   In this fun and fast multimedia presentation\, we will look at which highly-regarded actors have never won a competitive Academy Award \n \nWe will not be considering one specific film performance but\, rather\, the larger question of why a great body of work never yielded an Oscar. For instance\, how did great actors from Hollywood’s golden past such as Peter O’Toole\, Cary Grant\, & Richard Burton never win an Academy Award? And how has the precious Oscar statuette eluded actors working today such as  Leonardo DiCaprio\, Johnny Depp\,\n and Harrison Ford who have made some of the most highly acclaimed films ever? Don’t miss this fun presentation!

Some of the names on the list are sure to surprise you! \nAlthough some of the amazing women we will feature eventually did win honorary Oscars or lifetime achievement awards\, it is nonetheless incomprehensible that some of Hollywood’s most important and accomplished actresses\, including many that appeared in numerous acclaimed films\, never won an acting Oscar.   \nOne important example would be Chicago’s own\, the amazing Kim Novak. In a ten-year period\, she made six films that are today considered cinema classics.  Despite that amazing run\, Kim Novak was never even nominated for an Oscar! \nOur top twenty list of snubbed actresses will definitely surprise you!  Each choice is accompanied by insightful analysis\, many film clips\, and numerous wonderful anecdotes.

SUMMARY:The Chicago Cubs - 1945 - 2016
DESCRIPTION:In the first half of the 20th century\, the Chicago Cubs were one of the mightiest teams in all of baseball – a perennial pennant contender despite not winning the World Series since 1908. \nThe second half of baseball’s 20th century entrenched an indelible phrase in America’s national consciousness:  The Chicago Cubs were “lovable losers.” Despite having some absolutely great players – Ernie Banks\, Ron Santo\, Billy Williams\, Fergie Jenkins\, Greg Maddux\, Mark Grace\, Ryne Sandberg\, Kerry Wood\, Carlos Zambrano\, and Sammy Sosa – the Cubs rarely reached the postseason. More commonly\, they mostly endured one long losing season after another long losing season.  Empty bleachers\, a crumbling  Wrigley Field\, cheap ownership\, and terrible trades became the lasting hallmarks of the once-mighty Chicago Cubs. Even when the Cubs would field occasionally field a strong\, competitive team and begin to make a promising postseason run\, something always seemed to go wrong. The Cubs were still “lovable losers.” \nIn 1969\, a black cat running in front of Ron Santo seemed to symbolize the utter futility of the Cubs. A normally sure-handed first baseman let a ball go by him and the postseason was lost. A hapless fan wearing headphones reached for a foul ball and our World Series hopes were dashed. On and on it went. And then came 2015!  The arrival of some of the most talented prospects in baseball history created a team that was fun\, exciting\, and competitive. In 2016\, the Cubs finally won the World Series! \nThe long\, slow\, march of the Cubs – from the cheapness and racism of the Wrigley years to the boredom and inactivity of the years of ownership by the Chicago Tribune and by Sam Zell has given way to a unique feeling of hopefulness on the part of Cub fans.  A robust ownership team brought in the financial resources and personnel necessary to begin turning the Cubs into a perennial contender once again. In this multimedia presentation\, filled with fabulous film clips\, amazing anecdotes\, and nostalgic photos\, we will trace the confounding  Chicago Cubs from 1945 to 2016. \n  \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:The History Of NBC
DESCRIPTION:The history of NBC is perhaps the most storied and essential in broadcasting history. Its founder\, the illustrious David Sarnoff\, was the genius who turned a small local radio station into a gigantic\, influential multimedia empire\, always had dreams of greatness\, and his tremendous vision brought his network along with him. His contributions to American popular culture cannot be overstated! \nAlthough CBS had the early advantage in news broadcasting\, NBC (an offshoot of RCA) eventually caught up with Huntley and Brinkley. It took a while for NBC to compete with CBS in radio\, but stars like Bob Hope made it possible. The history of NBC in the television years is especially intriguing. The National Broadcasting CompanyThe National Broadcasting Company probably debuted color TV and eventually became a perennial rating champion. \n \nAlong the way\, NBC pioneered morning TV with ” The Today Show\,” and late-night became and NBC’s staple with “The Tonight Show” with multitalented host Steve Allen and later the iconic Johnny Carson. And at a time when no one thought that late-night weekend programming would work\, NBC revolutionized television with ”Saturday Night Live.” \nIn a more modern era\, NBC invented “Must See TV” with a powerhouse lineup that included Fiends\, Seinfeld\, ER\, Cheers and Nite Court. This kaleidoscopic multimedia presentation will have wonderful memories and great surprises around every corner! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Betty White: America's Favorite Potty Mouthed Grandma
DESCRIPTION:The fabulous Betty White has been called an American national treasure – and rightly so! 99 years old and still witty\, working\, and happy\, Betty white it’s a beacon of positivity even in difficult years! Witty\, working\, and happy\, Betty white it’s a beacon of positivity even in difficult times! \nYear in and year out\, Betty White has been voted one of America’s most beloved entertainers.  In 2018\, she was chosen as the most trusted person in America! You know her as the seemingly sweet we but secretly scheming sexpot Sue Anne Nivens on the iconic  “Mary Tyler Moore Show\,” the naïve and trusting Rose Nyland on the classic  “Golden Girls\,” and the outrageous and somewhat loopy Elka Ostrovsky on ” Hot in Cleveland.” Betty White has been a staple on talk shows\, a host and panelist on game shows\, and has even performed in some popular movies\, including one classic film drama about politics in which she played a U.S. Senator! \nYou may not know that Betty White was a pioneer in the early days of television\, being the first woman to produce her own show!  The amazing Ms. White is a best-selling author and tireless advocate for animals. Most importantly\, she is widely considered one of the nicest people in all show business. This warm\, charming and funny presentation is loaded with hilarious video clips and great stories about the one and only Betty White. \nNOTE: This Zoom presentation is FREE!  The Arlington Heights Senior Center has no online registration. SUMMARY:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges
DESCRIPTION:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges\nYou may be asking yourself: “So who is this guy\, and why have I never heard of him?” My response is: “Challenge yourself to become enthralled with the filmmaker whose name you may not know but whose movies are unforgettable!” \nThat is exactly the challenge I gave to screenwriter Jarett Miller. Jarett\, 26\, is a frequent guest when I speak about movies. In addition to being a screenwriter who has worked on major projects like “Wonder Woman\,” “It\,” and “The Umbrella Academy\,” among others\, Jarett has an advanced degree in film and a passion for great storytelling. For this unique two-part series\, I challenged Jarett to watch some of the great Preston Sturges movies. Our course description matches what I told him! I do hope you will sign up! \nIn a span of just seven years\, Preston Sturges had an unparalleled run of making some of the greatest American movies of all time.    \nThe films of Preston Sturges are absolutely unique\, unforgettable\, and utterly brilliant. However\, although his Hollywood career lasted over 35 years\, the movies Preston Sturges wrote and directed between 1938-1945 alone were enough to cement his reputation as one of the most influential directors and respected screenwriters of all time.  After becoming the first screenwriter of the talking movie era to direct his own films\,  Preston Sturges created a unique body of work that still delights and challenges and amuses audiences 80 years later. Furthermore\, his personal life was as unexpected\, unique\, and memorable as his movies! \nJoin Jarett and me as we explore the movies written and directed by one of the great filmmakers: Preston Sturges! We will explore his films in chronological order. Join us for both parts of this great two-week program. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Meghan Markle And Wallis Simpson - American Royalty
DESCRIPTION:Wallis Simpson and Prince Edward’s scandalous relationship led to a Royal abdication and quite nearly brought down the British Monarchy. The engagement of American actress\, model\, and philanthropist Meghan Markle to Prince Harry of Great Britain caused many people in America and England to ask the same question: “Who is Meghan Markle?” \nThe interest was so intense that in December 2018\, Google declared that “Meghan Markle” was the most searched name in the entire year! \nThe short answer is that Meghan Markle is a deeply compassionate and quite brilliant graduate of Northwestern University (with degrees in International Relations and Theater! The biracial American divorcee was a star on a popular cable TV show called “Suits” after a stint as a sexy  ‘briefcase girl’ on “Deal Or No Deal.”  But look deeper\, and you find that the remarkable Meghan Markle also ran a very influential motivational website with millions of followers and actively\, passionately served in numerous charitable enterprises. So while she is not as famous as Rita Hayworth or Grace Kelly\, Meghan Markle is a wonderful person and already very popular in England! \nWallis Simpson was the twice-divorced\, promiscuous\, social-climbing American who bewitched the weak-willed\, promiscuous future King of England. She was still married when she began her affair with the fitter King – and was actively cheating on him with another married man! Although Hitler said Wallis would make “A great Queen\,” the Royal Family and the British people thought differently. After King Edward’s abdication\, they were effectively banished from Britain! \nThis fascinating multimedia presentation will look at these two very different and very controversial women! \n

SUMMARY:The History Of ABC
DESCRIPTION:The youngest of the big three broadcasting networks\, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC)\, began as an offshoot of NBC and was for decades mired in third place in the ratings. That began to change when Walt Disney stepped in. Disney helped popularize color broadcasting and led to the development of a new identity for ABC. Nonetheless\, it was not until the 1970s\, with the introduction of young-skewing\, sitcoms that it was entirely clear that ABC would survive!\n \nEventually developing a more youth-oriented schedule\, ABC carved out a special and popular identity of its own. While today the network is primarily known for its endless parade of ‘reality’ shows (“The Bachelor\, “Extreme Makeover\,” “Dancing With The Stars”) and recycled game shows (“The Match Game\,” “Supermarket Sweep\,” Card Sharks)\, ABC is also the network that brought innovations like “Whose Line Is It Anyway\,” Monday Night Football\,” “Roots” and “The Fugitive\,” as well as 20/20 and Barbara Walters’\, mesmerizing interviews.\n \n\nJoin us for this fun and fascinating multimedia look at a giant of American Broadcasting!

SUMMARY:The Great Filmmakers: Preston Sturges (Part II)

SUMMARY:The Life Of Harriet Tubman
DESCRIPTION:The life of Harriet Tubman is one of the most extraordinary tales of heroism\, sacrifice\, and courage you will ever hear. Many Americans know the name of Harriet Tubman as a conductor on the underground railroad. They remember that she led many enslaved people to freedom. But like Rosa Parks or Paul Revere\, she’s remembered more as a symbolic figure than as a real-life person whose life was dramatic before and after her daring rescues behind enemy lines. \nIn this fast moving and fascinating multimedia presentation\, you will meet the woman behind the legend. The life of Harriet Tubman includes being a spy\, a nurse\, an advocate for women’s suffrage\, and the distinction of being the first American woman ever to lead regular army troops into combat! I love this presentation and I think you will as well!

SUMMARY:Irving Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Irving Berlin has often been called the most quintessentially American songwriter of all time. This is high praise for anyone – especially for an uneducated young immigrant from Russia who came to America not speaking a word of English. \nAs with so many immigrants\, Irving Berlin came to love this country with a deep and abiding passion. He never lost his sense of gratitude to the USA!  But Irving Berlin’s music is much more important  than just the unforgettable anthem “God Bless America.”  \nOver the course of a 60-year career\, Irving Berlin wrote more than 1500 songs. While many are forgotten\, his best work stands among the best work ever written for the movies and the Broadway stage.   \nWhen Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were dancing “Cheek to Cheek\,”  they were dancing to Irving Berlin’s music. When soldiers lamented “Oh\, How I Hate to Get up in the Morning\,” they were singing Irving Berlin. On Christian holidays\, people saying “White Christmas” or  “Easter Parade.”  I wonder how many of those people remembered that the songs were written by a Jewish man who celebrated neither Easter nor Christmas! \nThe very long life and sixty-year career of the great Irving Berlin\, from “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” to  “Annie Get Your Gun” is one of the most fascinating stories of American popular culture history. I can’t wait to share with you in this wonderful multimedia presentation.
